This program is for sending Short Messages to mobile phones these of 160 Characters. The original SMSMaster program was only for the PeeCee and is now going through a complete rewrite to take full advantage of the Windoze 95 32bit architecture. After numerous emails asking for a port of the PeeCee version @{" I " link "Author"} decided to write my new version for the Amiga. To send a message, you need to know the message, the mobile phone number to send the message to, and the Network Operator of that mobile phone. Ideally, you should not need to know the Network Operator, but the UK operators currently do not allow SMS messages to be passed between UK networks. This has the unfortunate effect that, for example, a Cellnet subscriber cannot send an SMS message to a Vodafone subscriber, without resorting to using an SMSC other than that provided by Cellnet. Whilst the Network Operators continue to fail to provide full connectivity, you will need to know which network a phone is connected to, to ensure successful routing of the message. To make life easier, SMSMaster includes a database of UK phone numbers and Network Operators, to automatically route the SMS message to the correct network. P.S.: Feel free to mail @{" me " link "Author"} your opinions, bug reports, suggestions or greetings - I would appreciate some feel for whether to continue developing for the Amiga :-) @endnode @node SMS SMS (Short Message Service) is part of the GSM and PCN standards which allow up to 160 characters of text to be sent or received by a mobile terminal (cellphone). This is similar to using the phone as a text pager. Some examples of when SMS may be useful :- - when the phone is not within a service area (the network will send the message when the phone comes back within the service area). - when the phone is not turned on, and voice mail is disabled (SMS is always enabled, as long as it is supported by the Network Operator). - for sending detailed information to the phone user (addresses, specifications etc.) without the user needing to write them down. - to send the same message to a large group of people (e.g. new prices to sales staff, notification of a meeting date). - to send an unobtrusive message when a phone call would not be acceptable (e.g. to someone in a meeting). Not all digital phones are capable of transmitting SMS messages, but most current digital phones can receive them (as long as the Network Operator has the facility enabled). Note that with some Operators Network, users may have to be connected to a certain tariff to have the send facility enabled, but they may still receive messages. Whilst roaming in another country using GSM, the SMS message may still be delivered if the network that you are roaming on has the facility enabled for roaming users. When a message is received by the phone, it will be stored in the SIM, and will be available to be read whenever needed. It will be saved until you delete it, allowing use as a simple notepad. Usually you can store at least ten messages in the SIM. Some phones will allow you to store more messages in the phone's own memory. Most phones can be configured to beep when a message is received, or just light up an indicator on the display if beeping would be unacceptable. Given that not all phones can send the messages, and that it is not easy to type a message into those phones that can, this technology can best be exploited using a computer and a modem. The computer can maintain a set of standard messages together with a phone book, and provide an easy and intuitive user interface. The messages are uploaded via a modem to the SMSC of the Network Operator of the phone you want to page. The only charge for this is the call to the SMSC, which is usually charged as per a call to a mobile on that network. The person receiving the message does not have to pay anything, unlike the standard voice mailboxes provided by the networks. (Note that there may be a receiving charge on non-UK based networks. This may affect roaming users please check with your Service Provider to avoid incurring unexpected costs). @endnode @node Requirements REQUIREMENTS An Amiga with system V 2.0 or higher, a mobile phone (if you want to recieve messages yourself), A modem. Note this version of SMSMaster will only work within the UK to UK operators i.e it will not work in Europe or any other country. It has not been possible to add in foreign hosts at this time. @endnode @node Files SMSMaster.lha -> this contains SMSMaster -> the binary SMSMaster.guide -> this manual @endnode @node Installation HOW TO INSTALL THE PROGRAM Simply use lha (available on Aminet) and extract to any area on your hard drive. @endnode @node HowToStart HOW TO START Simply double click on the SMSMaster Icon. If your version is unregistered you will be confronted with numerous requesters reminding you to register. Now once the program has started you have a number of options. In the menus you will find save config and load config. These will save your own prefs. You will also find a phonebook. Here you can enter all your favourite numbers and save them out. This is done automatically. You can also enter the address of a person if you so wish. To send a message either click on multi send if you want to send the same message to more than one person or enter in the phonenumber you want to send to. Now enter your message (120 chars max on unregistered version) and click on Send. Your message will now be sent automatically to the provider. If you have clicked on multi send then you will be sent to the phone book. Here you can add new users or select from your previous users saved list. To add a person to the send to list make sure their name appears in the details fields. Click on the ADD button and their details will appear on the sending to window. When you have finished click on OK and your message will be sent to all the people in your list. If you want to read this document at anytime then select HELP from the INFO menu item. @endnode @node new ENHANCEMENTS FOR THIS VERSION - The interface is now font sensitive, i.e. it uses the font that you use on WB. Most fontsizes are acceptable but certain large fonts may cause gadgets to wander on the interface. - Removed a bug in the phone book which caused the program to exit under certain conditions. - Speed up on the connect and disconnect screens mean that the whole transfer should be quicker. The only limitation now is the actual speed that the provider is running at. - Removed a small bug that caused an unable to allocate/free memory error requester that occurred with certain accelerators. - Abort button now works better. @endnode @node Bugs KNOWN BUGS AND PROBLEMS - Messages are not grouped to providers before doing a multi send this will be sorted very soon. - Certain features when using SMSMaster under UAE can appear broken, the same is probably true of the Amiga forever package from Cloanto. - Certain accelerators cause problems during the initialisation of the program. SMSMaster is NOT free or Public Domain. It is provided under the concept of Shareware. You may evaluate SMSMaster for a period not exceeding 30 days. If you decide to continue using it, you are both morally and legally obliged to pay the registration fee. If you decide not to continue using SMSMaster, you must delete it from your computer. Registered users benefit from being able to define their own signature, and not having the '-Sent by unregistered SMSMaster' text added to every message they send. This allows you to use the full 160 character limit of the SMS specification. Unregistered users are limited to around 120 characters. Upon registering, you will be sent a Keyfile, which will upgrade the Shareware versions of this program to full functionality. You will be able to obtain the current Shareware version from anywhere (including the support @{" Website " link Author}), and upgrade it to the full registered version using your personalised Keyfile. @endnode @node Registration The registration fee is not expensive. If the program is worth using, it is worth registering! @{" WHY " link whyregister} should you register the program well for starters it is shareware, which is a nice way of getting cheap good quality software. Registration gives you a license file that will upgrade the shareware version of SMSMaster to the registered version. The license file will work for all minor updates and bugfix releases of the software (e.g. V1.0 to V1.1). Major updates may require a further registration fee, which will be significantly reduced for registered users (updates will only be charged for if there is a significant increase in functionality). The license file you will receive is personalised, uniquely identifying it as yours. It allows you to legally run SMSMaster on one Amiga. You must not redistribute the license file. There are two classes of registration, Media and Email. Both classes include a license file. Media registration means that upon receipt of your payment, a 3.5' double density disk will be posted to you, including the latest version of SMSMaster and your license file. You may still download future versions of SMSMaster from the support @{" Website " link Author}, or you may pay a small fee (as detailed below) to receive a future upgrade on floppy disk. Email registration is available if you have an Email account, and is faster and cheaper than Media registration due to my reduced costs (I do not have to pay for a disk, post & packing, or go to the post office) You post payment in the same way as for Media registration, and when the funds have cleared, you will receive an Email with the license file Mime or UUEncoded (your option).
