BERZBENCH (Some Wonderful Patterns and Icons for Workbench AGA) I often desired colorful patterns for my Wb, but I never found anything I liked. I have often seen fine icon collections, but never some patterns that I could really like. Well... I drew inspiration to the 'Art Déco' Style and BerzBench 1.0 was the result. I was very proud of it. BerzBench had given to my Workbench a very cool old-style look. But, after some weeks, I noted that the drawer and disk icons installed on my WB (I had a mix of some icon collections) were very dicordant with the patterns of BerzBench. So I decided the create some new icons (disk and drawer icons) that could harmonize with the BerzBench patterns. The result was quite good, so I decided to spread BerzBench on Aminet. All the Patterns of BerzBench have been heavily influenced by the marbles and the decorations in the Thermae Lorenzo BERZieri (Salsomaggiore Terme --- Parma --- Italy. If you rode in that part of Italy, please give a look at it!)... so the name BerzBench. @endnode @node "why" "why should I" Why should I install BerzBench? Well, I think the BerzBench patterns are the best patterns for Workbench I have ever seen. The basic idea is to give a fancy look to the external aspect of WB (patterns and disk-drawer icons), while inside it you are free to use the icon collection you prefer (like MWB or NewIcons). This has a cost: the Workbench with AT LEAST 64 colors (and a pair of BerzBench patterns installed) becomes a bit slower than usual, though the BerzBench patterns use a VERY LITTLE MEMORY. You have to choose: maybe you prefer an unusual- fanciful- exotic look for your WB, maybe you prefer a low-colors high-speed WB without any gadget, without any (sigh!) BerzBench. But first give a look at the examples in this archive... @endnode @node "What you need" "Requirements" You need: For the patterns: --- Workbench with at least 64 colors (up to 16 millions... I tested BerzBench with a 24 bit screen CybergfX and everything worked fine) For the drawer-(disk)-icons: --- NewIcons currently installed (you can find it on Aminet: pub/amiga/util/wb/newicons.lha) --- A program for installing icons in NewIcons format, like Iconinstaller by Tom Ekstrom. (Aminet: pub/amiga/util/wb/iconinstaller.lha) @endnode @node "Usage" "Install and use" INSTALLATION (for the patterns) Simply drag the drawer BerzBench in any directory of your HD, maybe Workbench: Prefs/Presets. USAGE (for the patterns) 1 --- Set the number of colors of your Workbench Screen to 64 (or more). 2--- Run the program WBPattern (you should find it in your Workbench partition, in the Prefs drawer. Click on Type:'Pattern' so to change it in 'Picture' then on 'Select Picture'. Find the BerzBench drawer and choose any image. Then press 'Test' ... and you can admire the result. Now you should click on Placement 'Workbench': the name 'Windows' (ehmmm... ugly name...) should appear. Do the same... so you can have a new image for the windows, too. All the possible pattern combinations between Workbench and Windows are more than 350, but the really cool ones should be around twenty, in my opinion... They should be enough for you, anyway. INSTALLATION and USAGE (for the disk-drawer icons) Start the program @{"Iconinstaller" link "Iconinstaller" 0}. Replace the icon drawers of your Workbench with the icons of BerzBench. This should require only a few minutes. Let you experiment a bit: try the best colors/readability combination between the patterns and the icons. Remember the basic idea of BerzBench: to replace the external look of the Workbench (patterns and disk-drawer icons) with a fancy 1910s- 1920s fashion, while inside you can maintain any icon collection. ATTENTION: I assume that you have the @{"NewIcons" link "NewIcons" 0} patch installed and currently running. Without it you will never be able to see BerzBench icons!!! @endnode @node "New" "What's new" What has changed since BerzBench 1.1c: --- Added 3 icons in Art Deco style for Disks and drawers (NewIcons standard) --- Added a global preview picture (Pict_Base.Jpeg). All the 18 patterns and the 6 Disk-Drawer icons are displayed together. --- Changed the example picture. @endnode @node "NewIcons" "NewIcons" NewIcons is a new system patch that makes icons look good on any Workbench, without taking care about the palette. The icons created with this new system contain color information, so they are remapped to the current Workbench screen colors, and will look good on a screen with any palette (if there is a reasonable number of colors, and if the patch is in use). You can find NewIcons on Aminet. The NewIcons standard is developed by Nicola Salmoria. Price: Freeware @endnode @node "Iconinstaller" "Iconinstaller" Iconinstaller is a tool developed by Tom Ekstrom to aid in icon management. Both standard icons and NewIcons are supported. It is very easy to use with simple dragging and dropping, or alternatively using standard ASL file requesters. Whole drawers of icons can be installed with a single command (that is very good for installing the drawer-icons of BerzBench on whole directories of your old Workbench...) No files on BerzBench archive can be changed. BerzBench can be inserted in any PD compilation, only if you do not ask more the $ 5 for the disk or $ 35 for the CD or the equivalent in another currency (I would be very grateful if you could inform me and send me a copy of the disk or the CD you have put BerzBench on).
