RJWho v.71 04-Feb-93 ~~~~~~~~~~ Introduction ~~~~~~~~~~~~ RJWho is a tool for sysops of DLG Pro BBS systems. Not having been pleased by the typical 'Who' functions available for DLG, I decided to take a bit of a rest from my DlgQWK programming duties and whip up my version of a 'Who's online'. Note that RJWho is can ONLY be run offline- it is definitely not intended as a online tool. But RJWho offers _far_ more features than simply showing who is online. For example: 1) RJWho is a OS2.0-only, intuition based program. It has nifty 2.0 features built in to make life a bit easier on you. 2) RJWho has a very simple commandline and is extremely intuitive. (This version does not have WB launching yet- please just run it from the CLI according to the 'Getting Started' section of this documentation.) 3) Not only can RJWho show you who is on (or not) online- but you can quickly open/close screens, get/free ports, initiate a chat, or kick somebody off any port with the simple click of a button. 4) RJWho has a built in, elegant small font that I needed to accomplish as much as I could without burning up valuable screen real estate. 5) RJWho is bug-free (as far as I have determined, and I HATE to release anything that has the slightest hint of a bug. ) 6) RJWho is system friendly- it consumes very little memory and cpu time, and takes full advantage of dlg.library. 7) RJWho can open on any public screen- specified via the commandline. I wrote this out of a need to have such a tool for myself- and I felt maybe other sysops might also find this tool invaluable as well. Give it a whirl- I think you will like it! Requirements ~~~~~~~~~~~~ RJWho requires you have DLG Pro BBS v.995 or later, running on any Amiga computer. You MUST be running KS/WB2.0 or higher for RJWho to function. Getting Started ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is incredibly easy- no kidding! Just put RJWho somewhere on your hard drive (you do have a hard drive, no?). At any CLI, type the following: RJWho [options] port ... where 'port' would be the actual ports you wish RJWho to monitor. You must supply at least ONE port name- any others are optional. Example: RJWho TL0 TR1 TR2 TR6 RJWho will then open a beautiful window on your workbench screen, configuring it's size automatically as determined by how many ports you wish to monitor. Options ~~~~~~~ There are now commandline options available to configure RJWho a bit differently. These options MUST appear on the commandline _before_ the ports you wish RJWHo to monitor. The options are: -s ScreenName You can specify what public screen you wish RJWho to open it's window on, such as DialogMail, Workbench, etc. Currently defaults to Workbench. Remember that the public screen name specified is case sensitive! -x Position RJWho's window at pixels from the left -y Position RJWho's window at pixels from the top. Example: RJWho -s DialogMail -x 40 -y 175 tr1 tr2 tr3 WOW- what do those gadgets do? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Basically, you will find the window contains the following: 1) A display area in the middle of the window. This is where RJWho outputs the status of each of the ports you have specified. 2) A gadget to the right of each line display. This gadget is labeled with the port that it corresponds to, and when depressed will initiate the action showing in the 'Action' gadget. 3) The 'Action' gadget. This gadget cycles through the numerous actions that can be selected when it is clicked on. Nothing actually happens when you click on it (other than it cycling through the options). Rather, the action currently showing will be what happens when you click on one of the port gadgets. Here is a brief descripion of what each of the 'Action' functions do: Snoop ~~~~~ Opens a screen up on the port you select. The screen opened is configured by reading the proper display file you configured for that port. Close ~~~~~ Closes a screen that is currently open on the selected port. GetPort ~~~~~~~ Tries to get an immediate lock on a port. If succesful, the port is taken offline and is no longer accessable to DLG. This is useful if you wish to use that particular serial port for another function. FrePort ~~~~~~~ This will free a port that you previously locked with the 'GetPort' function above. The port will be re-installed so that it is again accessable to DLG. Chat ~~~~ This will attempt to load and run DLG:Chat, so that you can chat with the user currently on the port you selected. NOTE: DLG:Chat has a known bug wherein it will actually try to run, even though there may be nobody on that line. This results in a 'phantom' T:TRX.USER' file. This can result in erroneous readings about the port status. Both DLG and RJWho can be (and are) affected by this. The moral? Don't try to 'Chat' with a port if there is nobody online! Remove ~~~~~~ This will immediately attempt to boot the user off that port. Not always reliable in certain circumstances, but works about 98% of the time. The port will be returned to 'Answer' mode afterwards. 4) That about covers it, except for the 'hidden' gadgets. RJWho does have the standard 'Close', 'Windowsizing', 'Front-to-Back', and 'Zoom' gadgets. They are just a bit unconventional, and some are hidden. You can use these just like you normally would. I just wanted to hide them from view, as the cosmetics of these gadgets really detracted from what I felt to be a clean, non-busy window. Oh, there is also a drag bar too. In Closing ~~~~~~~~~~ See what I mean? A simple, yet elegant program you can use to keep track of what is going on with your system. I have numerous improvements in mind, and am more than welcome to your suggestions. RJWho is FREEWARE.
