But with this program it shouldn't make a difference, because I think even an adult could make it work with VERY little effort :-). So what is TritonWho you ask, quite a while back, when I started my BBS (shameless plug, PABBS - +64 3 338 5185) I had a little program I found on Aminet open on the Workbench and tell me basically who was online, if anybody. I found this invaluable for seeing who was playing around on the BBS when I turned on the monitor or saw the modem lights turn on, this was called GooeyWho, and I thought it was one of the best little aids around. Unfortunatly, when I upgraded to DLG 1.1 it decided not to work very well at all. I lived without it for a wee while, but I just had to get something like it again. So was born TritonWho, my first decent program in any language apart from Cando (in which I have written a couple of things which I probably will never release), and definatly my first GUI project in any language apart from Cando. It is called TritonWho because it uses the Triton GUI system (library included), and while it does not yet have one of the features of the old GooeyWho I believe that it is ready to be released as version 1.0. Because it uses the Triton Library once you get the preferences editor (get the whole Triton user archive from Aminet) you can edit many parts of the GUI, including having it placed on a public screen (new or existing). Why Triton : Two reasons, his is my first GUI project and when I looked at developing it in MUI I was just lost in the functions, plus MUI is very slow and rather memory hungry at the best of times. So I spent a couple of weeks looking at other GUI systems, and then found Triton. Triton really stood out from the rest in terms of simplicity to program in, and it has most the functionality of MUI while being fast and not memory hungry at all. It is very simple to install, all is needed is to copy 1 single library, although in the Triton drawer of this archive is an installer script to help you out with that everso difficult task :-) I intend to use Triton for all my future projects, and of course updates to TritonWho. Installation : Easy as pie. Just run the install script, it only copies the Triton Library and Config.library to Libs: and TritionWho and it's icon to WB-Startup. Use : When you first start it up, you will be presented with an empty list, and 5 buttons. The first thing you will need to do is configure the program. Click the 'Configuration' button (or press 'C') and another window will open. Once again there will be an empty list at the top, then 2 buttons, a string entry gadget, a cycle gadget and 2 string entry gadgets. The list shows which nodes you have designated to be displayed, there is no limit to the number of nodes that can be displayed (except your memory of course). To add a node to the list, type in the name of the node (eg 'TL0') into the 'This node' string gadget and click Insert. If you want it inserted in a certain place in the list, simply select the entry BEFORE where you want it inserted and the click Insert. Remove is pretty self explanitory, select the node you want removed from the display and click Remove. As you, as a DLG sysop probably know it is possible to 'SNOOP' (open a display of) on a node in either a screen or a window on workbench (how I wish I could open a snoop window on any public screen). The cycle gadget determines when you click 'Snoop' wether a snoop screen or window should open. Finnaly, the 'Chat command' string gadget. In here put the command used to invoke your 'chat' system, I personnaly use powerchat. The command can have 1 (at the moment) special keyword, '%PORT' and this is replaced by the port selected when you press Chat. For example, I have 'Doors:Powerchat/Powerchat %PORT' in that section. There is one other string gadget, but it is not yet used so I won't explain it yet. Once you have set all th options, select 'Save' from the 'Project' menu and then close the configuration window. Now the main window should show in the list all the nodes you 'Insert'ed on the configuration screen, the user on each of them and what that user is doing. From now on I think the functions are self-explanitory, Snoop and Unsnoop open and close a screen/window on the selected port respectivly. Local starts a local login via your LOCAL script (usually s:local), and Chat starts a chat with the selected port. GUI : Both windows should remember thier dimensions fine, just set them to where you want and click snapshot from the Triton prefs Windows section. To make it appear on a public screen, select the 'System' button from the Triton prefs, add and select the Public screen name, click Use, close the 'System' window, click Save and re-load TritonWho to have it appear on the new screen !. For more information about using the triton Prefs program please refer to the actual Triton user docs in the Triton user package from Aminet. Shareware : This program is shareware, however. Because I know that Sysops don't have money (or at least this sysop doesn't) I have not yet crippled it in any way shape or form. BUT if you have written ANY SOFTWARE for the Amiga and you use this program of mine the I ask you to send me a registered (if it was shareware) version of 1 piece of your software (preferably DLG based). For this, when I update TritonWho, and do add some nag/cripple to the program you will recieve a fully registered version, and of course you will get ALL UPDATES to the program in the future. If you havn't written anything, please send me some email anyway to tell me what you think and any improvements/additions that should be made. Anybody that does this will probably be eligable for a reduced registration if/when I put a cripple/nag on the software. Distribution: The source is mine, don't disassemble, mutilate or otherwise change this program. Other than that, give it to all DLG sysops you know and get them to use it, not that they would even considor being without it once they ave had a taste. Warranty : None. It works fine on my system here, and I have been running various beta versions for several months now. If it does anything wierd, like cause a crash, lose memory, lockup the BBS, then let me know ASAP with a full description of your system so as I can work out where de buglet lies and eradicate him :-) Credits : Commodore, for thier wonderful AMIGA.
