                                How To Use

Well, anyone who has ever used ZXAM POKE Guide will know how to use this
as there are one or two slight similarites (ahem!)...

Anyway, just load up the emulator and the game, but don't run it. Then
load up this cool file and just pick the game you want, and click on the
options you want installed.

Or, if you want to be a bit different, you can use a file manager (like
Disk Master or DOpus) and go into the game's POKE directly by just reading
the POKE itsef instead of the main program (like say you wanted to cheat
at "Hawk Storm", you could just go into the "H" sub-directory and double
click on "HAWK_STORM.GUIDE" and go from there). The only exception to this
method is a game like After The War, or Game Over where there are more
than one part. Here you would click on the POKE for the section of the
game you wanted (eg "AFTER_THE_WAR_1.GUIDE as opposed to the file
"AFTER_THE_WAR.GUIDE"). It probably sounds more complicated than it is.

Umm.. I can't really think of any other instructions you need to know.
Oh yes, you MUST have REXXMAST running BEFORE you load the emulator,
otherwise it won't work. This is nothing to do with my file, but rather
the emulator looks to see if Rexxmast is running when it runs, and if
not doesn't install the Arexx commands... Well, that's the way I see it
anyway. If it's wrong, then tough luck on me I guess....

And that's it. Once you've finished choosing the options you need, just
click on RUN on the emulator's GUI.

Oh wait a minute.. I nearly forgot.. Some of the POKEs are for a
specified amount of something (eg. x lives). These work a bit
differently.. If you click on the POKE's button, it will put the value
at the maximum possible value (usually 255). If you don't want that
many, you enter the POKE written on the screen into the POKE option
on the emulator GUI, and press the POKE button.

For example...

Ball Crazy has this POKE available...

Lives = x                28086,x (x= 1-255).

If you click the button, you will get 255 lives (the maximum amount).
However, if you only want 10 lives, you would go to the "POKE" option
on the emulator GUI panel, and put the 28086 in the left hand box
(that's the one before the comma), and the number of lives you want
(eg 10) in the right box (after the comma). Then press POKE..

Hope that's explained simply enough for everyone....

UPDATES - How to make your own & getting more

Well, because this program is modular, making update POKEs is easy!

All you do is get the multiface POKE (Important <g>), make sure that
it works (Also important <g>), and get a text editor and load up an
existing POKE starting with the same letter as your new hack, and change
the appropriate details and save it off under a new name. You can then
change the menu for that letter and add the new game on.

I'm sorry if this explanation is a bit crap, but I've been working
on this thing for so long that it seems SO easy for me, that I may
skip a bit on the explanation....

You can then do what you like with your new POKE.. You can compile
a lot of them and then release them, and anyone who downloads them
can just change their menu themselves.

If you are releasing updates, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE(!!) make sure that
they WORK, as there is nothing worse than getting a multiface POKE
you've been desperately looking for, installing it, then finding it
doesn't work at all... I should know, I went through EVERY one in
ZXAMPOKE, every issue of YS (except 2) and Crash (except 5), and a
load of Sinclair User mags testing every one of them where possible.

Oh, and if you could make sure that the POKEs are set out in a
half-decently organised manner, that'd be nice. Just use the ones
I've done as a template and you should be OK...

Ermm... That's about it really.... Only, if you do release POKEs,
don't be lame and say you did them yourself if you just ripped them
out of a mag! That really sucks!

In case anyone clicked here thinking they were going to read about
updates from me, don't worry.. I will be releasing POKE lists every
once in a while for your enjoyment....

                           A QUICK NOTE FROM ME

Hello Speccy fans, and welcome to my contribution to the ever-growing Speccy emulation
sensation that's sweeping the nation (sorry about that, won't do it again!).

Almost every self-respecting Amiga owner and Speccy fan has the cool ZXAM emulator by
Antonio J. Pomar Rossello, and a great deal of those people will have ZXAMPoke by
Richard Korber.

I personally thought ZXAMPoke was a damn fine effort at a difficult idea - to have a
large amount of Speccy POKEs compiled and organised in a easy-to-use fashion. However,
the more I used it, I found a few @{"flaws" link flaws} which I thought could be
improved upon.

Once I had ironed these out (I think?!), the result is here in front of you. I hope
you like it. I've worked hard on it, testing EVERY one of the POKEs I could using
Speccy Sensations 2. If I found a POKE which didn't work, I'd try and hack the
game myself.

Oh, if anyone is wondering how this program got its name, well number 1 was
published, 2 was meant for released but then YS was stopped on the issue it was
meant to be released on (DOH!!!), so this is the next one...

@{B}@{U}GREETS@{UU}@{UB}

First up I really MUST thank Antonio J. Pomar Rossello (author of the ZXAM
emulator) and Richard Korber (author of ZXAMPOKE), without whom this wouldn't
be possible.

Also, all the cool dudes who hacked the Speccy games, and the mags they were
published in, especially YS - THANK YOU!

Oh yeah, and hello to the guys who were in my group, but weren't really -
M, J and R (though R did write the two HAs). They never actually hacked a
single game. It was all done by me. Hopefully that should mean something
to someone?

I'd like to individually thank (as many as I can remember)

@{u}SPECCY@{uu}

Jon North - Cool dude! Did you ever get the recording contract?
Jon Pillar - Thanks for the chats (and the cash) - Going back a bit here!
Linda Barker - The best looking Tipshop writer (and Ed)..
Jonathan Davies - Not as good looking, but still cool.
Ray - Get your A1200 fixed, and your Speccy back. I have a project for you!
Matt - I'd ask you, but you sold your Speccy for a Sam.
Jamie - The only speccy hacker who only owned an Amstrad (and NEVER HACKED!)
@{"Richard Swann" LINK R_Swann}
The Speccy Sensations compilers - Cool, but still a lot of duplication!

@{u}THE REST@{UU}

Cobra - Still a cool dude, despite being a PC owner now (Spit!)
Renegade - Thanks for the help m8 (and the [nearly] job)... And CONGRATS!
All the cool Access dudes across the globe. Sorry I can't name you all
individually, but it would take too long.
All the dudes I know on D&C
The cool guy at Active Software... I never did catch your name :)
Digger - Are you EVER in? Either working or out on the pull...

That's it for the greets, but before I go.. As it's Christmas (look, it
is at the moment I'm typing this, so don't argue OK?!), I've included a
secret goodie with this file. @{"How do you find it?" LINK "Secret"}

Oh, before I go. If any Speccy & Klondike fans are reading, I have done
a few Klondike cardsets using both Speccy LOADing SCREEN$ (hehe), and
game inlay cards as well.. Keep your eyes peeled for them and all of my
other sets as well! (End of obscenely blatant plug!)

@node "R_Swann" "A little mention for Richard Swann"

Dear Richard,

I just thought I'd give you a special little mention after finding I got
a mention in your PC "How To Hack" text on Speccy Sensations 2.

Just to put you right, I DID hack commercial protection systems, including
Bleepload and Speedlock. So ner (good old YS expression!)....

Next text you do, how about a REAL mention eh? Greetings to your nemesis
(according to Jon North anyway). It would be nice.

Or, if you want to be REALLY helpful, how about bringing out update texts
for this guide file using your multiface list you were punting for 1.50
(it said 3.50 in YS, I think?)... That'd be cool!

I had originally written a slightly nastier text, but I eventually decided
against it, as it seems pointless to start a war over a text written 3 or 4
years ago! You're probably a PHD now or summit!

One point, your text about becoming a hacking legend by hacking protection
systems implies that you are/were a legend yourself. Hmmm... A mistake or
rampant egotism? The readers can decide :)) ....

Your nemesis to the end [sort of]

Aha, so you want to know what the secret pary is eh? Well, all I'll say is
this... It wouldn't be much of a secret if I TOLD you how to find it now
would it? Go and find it yourself, and release a small text file giving
yourself credit for finding it...

Yes I know I could have kept this a MASSIVE secret, and not mention it, but
the way this program works, you wouldn't normally see it, unless you were
to shortcut using the main program and just call up the POKE you want in
it's own sub-directory..

I'll tell you what... If no one has found it by say, the end of January 96,
then I'll release a text file telling you what the secret is, and how to
get to it.... I can't say fairer than that.....

Oh, and don't worry, you don't have to be a hacker, or coder or anything
to get it working. Just a bit of common sense.

Happy hunting!

                                   Flaws

"Flaws?! FLAWS?!?!" I hear you cry (maybe). Well, yes. I don't want to upset
anyone, least of all Richard Körber (author of ZXAMPOKE), as I applaud any
efforts to produce anything for the Amiga (keeps it alive y'see), but there
were a couple of tiny little details I wasn't completely happy about with
ZXAMPOKE.

One main problem was that a lot of the POKEs didn't actually work. This isn't
really anyone's fault as we can't expect the author to have all the games. So,
once I got my eager paws on Speccy Sensations 2, I set about finding which
POKEs did and didn't work, and then finding LOTS more from mags like Your
Sinclair (@{B}THE@{UB} Speccy mag!), Sinclair User and Crash. Oh yes, and I also
hacked about @{"300 games" LINK Rastan/Rastan_Hacks.guide/main} myself. Yes, I was a Speccy hacker in a previous
incarnation (or something)...

Another flaw I found was that I hadn't seen any updates. Which brought me to the
next problem. To bring out an update, you had to send your individual POKEs to
the author, who would then compile them and bring out another large text file,
which was basically the same file, with just a few (relatively speaking anyway)
new POKEs.

So, I decided to take a more "Modular" approach to my design, so that anyone
wanting to bring out more POKEs could do so, and only have to release a few small
text files to patch onto the main directory. {"Click here for more details" LINK "Updates"}

Anyway, almost every POKE has been tested here. I have usually indicated if I
haven't been able to test it or not...

Oh yes, I also didn't like having to remember what each abbreviation meant.
Yes, I know that's just me being picky, but even after checking EVERY single
POKE in ZXAMPOKE, I found myself still having to refer back to the shortcuts.

Oh well, that's all the faults I can think of (then again, it is 5am), and a
Take That "song" is playing on MTV, so my brain is completely scrambled after
being assaulted by that plastic-manufactured-radio-friendly-teeny-bop drivel!
(And no I don't like them).. I'd rather listen to a C90 of speccy games
loading!

                                KNOWN BUGS

The only thing I can think you may find is that when you select a menu,
selecting "Contents" does not take you back to the start of the main menu,
but rather the start of that particular guide file. I have chosen to do it this
way, as I found that you could end up having multiple copies of the same file
loaded up if you loaded up several POKEs and selected contents, eating up
valuable memory. There's probably something really simple I'm missing, but I
couldn't get the file to work any oter way at all.

If anyone else can find a way of getting it to work then cool.. I don't
mind if you bring out a version with ALL of the POKEs fixed to work properly,
or just a description of how to fix them. If you do fix all of the files,
I don't mind if you add a section at the start giving yourself credit for the
fix, but that is the only part you may edit to that effect. Don't go saying
you wrote this! That really would be lame...

Oh, and before anyone suggests putting a button in, fine. That would work,
but it would mean having to edit about 1000 text files (EEK!), which I
didn't want to do for a feature I didn't think many people would use. I
just use "Retrace" myself in all my guide files..

Apart from that, I can't think of anything else to add. If you do find a
bug like a missing link (ie. you click a button and nothing, or the wrong
thing, happens), then either release a single file fix, or get in touch
with me. @{"Where?" LINK rastan/rastan_CALL_ME.guide/main}
