GMC-BBS Version 2.20 23-07-1995 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Introduction GMC-BBS is a mailbox-program written for the Commodore AMIGA by Gerhard and Christine Moerth. This manual will guide you through the installation and helps you handling the software. Generally a Bulletin Board System (BBS) is a program which clearly arranges a lot of notes. Users also can read and write private mails or up- and download programs. Every operation is protected by a security level. GMC-BBS Version 2.20 is shareware. This means that you can make as many copies as you want and pass them to as many persons (also on electronic way) as possible. The share version is limited as follows: the box is ready only one week from date of first installation, the number of users, up- downloads, messages and private mails is limited to 15. In the following you find a listing of many details of the program - use- ful if you want to compare it with other programs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bulletins, messages and files can be arranged in maximal 100 directories with unlimited subdirectories. Each directory has it's own security level. Directories and subdirectories can contain any number of bulletins, messages and files. The limit is only the available disk space. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- GMC-BBS uses external and internal transfer protocols. At the moment "X-modem-checksum" and "x-modem-CRC" are integrated. The program switches automatically to the protocol of the caller. You can include external protocols such as X-modem, Y-modem, Z-modem, Bi-Modem etc. which correspond with XPR standard with the configuration file. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The security level can be individually set for every user. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- All serial I/O-routines are optimized by hand for best performance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The SysOp can change time limit, security level, printer output, screen output, serial input and output online at any time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shortcuts for the main functions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Usergroups with a special info text can be created and time limits can be given out unlimited. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The emulations TTY, TTY+CLS, VT100/ANSI, VT100/ANSI+CLS can be set by every user. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special characters are accepted. From OS 2.0 on you can use all graphic possibilities of the ANSI emulation with an IBM font. It is urgently recommended to use operating system 2.0 or higher. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- GMC-BBS was written for highest speed, reliability and flexibility. Efficient programming technique leads to 100% multitasking use under OS 1.2, 1.3, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1. The program was written in C and tested on different machines. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- NTSC, PAL and drivers for the serial.device or for internal modems are configured in the TOOL-TYPES. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The serial.device can be released to use other terminal programs without restarting GMC-BBS. You can switch the mailbox to "not ready" to backup your hard disk. During this time there will be no access on the hard disk or floppy disk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Internal, external and highspeed modems are supported perfectly (e.g. higher DTE speed between computer and modem which allows data compression). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Detecting fax call and transmission to external fax programs is possible. At the moment ready scripts for Multifax (TKR) and TrapFax (Village Tronic) are included. If your modem has no fax detection or your fax software cannot handle an existing line you can also connect an external fax switch. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Freely to configure and expand. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Multitasking will not be effected. You can do whatever you want, GMC-BBS is programmed correctly so it can run in the background. NOTE: There cannot be enough RAM. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built in timer for automatically harddisk-parking. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built in timer for periodically loading of the system time. The system time is checked and even the program will be stopped because suggestive working is not possible without correct time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Online packing for download-files can be used by every user (e.g. LHA, LZH, ZOO, ARC, ...). After finishing the user gets a message. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The flashing power LED shows you, if you had user in your mailbox. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call Back function (A given number will be dialed and after connecting you will be in the Logon Sequence.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If the configuration of the modem is faulty the respective line will be printed which is very useful for correction. Slow modems are supported as well as fast modems. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Integrated up- and download ratio, which can be effective on files or bytes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Automatic carriage return and line feed at the end of the line in the chat mode. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hardware - Requirements - AMIGA 500/600/1000/1200/2000/2500/3000/4000/CDTV - 1 MB RAM - 2 Diskdrives or one diskdrive and a harddisk - Modem (For testing you need no modem) (If no modem is connected or the modem doesnīt support the baud rate of the bbs.config the serial device will be set OFF) Hardware - Compatibility - Memoryboards are supported. NOTE: 512 kB extensions between $C00000 and $C7FFFF (used in older A2000A or A500) might cause a malfunction or crash of the program) - All compatible Turboboards - All compatible Harddisks - All compatible AMIGA diskdrives of any size (CD-ROM too) - All compatible AMIGA I/O cards - All modems with AT commands (also internal modems.) - All printers (parallel and serial) System - Configuration System configuration means saving a lot of text files with the necessary information. You can use any editor like ED, DME, MicroEmacs, ... The used file is named bbs.config and is placed in your S: drawer or in the actual GMC-BBS directory. The most important comments you find in the file itself. You can also change: Guest.Text, Info.Text, Join.Text, Joined.Text, Logon.Text, Logoff.Text, MailboxReady.Text, NewUser.Text. The following escape-sequences can be used in the text: Esc< no More [Y/n] : with AnyKey ... Esc> with More [Y/n] : with AnyKey ... Esc- no More [Y/n] : no AnyKey ... Esc+ with More [Y/n] : at once AnyKey ... If no such escape-sequence is used you will be asked More [Y/n]: and at the end of the text the input of AnyKey... is expected. These commands can also be used at Online HelpText, Read Bulletin, Read Doc Files and Read Message. If you start GMC-BBS from disk remove the write protection so that the system files and user data can be saved. In other case the program saves the files to the Ram Disk without a message. Basic information to "bbs.config": The keywords have to be written on the left border without a blank. The "=" may not have blanks before and after that. The sequence of keywords can be changed in any way. The only exception are keywords which are in numerical order ("Prot_UL_Name_0= before PROT_UL_Name_1 ...). Comments can be written without any care (except the "=", it is reserved for the keywords). Try to keep the comments as short as possible, so the program can start faster. The following changes in the bbs.config are possible and necessary: SystemName=ŧŧŧ GMC-BBS V2.20 ŦŦŦ %H:%M:%S This text is free for your board name up to 30 characters. It will appear on the left side of the menu and on the input line. And it maybe contains the following fill-ins for the remaining online time: %H for the hours, %M for the minutes and %S for the seconds. SystemSysop=Gerhard MOERTH Individual text with up to 30 characters. Appears at Chat SysOp and System Statistics. SystemUsersMax=300 This is the setting of the maximum number of users, limit is your harddisk capacity. If the number is exceeded an error message is displayed at Join as a Member. You need 512 Byte per user on your disk. SystemFileLocation=RAM: Path for the capture.file which is created when "File Output = ON" is selected. SystemProtLocation=GMC-BBS:System/ Directory in which you can find the external transfer protocols and some utilities like PF. SystemStatLocation=GMC-BBS:System/ Directory in which the Stat.File is being created when you start the GMC-BBS. SystemTextLocation=GMC-BBS:Text_English/ Directory in which Guest.Text, Info.Text, Join.Text, Joined.Text, Logoff.Text, Logon.Text, MailboxReady.Text, NewUser.Text, BM_Help.Text, FS_Help.Text, MB_Help.Text, MM_Help.Text, PM_Help.Text, SM_Help.Text, UM_Help.Text need to be located because GMC-BBS is searching for them in this directory. SystemUserLocation:=GMC-BBS:System/ Directory in which the file User.Data is created on the first start of the program. Pack_Files=ON If enabled "PF = Pack Files" will appear on the File System Menu. Pack_Files makes it possible for the user to pack the files he wants to load online. The maximum is 10 files. To use this option you need at least 2 MB RAM. On starting PF there will be created a directory SYS: Temp from which the packed files can be loaded. Always the last 3 users files are saved there. In the file comment the user number and user name of the respective user is shown so that they can find their own files easier. Itīs not necessary to wait online, so itīs a lot of money you can save. When the packing is finished the user gets a message. WARNING: If you use ParkHD_Delay be careful. Maybe your Amiga is still packing and thatīs the reason why you should set the delay time not too short. Power_Led_Display=OFF If selected ON the flashing power led signals you that you had a user in your bbs. (It will disappear if you enter your system with "SysOp- LogOn") Prot_Internal=OFF There are four possibilities: ON, OFF, UL, DL ON = The internal X-Modem up- and download protocols are displayed in the Setup-Menu under "CT = Change Transfer". OFF = Above mentioned protocols are not displayed and not usable. UL = Only the internal X-Modem upload protocol is displayed. DL = Only the internal X-Modem download protocol is displayed. ParkHD_Delay=-1 Here you can set the HDPark delay-time. (maximum is 32768 sec.) If a user has left your box the harddisk will be parked automatically after this time. If you donīt want to use this option "-1" must be set. To use this option you need the two programs "Park" and "Unpark" in your RAM:env/BBS/ directory (you get them e.g. with the Advantage 2000 HD-Controller by ICD Inc.) If you use OS 2.0 you can automate this step as follows: Copy the files in SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/BBS/ (will be copied auto- matically to the RAM directory if you boot). SetClock_Delay=3600 As the Amiga system time is not very exact, the mailbox program loads the time of the internal clock from time to time. The size of the intervals is set with this function in seconds. Additionally the time is loaded on each user logon. If you have no hardware clock enter -1. The value of SetClock_Delay have to be larger than ParkHD_Delay and and smaller than 32768. To minimize harddisk activity SetClock should be loaded resident. Security_Min_BM=10 BM = Bulletins Menu Security_Min_FS=10 FS = File System Security_Min_MB=10 MB = Message Board Security_Min_PM=10 PM = Private Mail Security_Min_SM=10 SM = Setup Menu Security_Min_UM=10 UM = User Menu These are the minimum security_level to execute these menus Security_Min_SC=50 SC = Set Directory or File Comment Security_Min_WB=60 WB = Write Bulletin Security_Min_MD=70 MD = Make Directories Security_Min_RE=80 RE = Rename Directories or Files Security_Min_DE=90 DE = Delete Directories or Files Security_Min_EU=100 EU = Edit User These are the minimum security level to execute these functions. SysOp_Ready=YES Copyright=OFF File_Out=ON Printer_Out=OFF Serial_Device=ON Speech_Out=ON These are the default values on the mailbox start. Of course they could be changed at any time. ModemAnswer=ATA Command for your modem to pick up. ModemAttn=0 ASCII character (0-255) which sets your modem to the command mode. It has to be the same as you select in ModemOpen with S2=0. ModemBusy=BUSY Command which is sent by the modem if it has detected a busy signal after dialing. ModemError=ERROR Modem has encountered an invalid command line or the command buffer is overflowed. ModemFastConnect=*CONNECT* This string was made for highspeed modems which send first a carrier message with the corresponding baud rate and then recognize error correction and data compression. If the logon sequence is started without waiting for the CONNECT string the modem would possibly hang up. ModemFaxRecog=+FCON This string is sent to the program by the modem if a fax call is detected. ModemHandshaking=RTS/CTS OFF No handshaking. XON/XOFF XON/XOFF (software) will be used. RTS/CTS RTS/CTS (hardware) will be used, the pins 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,20 in your serial cable have to be connected. ModemHangUp=ATH0 This command is sent to your modem on every logoff of an user and every manual reset to force it to hang up. ModemNoAnswer=NO ANSWER Command which is sent by the modem if 5 seconds of silence in the line were detected. ModemNoCarrier=NO CARRIER Command which is sent by the modem if no carrier was detected. ModemNoDialtone=NO DIALTONE Command which is sent by the modem if no dialtone was detected. ModemOk=OK Command which is sent by the modem if the command has been executed. ModemOpen1=ATE0M0S0=0S2=0 Modem initialization - will be sent to the modem after starting the program or opening the serial.device (for commands look to your modem- manual). ModemOpen2= Modem initialization - will be sent to the modem after starting the program or opening the serial.device (for commands look to your modem- manual). If all initializations could be made in the first string leave this one blank. ModemOpenFax1=AT+FAA=1 Modem initialization - will be sent to the modem after starting the program or opening the serial.device (for commands look to your modem- manual). If your modem doesnīt need special initializations for the fax handling leave this string blank. ModemOpenFax2=AT+FDIS=1,3,0,0,0,0,0,0 Modem initialization - will be sent to the modem after starting the program or opening the serial.device (for commands look to your modem- manual). If all initializations could be made in the first string leave this one blank. ModemOpenFax3=AT+FLID=" +43 1 123-45-67" Modem initialization - will be sent to the modem after starting the program or opening the serial.device (for commands look to your modem- manual). If all initializations could be made in the first string leave this one blank. ModemReset=ATZ0 Command which is sent to the modem before starting and after leaving the GMC-BBS or after closing the serial.device. It resets the modem. ModemRing=RING Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS on each phone ring. ModemRingCount=1 Number of rings before the modem picks up. Modem300=*300* Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS to sign a connection with 300 bps. The "*" can be used as joker which will be useful for the many different modem types because you need not write the long correct connect string. E.g. instead of "CARRIER 9600/V.42bis/LAP-M/CONNECT 38400" you enter simply "*9600*" which will be unmistakable. Modem1200=*1200* Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS to sign a connection with 1200 bps. Modem2400=*2400* Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS to sign a connection with 2400 bps. Modem4800=4800* Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS to sign a connection with 4800 bps. Modem7200=*7200* Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS to sign a connection with 7200 bps. Modem9600=*9600* Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS to sign a connection with 9600 bps. Modem12000=*12000* Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS to sign a connection with 12000 bps. Modem14400=14400* Identification which is sent from the modem to GMC-BBS to sign a connection with 14400 bps. Modem16800=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem19200=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem21600=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem24000=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem26400=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem28800=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem31200=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem33600=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem36000=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem38400=DTE-SPEED This baud rate is used between your modem and your computer and is independant from the connect rate of the modem. This option is only possible if you use handshaking (XON/XOFF or RTS/CTS). This setting have to be higher than the highest possible speed of your modem without data compression. Modem57600=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem64000=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem76800=OFF This speed is actually not used. Modem115200=OFF This speed is actually not used. ************************************************************************* Basic information for the use with external transfer protocols: The reason for using external protocols is very simple: *) You can save a lot of RAM used by the bbs.prg. *) You can use only the protocols that you want. *) Itīs easy to update the protocols without updating the GMC-BBS *) You can use up to 100 (0-99) different protocols. IMPORTANT: If an external protocol is opening the serial.device using the shared mode you have to append the option "%S". Some of the internal modems donīt have this option. (e.g. the SUPRA- MODEM using the modem0.device.) Here you have to expand the DTR delay time to 1 - 1.5 seconds or the modem will hang up. (e.g. S25=100 at the option ModemOpen) It is also possible to force the modem to ignore DTR signals. (e.g. &D0 ModemOpen) Options: %A => Screen address of GMC-BBS which will be written in HEX. This is important to put the external protocols on the bbs screen. %B => At the start of the external protocol the actual baud- rate will be handed over. %D => Device name will be displayed. (Default = serial.device) %F => Filename of the transferred file (up- or download). If this option is not set the protocol has to hand over the name. (Z-Modem) In this case the file comment will be written after the upload. Otherwise the user number and the user name will be added. %P => Path to the file which will be transferred. %S => serial.device keeps open in shared mode. %U => Unit number will be displayed (default: 0). %0 => Filename of the 1st. file to be downloaded. This option can only be used if the protocol can handle more than one file, otherwise "%F" has to be used. (read Z-modem download.) If OS 1.2 or OS 1.3 is used there can only 3 files entered per download. %1 => Filename of the 2nd. file to be downloaded. .. %9 => Filename of the 10th. file to be downloaded. BM_CA_Path_0=GMC-BBS: This is the path to the root directory for the mailbox users in the bulletins menu. BM_CA_Directory_0=Bulletins_Menu/ This is the name for the root directory. If the root directory is a volume (e.g. DH0:, DF0:, RAM:, NET: etc.), the path can be dropped. BM_CA_Comment_0=Bulletins Menu Area Comment which appears in the list of the available areas. (CA = Change Area) BM_Security_RB_0=0 The lowest security level which is necessary to use this directory. NOTE: At the entrance into this menu the user is always in the main directory "0". (BM_CA_Path0 ...). Here you shouldnīt raise the minimum security level too high -> nobody could enter your Bulletins Menu. ************************************************************************* FS_CA_Path_0=GMC-BBS: Path to the root directory for "File System". You can set them in the config file, so that only these users get the permission to use the menus which have the corresponding security level. Through specific setting of the security levels itīs possible to delegate the servicing of the box. The security levels can be set from 0...100. Note: Nobody will ever get a list of areas which have a higher user level than him. Maximum length of names etc. User Name: 4 - 40 characters (Special characters are accepted, first character must not be a numeral). Password: 1 - 20 characters (Special characters are accepted). File Name: 1 - 30 characters (No Special characters will be accepted). File Comment: 1 - 76 characters (Special characters are accepted). Available Menus Offline GMC-BBS Right Amiga+G = Local Guest Logon without password Right Amiga+L = Local Logon (simulating login via modem) Right Amiga+S = Local SysOp Logon without password Right Amiga+X = Exit GMC-BBS Special Right Amiga+A = About Right Amiga+E = Edit User only local (also online possible) Right Amiga+M = Mailbox Ready Yes/No (default: Yes) Right Amiga+R = Reset System (also online possible) Right Amiga+D = Serial Device On/Off (default: On) Right Amiga+H = Speech Out On/Off (also online possible, default: On) If the serial.device is set OFF the program or the fax program could be started using the external fax switch. Function Keys Off- & Online F1 = SysOp Ready Yes/No If enabled a signal is played if a user wants to chat (CS) and the speech output speaks the name of the user. the functions key input F5 and screen output F9 will be enabled. F2 = Time + 10 min Raises at once the system time of the actual user by 10 minutes (only for the current logon). F3 = Time - 10 min Reduces at once the system time of the actual user by 10 minutes (only for the current logon). F4 = Copyright On/Off Online: Shows User.Number, User.Name, Highest Security Level and Current Action. Offline: Shows either Copyright or Date and Time, number of BBS, FAX, New User Calls and Current Action. F5 = Keyboard On/Off If enabled your keyboard is locked. F6 = Serial input On/Off Useful if you want to lock the userīs key input online so that you can guide him through the system or during the chat if you donīt want to be interrupted. F7 = File Output On/Off This option generates the capture file. All action in your bbs will be recorded and written to this file. F8 = Printer Output On/Off Generates a hardcopy and prints any action. Useful to print information during a chat etc. F9 = Screen Output On/Off Should be disabled if you don't want to see what happens on the screen. The status line will inform you about the activities. The serial output will be increased. This function is only possible on the host. The user is locked temporarily and gets a corresponding message. This will make it possible to raise the user level online to show him the mailbox. On arrival of the shareware contribution you get your personal registration number which you enter in the field Comment SysOp.
