Introduction Welcome to Hollywood Squares 3.0 (HWS). This new version of Hollywood Squares is based upon Hollywood Squares 2.1 by Barry Christiansen. As far as we know, Hollywood Squares is not copyrighted. At least, Version 2.1 made no mention of it. Therefore, we decided to do a complete rewrite from the ground up in C. We made it backward compatible with the data files for Version 2.1 and retained most of the game play, so previous players of Hollywood Squares will be on familiar ground. This is our first C program, and it only uses the standard C functions. Therefore, porting it to another computer would not be hard, if anybody is interested. Features of this version are: - Speed... Lets just say that you no longer have to wait for the computer to take its turn. - Looks nicer. - Stable... As far as it has been tested, HWS has not crashed/gurued/hung the bbs machine in anyway. HWS always cleans up after itself. All memory is deallocated, and all temporary files are deleted. (This is providing you are using the right BBS software.) - Did I mention speed ? - Fully backward compatable with Version 2.1 of HollyWood Squares. - You can't get the same question again in the same game. - Really fast too. (Registered version) - Challenge Game where the top person gets bonus online time. We have made the assumtion that 99% of people can handle ansi screen positioning codes. We have given the option for a colour or non colour version (for the 14.4K+ speed freaks who want that bit extra). But both these modes need ansi screen positioning to place the questions/answers/markers/etc. There are two forms of game play. Option P is the same as Hollywood Squares 2.1. The opponent is choosen randomly from the users that have played HWS. Option C is the challenge game. Your opponent is the user above you in the list of players (Option V). This list is ordered by rank. With the person at the top getting a bonus amount of online time set by the Sysop. If you win the game then you switch places with your opponent. Otherwise, you switch places with the user below you in the list. We have decided to release this as a Shareware title, but with a small twist. If you register this program, you will also receive a registered updated version of The Bank and The Wall for FREE. We understand that not all sysops can afford to spend money on everything, but please consider the authors. If you are really hard up, then you could try the follow things. 1 - Ask your users to chip in 1 or 2 dollars from each user that plays HWS, and you will soon have the registration fee. 2 - Send us some netmail, and maybe, we can work something out. We will also swap a registered version of HWS for your own registered software if you are a author. Warning :- Somethings don't work without the keyfile! B. Installation Installation is easy as pie... 1 - Make a directory for the files, and place them there. 2 - Set up DLG with the following setings, where .../ is the path [ 2] Executable: (path/name) .../hws %uname %ansi .../HWS.cfg %port [ 5] Type: Executable [ 9] Hidden: NO [10] Load type: OVERLAY [12] Pend messages: YES [13] Cli mode: NO [14] Pause on completion: NO 3 - Edit the config file and place it in the directory you gave on the command line. Registered vs UnRegistered The unregistered version, is the same as the registered version, but has a limited number of plays per day for each user. D. All question files are of the following format question here 1 line only correct answer wrong answer wrong answer wrong answer next question etc Please note there is only one line between them. 2. Due to problems in Jrcomm sometime the background is messed up this is not our fault, it works fine if JR is in 16 colour mode but not in 8. Terminus fixes this as does Gpterm. 3. Run snoopdos, to make sure that the error is just due to a missing file/directory/assign needed. When sending in bug reports, please state exactly under what circumstances the bug occurred, what equipment was used and what happened. If possible, please give us a step-by-step description of how to reproduce the bug. Please netmail the bug report to 3:714/908.0 We would welcome any suggestions for improvements. If you create your own question files, please send us a copy, and we will include them in future releases of HWS. You will, of course, be credited for them. F. Past & Future We make no promise to keep up development of HWS but at this stage a better version of HWS is likely. G.
