1. Introduction
   ------------

I'll bet, like most who have learned to use the InterNet, you too love the
InterNet. Although it has many advantages, it also has its drawbacks. One of
these disadvantages is the fact that sometimes the meaning of a sentence is not
quite clear, for example: 'You again...' may be implied in a derogatory or
ironic way. This is generally where the so-called "smiley" gets used. However,
depending on the font you use, smileys sometimes look very ugly. :( Sometimes
the ':' is too high or the ')' is too low, or the proportions may even be
wrong. Now, however, there are the 'SmileFonts'! This font is based upon the
well known Helvetica font, but I have optimised it for using smileys. I have
altered the fonts to make smileys look good, while maintaining their usefulness
under "normal" circumstances. I think I was quite sucessful... If you have any
suggetions, please let me know! I hope you can make good use of these fonts. I
hope to hear from you! 'Til then...KEEP SMILING :-)

BTW, since I only access the InterNet via a Unix terminal, I would greatly
appreciate it if someone could convert these fonts to Unix format 8^) (no joke).


2. Legal stuff
   -----------

This software is provided as is. I do not claim it to be complete or bugfree.
Use it at your own risk. I can not be blamed for any damage that may occur
as a result of you using this software!


3. Author/Status
   -------------

This software is contactware. That means that if you like it, you must contact
me (via email or a postcard would be nice...). Even if you think this idea is
nonsence, let me know (use your veto ;-).

4. Specials
   --------

Here are some smiley-parts which are activated through special keys and look
almost as good as the originals (Note: the following apply for use with
American keymaps; for other countries, the ASCII values are included):

- Þ  SHIFT ALT t [222]
- ´  ALT f (->SPACE) [180]
- ¬  SHIFT ALT z [172]
- ¦  ALT SHIFT i [166]
- ¢  ALT 4 [162] (*)
- ø  ALT o [248] (*)
- ¸  ALT m [184] (not very 'compatible')

Furthermore some other chars, which can´t all be listed here, have been altered
in siye an position. A little bit special is the ´$´...

The following smileys should be tested right away:

- :-(` Have a look at this sadness (discovered by 'Koto')
- 8-(` Seems to look funny, said 'joker'
- ¦8-Þ My Champion, the best there ever was :)

Known bugs:

Unfortunately I can't claim these fonts to be bugfree. SmileHelvetica seems
not to work with 'Grapevine,' however, the original Helvetica also has this
problem. Futhermore, the so-called (at least by me ;) Gutgolf-smileys are not
displayed correctely (ie. ';c)',';o)' and so on...). I regret that this cannot
be changed as it would result in further incompatibilities :( It is for this
reason that I added the (*)-marked chars. They should provide a good alternative
(I hope)...

7. Risks & SideEffects
   -------------------

Regular use of SmileFonts very seldom results in spontane laughter followed by
the user rolling on the flor.
In some experiments with betatesters the so-called Smiley-Syndrom appeared,
which let´s people invent more and more ´unbelievable´ kinds of smileys (e.g.
Markus L.).
If during the usage of SmileFonts others than these sideeffects should show up,
please inform your root or administrator.
