BBS by Jan-Kees Geijteman ^ Reboot 1. What is telnet ? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With telnet, a user with a telnet program can logon to your BBS while he/she's on Internet! The connect isn't as fast as a "normal" logon, but it's just nice to see people visiting your BBS, when they are on the net :) And another nice thing, the people can logon for local costs ! (So people from other countries can logon for local costs!) BTW : You MUST be online on Internet, so if a user is in your BBS, don't drop the carrier :) 2. Requirements... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ok, here goes :)) - Amiga :) - Kickstart 2.04+ - 68020+ CPU (the telnetd.device is 020+) but try to use it in 000 mode! - Excelsior! BBS v1.20+ - Miami from Holger Kruse - Internet account (If you don't have this, then get one!) - PPP/SLIP connect - telnetd.device © by Christopher A. Wichura - IRC program - AmTELNET (To check if it works) 3. Installing the stuff :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is ONLY for Miami !! AmiTCP needs some more programs, check Aminet for telnetd in comm/tcp, I hope it's there somewhere :)) - First copy telnetd.device to DEVS: - Assign "AmiTCP:" where you have the Miami files. - Add a directory in AMITCP: called "bd" (makedir amitcp:bd) - Copy TELNETD-DEVICE.CONF to Amitcp:bd - Start Miami, and go to DATABASE/SERVICES - Look for the text "telnet 23 tcp" I use Miami v2.0 so it's a bit different from v1.0 :)) So "telnet" is the name :) "23" is the ID "tcp" is the protocol - Save the Miami settings, quit Miami (if you want), and fire up Excelsior! BBS *PREFS* - In the MODEM menu, add a new node. - Min Baud = 0 - Max Baud = 19200 (19200 is the maximum for telnet) - Go to "Strings" in the modem menu - Now view the pics in the archive called XPREFS.IFF and XPREFS2.IFF And use the same strings ! Also the Initialize string !! - Save the settings - Exit the prefs program - Reboot your Amiga - Turn on your modem (if you haven't) :) - Start Miami, start your IRC program and call your Internet provider! - Once online, join a IRC server and channel. like #amiga for example. - Start your BBS if the E! Master is ready, but the hd is still loading, then it's ok, because it's loading the telnetd.device at that moment. - In your IRC program, type "/whois " or if you use AmIRC, double click on your OWN nick. - Now you can see your host name. e.g. "mas01-32.dial.xs4all.nl" (That's one of my hostnames). What you see is @ so your hostname is WITHOUT the "@" ! Write your hostname on a paper, or remember it :) - Fire up AmTELNET, and connect to your hostname and as port, use 23 !! If everything is alright, you have logged on ! - If it works, close the connection in AmTELNET, quit AmTELNET, and tell people your telnet node is free or open :) Tell the people your hostname, and just see what happens :) Don't forget to tell them to use port 23 ;) Another thing to check if it works WITHOUT using your modem, fire up Miami,E! and AmTELNET, as server in AmTELNET use "localhost" as port, use 23 ! (See the pics in this archive!) One thing before you open your telnet node, you MUST have logged on by yourself every time you open your telnet node ! Or people will get a lousy cps and lots of errors ! :( So log on every time you start E! BBS when you are on the net :) If you want to add a 2nd telnet node (which is possible!) change the unit (in E! PREFS/MODEM/STRINGS) to unit number 1 ! But I think one user is enough ehehe ;) Have fun with the telnet node ! 4. Troubleshooting... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - If you can't connect correctly to your telnet node, change the port to 9990 (also in TELNET-DEVICE.CONF in Amitcp:bd/ change 23 to 9990) Maybe you should change it in Miami too! (Database/Services, ID should be 9990) - All my users are getting errors when they are downloading files! Read the installation part again ! 5. Thanks to... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * Christopher A. Wichura for telnetd.device * Holger Kruse for Miami * Amicom for Excelsior! * Mathias Mischler for AmTELNET * GATEWAY 2000 for saving the Amiga ! * "Tyrell" for some telnet info ! 6.
