CBS New Season Preview Cosby Series premiere: Monday, September 16, 8PM ET/PT. Cosby returns to prime time in a comedy about what it means to be the last sane man in an insane world. He plays a man with a type-A personality, forced to retire against his will, who now finds his outlet in railing against all the everyday nuisances the rest of us have learned to endure. Whether it be through concert appearances or recordings, television or feature films, commercials or education, Cosby has the ability to touch people's lives. It was during Cosby's nightclub circuit period that he made the transition from standup comic to actor in the series "I Spy," opposite Robert Culp. This co-starring role was instrumental in breaking the racial barriers in television. During the series' run, Cosby earned three Emmy Awards for Best Actor. His additional television credits include "The Bill Cosby Show," the variety show "Cos" and the hit comedy series "The Cosby Show," which also starred his current television wife, Phylicia Rashad. As an executive producer, Cosby produced the series "A Different World" with the producing team of Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner. Cosby made his feature film debut in "Man and Boy," a powerful drama set in the post-Civil War era. His additional film credits include "Uptown Saturday Night" and its sequel, "Let's Do It Again," as well as "Mother, Jugs and Speed," "A Piece of the Action" and "California Suite." Included in Cosby's successful recording career, which has resulted in numerous albums and singles that hit the national pop charts, are the jazz albums "Where You Lay Your Head" and "My Appreciation" and the comedy albums "Bill Cosby Is a Very Funny Fellow...Right!" "I Started Out as a Child," "Why Is There Air?" "Wonderfulness," "Revenge," "200 MPH" and "Bill Cosby: O'Baby!" His efforts in comedy recordings earned him a total of five Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Album. As an author, his books Fatherhood and Time Flies became record-breaking sellers in the publishing industry. Both of them occupied The New York Times Best Sellers list, as did his book Childhood. Cosby received his bachelor's degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. He later attended the University of Massachusetts, receiving his master's degree in 1972 and his doctorate in education in 1977. Besides his involvement with a host of charity organizations, Cosby remains an active trustee of Temple University. Cosby was born in Philadelphia. He is married to the former Camille Hanks, and they are parents to four daughters and one son. Cosby splits his time between New York and Massachusetts. His birth date is July 12. MADELINE KAHN (Pauline) Madeline Kahn is a Tony, Emmy, People's Choice and Drama Desk Award winner and two-time Oscar nominee. For her role as Gorgeous Teitelbaum in the 1993 Broadway production of "The Sisters Rosensweig" she won a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award. She also received Tony nominations for "On the Twentieth Century," "Born Yesterday" and "In the Boom Boom Room," which also earned her a Drama Desk Award. In addition to her many stage credits, Kahn has appeared in numerous feature films, including "Paper Moon" and "Blazing Saddles" (both of which earned her Academy Award nominations), "What's Up Doc," "Young Frankenstein," "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother," "High Anxiety," "First Family" and "History of the World, Part One." She won a People's Choice Award for her performance in the series "Oh, Madeline." Her additional television credits include "Mister President," "Sesame Street," "Saturday Night Live" and Gershwin, Berlin and Sondheim galas. She received an Emmy Award in 1987 for Outstanding Performer in Children's Programming for an after-school special. She was born in Boston and now lives in New York. Her birth date in Sept. 29. PHYLICIA RASHAD (Ruth Lucas) Phylicia Rashad is known to television viewers for her role as Claire Huxtable on "The Cosby Show," a series that lasted eight years and earned her two Emmy Award nominations and a People's Choice Award for Favorite Television Female Performer. Rashad's television credits also include guest appearances in the series "Touched By An Angel," on the CBS Television Network, and "A Different World" and roles in the television films "David's Mother," on the Network, "Jailbirds" and "False Witness," along with "Polly" and "Polly--Comin' Home!" both directed by her sister, Debbie Allen. Rashad can currently be seen in the feature film "Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored" and on stage in Atlanta in "Blues for an Alabama Skies," the Pearl Cleage drama set in 1930s Harlem. Rashad, who is also an established singer, has appeared on Broadway in "Jelly's Last Jam," "Into the Woods," "Dreamgirls" and "The Wiz." She has also shared the stage with Bill Cosby in Las Vegas and performed with the Dallas Symphony and the Oklahoma Symphonic. She is a native of Houston and was graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Howard University. She also received honorary doctorates from Providence College in Rhode Island, Morris Brown College in Atlanta and Barber-Scotia College in Concord, N.C. and is a recipient of Harvard University's Foundation Award. She is an active volunteer for several charitable organizations, including ETA (Educational Teachers Association), which is designed to encourage students to go into the education field. Rashad and her husband, sportscaster Ahmad Rashad, live in Mount Vernon, N.Y. with their son, Billy, and daughter, Condola Phylea. The actress' birth date is June 19.
