The "CHiPs" Season 1 Episode Guide The "CHiPs" Episode Guide - 1977-78 Pilot Episode - September 15, 1977 101 - Pilot Episode (09/15/77) Briefing: Plot: While officers Ponch and Baker are involved in the difficult job of trying to break up a car theft ring, they are called on to deal with a freeway mishap involving the spillage of industrial glue. In the first two minutes of the episode, Ponch nearly becomes one with the freeway during a high speed pursuit of a stolen Porsche. The scene is truly amazing seeing Ponch do a 360 into the grassy freeway embankment and the only thing Jon does is laugh at him! Guest Stars: Paul Mantee, Brooke Bundy Note: The pilot episode had no title. 102 - "Undertow" (09/22/77) Briefing: Tow truck driver robbing women Plot: A tow truck driver robs a woman whose car broke down. While responding to an accident, Ponch breathes an unknown gas (which Fritz tells Brouillette (Mary 5) is nitrous oxide). Upon returning to central, Ponch begins acting loopy. (The viewers also learn he's seeing double.) He dances around a bit, acts buddy-buddy with Getraer, and makes a personal phone call. Out on the highway, Jon and Loopy pull over Jim Bakus. Ponch tries to give him a sobriety test but can't do it himself. When Ponch hears a dispatch on the tow truck robber, he speeds off with Jon chasing him. Jon pulls over Ponch (in a classic "CHiPs" moment!) Jon tells him, "The party's over, Hot Dog." Meanwhile, the tow truck shows up at the woman's location. Later, on the basketball court, the "CHiPs" team loses without Ponch. After the game, Jon goes out to his crappy car and beats up a guy who refused to get off of it. While Jon visits Ponch, in his first of many hospital stays of the series, a nasty nurse takes his Ding Dong and gives him a shot in his rear. He decides to stay for the sponge bath from the sexy nurse. The next day, while discussing "sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows," a bird craps on Ponch's windshield. Stopping at a gas station, they realize it's being robbed. Jon chases the robber who ends up crashing into a tree. Jon gives him medical attention and psychiatric counseling. Ponch shows up to the briefing with a doctor's note. After the briefing, Jon gives a speeding ticket to a guy and his bird and notices a tow truck "assisting" a woman. Ponch and Jon chase him north on the Golden State Freeway (approaching the Ventura interchange). The car in tow breaks loose and flips over. Ponch apprehends the driver when he runs into a dead end. (Ponch mentions his sister for the first time here.) During the "CHiPs" vs "RAMS" basketball game, the "CHiPs" are down 6 points with 54 seconds left. Ponch manages to score the winning shot in the final second. There is much rejoicing. Feeling sorry for it, Jon has Baricza bring it to headquarters. Out on the highway, Ponch and Jon chase a guy on a motorcycle who has frozen up. After they stop him, he wanders off muttering how he never wants to ride it again. When leaving HQ, Ponch and Jon split up. Jon goes home but is followed by some guys in a dune buggy. They think it's Ponch and loosen one of the hubs on Jon's motor. The next day, they are caught following Ponch and Jon. After giving a ticket, Ponch and Jon chase down a speeding car with a heart attack victim. They help save him before an ambulance arrives. Later, Ponch, Jon, and Fritz are chasing some bank robbers when one of the dune buggy guys arrives at HQ. He tells Getraer what they did to the hub. Sarge warns Ponch but then realizes that they did it to Jon's motor instead. Jon manages to pull over but falls off the motorcycle as it comes to a stop. Luckily, he's not even bruised. Finally, the dog's owner shows up at CHP HQ looking for the dog. Ponch gets him out of a truck and the dog proceeds to relieve itself on Sarge's motorcycle. Laughter follows as the credits roll. Although, it does have the correct episode number. 104 - "Moving Violation" (10/13/77) Briefing: Drunk Driving Seminar and Church Bus is Stolen Again Plot: When a plane has to make an emergency landing on the freeway, Ponch and Jon hold back traffic. The plane lands just before a bridge and Ponch gets a date with the pilot. After a call comes in for a stolen bus, Jon spots it around the next corner. In order to get in good with Getraer, Ponch takes credit for finding the bus. At Central, Getraer is pleased with Ponch and gives him his snack. That night, Ponch is driving his date to dinner in his motor home when he changes lanes without signaling. He gets pulled over and takes the ticket. He doesn't flash his badge to get out of it either. Later, Ponch and Jon pull over a guy for speeding. He gets upset and starts ripping apart his car by hand. During lunch, Getraer calls Jon and asks him to do an accident call. After one of the most touching scenes of the whole series (and after a commercial), we see Ponch going to traffic school in disguise to get out of the ticket. The next day, Ponch and Jon chase after a van that clipped the door off of a fat guy's station wagon. The van flips over and the guy screams for help...because the van is filled with snakes! Baricza and Fritz show up and break the windshield while Ponch and Jon freeze the snakes with the CO2 fire extinguishers. After the bus is reported stolen again at the briefing, Fritz spots it. Ponch, Jon, and Fritz manage to pull over the old guy driving it. They make everyone get off. As the old guy explains why they stole the bus, it starts rolling. Ponch jumps on and tries to stop it but can't. He backs it down the hill while Jon clears the way. When he gets to a runaway vehicle median strip, he uses it to stop the bus. In the final scene, Ponch (in disguise) drags Jon (not in disguise) to traffic school. After a minute, the guy who pulled apart his car walks in. He recognizes Ponch and Jon walks out. Daddy!" at Jon is played by Derek Wilcox...no doubt some relation to Larry Wilcox. Oops: In the scenes before the theme, watch the skies. Sometimes they're foggy and sometimes they're clear. During lunch, Getraer calls Jon at the restaurant. I know officers have to call in that they're going to lunch...but not where. How does Getraer know what restaurant they're at? Do they always eat there on that day of the week? On the board during the briefing, under "Project V" it says "Car Officers Sign out for your cars". You mean they've just been running out and jumping into the first one there? I'd think they'd have assigned cars which means there's no need to sign out since you know who's in what car. On the runaway bus, there are three people...Ponch and the senior citizens. In some shots (especially while driving through the gravel just before the bus stops) you can see a fourth person. (Don't mistake the boxes in the last seat for a person though...) 105 - "Career Day" (10/20/77) Briefing: Getraer's slide show and a freeway burglar Plot: Ponch and Jon chase after a speeding hearse what dropped a coffin in the middle of the road. Baricza investigates the coffin and finds a fraternity member inside (alive). After the hearse gets severe tire damage, Ponch and Jon arrest the frat brothers inside. After the theme, Ponch makes his old high school principal, Mr. Singleton, pull over for driving the wrong way down a one way street. After the briefing, Ponch and Jon respond to a call about a freeway traffic jam, they find that everyone's gawking at models nearby. Jon can't convince the models to leave until he mentions jail. As they're about to leave, Baricza tells Ponch he got a 10-21. It turns out Mr. Singleton wants to see him to have him be a guest speaker on career day. Since Ponch's motorcycle needs repairs, Getraer sticks him at the front desk. When the helicopter pilot comes in, Ponch jumps at the chance to leave. In Helicopter 5, Ponch assists Jon on the ground. They find a lost boy and give him a helicopter ride home. Later, Ponch notices a stopped van and nobody claims to have tagged it. After the suspects drive off in it, Jon and Baricza chase it on the ground. They only manage to catch the van because of Ponch's observations. That afternoon, Ponch is called to the stage to give his career day speech. He freezes up and Jon runs on stage to help. Jon tells how Ponch saved a kids life and Ponch starts telling exaggerated stories without help. As the credits roll, Ponch tells stories and the audience looks at their watches. Either the helicopter has something wrong with it or the inside sound effect is looped over and over. 106 - "Baby Food" (10/27/77) Briefing: Ponch is making faces in the door Plot: Ponch and Jon see a baby food truck lose its load and then head back to Central to wait for a call. While everyone's in the briefing, Ponch makes faces in the door's window. When the briefing ends, they watch soaps on the TV in the briefing room. Getraer tells them to leave. On their way to Ponch's trailer, they encounter a car fire. Jon saves a dog and Ponch gets his uniform dirty. While Ponch plans to put on shorts and a "Keep On Truckin" shirt and visit his neighbor, he knocks the phone off the hook. Getraer trys to contact them to tell them that the baby food was contaminated with botulism but can't get through. Later, Ponch's neighbor hits on Jon. On the way back to Central, Ponch and Jon look for the missing baby food boxes. When they leave the Golden State Freeway, they find Mrs. Downey coming up the exit ramp. Ponch help her and turns her car around for her. While they ride to Central, they remember the school bus they saw along the road. An APB is sent out and Ponch, Jon, and Barclay are sent out to look for the bus. Ponch and Jon find it and can't get a helicopter to get the baby to a hospital. Because traffic is tied up, Jon carries the baby on his motor to a waiting Ghostbusters-like ambulance. The baby turns out to be fine. Ponch investigates the booth while Jon chases the thieves. They manage to give him the slip. After the afternoon briefing, Ponch and Jon respond to a call about an overturned onion truck. After lots of crying, Ponch has the truck move but gets covered in onions. When they return to Central, they find that Mrs. Downey is there complaining about a $2 parking ticket. Back on patrol, Ponch and Jon chase a chauffeur who's driving like a maniac. The limo ends up causing a major accident. The chauffeur tells Ponch and Jon that there's a bomb in his limo so they break a window to get him out. Jon gets Baricza and Shain to take care of traffic while he calls for the bomb squad. The situation gets worse when they realize that there's a guy pinned against the guard-rail by the limo. Ponch talks to the pinned guy while the bomb squad defuses the bomb. That night, Ponch brings his TV to Jon's apartment for him to fix. Ponch soon discovers a bulletin board with "Ponch falls in Glue", "Ponch Loses Motorcycle", "Ponch Burns Hole in Pants", and "Ponch falls in the Mud" on index cards. Ponch goes nuts when he finds out Jon's writing a book about all Ponch's goof-ups. Soon Getraer appears on TV talking about the "Toll Booth Bandits". After the commercial, Ponch starts to like the book idea. While Ponch is thinking about fame, Jon notices a man in the diamond lane trying to pass off a dog as a passenger. When the trunk accidentally pops open, Jon notices lots of stolen appliances. They arrest the driver and his wife. When Getraer hears about Jon's book, he tells him how everything has to be cleared by all sorts of CHP officials...and filed in triplicate. The Toll Booth Bandits strike again but Baricza is on their tail followed by our heroes. The bandits try to jump a drawbridge but don't make it and flip over. Jon arrests them with Baricza, Ponch, and Fritz's help. Off duty, Jon decides to give up on the book but Ponch doesn't want him to. The last we see, Ponch is trying to stop Jon from throwing everything out. Guest Stars: R.B. When they arrest the drivers, they learn that there are "Green Thumb Burglars" stealing shrubs. Later they stop twins who drove through a stop sign. They claim to be famous psychics and predict trouble for Ponch. At Ponch's trailer, Ponch tries to get Jon lunch (tuna and beans) and Ponch cuts himself. Jon points out "Madam Butterball's" first prediction. At Central, Ponch has a run in with Getraer (making the second prediction come true). Getraer starts acting loopy when Jon mentions the plant thieves. After the briefing, Ponch and Jon help a stuck guy out of his car after an accident. When a truck leaves the site, it's leaking gas. The back catches fire when it runs over a flare. Ponch tells the woman to keep the truck moving. Jon arranges a rendezvous with a foam truck. Ponch guides the truck into the foam and evacuates the driver to safety. Jon reminds Ponch about the prediction of an encounter with fire. After visiting Central, Ponch notices something unusual driving a car. When they pull it over, H.R. Pufnstuf gets out. They make him walk (because his view was obstructed by the costume). A few yards away, "Cal-Trans" landscapers are leaving a work site. Ponch and Jon chase them. When Getraer hears about it, he heads out and they dump their trees on him. The CHP corners them in a Drive-In lot. (Later seen in "The Return of the Supercycle") Getraer arrests them. That night at Jon's apartment, Ponch learns that his date got engaged to a Sgt. After Ponch gets a cigaratte flicked on him, they find motorcycle riders fitting the description and pull them over. They realize they're the wrong people when they find out they're women. After the theme, Ponch and Jon head to court. Ponch presents his case against Mr. Engelhart, who crossed Ponch's flare line. Mr. Engelhart has a poor presentation and then asks for (and gets) a continuance to gather more evidence. Out on the highway, Ponch is complaining when he notices a car fail to stop at a stop sign. When they pull the car over, Ponch is excited about meeting Broderick Crawford. The "CHiPs" Season 2 Episode Guide The "CHiPs" Episode Guide - 1978-79 201 - "Peaks and Valleys" (09/16/78) Plot: A couple try to switch seats while driving and get stuck. Ponch and Jon pull them over. A camper driver gets distracted by them and drives off the road. When the paramedics arrive, one of them accuses Ponch and Jon of moving a spinal victim. Later, they pull over a high school buddy of Jon who tries to talk him into selling cars. When they return to Central, they meet "Dave" the dog and his owner Harlan (the new mechanic). Grossie tells them that the dog was on dope patrol at the border. As Ponch and Jon go back on patrol, Harlan tells Getraer that he would be a CHP officer if he was 2 inches taller. At the hospital, the spinal victim identifies Ponch and Jon as the ones that pulled him from the camper. Later, Ponch and Jon chase a truck with a trailer fire. They pull the driver just before the truck explodes. Off duty, they visit the used car lot and consider working there. The next morning, Ponch helps Jon tell high school students about the California Highway Patrol. While Jon gives a ticket, Ponch and Baricza respond to an anonymous call of bikers near the reservoir. When Baricza leaves his cruiser to look for the bikers, two guys shoot up his cruiser. Ponch calls in "shots fired" and Jon responds. As the guys walk away, Baricza draws his weapon on them. Ponch and Baricza are arresting them when Jon arrives. Later, Ponch introduces Jon to a woman who asks him to a disco. Then they visit the spinal victim, Bob Niles, in the hospital. He remembers that it wasn't Ponch and Jon that moved him...but power line guys! That night, Ponch and Jon show off their disco techniques with the ladies. When they take a break from the dance floor, a pregnant woman is about to give birth. Ponch takes control while Jon assists. In the world's easiest delivery, she gives birth to a boy. Ponch and Jon enjoy the applause when the DJ announces that they're CHP officers. It crashes at a chemical storage facility and explodes. Getraer needs volunteers to escort the trucks to the nearest cholorine gas facility. They feel it's too dangerous to store it there. Turner, Ponch, and Jon are on escort duty. Meanwhile, some drunk guys are shooting a gun out of a truck. They pass the truck convoy but manage to cause a major accident up the road. Ponch, Jon, and Turner have to deal with a loose criminal and tiger. They find the criminal (who's just a drunk) and catch the tiger in a convenience store. Instead of waiting, they decide to take the alternate route. They're stopped by a mob of people who don't want the trucks going through their town. After sweet talking the local townsfolk, they drive through town. They have to stop when the road is blocked due to a landslide. Ponch, Jon, and Turner shovel the dirt and rocks away. While Robbie tries to fix her truck, a rock accidentally breaks a valve. While shutting it off, she starts to suffocate. Some hikers tell Ponch that there's oxygen nearby. He rides off on the trail to get it while Jon moves a large rock out of the road with Turner's cruiser. One of the hikers, Robbie, Turner, and the oxygen head towards the hospital. Ponch leaves his motor (with a flat tire) and a hiker behind. Jon drives one of the trucks to replace Robbie. When Jon hits a rock, his trailer comes loose. He can't stop or the trailer might fall off. Ponch sees that the trailer is coming loose. Ponch has to get onboard to fix it. He rides ahead, parks, and jumps on Jon's truck. When Charlie pushes the trailer back on, Ponch locks it in place. Ponch gets a ride back to Jon's motor with a woman. The next day, Ponch arranges a date with Robbie using his secret code and the credits roll. Wouldn't it be logical to take the shortest route away from the explosives? They go closer and right in front of the burning car. When the car explosion is filmed in the episode's opening scenes, they must have filmed two different explosions. In the first camera angle we see, there's a sign on the building and smoke marks above the sign. In the second, there are flames coming out of the building from where the sign was. Back to the first, the building looks the same. Back to the second, the sign is gone, it's now a window, and there's smoke above the window (probably caused by the flames shooting out in the second shot.) After the commercial, the whole building is gone. Jon's driving the first truck. When Charlie pushes Jon's trailer back on, there's no third truck (the one with the bigger grill). After it's back on, the third truck is back. 203 - "Family Crisis" (09/30/78) 3 Briefings: Auto theft is overworked & movie prop car is stolen / Movie car performing robberies / Go catch the movie car thieves Plot: While directing traffic, Jon sees his nephew. Shortly later, they see someone stealing a motorcycle and chase him. Sindy joins in but is arrested by an LAPD officer who thinks she's an accomplice. Ponch and Jon free her. After the briefing, Ponch sells his motor home. After lunch with Fritz and Grossie, Jon's nephew and his friends steal another car. Later that day, Jon drives his truck to Ponch's new apartment near the marina but finds that the waterbed in the apartment upstairs flooded his. When he moves into the temporary (more expensive) apartment and sees the woman upstairs, he decides to move in there. Later, Ponch, Jon, and Wes go to dinner with some other CHP officers. The next day, Wes & friends abandon a stolen car. Ponch and Jon are checking it out when they get a call about the movie car and head towards it. Sindy gives up her chase after skidding on the oil and the car gets away. Ponch brings Wes's bus pass to him and tells him he knows he's involved in the car thefts but that Jon doesn't. He promises not to tell if Wes stops riding in stolen cars. Later, Sindy gets called in by the Captain about her report on the movie car thieves. Meanwhile, Wes is out on an unopen section of the 210 freeway racing cars when Grossie spots them. Ponch and Jon join in as they leave the freeway. When they finally catch them, Jon arrests Wes. Wes gets off with a misdemeanor. Out on the streets, Ponch spots a familiar trash rig and they decide to stake it out. The movie car pulls off another robbery and the CHP was ready. After a chasing the car while it uses smoke screen and other movie devices, they trap it on a pier and the thieves eject and land in the water. At Ponch's house warming party, we find out that Sindy got a commendation. Gordon and James Doherty Directed by: Phil Bondelli 204 - "Disaster Squad" (10/07/78) Briefing: Courtesy Plot: While Ponch, Jon, and Grossie check out women on the freeway, an old guy is driving recklessly in a truck. As Jon tries to calm the guy down, the channel 3 news crew (aka "The Disaster Squad") shows up and provokes the guy. He climbs onto an overpass and the news crew try to get the guy to jump. Ponch accidentally knocks the guy over. After helping him up, he says, "It's a crime to assist a suicide, creep. Now you keep your mouth shut or I'll have you in the slammer." When the boss shows up, they make up and everything turns out fine. Back at the Central garage, Ponch and Jon meet a lost kid named Chris. After following him home while he rides in a cruiser, Chris shows him his mini-motorbike. While Ponch, Jon, and Chris's mom watch him ride it, Jon hits on Chris's divorced mom. After the briefing, Jon wants to date Ellen while Ponch rides with Chris. On the freeway, a driver is driving in reverse. It distracts another truck which causes an accident. While Jon writes the ticket, the "Disaster Squad" reporter kicks a flare into a gas puddle and causes an explosion. Back in business, Ponch and Jon are pulled over by Sindy. Chris is in her backseat. Ponch and Jon bring him home. While Ponch rides with Chris, Jon hits on Ellen again. Ponch suggests that Chris enter a race. Soon we see Chris in a pee-wee dirt-bike race. Just before he's about to win, "Bobby" knocks him over. Chris is mad and wants to punch him. Ponch tells him it's not nice to punch people. Meanwhile, Chris is home watching the news. He sees Regis Philbin's fake report on Ponch saying "I'll slam you in the mouth creep" and runs away. The report was really forged by fancy editing. Sindy finds Chris near the flood control channels. He rides his motorbike too close and falls in. Ponch and Jon try to rescue him, but can't reach. When Ponch tries again, he falls in. Jon tries again in another minute by throwing them a hose. They're all pulled to safety as the TV crew covers it. The reporter wants it to seem bad, but his crew turns the tables and makes him confess as to how he faked everything. At the motorcross track, Ponch makes Chris swear never to ride alone. While they ride together, Ellen tells Jon that her ex-husband asked her to marry him again...but she doesn't want to marry him. Jon knows that she really loves him. Related Episode: See Ellen and Chris Roberts in "Tow Truck Lady". 205 - "Neighborhood Watch" (10/14/78) Briefings: Counter the neighborhood speeders by doing a neighborhood watch / Keep your breaks to 10 minutes Plot: After Ponch tries to get Dodgers tickets, they find Oliver on a skateboard carrying a surfboard. He's almost run down by a speeder. Ponch lectures him and lets him ride off in the Brady-esque station wagon. After the theme, Jon pulls over the speeder (Mr. Billings) and gives him a lecture for shaving while speeding. After Mr. Billings is allowed to go, the Brady wagon speeds around a corner and Ponch and Jon chase it. It turns out that kids are driving it and can't stop. Ponch gets them to stop by turning off the ignition. After the kids' parents pick them up, it's briefing time. Out on the streets, Ponch and Jon find a mon who refuses to let a tow truck driver tow his car...so he burns it. Ponch buys it (using some of Jon's money) for $83. As Jon steps into the street, he's almost killed as Billings speeds by. Jon chases him and pulls him over. Jon arrests him for drunk driving. Later, Ponch and Jon catch the kids fooling around and save the girl with the cast when the shopping cart she's in rolls away. After visiting Central, Ponch and Jon get pinned down by a toy plane. The next day, after the briefing, our heroes encounter those meddling kids again. They accidentally knock over a lady's groceries and the owner of the store gets upset with them. Ponch gets an idea to keep them out of trouble. They have Sindy pick the kids up and go to a skateboard park. Ponch and Jon show up in Jon's truck to show the kids "how it's done." The next day is the "last day of neighborhood watch." Billings is speeding again...while drinking. After he hits someone at about 35 mph, he abandons his car and runs home. Ponch and Jon respond to the hit-and-run call. While Ponch tends to the injured jogger, Jon goes to find Billings. Jon knows that Billings is trying to get home to report his car stolen. Jon has to beat him there...and he does. When Billings sees him, he runs. (He looks goofy while running in the alley.) Jon arrests him when he gets to a cliff and can't run anymore. They chase a speeding van that was carrying 13 black cats. When it stops, they all ran away in front of Ponch. Before the briefing, Ponch walks under a ladder. Grossie shows up with a jack-o-lantern that's supposed to look like Getraer. After Ponch nicks himself with his electric razor, closes his locker door, and breaks his mirror. After the briefing, Getraer tells Grossie to get a candle for the jack-o-lantern...he has one in his locker. (Do we want to know why?) On the streets, a kid asks Ponch for a treat, but Ponch gets a trick from a perfume filled squirt gun. Ponch threatens toput handcuffs on him. When they pass by a house later on, two men are taking up sod. Ponch and Jon chase and catch them. Later, while Ponch stops at a store to fill his saddlebag with candy, an angry father blames Ponch for making his kid run away when Ponch told him he'd put handcuffs on him. After a hobgoblin broadcast, Ponch and Jon find two women trying to steal a street sign. They convince them to forget about the scavenget hunt and get invited to a party. That night, a woman dressed as a ghost robs a deli and Ponch and Jon chase her. Ponch has to tend to a ghost caused accident and she gets away. Ponch and Jon find a kid who had his candy stolen and Ponch offers them some of his. Later, Ponch and Jon check out the local "haunted" house for the missing kid. After a while, they find him in the kitchen. After a third hobgoblin broadcast, Jon notices a woman stealing candy. They chase her to her house where they find out she's just looking for her engagement ring. Jon finds it in her own candy bowl. Back on the streets, Ponch and Jon chase the ghost again. They catch them when their windshield is egged. At the party, Getraer reveals that he knew everything that was going on because Grossie left an impression on the page under the one he wrote his plans on. Our heroes chase their blue van. They lose it in a nearby neighborhood. Later, Ponch takes Jon's neighbor shopping while Jon repairs Ponch's car with the help of a girl who has a crush on him. The next day, Ponch pretends to have a cold so he doesn't have to go up in the helicopter. Grossman goes up instead. Soon, Ponch and Jon respond to a call about car strippers. The strippers, now in a tan van, drive down an alley and throw tires at Ponch and Jon. Ponch hits one and falls over in garbage. That night, Jon's neighbor has a fight with her daughter, Kim. Kim visits Jon at 1am. The next day, Ponch fakes an earache but finds out that the flight was cancelled anyway because of weather. Remember that van? It's now blue and white and still stripping cars in broad daylight. Ponch and Jon chase it until it rolls over and catches fire. So much for the new paint job. Back at Jon's apartment, Kim is waiting for him. Jon and Ponch go talk to Kim's mom. Later, Ponch and Jon pull over a van with 20 L.A. Rams cheerleaders in it. Jon makes 8 wait for a cruiser. While Jon directs traffic, Ponch hangs out with the cheerleaders. While Ponch is at Central, asking Sindy out on a date, Jon greeted at his apartment by Kim. Sindy and Ponch show up at Jon's shortly and Sindy pretends to be Jon's girlfriend. Jon is shocked and Kim gets depressed. After talking to Kim, everything turns out fine. The next day, Ponch has no ailments and goes up in the helicopter. Ponch reveals he's terrified of crashing. Ponch and Bob in Helicopter 5 notice a brown van (didn't it burn?) near a Mercedes. Jon goes after the van on the ground. He arrests the bald buy after he tries to run. Meanwhile, Ponch and Bob chase the Mercedes. The guy runs away and Ponch gets out and nabs him. Back at Central, Ponch and Bob are headed out to the airport for Ponch's flying lesson. As Ponch leaves, he notices that there are four L.A. Rams cheerleaders there. It's entirely possible that their apartments have the same design. Not only do they have the same floor plan and appliances but the wallpaper, orange paper towels, potholder (near the paper towels), and microwave oven are all the same...and in the same spots. There's also a white cylinder that's on Jon's stove but is near Kim's sink. The CHP gets to ride in a helicopter in this episode. So why don't we see it on the Helicopter pad at Central in the overhead shots? (Stock footage yet again...) 208 - "The Grudge" (11/11/78) Briefings: Assignments for the CHP open house / Commendations for the open house Plot: Driving home, some Alpha Alpha Omega fraternity brothers are headed towards a tunnel in their motor home. Jon notices they're over the height limit and our heroes chase after them. The motor home scrapes some scaffolding and stops just at the entrance to the tunnel. Somehow, the motor home catches on fire. Jon saves a trapped frat brother while Ponch puts out the fire and finds quite a bit of pot. After the trial of the frat brothers, Ponch and Jon return to Central for the briefing. Meanwhile, the frat brothers scheme revenge on the CHP. Later, Ponch and Jon run across an abandoned VW Beetle in the middle of the road with a letter addressed to Ponch in it. Later, Ponch gets more letters based on nursery rhymes. Everyone's confused by them. On patrol, the frat brothers pass Ponch and Jon. When our favorite officers chase them, the frat brothers start dumping play money on the freeway. It causes an accident and everyone jumps out to grab some cash. After stopping by Central, Ponch and Jon return to the streets and find the convertible that dumped the cash. They chase it to Travel Town where the two frat brothers try to hide in trains. Ponch and Jon find them and go visit them and their other frat brothers when off duty. While the CHP sets up for the open house, the frat brothers have girls from Gamma Delta Phi making brownies. Back at the open house, everything is going fine and the CHP motorcycle drill team performs. During the performance, Jon somehow figures out the riddle and tells Ponch. They catch the frat brothers and destroy a few open house booths in the process. The next morning, Getraer reads a commendation for Baker but gives a damage bill to Ponch. Ponch agrees to give Jon a quarter every time he does. Ponch and Jon pull over a speeder who gives Ponch a sore chin and claims that he has diplomatic immunity. Out on the highway, Ponch and Jon find an accident caused by spilled nails in the road. After hanging around, they chase the speeding sheik again. When they check his registration, they find it expired a year ago and impound the car. When the sheik invites them to a party, Ponch and Jon show off their jet-skiing ability. On deck of the boat, Ponch enjoys caviar and cold beer while Jon speaks "lousy French" to some "foxy ladies". The sheik then tries to bribe Ponch and Jon. They're about to leave when they see a boating accident and chase after the runaway boat with jet-skis. Jon saves the unconsious captain while Ponch steers the boat away from the sheik's yacht. After jumping overboard, the boat explodes. Later, Ponch shows off his new apartment (without any furniture) to the sheik's cousin. The next day, Ponch and Jon take sheik Barney out in a cruiser to a junk yard where they show him wrecked cars. Later, they arrive at an accident scene where Ponch has Barney hold an I.V.. After the briefing, Ponch and Jon find that the sheik was giving them each a new Mercedes. They give them back and take a handshake. Later, Ponch and Jon pull over Barney's Ferarri again...with his cousin at the wheel. She was speeding all over their beat to find them...and got tickets from the whole CHP. She had to leave the country and wanted to say goodbye. Then they respond to a call of an officer down and find he limped off. After the theme, Ponch and Jon stop a van and find out the driver is one of Ponch's high school buddies. Later, two of Ponch's buddies are out on the highway ram 22 cars and lose control. When Ponch and Jon chase them, they refuse to stop. They manage to lose Ponch and Jon so they park the car, take the plates off, and run. While Ponch and Jon are at lunch, Jon talks about his previous partner Gary who died chasing a speeding car. Gary's brother Pete works at the place where they were eating. Back at central, Sarge withdraws Ponch's commendable incident report when he finds out that not all of the citations were Ponch's...some were faked. The next day, one of Ponch's friends (Rudy) decides to try to ram more than 22 cars. He ends up causing an ambulance carrying a girl in an iron lung to overturn. As our heroes arrive, the fake CHP leaves. Ponch pumps the lung in the ambulance while Jon tries to keep pipes from crushing the ambulance. The pipes are finally lifted and the girl is transferred to an upright ambulance. Later Ponch responds to a stalled vehicle, and Jon watches the fake CHP. Back at central, Jon figures out that Pete got ahold of one of Ponch's citations to copy and that he has been acting as a CHP. Jon follows him the next day in his truck...speeding past him on the highway and getting pulled over. Pete explains that he thinks its his fault that his 28-year old brother Gary is dead. Jon arrests Pete and tells him to turn himself in the next day. Later, Ponch and Jon chase after Rudy when he's out playing bumper cars on the freeway. They find him hiding in a junkyard. To keep him from escaping, Jon almost kills him with a forklift. The next day, Ponch and Jon find out that Pete turned himself in and will probably just end up on probation. They also help the girl in the iron lung celebrate her birthday. Ponch and Jon assist with the accident. The ambulance driver speeds with the concussion victim off like a nut while Ponch and Jon investigate the scene of the crime. Later, the kid calls the hospital asking about the woman's contition. He's obviously upset about the whole thing. When Ponch and Jon arrive at Valley General Hospital to do their follow-up, they end up chasing a speeder. When they pull it over, we learn it's the ambulance driver. Before the briefing, everyone's entering a lottery about how long it will take Jon to rope a steer. When the kid goes back to get his gun, Sindy spots him and calls Ponch and Jon. He brings the gun to his friend, the gun dealer. When he leaves the store, Ponch chases him on foot. Jon cuts him off and catches him. After talking things over at Central, Jon and Ponch take him out to a ranch to ride. Jon shows off and then lets the kid ride. Meanwhile, the ambulance driver is fired from his job. When he leaves the hospital, he tells his wife that he still has his job. Later, Jon and Ponch introduce the kid to the un-injured accident victim. She begins to like him. Later, Ponch and Jon chase the ex-ambulance driver in a stolen ambulance full of dynamite. The ambulance stops in a playground and kids start picking up the dynamite while Ponch and Jon chase the driver. After they catch the driver, all three of them run to the dynamite and convince the kids to hand it over. At the end, everyone's enjoying Jon in the mini-rodeo. Is it me or are the kids playing with the dynamite just plain stupid? 213 - "Down Time" (12/16/78) Briefing: Plot: Ponch's Firebird is stolen by an unlikely group of thieves. Mittleman Directed by: John Florea 215 - "Mait Team" (01/13/79) Briefing: How the accident happened (drawn on chalkboard) Plot: Sindy is involved in a major accident and Ponch and Jon respond. Our heroes arrive at the same time as the emergency vehicles. It isn't until later that someone notices Sindy's cruiser. Eleven people died. Luckily Sindy's alive but unconsious. She was the only survivor and witness. Ponch and Jon become part of the MAIT team to investigate the accident. Several witnesses claim to have heard a siren just before the crash. The next day, pictures and measurements are taken at the scene of the accident. Everything seems to be pointing to Sindy as the cause. Trouble arises when a Senator joins the investigation. While Ponch and Jon do a (safe) re-creation for the Senator, Getraer is following up clues and ends up chasing a truck which lost a part at the scene of the accident. When Getraer slips and tips over, Ponch and Jon take up the chase. When they catch the guy, Ponch makes the arrest. It turns out he ran because he thought they were getting him for excess parking tickets. When Sindy regains consiousness, she remembers nothing. Ponch suggests they recreate the accident. The next day, they have a truck and multiple old cars to play with. On their second run through, they get it almost exact. When Ponch and Jon get blinded by the reflection of the sun, Ponch realizes why the truck drove on the wrong side. They recreate it once again with the reflective sheets on top of the hill which were being delivered at the time of the accident. Jon is blinded and drives on the wrong side. The accident almost happens again. When Ponch and Jon visit Sindy in the hospital, they bring her an 8-track player. When Ponch realizes he forgot the batteries, he runs out to get some. Great Line: "Didn't you guys have any witnesses?" Even the slightest deviation would have made it reflect at something other than Jon's truck 216 - "Pressure Point" (01/20/79) Briefing: Plot: After a guy on a motorbike (with the help of some cars) breaks the window of a man's limo, his chauffer speeds after them. Ponch and Jon chase after the speeders as the theme begins. Ponch and Jon pull over the limo and the passenger (Mr. Forbinger) claims the broken glass was an accident. When Ponch and Jon meet up with Sindy, they find broken glass and figure out what happened. Because Mr. Forbinger's granddaughter is threatened, he hires security for her. At a Mexican restaurant, Ponch and Jon try to get the answers from Mr. Forbinger. Even though Jon figures out the plot, he doesn't know it and they get nowhere. Because Mr. Forbinger's an "important" man, Ponch and Jon are assigned to protective services detail. On the streets, the car/motorcycle group tries to corner a truck but Baricza shows up to stop them. When the cars drive off, the truck driver has a heart attack and drives off a cliff. Baricza, Ponch, and Jon go to the man's rescue. Later, Ponch and Jon show up at Forbinger's house. Ponch is posing as a diplomat and Jon as his driver. Soon, Ponch and the granddaughter go for a ride to see who follows them. They pass Grossie and he follows them. Shortly, Grossie pulls over the guy following them for making an unsafe lane change. Ponch returns to Forbinger's house with Sindy posing as the granddaughter. Later, Ponch, Jon, Sindy, and Forbinger head out on the road. It's not long until the cars and motorcycle try to corner them. Jon manages to escape their formation and drives the limo wildly. The CHP shows up and it all comes to an end. Jon apologizes for the rough ride and Mr. Forbinger says he loved it! In the final scene, everyone's glad it's over. When Grossie tries to pull over the guy following Ponch, he's almost on the guy's back bumper! 217 - "The Matchmakers" (01/27/79) Briefings: Welcome & Goodbye Derk Hutchins (a 30 year CHP motor officer) / Reminder on Secret Service seminar Plot: Ponch and Jon chase a woman (Cora) driving her truck recklessly. She ends up driving into a pond and Ponch wades in after her. It turns out she was attempting suicide. Ponch, Jon, and Sindy go to the Cora's house to drop her off later. After the briefing, Ponch and Jon respond to an accident. Some loose scrap cars could fall on an occupied car but Derk manages to tie down the load. On the freeway, Ponch and Jon are chasing a car which is chasing another car when Derk joins in. Derk pulls them over and the man in the first car turns out to be a P.I. who was taking the mother's daughter to the father. After their shift, Ponch and Jon ride out to Derk's place to check out his motorcycle collection. Meanwhile, Animal Control goes to Cora's house to take her animals. She can't take it and tries to drive off a cliff...but stops just in time. Just up the road, she swerves to avoid an oncoming car and flips over. The truck slides to the edge of the cliff. Luckily, Derk lives nearby so Ponch, Jon, and Derk ride up on some old motrocycles to save her. Just as Jon saves her, the truck falls over. At the hospital, Ponch and Jon convince Derk to take in Cora's animals. After the second briefing, Cora asks Derk out to dinner. Across town, the P.I. kidnaps the girl again. Ponch and Jon respond covering the 405 northbound. Sindy follows him on the freeway but loses him when he pulls off. Ponch, Jon, and Sindy split up, but Dirk (aka Mary 9) finds him headed for the airport. When he arrives, his plane is ready and waiting. Dirk chases the plane followed by Ponch, Getraer, and Sindy. Ponch sticks his stick in the elevator of the plane so they can't take off. They manage to stop the plane and everything is fine. That night, Cora moves her animals into Dirk's garage and Ponch and Jon help. After the robbers get away, they remove the flame decals from their sports car and head off to a rally. Meanwhile, Ponch calls Sarge and finds out that his mom is coming! He immediately calls up a furniture rental company and has furniture delivered to his empty apartment. He and Jon arrive at the airport late and park in a no parking zone. After meeting his mom, Ponch brings his mom to his newly decorated apartment. The next day, Ponch and Jon have lunch with Getraer and then some rally drivers. They head out and, assisted by Sindy, attempt to catch the bank robbers again. After losing the robbers, they go check out the rally checkpoint for the robbers. Later, Ponch and his mother discuss old times. She makes him feel guilty about moving away. Back at Central, Ponch and Jon get lectured by Getraer about being "given the slip" by "those jokers". Meanwhile, the robbers pull off another bank job. Ponch and Jon lose them after they sneak under another low clearance. That night, Ponch brings his girlfriend to a disco square-dance. (It can't be described in words.) Getraer isn't into it, but Grossie and Ponch's mom watch on. When Ponch tells his mom how the robbers are using the rally as a cover, she suggests staking out banks along the next day's route. When they do so, Ponch, Jon, and Getraer all end up chasing the robbers after Sindy tends to an accident. Ponch and Jon chase them through the flood control channel while Getraer goes around to cut them off. They round the robbers into a side tunnel where the passage gets to narrow and the sports car gets stuck. At the briefing, Ponch gets a safety citation for a year without any accident. They celebrate with a cake Mrs. Poncherello and Grossie made. Ponch says goodbye to his mom in his apartment parking lot just before she gets a ride to the airport in Sindy's cruiser. As Ponch is about to leave, he crashes into the cruiser. Everyone laughs. They're making slow progress or going in circles. When they stake out the bank parking lot nobody bother's to block the exit to the street? I guess that would have made for a short chase. The flood control channel is straight. It tends to reason that the robbers were driving as fast as possible through it. So how did Getraer manage to go around and end up in front of them...twice? Why is everyone saying goodbye to Ponch's mom in the parking lot? They're probably all going to the airport. 219 - "Bio-Rhythms" (02/17/79) Briefing: Sindy talks on biorhythms Plot: Two trucks are side-swiping each other on the highway. Jon chases the truck that started it but finds it parked and empty. Large scale trucking conglomerate tries to put a friend of Ponch and Jon's out of business. At the pier, a kid observes someone steal a wallet and gets the idea of stealing some change from a woman on a pay phone. He escapes by grabbing onto a bumper of a station wagon. Jon and Getraer find the kid on the freeway and manage to stop the car after the theme. Ponch and Jon go and talk to Mark (the kid's) older sister. Ponch learns that Mark's sister teaches some celebrities how to roller skate so Ponch talks her into getting some for the CHP roller disco. Later, two guys cause an accident when they lower the rear end of their car and create sparks. Following up on the accident, Ponch and Jon visit Jimmy Tyler in the hospital. He's a "big rock star" and Ponch has all his records. Ponch convinces his agent, Frank Balford, to help get some celebrities for the CHP roller disco. Later, the wallet thieves steal a belt pouch. When Ponch and Jon come to the rescue, they get knocked on their backs and the thieves escape on skates. After the briefing, Ponch is near the Beverly Hills Hotel looking at a map to the homes of the stars. A friendly man helps him and announces Jon's arrival with his famous "Heeeere's Johnny!" Ed McMahon drives off as Ponch realizes who he is. Meanwhile, Jimmy gets upset with his agent and fires him. After he goes out driving because he's so upset, Ponch and Jon come across Grossie (who found Jimmy crying on the side of the freeway). Jon lets Jimmy stay at his apartment. Within a minute, Jimmy falls asleep. That afternoon, the roller skating thieves are at it again. They rob a jewelery store as Mark watches. Ponch and Jon each chase the skating men while the woman gets away. As one heads to the beach, we see "To Be Continued"! After the bouncing tailgaters create their first accident, you can spot the jump ramps from the jumping cars. After Jimmy fires his agent, he calls someone and tells them to bring his Ferrari to the hospital parking lot. He then says instructs them to "leave the keys over the visor." If you had a Ferrari, would you do something as stupid as that? Luckily nobody stole the Ferrari...but they messed with the odometer! After the commercial, the lower mileage guage is at 861, then 861, then 862, and in the final shot we see it change from 861 to 862. (You need a good freeze-frame to see this "Oops"!) Related Episode: See Part II in #302. 302 - "Roller Disco" Part II (09/22/79) Continued Plot: Starting with a bit of a re-cap, we continue from where Part I left off. Jon loses the skater he was chasing. Meanwhile, Ponch is still looking for his but can't find him. Luckily Ponch comes up with a plan just before the theme. After riding the carousel, Ponch and Jon ask their roller disco teaching friends to show them the neighborhood. After walking their dates home, Ponch and Jon go to the roller disco rehersal. The next day, Jimmy is managing his hectic life in Jon's apartment with the stereo turned up. Out on the freeway, the anti-tailgaters are still at it and causing accidents. Our heroes find them and chase them. Ponch and Jon make the arrest after the anti-tailgaters back into a telephone pole. Back at Jon's apartment, Jimmy is making lots of noise and making calls to London. Jon has a talk with him while Ponch has a talk with Balford, Jimmy's agent. The next day, the roller skatign thieves rob a bank. Ponch and Jon respond and are helped by Bonnie and Mark, the kid who held onto the car bumper. Bonnie arrests the woman while Ponch arrests the man in the white shirt and Jon and Mark get the guy in the black shirt. Brace yourselves, it's time to Skate with the Stars! It can't be summarized in words. Just when you thought it couldn't get worse, there's the "First-Ever Roller Disco Beauty Contest". That's followed up by a live performance of "Give In" given by Jimmy Tyler. The episode ends with Jimmy and Balford getting back together. (09/29/79) Briefing: (In a restaurant parking lot) Stolen radios Plot: Some surfer guys park really close to a "Valley" van, so the Valley guys push the surfer car out of the way. Upset, the surfers chase the van and attract the attention of our favorite motor officers. The Valley van manages to escape. Later on, a speeder forces a convertible towing two Hobie Cats down a road...but the breaks are out and it's up to Ponch to stop them while Jon chases the speeder. Fortunately they make it down the hill safely and come to a stop where Ponch manages to get a sailing date with the two women. Meanwhile, the surfers vandalize the Valley van and end up chasing each other. Grossman, Ponch, and Jon give chase followed by Baricza and Bonnie. Shortly, the van crashes into an open car door and stops. After returning to the beach, Ponch and Jon decide to check out ice cream trucks for stolen radios. Meanwhile, the 8-track in the Valley van is stolen and they think it's the surfers so they retaliate by taking their surfboards. When the surfers chase the Valley kids, they make a girl lose control of their kite. The kite falls on a car which causes an accident. The next day, on their day off (watch for the melted ice cream on Ponch's leg), Ponch and Jon try to make peace between the surfers and Valley people. Just down the beach are Ponch's sailing dates...both Hobie Cats flip. After Jon gets back to his truck, he finds his CB gone. The following day, the surfers chase the Valley van again...ending in roll overs. By the time Ponch and Jon arrive, everyone is next to the surfer car licking their wounds. Later, Ponch and Jon notice a suspicious trash collector entering a motor home. After a short chase, Ponch and Jon arrest the two men. Back at the beach, everyone is getting along fine and Ponch and Jon decide to go sailing again. Ponch falls in the water while pulling the boat off the beach. Chapman] Plot: While Ponch and Jon resolve a confrontation at a gas station, Grossie and Getraer come across an accident caused by an oil truck. The unsuspecting oil truck drivers think Getraer is after them because they stole the oil. They let out the oil on the highway and Getraer skids on it and falls over in the flaming oil. After the theme, Ponch and Jon find Grossie near Getraer's burned motorcycle. Getraer is put in an ambulance and taken to the hospital. Just after Grossie describes the NET-OIL truck, we see the thieves removing the sign from it. After visiting Getraer in the hospital, Ponch and Jon chase a car that stole a gas station's gas. Turning a corner, Jon flies off his motorcycle. Luckily he's fine and Ponch catches the driver of the car. That night, Ponch dates a girl who works at a gas station and finds out when the line starts to form. Across town, the thieves are sucking up gas when the station owner arrives. They drive off trailing gas behind. The next day, Ponch and Jon are out looking for a gas truck with a missing mud guard. When they pull over for a rest, they see a car that's swerving and hitting other cars. They get the driver out when he drives up a hill. He was transporting gas inside with him and got woosy. Just as they get him out, the car explodes. After the briefing, Ponch is the referee for a roller hockey match between Central and West L.A. CHP sponsored kids. Ponch calls high-sticking on Central and they lose 4 to 5. After Ponch and Jon fuel up in the early morning, they go on patrol and then return to Central to do reports. Meanwhile, the gas suckers are at it again. Sindy is staking out the suspicious gas station and calls in Ponch and Jon to catch the truck while she handles the station. Ponch and Jon chase the truck and it ends up crashing into a newly painted house and explodes in one of "CHiPs"'s greatest explosions. After putting the thieves away, it's the Central CHP vs the West CHP officers in roller hockey. We never find out who won, but the last we see, Central is ahead 3 to 2. Oops: During the final tanker truck chase when the pipe is loose and gas is spilling all over the road, the gas can be seen in all the camera shots except for the ones where we see the view from the tanker. When the tanker crashes into the house, the tank doesn't explode...the house does. The truck most likely runs on diesel...which only burns under pressure. Therefore the truck cab couldn't have caused the explosion. The tank (with the leak of (most likely) unleaded gasoline) should have been what exploded. 305 - "Death Watch" (10/13/79) Briefing: Plot: The death of a fellow officer sets Ponch and Jon on the trail of a stunt driver who instigates accidents to pay back insurance companies. Swerving to avoid a trailer, Ponch gets knocked unconsious and ends up in the hospital (again). After watching a clip from last year's episode, Kathy Mulligan (a visiting CHP) hits on Jon...but his mind's on the supercycle. After the briefing, he heads out to see Roy Yarnell and uncovers nothing. The red bandit hits again after the commercial. Jon, Baricza, and Mulligan chase him. He escapes over a jump ramp. Since Jon's motor needs repairs, he wants to use the supercycle but Getraer refuses. Back on the streets, Getraer and Jon chase the red bandit into the L.A. Colosseum. He drives up the steps to the top and escapes. Upset, Joe lets Jon use the supercycle. While Jon visits Roy, we learn that it's really the mechanic who's been pulling off the robberies. Bonnie realizes that they're really plotting to steal a diamond to frame Roy. The CHP arrives just in time to scare off the red bandit. Jon chases him down and catches him thanks to the supercycke, After Kathy says her goodbyes, Jon visits Ponch. Ponch shows a film of Jon on a dirtbike with a hang-glider attached. Jon jumps a truck on it. Then Getraer pops out to take credit for filming it. It turns out that everyone's there laughing at Jon's stunt. Meanwhile, Ponch, Jon, Baricza, and Powell arrive in Palma Vista to replace some striking police officers. Baker heads the "A Watch" from 6:30am to 2pm. When Candi arrives in Paula Vista, she brings the girl to the police station where Ponch and Jon try to help. When Ponch and Jon say they can't watch after the girl and she'd be left in the police station, Candi takes her to the race track. Later, her parents are in town to watch after the girl. The next day, some guys in a dune buggy speed by the police station. Ponch and Jon chase them but can't find them when they hide under a loading dock. They didn't lose out though...Jon spotted the truck that they pulled over at the beginning of the show parked on the side of the road. Later, Candi's practicing racing as the girl watches. Ponch and Jon arrive with a woman who may know who the girl is and where she belongs. When the girl spots the woman, she runs onto the track. Candi swerves to avoid hitting her. Then...just at the last second, we see "To Be Continued"! Candi stops the car just in time and the girl runs off. They find her at her old, burned out house. The next morning, Candi visits the girl, Donna, at her foster home. She doesn't seem happy and gets punished after Candi leaves. Meanwhile, Ponch and Jon chase after the speeding dune buggy again. Ponch recognizes the route from part 1 and takes a short cut while Jon follows. They see them hide the dune buggy and then arrest them. At the track, Candi is qualifying. She makes it but decides to try for a better starting position and blows her engine. Back at the Palma Vista police station, Jon has to deal with the fathers of the kids he arrested. Later, Candi goes with the social worker to get Donna out of the horrible home. Meanwhile, Jon is about to give a ticket when he notices the car from the first scene of part 1. He follows it and returns to the station. The officers from Central try to convince the officers on strike to help but they refuse. That night, Candi calls her pit crew to tell them that her parents want to take care of Donna. When she gets to the track the next day, she learns that she's been replaced by someone else. The next day, while Jon's organizing a raid on the cooks with the crappy car, Candi is getting ready to race...her replacement joined another team. During the race, Candi and her ex-replacement save another racer before his crashed car explodes. Meanwhile, Ponch, Jon, and a group of other officers bust the crooks they've been watching. Back at the raceway, Ponch and Jon arrive. Candi is in third but quickly moves to second which is the position she finishes in. After she returns to her hotel, she says goodbye to Donna. After Donna leaves, so does Candi and Ponch is left with just Jon. Jon says they need a vacation...they decide to try Los Angeles. When one driver leaves the race, Jon peeks under his hood and takes a picture. Soon, Ponch has to end the race because of car trouble. When he meets up with Jon, we learn they're undercover. When they meet Sarge and Baricza, we learn they're looking for stolen cars. Getraer informs them they're now looking for drug smugglers. That night, they head over to "The Pit Stop" and order some beers. The next day, Ponch conducts repairs on the stock car while Jon gets coffee. That night, Ponch is out racing again and wins $100. The next day, Jon, Bonnie, Grossie, and Getraer all play handball. Later, one of the racer's car catches on fire during a race. As Ponch and Jon put it out, he's shouting "Let it burn!" That night, Jon's out racing. Later, at the bar, Ponch sweet talks a woman racer. When Jon shows up, he tells Ponch the car's transmission was stripped. Since they can't get another car, Ponch decides to enter the destruction derby. Soon, one of Ponch's ex-schoolmates recognizes Ponch and almost blows his cover. The next morning, Ponch, Jon, and Getraer discuss tactics while jogging. Later, Ponch and Jon head to the junkyard where a forklift is moving old cars. They find one of "Bones"'s old wrecks and some drugs inside. Back at the track, a driver with a broken arm offers them his old car to use in the destruction derby. When Jon gets called to the office to for a phone call, two guys stick a bomb in his truck. They also stick one behind the seat in Ponch and Jon's stock car. After the commercial break, Ponch heads out in the destruction derby. While cheering on Ponch, Jon notices a wire on the ground. He opens his truck's hood and defuses the bomb. After not finding one in Ponch's car, he heads out into the derby. When Ponch ses his car, he heads over to it. Then he climbs out of the stock car and into his own. Seconds later, the stock car blows up. Trying to catch the guy that tried to kill them, Jon flips Ponch's and totals it. In the end, Ponch decides it was worth it to save his life. After riding from the junkyard, Ponch and Jon dribe up in their own cars. When they were at the junkyard, they were both in Jon's truck. When Ponch's car was flipped, the top was almost entirely crushed. After the commercial, it's not as bad. 313 - "Second Chance" (12/01/79) Briefing: Burglaries in condos in Marina Del Ray Plot: A young thief steals some jewelry and rides off on his motorbike. Ponch and Jon chase him until he jumps off a pier after injuring a girl on a bicycle. After jumping off the pier, he's rescued by a boat. While visiting a children's hospital, Ponch is challenged to a wheelchair race...and loses. After the briefing, the CHP go to the fair. While giving some kids a ride in a sidecar, Jon notices the thief and tells Bear to chase him. The thief runs someone off the road so they stop to help. After they figure out that the thieves work at a restaurant, they setup a trap. The thief sees the nice car and decides to rob their condo...falling for the trap. He's chased by Turner, Ponch, and Jon...but is caught when he swims to the boat and Ponch is already there. As the show ends, Ponch loses another wheelchair race. Guest Stars: Derek Wilcox (as Young Patient) Written by: Frank and Ramona Chase Directed by: John Florea 314 - "Wheeling" (12/08/79) Plot: Artie, a handicapped driver, and his two friends are stopped for playing "It" on the highway. Meanwhile, cars are drag racing and hit a boy. His dad chases after them and is pulled over. While playing "bull fight" at a sidewalk mall, Artie loses control of his wheelchair and rolls down a hill. Luckily Ponch and Jon show up at the right time. Artie is later caught letting the air out of a car in a Handicap space. Meanwhile, the father thinks he sees the car of the guy that injured his son so he chases him. They are both pulled over and he presses charges against the man. After Ponch & Jon visit Artie & Co., the father and his son are seen fixing his mangled bike. Back at HQ, Ponch & Jon have to deal with "Mr. Saunders" (the father)...and tell him that the man he pulled over didn't do it. Artie and friends find the Mustang that injured the kid and pull a wire from the engine. When the guy comes out to his car, it won't start...and then the CHP shows up and he runs to the train station where he's captured. After taking "Brent" for a spin, Artie almost runs over the injured kid. Mr. Saunders chases them (of course) attracting Baricza's attention. Then the van rolls over while the car knocks down live power lines. Artie broke both arms while Mr. Saunders broke a leg. In the end, Mr. Saunders is seen pushing Artie's wheelchair. Fred Neale and John Huff Directed by: Barry Crane 315 - "Christmas Watch" (12/15/79) Briefing: No schedule changes unless Getraer approves it Plot: A church's bell is about to be hung just prior to Christmas but it is stolen. When the Reverend chases after the bell, he loses them. Luckily, Ponch and Jon are just around the corner. At Central, Getraer shows up with a Christmas tree. After the briefing, the bell thieves steal a station wagon which was for sale. Meanwhile, Grossie is instructing everyone how to decorate the tree. Ponch gets upset and leaves because he wants a "real family." As he leaves, three drunk guys pull into the CHP gas pumps. Nearly the entire CHP takes care of their car and then arrests them. When the woman who had her car stolen shows up, Jon realizes that she was called in by a fake officer and left her home unattended. He goes off to save her house. Meanwhile, at the house, the thieves took all the Christmas presents. After some holiday season music and CHP work, we join our heroes at the CHP Christmas party. The CHP gives Getraer training wheels and a bag of sand for grease spots. Moments later, Ponch's mom appears at the party. Ponch's concerned Mom asks him about his motorcycle accident (as to which episode she's referring, I'm not sure). Later, the thieves get in an accident, give the guy $1200, and drive off. Baricza calls it in and Ponch, Jon, and Bonnie respond. They all manage to box in the van. That night at the church, the CHP shows up with the bell in the middle of "Silent Night". Catching one, Jon gets dirt on his uniform. After the theme, Jon tells his story on the stand. According to Jon, their informant told them which warehouse was housing stripped cars. The CHP raids the warehouse. When Jon is about to reveal the evidence found in the warehouse, Jon refuses to name the informant and ends up in jail. Because the Attorney General can't be found to overturn the contempt citation, he sits in jail. Getraer argues for Jon's release with the judge and lawyers to no avail. After Jon got released at 5am, he returns to Central to find out that he and Ponch have to go to court again. On their way, they find a manure truck that's losing its load. A bag falls on Ponch and Jon and they head to court smelly. Ponch is called to the stand and sworn in. He also refuses to name the informant and is found in contempt. Jon is also found in contempt again when he's called again. Bonnie, Baricza, and Grossie head down to the LAPD to look through three months of parking tickets to try to prove that the defendant was there before. Baricza finds Grossie was parked at Malibu Beach when he called in sick. He then finds a ticket he's looking for. Then they have to look for more. The next day, Ponch and Jon are released and the judge apologizes. The informant tells Ponch and Jon where to look for their suspect. The next morning, they find him and arrest him after he rolls his car. (01/19/80) Briefing: FIll out reports and volunteers for EMT training Plot: While Ponch and Jon admire a couple hang-gliders, two kids cause a car to swerve. Ponch and Jon chase after the car as the theme begins. They catch the guy, who turns out to be a fireman, and give him a ticket for crossing the double line. After Ponch and Jon volunteer for EMT training at UCLA, they get assigned to the A-shift (6am!). The next day, they show up to class 10 minutes late. Their teacher is the same fireman they stopped the day before. The next day, Ponch and Jon share a hang-glider. They spot a car that caught on fire and fell down a cliff. They land on a ledge and aid the victim. They can't figure out how to get him up, so they get the victim on the hang-glider and fly him to the beach below. In the next EMT class, Ponch and Jon have to pull a "victim" up a hill three times. The next day, Ponch and Jon visit the fireman's house. While his family is happy to meet Ponch and Jon, the fireman is obviously upset with them. Feeling uncomfortable, Ponch and Jon make a break for the door. Days later, Ponch and Jon encounter an accident caused by an old guy who had a heart attack. Ponch and Jon use their EMT training to save him. The next day, Ponch and Jon encounter a stock car that fell off the side of the road. The driver is "banged up" and the car trapped some kids in a cave. Ponch gets one of the kids out while the fireman goes in for the other. When a big truck crosses the road above, the "club house" in the cave falls in on the fireman and second kid. Somehow, he ends up getting out because after the commercial, we see him in a wheelchair being pushed his son. He only has broken legs. ...oh, and the kid made it out of the cave ok too. After the commercials, he's in casts at his house. 318 - "Kidnap" (01/26/80) Plot: While Ponch, Jon, and a reporter are entertaining two essay winners at the courthouse, two criminals manage to escape. While the reporter puts a microphone on Ponch, the kids start his motor. Just before they're supposed to go into the courthouse, the kids check out a Rolls Royce. Pete and Ray hide in the Rolls. Shortly, the two escaped criminals steal the Rolls and don't notice the kids until after they drive off. Ponch and Jon follow the Rolls at a safe distance. At the courthouse, Getraer organizes his forces. The kids talk their kidnappers into stopping at a gas station. When they pull off the highway, Ponch and Jon start following another Rolls. They pull up close and realize it's the wrong one. As the Rolls drives out of the gas station, Bonnie shows up and follows them. Arriving at the gas station and talking to the attendant in Spanish, Ponch and Jon find a note with "405N" left behind by the kids. Ponch gets a bright idea to borrow a car for $40 from the gas station and use it to persue undercover. As some guys in a van drive by the limo, they realize there's a kidnapping going on. When they cause a scene, Jon pulls them over and tells them to stay out of the way. When Getraer and Grossie catch up to Jon, they decide to try another rolling traffic block. The kidnappers play with the radio in the Rolls and find the police band. The Rolls speeds off and intentionally causes an accident. The kidnappers go to a residential alley and steal a station wagon. When Ponch finds the Rolls, he learns they stole a station wagon and signals to Jon with his "La Coucaracha" horn. The kidnappers drive into the car wash and Ponch is on their tail. Ponch continues to chase them and all the CHP officers center in on him just after he crashes into the station wagon and arrests both of the kidnappers. In the end, everyone has a good laugh as the kids honk Ponch's fancy horn. Grossie is leaning back and forth while Getraer is steady...yet they remain the same distance from each other. They also bounce at the exact same times. When Ponch passes Getraer and Grossie in his borrowed car, he's in the left lane. In the next shot, he's in the right lane and moves to the left. While the Rolls kidnappers play with the radio, Bonnie says she's a mile ahead of them. How'd she do that? At the gas station she lost them. How did she manage to get ahead of them? After the Rolls speeds off the freeway, Jon says they're headed east. If the Rolls was on the 405 headed North (to Canada) then they turned to the left, that would be west. Does Turner have an accent or a speech impediment? After the kidnappers abandon the Rolls, Turner says "Hang in there Miss Costeller." Her name is Karen Costello...not "Costeller". This one has bugged me for years. When Ponch is driving next to the station wagon, the other officers can hear his horn for several blocks. 319 - "Off Road" (02/02/80) Briefing: Plot: Jon and Ponch enter a desert off-road race, unaware that a pair of syndicate thugs are using the race as a cover to retrieve a cache of stolen coins. Guest Stars: Meredith MacRae, Edd Byrnes (from 77 Sunset Strip), Michael Baseleon, and Ramon Bieri Written by: George Geiger Directed by: William Paul Nuckles 320 - "Tow Truck Lady" (02/09/80) Briefing: Fake "Tow Away Zone" signs Plot: A tow truck driver (Danny) puts up a "Tow Away Zone" sign in front of a parked car and tows it away. After the theme, a tomato truck overturns dumping hundreds of tomatoes on the highway. The next day, Jon and Ponch go on a picnic with Ellen, Chris, and Marla (Danny's Daughter). Meanwhile, Danny tows in a car and we find out that he's stealing them to pay off a loan. Since he has to work late, Marla goes to work with Ponch. After the briefing, Ponch gets Bonnie to bring Marla to school. On the highway, a hay truck catches fire and rolls over, causing a major accident. Later, Chris shows off his ring of "fire". Then they have a "party" with chips and dip. Danny calls and tells Marla he has to keep working. The next day, Marla steals Chris's motorbike and goes home to try to get her dad on the CB. Danny's partner in crime goes to Danny's house to stop the girl. She sneaks out and hides in the car he's towing. After towing it to a junkyard, they raise it with a crane to hide it...with Marla inside. Ponch climbs the crane and rescues her just before the car crashes to the ground. Upon landing, they see Jon's girlfriend Diane's Mercedes 450SL being stolen. Ponch and Jon drive after them in Jon's truck but have to stop to help an overturned truck. After starting to strip the Mercedes, the strippers see a drug drop. The plane which lands after the drop is then secretly inspected by narcotics enforcement. The next day, Diane's car is recovered...stripped. We also see another drug drop. The "narcs" rush to investigate but are stopped by the "wheelie-boppers". Meanwhile, the drugs are brought to the "Bar X Ranch" and the car strippers legally buy back the stripped car. That night, Diane sees her Mercedes at a restaurant...assembled. The next day, Ponch and Jon are at Brigid's Cafe when Grossie walks in and buys Jon's uneaten lunch. Meanwhile, the strippers steal another car that happens to speed by our favorite "wheelie-boppers". Unfortunately, Ponch and Jon miss the turn off and lose the strippers but find the narcs. The next day, Ponch and Jon go hiking looking for the car strippers and are caught by the drug dealers. Ponch and Jon are let go and find the car strippers who tell them they say something dropped from the plane. Jon realizes the best way to catch the drug drop in action is skydiving. After the drop is made, Ponch and Jon jump down to catch the drug dealers red handed. As a reward, Ponch and Jon get strawberry ice cream cones just outside of Brigid's Cafe. It was even clear when they were skydiving. Just after Jon stops his truck because of the "accident" on the road, we see Bonnie walking along taking a measurement of skid marks. Why? Did someone die? Accident reconstruction teams aren't supposed to be called in unless someone died. How could someone have died when the worst that happened was the truck slowly tipped over? And we know the drivers are okay since Ponch says, "Luckily no one was badly hurt." Before Ponch knows who the ice cream is from, he's about to eat it. Isn't that dangerous? What if someone had something against the CHP and wanted to hurt an officer? 322 - "Thrill Show" (02/23/80) Briefing: Bus robbers Plot: Bonnie meets an old friend who is now a famous stuntman. On patrol, Ponch and Jon come across some people who were robbed on a bus. They search for the car but can't find it. That night, Bonnie shows up at Getraer's while he is examining some gem stones. She tells Getraer that she is considering leaving the force for a $30,000/year job at the thrill show (about twice what she makes as a CHP). The next day the buss bandits are at it again. Turner, Baker, and Poncherello respond. Ponch finds teh getaway car empty. After the briefing, the CHP enjoys watching the Chitwood's Thrill Show's death defying stunts. Bonnie starts training for the show but Ponch and Jon aren't enthusiastic. On their way home, a woman waves her scarf out a bus window. Jon calls it in from the CB in Ponch's Firebird. Turner and Baricza respond. After Baricza is sideswiped off the road, Ponch and Jon identify themselves and the bus starts ramming Ponch's car. After getting rammed Ponch drives about a half mile on two wheels and the bus gets away. The next day, Grossie spots a tour bus in an area not usually visited by tour busses. The CHP responds when the thieves leave the bus. Grossie, Baricza, Ponch, Jon, and Turner are all chasing them when Getraer joins in and gives orders. They all help catch the thieves in possibly one of the most thrilling "CHiPs" chases ever. Back at Central, everyone's happy to learn that Bonnie is staying a CHP officer. The next day, Ponch and Jon respond to a call about an Army tank in the street. It's on the way to a funny car show. Back at Central, Jon has Grossie thinking there was an imaginary tank...until he shows Grossie the picture Ponch took of him standing on the turret. Later, Ponch and Jon go to visit Bonnie's CB friend, "Blabbermouth". Meanwhile, Baricza spots an accident on the highway and Turner shows up to chase the car which caused the accident. A few miles down the road, he finds a car going backwards down the freeway. Upon closer inspection, he realizes that it has two front ends. The next day, Turner and the other officers agree to help Grossie with his article. Then Jon goes looking for clues at the trucking company Bonnie named as running her off the road. Later, Ponch and Baricza head out to a report of a downed airplane...but learn that it's a funny car. Meanwhile, Jon learns that none of the truck trailers have logos on the back of them. Back at Central, Grossie plays a shrink and questions Bonnie. In the hallway, Ponch and Jon talk to "Blabbermouth". He joins Bonnie and reveals that there really wasn't a truck in her way. After the other go-cart gets away, Ponch returns to find Jon. At the briefing, Ponch realizes he saw the thieves leaving the Price Bros store. After the briefing, everyone's wondering if the go-cart driver was a member of the CHP's go-cart team. Later, the "Special Guest Stars" are stealing office equipment. Baricza's the first in persuit and Bonnie soon joins in. After the commercial, Ponch and Jon join the chase. Not far down the highway, Sonny Bono's truck loaded with all the office equipment rolls down a hill. He runs off before Ponch and Jon arrive. That afternoon, Ponch takes charge of the go-cart club meeting. As he and Jon leave, Ponch notices Wayne's helmet...the same one the reckless driver was wearing. The next day, on duty, Ponch goes to talk to Wayne but spots him on his go-cart in the street. Wayne ends up making a van splash into a lake so Ponch stops to help. Wayne turns around and comes back to call it in for Ponch. Ponch dives in and pulls the woman out. After everything turns out fine, Wayne admits he just wants his parents to come home. At the go-cart track, Ponch and a fireman challenge each other to a race. Ponch goes off the track and loses. To raise money, the go-cart kids hold a car wash. All the CHP officers show up and end up having a water fight. At the go-cart race, the CHP is behind the fire department up until the last race where the CHP wins 14 to 12. The next day, Baricza checks out a closed warehouse claiming to be having a sale. After looking in the window, he drives out back and spots the truck. After calling it in, he chases them. When the van's under water, where's the light coming from? As Ponch pulls the woman to the shore of the lake, the sirens don't repeat right. They were probably dubbed in later. Bonnie puts Wayne in her cruiser after the lake incident...but what about his go-cart? Will she put it in the trunk? Leave it there? Why does Baricza stop to look in the windows of ASAP Furniture? Baricza stops, calls in the escaping truck, moves the couch in his way, and resumes the persuit. Wouldn't it be faster to move the couch and call it in while you're driving? Where's Grossie? 402 - "Sick Leave" (09/28/80) Briefing: Stolen frat statue Plot: Ponch, Jon, and another officer are having lunch but end up chasing a speeder. The other officer (Andy) chases the speeder like a maniac and causes Ponch to flip off his motor. Fortunately he's ok and Andy continues the chase. Back at Central, Andy apologizes and starts crying. When Andy brings his son back to his fraternity, a rival frat is stealing their mascot with a helicopter. All Andy does is laugh. That night at dinner, Andy tries to pay Ponch for dinner and gets upset when Ponch refuses the money. While Ponch and Jon discuss Andy's problem with his son, Andy witnesses a drug drop and pickup. and chases the guy who made the pickup. When Andy returns to central, he learns that it was a ransom payoff. Soon Andy falls over. Ponch and Jon go to visit him in the hospital but he's just leaving. He claims that he just needs to lay off the late nights (of watching "CHiPs"). Out on patrol, Andy chases after frat guys chasing the bird that they stole. Jon and Ponch join in on the chase. When Andy forces the truck to stop, the bird flies into a pool. Jon and Ponch go to the hospital to find out what's really wrong with Andy. The doctor won't tell them until they introduce someone who claims to be (and luckily is) Andy's son. The doctor tells them all that it's not overwork...it's a tumor on the brain. Later, Andy, Ponch, and Jon realize that Andy's going blind. He refuses to take time off. When two ramming frat cars go by, Andy takes off followed by Ponch and Jon. One of the cars ends up going into a flood control canal and flips over. Andy carries a girl to safety as the car explodes. Andy his hit in the back by shrapnel. Andy's last words were, "Remember I said if I could save one life it would be worth it." Back at the fraternity, the bird is back and a plaque is given in memory of Andy Stratowski. Ponch, Jon, and Andy's son agree to sneak back that night and put sunglasses and a cigar on the bird. Tom tells Jon how he's the subject of several bizarre accidents caused by Glinco Industries. In the CHP lunchroom, Ponch is eating health food instead of his usual "Peanut Butter Chocolate Smoothy" just because he wants to date one of the owners of the health food store. Soon we see him out running and doing silly agility exercises with the two women from the health food store. Meanwhile, Tom is making a delivery when he comes upon a Glinco Industries truck that he tries to pass. When his steering gives out, he gets stuck on the side of the Glinco truck and causes a woman to drive off the road. Later, when Ponch jogs out by Tom's farm, Tom's partner, Cal, runs off suspiciously. On duty, Ponch encounters a kid who caused an accident when his sailboard crosses traffic. The kid throws a tantrum and Ponch helps him out by talking to his father. On the freeway, the women from the health food store are escorting Tom when a UPS type truck cuts them off and knocks Tom off the road. Cal was driving the truck. Tom is injured in the accident as are the women. One of the women is unconsious and threatened by acid leaking from a tanker truck. Ponch gets her out just before the broken valve on the tanker breaks. At the end of the episode, Ponch and Jon try to show off at sailboarding but just make fools of themselves. Ponch and Jon visit a biker bar to find out information, but get nothing. When they leave, the find two bikers and chase them. After Getraer's wife goes into false labor again, Baricza's plane returns with pictures of the hideout the bikers were riding away from. It's situated well in a valley. When nobody can come up with a rescue plan, Ponch and Jon plan to go in on their "micro-lite" planes. When they land, they knock on the cabin door and capture some bikers. They then chase the ones that run away. After catching everyone, we see Bonnie, Ponch, and Jon waiting outside the hospital. Mrs. Getraer had another false labor. Just as the show ends, she goes into labor again. The next day, Ponch and Jon are in court for the "Stan West" case and find out it was given a continuance. Next, Ponch and Jon stop by the hospital to verify injuries for Jon's reports. Later they check in the the new Deputy DA about the drunk driver. When a gas main breaks at the hospital, the babies in the maternity ward have to be transported to another hospital. When a crazy driver (Stan West) tries to knock a car off the road, the baby transporting ambulance gets run off. Nobody's hurt, but Grossie ends up holding babies until the CHP arrives to take the babies to Central. Ponch questions Stan West when his car is identified at the accident. Later at the drunk guy's trial, he is found guilty of public intoxication and not drunk driving. In a few hours, Ponch and Jon return to the courthouse and reveal that "Stan West" is one of multiple aliases. Meanwhile, the drunk guy is out driving again. Ponch and Jon chase him just before he crashes. This time he doesn't switch places with his wife because she flew out of the car window and died. Later, the CHP deliver the babies to their new home. The transport goes quietly because they're all using "The Getraer Method". He then goes to a drive thru window and robs them. In his escape, another car crashes into him but he takes off again while Ponch and Jon chase him and the theme begins. When the car turns into an alley, he backs up and Jon swerves to avoid him and has a minor spill. Later, Ponch visits the bank to tell them he's got $4500 extra. "An error as little as six cents can throw us into turmoil for weeks." After the briefing, Sarge tells Ponch that his rent check bounced. Meanwhile, Sonny Matson steals a hot rot and is (unsuccessfully) chased by the owner. When Ponch returns to the bank, he doesn't get any answers. When Matson pulls off another robbery, Turner chases them and is soon joined by Ponch and Jon. When Turner swerves to avoid a school bus, he flips his cruiser. At Ponch's apartment, Bonnie finds that the bank forgot to add one of Ponch's paycheck deposits. Meanwhile, Matson shows off his escape method of rolling the car. Back at Ponch's bank, he can't get the error fixed until he asks if Mr. Burns walks or drives to work. Meanwhile, Matson steals another car and has it equipped with jets. At Ponch's bank (yet again), Ponch and Jon go see the manager, Ms. Rogers. While attempting to finally fix the problem, Matson shows up at the bank with his assistand Dyle. While Ponch distracts Dyle, Jon puts the cuffs on him. Bonnie chases Matson in his car while Ponch and Jon take a shortcut. When Ponch and Jon cut him off, he hits the jets and loses control and crashes. Ponch and Jon make the arrest. Back at the bank once more, Ponch deposits his $405 paycheck (asking for $20 cash butgetting $20.06 cash for some reason). Ponch leaves the bank after secretly slipping the 6 cents into her teller drawer. At the strip again, we learn the CHP chipped in to get a car...except Grossie didn't contribute. Meanwhile, the thieves start to get worried when they realize they took some CHP parts. Harlan tells everyone of their misfortune at the briefing. Their next time on the strip, the thieves blow a tire so they steal more. After talking with a woman who had construction equipment stolen, Ponch spots the van that was used to escape by the thieves. He follows it. The next day, the thieves are at the woman's construction site again While Ponch and Jon attempt to catch them, one of them tries to escape in a forklift. He tries to kill Ponch with a forklift. (But he only "kills" Ponch's car!) After Jon and Turner catch the guy, Grossie tells them he found their missing parts. Jon and Getraer chase two thieves while Ponch (in the "CHiPs" dragster) chases the thief in the other dragster. Ponch manages to stop him by opening his 'chute in front of the guy. Ponch and Jon spot the van and chase it until they have to stop to assist with an overturned mattress truck. At the CHP communications center, Bonnie and Baricza assist with a demonstration of emergency transmission equipment. Later, Ponch and Jon investigate the stolen van and find out it's carrying dangerous chemicals. When Ponch and Jon find a Crafter van that went off the road, Ponch pulls out the driver just before it explodes. The chemical reacted with the floor of the van and created an explosive gas. Later, Ponch meets the terrible dispatcher, Kathie, in person. He falls in love. Meanwhile, Grossie stops a Crafter van looking for dangerous chemicals. After inspecting it, he chases a dog off the highway and falls over trying to catch it. When he falls, the transmitter sends out Grossie's emergency signal. Sarge, Bonnie, the LAPD, Ponch, Jon, Baricza, and Turner all show up to Grossie's rescue. That night, Ponch has a date with Kathie while Jon dates the regular dispatcher, Pam. After the next day's briefing, Jon and Ponch split up to follow a suspect. After losing the car for a while, Jon finds out they went to a warehouse. When the van thieves inside spot Jon, they bust out and knock over Jon. His emergenct transmitter is set off. In order to get the call out to Ponch, Kathie overcomes her speaking problems. Jon gets up and is alright. After investigating the warehouse, a citizen report locates the stolen van. Ponch and Jon manage to locate it near an abandoned ship. Baricza shows up to help. While the three officers search the ship for the suspect, Baricza gets trapped in the engine room. Jon catches one as he tries to escape in the Crafter van. Just after they both jump out, the van explodes. After the suspect is arrested, Ponch and Jon find Baricza. Back on the streets, Jon admires the dispatcher's voice and Ponch arranges for him to meet her in the parking lot. It's Kathie and she's overcome her terrible radio voice. Great Scene: Leave it to Grossie to mess up and get the entire CHP to respond to his false alarm. Just as Getraer, Ponch, and Jon arrest the suspect, the bike rider asks if he can help. Why didn't he ask two minutes ago when the guy escaped from the ship? He just watched. One suspect is arrested in the end. Wasn't there more than one in the warehouse? What happened to the rest? Ponch and Jon find Baricza in the engine room together. Shouldn't they have split up? 412 - "Home Fires Burning" (02/01/81) Briefing: "The arsonists are talking" Plot: When Ponch finds out Grossie is organizing a basketball team for an exhibition game, Ponch gets an idea and takes a few days off. Later on, Jon and Grossie tell a man to pull over before he changes his flat tire. Minutes later up the road, two men blow up a mobile home. While Jon and Grossie question a kid who witnessed the explosion, Grossie loses the kite he was flying. Later, the CHP team practices for basketball and meet the opposing team. Out on the highway, a mobile home owner on a fishing vacation pulls over to fix a flat and someone drives up through his entire home. Meanwhile, a Ron Howard look-alike and his partner try to burn a mobile home for the insurance money while the security guard was inside. Jon and Baricza manage to get him out and save the smoked out home. When the owner arrives, his story is conflicting and he has to tell the truth and face a possible murder charge. Later, Jon finds the wife of the fisherman walking towards Disneyland and reunites her with her husband. When the arsonists try to burn the motor home again, Baricza chases them and Jon soon joins in. While Baricza captures the Ron Howard look-alike, Jon pulls the other guy from his rolled-over van. At the basketball game, Central CHP is warming up when Ponch brings in his recruits. As it turns out, Central is the only station without a 7 footer. Everyone is shocked when the other team comes in on unicycles. After Sarge remembers seeing them at the circus, the CHP sits out to enjoy the show. (Note: Jon and Ponch are wearing #'s 3 and 4...which are their call numbers.) The next day, we find out that the watchman will live and that the one that setup the silly basketball game was the Captain. Aikens) Plot: Ponch and Jon finish up a day of scuba diving when Ponch smells smuglers. They can't chase the ones in the boat so they go after the lookout on land. They let the guy get away when they stop to help an overturned kelp truck. After filing reports at Central, Baricza chases someone trying to make a getaway. He's soon joined by Ponch who notices the car he and Jon were chasing earlier. On a tight turn, Baricza almost drives off a cliff. After Ponch and Jon help out Baricza, Ponch check out the car he spotted. When a caterer leaves the suspect's house, Ponch pulls over his truck for nothing except to ask some catering questions. After talking to Getraer, Harlan tells Ponch and Jon to meet him at 8:00 that night. In his garage, Ponch and Jon learn that Harlan has a hill racer similar to the suspects. The next day, Ponch, Jon, Bonnie, Baricza, and the kelp women go scuba diving. At dinner, they have kelp salad. Later that night, Ponch and Jon take pictures of the license plates at the suspects' house. Minutes later, they crash the party and take more pictures. When they come up with a lame excuse for being at the party, they leave and are followed. After starting a drag race with the guy, they turn around and head the other way. After the briefing the next morning, Grossie chases the suspect car and is joined by Turner. The suspect turns off on a side road and Ponch and Jon follow to observe. When the smugglers spot Jon, they abandon ship and sink it. The lookout on the hill drives off and right by Jeb and Grossie and is chased by Bonnie in Harlan's hill racer. When Bonnie finally catches up to the suspect's car, the suspect is scuba diving into the water. Ponch and Jon contact their kelp girlfriends and use their boat to search for the sunken contraband. When they arrive at the sunken boat, the smuggler is there...and so is a shark! Ponch and Jon get in the cage and ride down in safety. Under the sea, either Ponch or Jon (I can't tell in the SCUBA gear) hurts a shark...and they manage to get the smuggler into the cage. Jon arrests Danny Partridge while Ponch looks for the other one. He finds an old friend, Rivas, who denies seeing anyone. As Ponch rides off, Rivas gets the girl who was riding the motorbike out of a parked car and tells her where to run. After the briefing, Ponch and Jon go looking for more information on the stolen bikes. After they visit a youth center, some kids are trying to break into Ponch's car. Ponch and Jon chase after them in Ponch's car but get pulled over by the LAPD. The officer is a jerk and gives them a hard time. After they threaten the officer, they go looking for the crime boss, Andy Macedon. Meanwhile, Baricza encounters Danny Bonaduce and friends stripping a car. He gets beat up by Danny until he pulls his gun on him and Danny runs off. That night, Baricza is at the youth center with Ponch and Jon looking for Danny. The rest of the CHP is there to show off their talents to the kids. Harlan plays ping pong while Grossie gives dancing lessons and Bonnie shows off at gymnastics. Everyone is interested in Ponch's karate lessons though. The next day, Ponch and Jon chase a van that fits the description of the one that Baricza encountered. The van rolls over and Danny is arrested while his friend gets away on foot. That night, Ponch is giving Karate lessons when Andy Macedon shows up and picks a fight with Ponch. Ponch refuses to fight and they call it a night. The next day, Rivas is fired and joins Macedon's group. That night, Ponch shows up at Andy Macedon's secret meeting. He has a fight with Andy and beats the crap out of him (after going through some rough treatment himself). The episode ends with people willing to turn him in and prove he's a crook. Later, Turner and Baricza almost collide while Ponch and Jon arrive to nab the car they were chasing. Although that was Turner's fault, Baricza blames himself. He decides to quit the CHP because he couldn't handle doing both crop dusting and highway patrol. Baricza calls in Ponch and Jon to check out some crop vandalism. "Sherlock Poncherello" finds a campsite receipt. When Ponch follows up, he meets up with Lyle's campsite neighbor. Meanwhile, Barry makes an emergency landing when Lyle's truck interferes. After repairs, Barry is flying again. At the V.A. Hospital, Ponch and Jon learn that Lyle did defoliation in Vietnam. When Getraer brings Barry his termination papers, he reveals he doesn't want to take over the crop dusting business like his dad thought. After Getraer leaves, Lyle Pickett shows up bearing Molitov Cocktails. Ponch and Jon chase him but get caught in the mud. They get a ride with Pete Baricza while Barry Baricza uses the biplane to chase Lyle. When Barry leaves Lyle in the dust (literally), Lyle rolls his truck and is caught by Ponch and Jon. In the end, Barry tells Getraer he doesn't want to quit and rips his termination papers. Ponch and Jon give him the thumbs up and the credits roll over a picture of the biplane in flight. Out on their beats, Ponch and Jon stop for a coffee break. When Ponch gets coffee spilled on him, he has to go back to Central. Ponch overhears his phone conversation about a "freak" bugging his family. He offers to help but Getraer remains pissed. That night, Grossie, Bonnie, and the rest of the CHP play "Defender". Meanwhile, the "Community Citizens Patrol" pulls over a doctor and smashes his tail lights. The next day, after the phone company tells Getraer his home phone number has been changed as he requested, his wife notices "FINK" painted on their house. At Central, Sarge gets a box in the mail. When he opens it..."BANG BANG"...a little sign pops up. On patrol, Ponch and Jon swing by Getraer's house to try to figure out what's wrong. Soon, Getraer shows up and the whole story is told. Out on the streets, the CCP tries to pull over a car but cause it to crash into a glass truck. When Ponch and Jon find out that "Gibson" caused the crash, they go talk to him. Later that day, the Getraers move in with Bonnie. Ponch and Jon show up with vanilla ice cream just before the vigilante puts a "FINK" sign outside Bonnie's door. Jon, Getraer, and Ponch chase him in Jon's truck but have to stop when the road is blocked by an accident. Luckily Getraer got the letters and Ponch got the numbers on the plate. Meanwhile, a drunk guy almost hits a boy and a CCP member chases him. When the drunk finally stops and gets out, the CCP tries to run him down claiming, "It was a drunk like you that killed my boy!" When the DMV report comes in, Getraer rushes out to get the guy. Grossie has dispatch call Jon and Ponch for backup. Unfortunately, Getraer gets there first...alone. The vigilante escapes out the back and Sarge chases after him to a junkyard. The vigilante drops a grenade that makes Sarge tumble off his motorcycle. Soon he's back in the chase and follows Ponch and Jon. Gibson catches up with the vigilante and causes him to crash shortly before Ponch and Jon arrive. Jon arrests the vigilante while Ponch chases Gibson. Ponch catches Gibson after he falls in a pond. That night, Grossie is getting great scores in "Defender". Everyone (except Grossie) laughs when they realized Harlan rigged it. Baricza must have gotten a game with a broken speaker...he's still playing but we hear nothing. The grenade explosion seemed pretty mild. Shouldn't a weapon of war have caused more destruction? After Getraer spills off his motorcycle because of the grenade, his windshield audibly and visibly breaks. After Ponch and Jon drive off, it's perfect! Those junkyard repairmen are pretty quick! 420 - "Dead Man's Riddle" (05/10/81) Briefing: Plot: A female psychologist assigned to the Accident Investigation Team fears she may have been responsible for a serious crash. The CHP detectives recreate a puzzling high-speed accident. Martinson The "CHiPs" Season 5 Episode Guide The "CHiPs" Episode Guide - 1981-82 501 - "Suicide Stunt" (10/04/81) Briefing: Box Office Bandits Plot: Ponch and Jon are escorting Janos (pronounced Ya-nosh), a Hungarian motorcycle star, to the permanently-moored Queen Mary while Grossie covers them in an overhead plane. When two thieves rip off the ticket office, confusion ensues. Jon chases the thieves' car but loses them when they pull into a parking lot with hundreds of parked cars. Later, at the benefit buffet, Janos steals the limo keys from his escort and drives off with Maria. Ponch and Jon chase them in their personal vehicles. Jon blocks him off in front while Ponch covers the rear while the Long Beach PD arrives. On the Queen Mary, Jon helps cook up an excuse so Janos isn't arrested. The next day, after the CHP has their briefing, Janos escapes from a tour of the Queen Mary's engine room and dives off the ship. When he arrives at Maria's, she is getting on a bus. He steals a truck to chase her. He manages to stop the bus at a park but leaves when Ponch arrives. Ponch goes back to the Queen Mary and Janos pretends he never left the ship. The next day, anticipating a Box Office Bandits theft at the circus, Jon organizes a stakeout. When it happens, the CHP is ready. They catch the bandits, but Janos escapes on his motorcycle...jumping Turner's cruiser. Bonnie is with Maria so Janos can't kidnap her....but Janos is on the roof of Central. He lights a fire in Harlan's dumpster and kidnaps Maria while the CHP is distracted. Janos abandons the car and steals a truck. Ponch, in the CHP plane, realizes that Jon is closest..."but not close enough." He decides to have the pilot, Bob, bring the plane in close so he can jump on the back of the truck. Janos is so amazed at Ponch's stunt that he stops the truck and praises Ponch while being arrested. Since Janos is in jail, Jon decides to do the "fire of death" for the widows and orphans at the benefit show. Jon does some minor stunts and then drives the motorcycle through a wall of flames. The Hungarian bodyguard calls Ponch and Jon crazy and everyone laughs as the credits begin. When the Wilsons pull off another stunt, their son gets hurt and Jon tells Ponch to call for an ambulance. Ponch spots the father and uncle of the kid and chases after them. He has to stop when he falls off his motor and wrecks it. Later, Ponch and Jon split up to search for the kid's parents. Jon finds them and warns them. After he leaves, their son shows up. Later, the uncle kidnaps the kid so he can teach him how to be a man. The father, Ponch, and Jon all chase after them. In the chase, the camper goes off the road and rolls over. Later, the speed-mobile race is on. Jon wins and Grossie's glad he upped his bets. The show ends with Jamie being offered a ride in the CHP speed-mobile. He seems to be more cautious than normal here. 503 - "Moonlight" (10/18/81) 3 Briefings: Catch that Camaro / How to Fingerprint a Car Tire / Happy Anniversary Jon and Ponch Plot: Some guys are dumping toxic waste and one of them speeds off to keep Ponch and Jon away from the dumping. He ends up causing a major accident. After the briefing on that car, the other CHP officers try to get Sarge in on the celebration of Ponch and Jon's 4th anniversary. Out on the streets, two women on motorcycles start shooting at a car. They end up distracting the driver as he drives through an explosives truck. Ponch just stands by watching and holding back traffic because it's for a movie called "Angel Patrol" (...or a scene from "CHiPs"). When a horse is spooked, Jon jumps off the back of Ponch's motor and onto the horse. He stops it. Meanwhile, a girl gets sick after playing around toxic waste. Ponch and Jon visit some old friends looking for info on who may have dumped the chemicals. When they return to the dump site, they end up chasing that Camaro again. Jon gives up the chase when chemicals burn a hole in Ponch's tire, causing him to fall off. Baricza finds the chemical barrels. After the second briefing, everyone thinks Ponch is hurting for money because he keeps taking on extra traffic details. Out on the streets, Ponch and Jon finally manage to stop the Camaro. That night, everyone shows up at Ponch's apartment. (Sarge says he came because he just wanted to play a record and he doesn't have a record player.) It turns out, the chemical dumper was in debt so he used his boss, Charley's, car (that was supposed to be in the shop) while dumping. Robbie tells Ponch and Jon that there's another dumping run in progress. Charley and Gil get in a fight and the truck goes off the road and starts to burn. To prevent the explosion from sending up a cloud of poison gas, Ponch and Jon send the cab down the hill away from the trailer. At the third briefing, Ponch presents Jon with the speakers he was eyeing at the top of the show. Jon tells Ponch he sold his stereo to get Ponch a record changer/turntable. Then Ponch tells Jon he sold his stereo too. Everyone has a good laugh as the credits begin. Jon follows after them. The speeders leave a trail of accidents behind just before the theme. As they take care of the fruit stand accident, Jon attempts to piece together what happened. Jon and Steve go and visit Steve's brother to try to find out more information. Back at Central, Jon discusses the accident with Getraer. Before the briefing, Grossie tries to get Jon to go to the fun park with him and his nieces on Saturday. Later, Ponch and Steve go to talk to Toro and see the "Indy" bikers. Jon questions him about them and gets nowhere. After the commercial, Steve manages to get some information out of Toro. Back at Central, Jon and Getraer discuss the indy racing. Later, Jon and Steve stake out Toro's garage. When Toro goes riding in the flood control channels, Jon and Steve are secretly following him. The next day, Jon, Steve, and Harlan go out to a motorcycle track so Steve can practice racing against Toro. Steve ditches so that Toro will win. After Steve finds out Steve's youngest brother, Ted, moved out of Toro's house, Jon goes to talk to Ted. When one of the indy racers sees Jon, he speeds off and Jon chases him. When he catches him, Jon arrests him. Later, Toro finds out that Ted's going to race. He and Steve head to the flood control channel and his wife calls Jon. Jon's on his way and calls for backup on his truck's CB. After the commercial, he arrives at the flood control channel. As he drives in, the racers drive out. Jon chases them and is joined by Steve and Toro on their motorcycles. Steve kills Ted's engine. After they all stop, the other racer speeds off. Steve calls for Baricza on Jon's CB while Jon chases after the racer on Ted's motorcycle. Meanwhile Baricza sets up a roadblock with Turner, Clark, and Getraer. When Jon and the racer arrive at the roadblock, Jon manages to squeeze between cruisers by doing a wheelie. The other racer hits a cruiser, flips over it, and gets knocked out. At the waterpark, Grossie finds the whole CHP there to help him (and two of his female neighbors) watch his two nieces. Guest Stars: Robert F. Baricza must have backed up a bit. The end of the episode shows Grossie with his shirt off. This is a big mistake. 505 - "Weed Wars" #3035 (10/31/81) Briefing: Plot: Two greedy, small time marijuana growers looking to make a huge profit run afoul of the law and syndicate hoods; Ponch is hexed by a kid for asking too many questions about a bus accident; Grossman has everyone believing in hexes. Guest Stars: Christopher Lemmon Written by: Rudolph Borchert Directed by: Earl Bellamy 506 - "Anything But The Truth" (11/08/81) Briefing: Unknown (we only saw everyone leave) Plot: While Jon and Steve are out on (now illegal) 3-wheel ATC's, a woman hitches a ride and witnesses a robbery/rape. Later, Baricza finds the witness out on the highway looking for another ride. She gives him a different story than everyone else. Out on the streets, the guy who terrorized the woman earlier rams a car and is about to do the same thing to another woman when Turner shows up. He manages to get away by driving under a parked tractor trailer, chopping the top off of his car. That night, Jon picks up his date, Marcie, who is the same woman that is the hitch-hiking liar. (Plot point!) The next day, Marcie has to go to a self defense class to get out of the ticket and she makes up some lame story to cancel a date with Jon. That night, Jon assists Bonnie and Steve in the self-defense class. When Jon spots her, she says she was caught speeding...but Bonnie then scolds her on hitch-hiking within earshot of Jon. Doh! Then she shows Jon the picture of the guy she drew. She says she was bumped and a victim. When she tells the story to Getraer, everything is contradicting everything else. Later, Jon and Steve double date on ATC's. Marcie says she's an expert but she loses control of her ATC and it flies off a cliff after Jon pulls her off. Back on duty, Getraer tells Jon that Marcie is a compulsive liar. Out on the streets, the nut who rams cars hits a woman a little too hard and she gets knocked out and a truck hits her car. The nut drives off and steals another car while being chased by Jon and Steve. The guy looks just like Marcie's drawing. Jon gets Marcie to come in and tell the whole story. When Jon and Steve go to arrest the guy, he tries to kill them with a forklift! Steve manages to stop it before it crushes Jon and then they arrest him. That afternoon, Jon stops by Marcie's and finds out she's moving away for a fresh start. Back on ATC's, Jon and Steve have been stood up and have to ride alone. Baricza meets up with old friends of his while Grossie and Turner keep complimenting each other on their CHP booth. Later, everyone finds Baricza's friends suspicious and investigate them. Although there's no evidence to support their suspicions, they stay alert. While one crook drops bombs in an airshow simulation, other crooks bomb open the airport safe. Baricza realizes an explosion's not an echo and runs toward it with Bonnie. When the crooks try to run, they see their car being removed from an illegal spot. They steal a car and Baricza and Bonnie are after them. Jon and Ponch take to the air and chase the crooks. When the pilot crook falls unconsious, Ponch climbs down a rope ladder into the crooks' plane and takes control. After bouncing, he lands the plane safely. Great Line: "I got it...cookies!" Why not just move it 10 feet to the side? 508 - "Diamond in the Rough" (11/22/81) Plot: Jon responds to an accident involving Pat, a friend of Getraer's son Timmy. Meanwhile, a black car that sped away from an accident is seen in a garage while the occupants seem to be plotting something illegal. Getraer is seen visiting Pat in the hospital. Later on, we can figure out that a complex bank robbery is being planned. At the Getraer home, it's decided that Pat can stay there. The hit and run car is finally found and the driver arrested. Pat's dad, Bill McGuire, is tracked down and comes in from Los Vegas...but Pat has run away. Steve finds Pat on his way to the hospital to see his mom and arrests him for "Grand Theft Moped" and instructs to walk to the hospital where he meets his dad. The bank robbers get deeper into their plans and the CHP is on the move. As the bank alarm goes off, there's a major traffic accident nearby. While the LAPD takes care of the accident, Jon and Steve chase the robbers car. In a classic truck-backing-into-an-alley scene, they crash into the truck and are arrested. Back at Getraer's house, Sarge knocks over a rock collecting case and everyone laughs. Guest Stars: Claudette Nevins Written by: Frank Telford Directed by: John Patterson 512 - "Mitchell & Woods" (12/18/81) Briefing: Plot: Ponch and Jon stop for a coffee break with Mitchell and Woods (two female traffic officers) but they have to leave to start their new detective jobs. They end up arriving at the station and take their new boss's parking spot. After reviewing their new caseload, a guy walks in and asks to report a murder...and drops dead. Mitchell realizes that she almost went to the prom with the guy so they take the case. While investigating "Buddy"'s apartment when his girlfriend walks in. She came to get his jacket. When Woods goes to open the closet, a guy runs out. Mitchell and Woods chase him. Woods borrows someone's car to chase the guy in his car while Mitchell is holding on to his sunroof. Mitchell soon falls off and causes a major traffic accident. "Closet guy" gets away. While tracking down "closet guy", they end up at a fancy party. After punching the hostess, they leave and go to another party to find information on Buddy. After threatening one guy and leaving another handcuffed to a table, they take on some motorcycle punks and dump them in piles of garbage. After getting lunch and help from Ponch and Jon, they do some investigating. They have a big ring that Buddy had taped to his body appraised. It is worth $250,000 and belongs to "Chickee".. Later, on a mountain road, a Caddy tries to run Mitchell and Woods off the road but drives off a cliff. When they discover that car is also registered to Elanor Martin, they go to her house and arrest her after she confesses. At the bus terminal, they say goodbye to Chickee as she moves to the country. Then they notice that Ponch and Jon are ticketing their car. Ponch and Jon agree to accept lunch instead of ticketing them. They all walk off (leaving the car still illegally parked.) Martinson 514 - "Tiger in the Streets" (01/10/82) Plot: Ponch and Jon chase a "bump and tag" car but while Ponch assists at an accident, Jon follows a girl who tells him her friend fell into a hole. Ponch, Jon, and Baricza realize that it's a large animal trap. The next day, Ponch and Jon show the pit to a woman from animal control. That night, Ponch and Jon visit a custom car shop looking for the "bump and tag" driver. They come back the next morning and talk to the kid they're looking for. Next, Ponch, Jon, and the woman from animal control investigate Kessler's Animal Park. As they're leaving, they get a call about a loose tiger. They set up a trap for it. As they're about to catch the tiger, some "bump and tag" drivers scare it off. Soon, one of the cars rolls off a cliff and the driver is brought to the hospital. That night, Grossie practices his standup routine and tells some racist jokes. He almost gets beat up but Turner saves him. The next day, the tiger is in the streets and Ponch and Jon are there. Getraer soon shows up with a pair of kittens. The tiger runs to investigate and goes right in the cage. Ponch soon learns about a "chicken" race. When Ponch discovers it's held in the flood control channel, he shows up with Jon just in time to stop it. That night, we learn that Harlan got Grossie's jokes from Slappy White. Slappy gets Grossie up on stage and he's not too bad. Everyone knows if you look through binoculars, you see everything in one circle...not two interconnected ones. 515 - "Bright Flashes" (01/17/82) Briefing: Lasers (given by Scotty) Plot: Ponch enters a race and crashes when he's blinded by a laser. The next day, after Ponch's sight returns, the laser operators blind everyone at a bank and steal a money delivery. Harlan signs up Ponch and Jon for a laser light show to demonstrate their effect. Ponch and Jon are called out to Wayne Cato's house where they're given a description of the van that carried the laser. Meanwhile, the laser guys rip off a check cashing liquor store and Turner chases their van but is blinded and causes an accident. Ponch and Jon track down the van's owner (Rich) and arrest him. Wayne ID's the kid just before Scotty (the other laser guy) comes in to brief the CHP on lasers. The next day, Ponch is back racing (antique cars this time) while Bonnie visits Rich's school. At the racetrack, Rich and Scotty rob the ticket office and drive off. Jon gets on a horse to chase them while Ponch follows in the antique car. (This is classic "CHiPs"!) Jon periodically ducks to avoid the laser (he's quick!) and finally jumps on the laser equipped truck and stops them. Guest Stars: George Lindsey (as Wayne Cato), Mark L. Martinson 516 - "Battle of the Bands" #3055 (01/31/82) Plot: After slashing some tires, some punks break into the van of the band "Snow Pink". After stealing guitars, they then set the brakes loose on the van and let it roll down the hill. Ponch and Jon chase the punks but they manage to get away. Back at Central, Jon, Getraer, and Harlan give Ponch some ribbing about his singing. Later, they head out to talk to Snow Pink herself. They return a sliced-up microphone but inform her they haven't found her guitars yet. At her club, Duke is screening tapes. He invites the band "Pain" to be in the Battle of the Bands. We soon find out that "Pain" is the punks' band! Later, at Central, Grossie slam dances against the lockers and tells the history of slam dancing. A classic "CHiPs" moment! Shortly thereafter, Ponch and Jon go visit "Pain". Just before they're about to go inside, one of the band members throws a bass guitar off the roof and onto a car causing a multiple-vehicle accident. After making sure a man's okay, they chase the punks who escape on their motorcycles. The punks climb a barb-wire fence and escape. After Ponch leaves to get ready for his performance, Jon goes to try to talk Duke into more security. When Jon and Ponch meet up again, Ponch admits he's happy being a CHP and doesn't want to give it up. That night, at the Battle of the Bands, "Pain" rips up the bathroom while "Snow Pink" performs. Soon enough, "Pain" begins disrupting the audience. When Duke tries to kick them out, they threaten him with a knife. After the commercial, "Pain" performs. Punks in the audience start slam dancing as Snow Pink notices her guitar being used by a member of "Pain". Since "Pain" locked everyone out, Jon breaks a window to get in. He finds Duke tied up in a closet. Jon enters the concert hall and "Pain" runs off as a riot starts. Police officers get the crowd under control with Jon's vocal help. As the leader of "Pain" tries to escape, Ponch rides up causing the punk to spill. The punk threatens to blow them both up by holding a lighter near leaking gas. Ponch blows out the flame and saves the day. Back inside, Ponch performs "Celebration" in front of Grossie, Turner, Baricza, Harlan, Jon, Getraer, and Bonnie. When he finishes, the winner of the Battle of the Bands is announced as "Snow Pink". Great Line: "Oh Ponch! How could they be sure the van was going to jump onto the beach? Ponch and Jon must be psychic. Without seeing the punks set the van in motion down the hill, he chases them. When the guitar causes an accident, there's nobody in the crashing white car. After checking one person at that accident, Ponch and Jon leave. They ignore everyone else. 517 - "Alarmed" (02/14/82) Briefing: Plot: An ex-CHP officer (Hart) trains female car thieves who target Jon's car. A car alarm expert (Oakland) objects to his daughter following in his footsteps. So it's father against daughter in a clash of car alarm installers. Ponch and Jon play peace keeper. Guest Stars: Written by: Rudolph Borchert Directed by: Phil Bondelli 518 - "In the Best of Families" (02/21/82) Plot: After Ponch convinces Jon to move in with him while his apartment is being painted, they learn a CHP cruiser has been stolen. Baricza, Ponch, and Jon chase the kids in the cruiser who drive on the wrong side of a just-opened section of the Semi-Valley freeway. The kids stop in the center and try to run away while the cruiser gets rammed by typical "CHiPs" jumping-cars. After the theme, Bonnie shows up and gets chewed out by Getraer for not watching her car for a minute while she was in Bruce's Coffee Shop. Meanwhile, the kids meet up with their mother who was planning an armored car rip off. Back at Central, Grossie tells everyone that Captain R. J. Tinsdale has ordered a chapter 10 inspection. That night, Jon shows up at Ponch's apartment and finds that the women neighbors are visiting. The next day, Bonnie is real upset since everyone is making her life difficult. Out on the streets, a West L.A. CHP cruiser is stolen. Ponch, Jon, and Turner all persue it. When turner swerves to avoid oncoming traffic and pedestrians, he flies off a cliff and loses his wheels upon impact. The kids get away again. Jon learns that someone stole a two-tone Dodge Monaco...a match for their cruisers. At the dry cleaners, Getraer learns that his CHP uniform was stolen. While Getraer's out, Ponch spreads a rumor about Getraer getting promoted to Lieutenant. That night, Ponch investigates tbe stolen Dodge Monaco and gets a street map that a thief left behind. After lunch (at Lucy's), Baricza finds his cruiser doors and lights missing. That makes Ponch and Jon the only unaffected CHP so far. In the locker room, Jon figures out that there's going to be a heist. Out on the streets, the fake CHP cruiser makes the armored truck take a detour. The mother cuts the armored car's radio antenna when they stop. THe fake CHP make them stop later on and fill the truck with bees. When the guards run, the fake CHP takes the money. Ponch and Jon show up just in time and chase them. Bonnie and Getraer aren't far behind and help to block them in. They attempt to run down Getraer (who fell over), but Bonnie blocks them with her cruiser and gets rammed. Back at Central, Getraer tells everyone that he's not leaving and that Captain Tinsdale was a tough instructer of his at the academy. After finding out that Captain Tinsdale can't get to L.A. becuase of snow in the mountains, the CHP starts to chase Getraer. Guest Stars: Written by: Larry Mollin Directed by: John Florea 521 - "The Game of War" (03/14/82) Briefing: Rascoe is going to be released from prison Plot: Two teams are playing some sort of army game and firing colored water balloons at each other. It gets out of hand and they leave the field and take it to the streets. The end up causing a major accident and drive off. That night, a former military guy demonstrates his jet pack on the roof of an L.A. building. The next day, a woman fakes car trouble to serve a construction worker with a summons. That night, the CHP holds a chess tournament. The next day, Ponch and Jon go to the local military store when they hear about their game. They deny using colored water balloons and tank insignias. Later, the military rocketeer's van is pulled over for speeding by Bonnie. While he jets out the top, his driver speeds off in the van. Later, an old woman intentionally gets hit by a limo. When she gets up, she serves the passenger. Upset, the limo drives off while her coat is stuck in the door. Ponch and Jon come to her rescue, find out it's Darla, and take her to lunch. Back at HQ, Harlan beats Grossie after their all-night chess game...because Grossie knocks over the chess board as he's about to make the winning move. When attempting to serve Ron Bates with a summons, Darla is caught listening to plans to free Rascoe. As the prisoner transfer is in progress, the military guys create a smoke screen around Turner's cruiser and take Rascoe. Meanwhile, Ponch and Jon notice smoke coming from a van and find the Darla inside. While being chased, Rascoe escapes the van in a jet pack and lands in the head military guy's car. Ponch and Jon show up to arrest them both. Back at HQ, Darla ends up being served by the limo owner, claiming she scratched her limo. Jon talks tough and everyone drops their weapons. Baricza shows up to give Billy a ride. Back at Central, Jeb is handing out trees while Harlan and Grossie play Gin. Off duty, Ponch and Jon visit Carlos' sister. They then go visit Billy at the Oak Street Youth Center. Next, they visit Carlos painting a wall and find Andy there giving him money to get painting supplies. Back at the Youth Center, Andy challenges Ponch to a karate fight "by the rules" in the ring. Nobody's sure if Andy's doing it for "fair or foul." Ponch shows up to the fight like everyone knew he would. When the fight ends, they end up calling it a tie. Outside, two little kids who left the fight early wreck Billy's car. The next day, Jeb hands out more trees while Ponch talks with Carlos. That night, on a double date (Ponch is dating Carlos' sister), Andy shows up and talks with Ponch and Jon. When Andy leaves, Billy hits him with a van. Ponch chases him in his own car but he gets away. When Ponch brings Carlos' sister home, they find the house ransacked. The next day, Billy and his gang goes to Carlos' wall and finds Carlos and Andy. Ponch and Jon show up in Ponch's car. Jon tells them to drop their weapons and they do. But then they start to karate fight. They're no match for Ponch and Jon of course. Later, Carlos is working on his new wall when he's told that the CHP is going to plant trees along the street too. Baricza, Turner, Bonnie, Harlan, and Grossie start arguing over the trees and Andy tells them to "knock it off...and get to work!" Laughter ensues. As they leave, Ponch and Jon chase the animals down an alley and onto a roof. The chimps and dogs are too fast for them though and get away when their owner drives them off in a truck. Later, someone comes to HQ confessing to the crime...but he doesn't know any details so they know he didn't do it an send him home. That night at Chippendales, a CHP look-alike shows up to strip. Bonnie arrives just before he leaves and misses seeing the guy strip. The next day she shows the pictures to Ponch because her friends thought it was him. After the commercial break, Ponch and Jon pull over a speeding Mercedes. The woman they stop thinks that Ponch is the stripper. Meanwhile, Turner sees a bird steal money bags from a Pervis armoured car shipment. Ponch and Jon chase after the bird. When Ponch gets distracted from looking at the bird, he drives off the road and tears his shirt. Back at Central, the guys make stripping music while Ponch takes his shirt off. After the confesser gets let off again, Ponch goes to Chippendales and meets the manager. He gets the impersonator's name and number so that he can talk to the guy. Later, on patrol, Ponch and Jon chase after a motorcycle rider with a dog on his back. They call ahead and have a roadblock set up. It turns out it's not the guy sending animals to rob places so they let him go with just "evadin arrest". That night at Chippendales, the confessor dons a mask and goes inside while Ponch meets his look-alike. When the confessor robs the safe, the look-alike goes after him. When he shows up and confesses, Grossie and Baricza are about to let him go when he recognizes Ponch. They realize that he DID do the crime. When they finally arrest him, he starts denying everything. When Ponch and Jon go to the hospital to meet the look-alike, they find the animal man, chase him, and arrest him. Back at Central, Ponch is offered a job at Chippendales. The truck then backs up and rams Bonnie's cruiser. An ice cream man comes to her rescue and calls in the accident. It turns out that the ice cream guy (Tom Cory) was a CHP sergent 5 years ago; before Bonnie joined up. He went to prison for stealing trucks and just got out of jail 10 days earlier. Back at Central, Harlan has a skunk trapped in the garage and Grossman got all stinky by looking for it. At the park, we learn that Tom's son thinks his father died while doing CHP work...and doesn't know that his dad is really the ice cream man. Later, Tom tries to join up with his old (bad-guy) boss. While the skunk is terrorizing the CHP garage, Tom steals a truck and uses a CHP radio to give false truck locations to the dispatcher. The bad-guy bosses stop following Tom, pull a U-turn, and end up running away from Ponch and Jon thinking that Tom turned them in. During the chase, they bad-guys hit a VW beetle and it rolls down a hill with its owner on the sideboard. Ponch climbs in it and stops it. Back at Central, Harlan, Grossman, and Turner chase the skunk. When Tom steals another truck...this time with a buddy, Bonnie follows until they make a suspicious turn and she could blow her cover. Tom radios the CHP using police codes that tell Ponch and Jon where he's going...but the codes don't let his passenger know that he told them the correct location. The CHP surrounds the warehouse as the bad-guys torch it...with Tom lying inside unconsious. Ponch, Jon, Bonnie, and Baricza make the arrests and then Ponch and Jon go in to save Tom and the big boss. Just as they leave, the warehouse explodes in perhaps the biggest explosion in any episode. Back at Central, Tom tells his son that he is his father. The son, Tommy, goes out to see Harlan and comes back smelly after chasing the skunk away. Nobody wants to get near him except his father. The next day, the delivery truck stops to avoid an accident and the back door opens up and a woman sees the thief in the back. When Ponch, Jon, and Grossie are checking out the accident, the woman is gone. Back at Central, Harlan is trying to figure out why the computer is screwed up. Meanwhile, the one thief tells the other that he is the one responsible for messing up the CHP computer system. After lunch, Ponch and Jon respond to a call about smoke and find the woman cooking near the ocean. When Ponch walks the woman back up the hill, Jon samples her cuisine. Just down the coast, the thieves try to sell their stolen merchandise. After the woman tells everyone at Central about the man in the back of the van, Ponch unsuccessfully tries to get his black-book addresses from the computer. The next day, Ponch and Jon are out riding water-bikes recklessly...their foreshadowing sport of the week. Meanwhile, the thieves try to kidnap the woman who spotted them when Ponch and Jon pull up in Ponch's car. Our heroes chase the thieves until they cause an accident. When investigating the earlier robbery, they discover that the truck was really a Trojan horse. When the thieves' resident hacker finds out that they stole stuff so he could crack into the CHP computer, he gets upset and they tie him up. After the briefing, Ponch and Jon are following leads and find the hacker tied up. He tells them to go to the docks. The thieves have already left when they arrive. Ponch and Jon have to ride water-bikes to catch them. After taking over the boat, they return to land where the woman identifies the thieves. They find out that she's working out well cooking at the "Grub Steak Cafe". Back at Central, Deena (the computer operator) is upset because when she finally gets Ponch's black-book out of the computer, her name isn't in it. After the theme, Ponch gets a demonstration of a drug sniffing dog. Meanwhile, Jon watches another officer garden while they talk about his police dog. On patrol, Ponch and Jenny in unit K-9-1 report to the airport for a narcotics search. When the dog gets the drugs, the pilot who flew them in runs away. Jon's dog officer partner, Sal, sends his dog after him. After the dog catches the guy, Jenny is upset with Sal. After the briefing, Ponch, Jon, Jenny, and Sal go to lunch. Jenny and Sal start arguing. On patrol, Ponch gets Jenny to admit she likes Sal. When a call comes in, Ponch and Jenny with Jon and Sal respond to a bomb threat at a XXX movie theater. Jenny and her dog go inside to search. The dog sets off the (mild) bomb and Jenny is hurt. Jon spots the guy who set the bomb and he, Sal, and his dog go look for him and find him hiding in a school bus. Later, Sal visits Jenny at the hospital. Ponch and Jon show up a minute later. After lots of asking, Ponch tells her that her dog was blinded. Sal convinces Ponch to take her dog home. Ponch is determined to keep the dog in active duty. After the commercial, the James boys rob another bus and get lots of cocaine from one of the passengers. At the park, Ponch shows Sgt. Honeyton that the blind dog can still work. Honeyton isn't convinced. When Baricza spots the James boys, Jon (on his motor) and Ponch (in his car with the dog) respond. After Baricza stops because of car trouble, Jon and Ponch search for the truck. Jon figures it went into a garage. When Ponch goes in with the dog, it finds the cocaine and he arrests one of the James boys. The other escapes in the truck and Jon chases him. After the truck speeds by Sal, he joins the chase. When the truck hits some crates, Sal sends his dog after the guy. When the dog corners him, he surrenders. Later, at the hospital, Sal fights with Jenny as she leaves. When Jenny finds out that her dog is still active, she's back to making bets against Sal. As Ponch and Jon leave, they discuss Ponch's chili. Guest Stars: John Vernon (as Sgt. Then we see Ponch and Jon get up...in the center of a crowd of officers. When we see Getraer come out of the room into the hallway, Ponch and Jon aren't far behind. Apparently they pushed everyone over to walk out almost right after Getraer. After the dog is blind and the bandages are removed, the dog doesn't act blind. (A vet or dog expert should be able to verify this.) How did Ponch know the James boys had cocaine on them? At one point, Baricza gives Turner's call sign. What happened in this episode? They caught two crooks and a dog was blinded. Other than that, nothing really comes of it. We're left with the same question at the end that we had at the beginning...which dog will be kept and which unit will be dropped? 527 - "Force Seven - The Deadly Arrow" (05/23/82) Briefing: Plot: Is it "CHiPs" or is it "Hunter"? Fred Dryer, TV's "Hunter" has the lead role in what we would classify as being a Ponch and Jon contract dispute/vacation episode. Ponch and Jon appear in about 5 minutes of this episode but they still get credit for capturing the evil criminal. The "CHiPs" Season 6 Episode Guide The "CHiPs" Episode Guide - 1982-83 601 - "Meet the New Guy" (10/10/82) Briefing: The Health Club thieves Plot: Ponch (now a training officer known as "Mary 6") is out cruising the roads as "The Lone Ranger" when Getraer radios him and tells him that his new partner is coming to meet him. Within minutes, Bobby spots trouble. While Bobby chases the speeder, Ponch saves a baby and Kathy Linahan calls in the resulting accident. Unfortunately, Bobby lost the speeder. Ponch isn't happy with Bobby for chasing the speeder alone. Soon, they notice that there's nobody in one of the cars and nobody claims the baby. After dropping the baby off at Valley General Hospital, Ponch and "Hot Dog" go back to Central. Getraer puts up a post card on the bulletin from Jon. He says he's thinking of them while he's working his father's ranch in Wyoming. Out in Harlan's garage, Bobby takes off by peeling out. Ponch and Bobby head over to see the owners of the car. They claim they didn't even know it was gone and that they don't know who the baby belongs to. Ponch is suspicious. The next morning, Richard Simmons is leading a workout that Ponch is attending. Richard gives Ponch special attention. Shortly, some thieves rush in and make Richard give them everyone's belongings. Ponch runs out after them as Richard faints. He gets on his motorcycle without his shirt. An LAPD patrol car chases the half-naked Ponch. When the thieves are cornered, they make a run for it. When Ponch tries to chase them, LAPD cuffs him. They don't believe he's a CHP. Lucky for Ponch, Bobby arrives and identifies him. At the briefing, there's a picture of Ponch on Getraer's podium that reads "WANTED - Impersonating an Officer". After the briefing, Sarge tells Ponch and Bobby the identity of the unknown woman from the accident. Meanwhile, the woman (Amy Kent) disguises herself as a nurse and steals the baby. Ponch goes live on TV urging people to turn in Amy Kent by calling the CHP at 555-4374. Later that day, Ponch and Bobby pull over Tommy Lasorda. He says he's late for the World Series. Bobby gives him a hard time but Ponch identifies him and they let him go. They respond to a call telling them where to find the thieves who terrorized Richard Simmons. The thieves split up on foot and Ponch and Bobby split up to go get them. Bobby almost runs over the thief he's after. When the other one falls in a pool, Ponch arrests him. Back at Central, Bobby bitches at Ponch that he's not Jon and wants to be treated differently. Ponch and Bobby also find out that the baby belongs to the couple who claimed not to know their car was missing. They confess and we learn that they bought the baby from Amy for the $2000 that was in the car then she stole the baby back. While Ponch and Bobby are out looking for Amy, she hitches a ride with a person drinking beer. Ponch and Bobby spot the car and chase it. It swerves to avoid construction equipment and jumps off a hill into quicksand. Ponch and Bobby get a ride in a backhoe and rescue Amy and the baby. Ponch tells Bobby he did a good job and they both celebrate by doing wheelies. As Ponch and Bobby pull Amy and the baby from the sinking car, Kathy and Grossie mysteriously appear to watch. While Ponch and Bobby help get Amy and the baby out, the car hardly sinks. When everyone's save and the weight inside the car is reduced, the car plunges down below the surface. (It's discovered by future archaeologists in 2 million years.) Kathy Linahan is a motor officer...but in one of the final scenes, she gives Amy a ride in a cruiser. 602 - "Tight Fit" (10/17/82) Briefing: Stolen diamonds & Ponch is allowed to be a model Plot: When two motorbikers steal a camera bag, Ponch and Bobby chase them and catch them cornered in a parking garage. When Ponch returns the bag, he is asked to be their "Barcelona Man". When Ponch and Bobby pull over a car for an expired registration, it rolls over a cliff. They decide to forget about the ticket. After the briefing, Ponch does some modeling. He learns that one model, Sheila, has a problem and wants to talk to her about it. On patrol, Ponch and Bobby catch a suspected diamond thief. When Ponch and Bobby encounter slow traffic, they learn that the holdup is caused by a picture of Ponch as "The Barcelona Man" on a billboard. Ponch soon gets called downtown to stop a jumper - Sheila. Ponch talks her inside. Back at Central, Bobby learns that the insurance company never heard from the guy whose car went off the cliff. When they go to investigate the accident, they find the wrecked car is gone. They figure out where the car went and find the thieves there. Back on patrol, the stop a truck with a woman giving birth in the back. Ponch delivers the baby as Bobby watches. When the paramedics arrive, Ponch and Bobby ride off. They arrive at the photo studio and try to arrest the photographer for child pornography. He runs off and escapes in a van with Ponch's picture on the side. Ponch and Bobby chase after him and arrest him after he jumps and rolls his van. Back at Ponch's apartment, everyone is watching Ponch's new TV commercial. After the thief jumps her car through a truck, they arrest her. She turns out to be 11 or 12 years old. When Ponch questions her, she says an E.T. made her do it. After hearing the story, Jodi introduces herself to Ponch. Later that day, Ponch and Bobby visit Jodi's mother to find out what's going on in the home. When Ponch and Bobby go to Jodi's court proceeding, her mother is missing. Ponch volunteers to look after her until Mrs. Hendricks is found. That night, the alien (or a helicopter) visits Ponch's apartment and asks Jodi to go with them. When Ponch returns to Central with a broken headlight, he finds Jodi playing backgammon with Getraer. Getraer leads Ponch and Bobby into the other room to meet Dr. Joyce Brothers (who was apparently sitting all alone). After consulting her for two seconds, Ponch and Bobby go visit the alien landing site. Jodi speaks with the alien again and says that they're coming back to get her that night. After the briefing, Grossie and Kathy meet Japanese sergeants who will pose as tourists to catch thieves who have been stealing the tourists' cash. When the thieves make their move, the CHP is ready. Grossie, Kathy, Getraer, Bobby, and Ponch all play a part. That night at Ponch's, Kathy finds Jodi missing. Ponch and Bobby find her at the landing site. They hold her down in gale force winds so the "aliens" can't take her. The winds die as fast as they came on and everything is alright. Bobby says, "It's a helicopter." Ponch tells him, "Bobby, it's whatever you want it to be." At the end of the episode, we learn that the money Grossie got at the briefing was really for another Arthur Grossman and that the chain letters were never mailed. Later, a laid off auto worker is out ramming small imported cars. Meanwhile, back at Central, Grossie is serving egg created cream-puffs. That afternoon, Ponch is back helping kids train for the Special Olympics. Meanwhile, the Nelsons learn that Shake is planning to jump an airplane. The next day, Ponch and Bobby respond to a call about a guy destroying cars. He gets away but Bobby got the license number. Later, when a Special Olympian hears his dad talk about him, he runs away. At lunch, the CHP discusses how to do a perfect bike jump. Out on the streets, Bobby spots the runaway Olympian in a "spillway". Nicky jumps in just before the water is released. Ponch jumps in, lifts him out, and gets lifted out by Bobby just in time. Later, Shake makes his airplane jump while the event is narrated by Stu Nahan. But wait! The show's not over yet! After the commercial, the laid off car wrecker is at it again. When he threatens to blow up the car parts warehouse, Officer Linahan saves the day. After hte next commercial, there's still more! Ponch (and some other CHP) are at the Special Olympics competition. Nicky doesn't come in first, but he's a champion and shares a tender moment with his dad. That night at Shake's celebration party, the hostess presents deviled eggs. Everyone is disgusted (except Grossie). During the crowd shots before Shake's airplane jump, it seems that the crowd shown is at an airshow and not at Shake's jump. 607 - "This Year's Riot" (11/28/82) Plot: After a girl gives "Oliver" a kiss, he loses control of his car and crashes through a traffic barrier. Ponch and Bobby give him a ticket and return to Central. Everyone's planning on taking the day off to go to the beach...but Getraer makes Ponch and Bobby stay on duty. Luckily, Getraer gave them beach duty. The next day, Ponch and Bobby take Ponch's motor home (which he sold in the second season!) to Ocean Island. Ponch is enjoying the ferry ride and Bobby wants to arrest everyone. Ponch takes the covers off their motors and it quiets down a bit. At Grossie's uncle's place, "Oliver" (aka Russell) turns out to be Grossie's cousin! Ponch and Bobby have to cancel a swim to answer a disturbance call. While clearing the disturbance, charcoal spills on a car and it catches fire. The girls in it drive it into the water. Ponch tells Bobby to take his boots off before going in to save them. When a resident complains about nude people on his private beach, Bobby arrests two people from the beach...Grossie and Harlan...who (thankfully) weren't nude. After a musical interlude and some sailing, Russell's friends bury him as Grossie watches. A guy feels sorry for Russell and gives him a "new drug". The person who first tested the drug roller skates through a window. Luckily Ponch was there to stop the bleeding. Meanwhile, Russell knocks over the outdoor shower with some girls in it. They run away and leave Russell crying. Back at Central, Getraer has Bruce doing "dull, dreary, and boring" things. On patrol, Bobby spots the drug dealer. They chase him after he steals an ATC. Soon he abandons the ATC and jumps on a ferry. Ponch jumps his motor onto the ferry to arrest him. Meanwhile, Russell is still sitting in the sand by the broken shower and he takes the drug. Then he takes out his Hobie Cat with a girl. Down the beach, the complaining resident refuses to let people leave the beach. Ponch gets him to drop his rifle and let people off the beach. On the Hobie Cat, Russell gets dizzy and can't control the Hobie Cat. Ponch and Bobby visit a model's house and arrest her for organizing the nude beach. Ponch robes her and tells everyone to put their clothes on or be arrested. Back on the Hobie, they capsize and fall off. Our heroes jump on some jet-skiis and save Russell and the girl before they hit the rocks. That night, Grossie tells everyone that he's "cosmically grown" this weekend. They all toast to Ponch and Bobby...who have follen asleep with women in their laps. Montgomery, Dennis Grace Written by: Gerald Sanford Directed by: Winrich Kolbel 610 - "Fallout" (12/19/82) Briefing: Harlan needs a replacement and possible protest trouble Plot: When Ponch and Bobby come upon an accident caused by a "No Nukes" bus, they meet Getraer's daughter, Ellen. After the briefing, a kid gets hit by a car while playing catch with his step-dad. Ponch discovers bruises and possible child abuse. Later, Getraer visits his daughter at the protest headquarters. Back at Central, Ponch is leading the CHP in riot training. When they finish up, Ponch, Bobby, and Bruce go to the hospital the abused kid admits that he was beaten by his step-father. Ponch, Bobby, and Bruce chase after the step-father as he leaves the hospital. The arrest him after he crashes into several parked cars. Later, the "No Nukes" bus is going under a bridge and its brakes give out. A it crashes, a fire breaks out, and everyone is trapped inside. Ellen manages to keep everyone calm and helps them out. Ponch enters the underpass with a single fire extinguisher, puts out the fire, and gets everyone out. Later, when the protesters refuse to leave, they are arrested...including Ellen. Getraer goes to bail out Ellen and everything turns out fine for them. Back at Central, Harlan shows up to his goodbye party but we learn that he failed his physical because of his eyesight. And why did he and Kathy run in immediately after Getraer did? 611 - "Day of the Robot" (01/02/83) Briefing: Plot: Ponch and Bobby have fun with a robot assigned to their station until it becomes a threat to their lives. (*Snicker* I guess the writer was drunk) Guest Stars: Melody Anderson Written by: Gerald Sanford Directed by: Phil Bondelli 612 - "Hot Date" (01/09/83) Briefing: Captain Burke's inspection & visit from a gorilla Plot: When Ponch and Jon return from patrol, they find everyone preparing for the captain's inspection. Just before the briefing, Ponch gets a note that his flight attendant friend is returning. He manages to get the day off from Grossie (who is in the process of shining his boots.) After the briefing, Ponch's cleaning lady meets a shady character in his apartment building. She refuses to let him inside. At the inspection, the captain makes Grossie walk to the captain to show him his license. The shine on Grossie's boots cracks...and his license is expired! Ponch gets the day off from Linahan after Grosse is stuck at the desk because of his expired license. When Ponch returns to his apartment the next day, two thugs (one is David Caruso) are waiting for him. They capture him. Meanwhile, Linahan and Nelson caught two hitch-hikers. Getraer questions them and they're not helpful. Back at Ponch's pad, we learn that they're getting back at him because he and Bobby caught them breaking in to a warehouse. Later, Ponch's girlfriend shows up and they take her hostage. Ponch has her go get some cheese (and a knife) but one of the thugs sees the knife and stops her. They threaten to re-arrange her face unless Ponch calls for Bobby. Ponch calls and Grossie answers the phone and pages Bobby. Ponch invites Bobby over...and Bobby suspects something because he knows that yesterday Ponch wanted to be alone. While the hitch-hikers are questioned and the vehicle inspection continues, Ponch's cleaning lady shows up at his apartment. When Bobby calls Ponch, Ponch tells him to have Grossie cover for him. (The thieves don't know that Grossie doesn't have a license!) Shortly, the CHP shows up to Ponch's apartment with a bang and save the day! After the hitch-hikers leave, Ponch's girlfriend gets a call (at CHP headquarters) and finds out that she has to work on the next flight. Following up on a lead, Ponch and Bobby visit an arcade. Unfortunately there are "thousands" of guys who come to the arcade...most from a local prep school. Ponch goes to talk to a former auto-thief who now works in the auto shop at the school. Back at Central, Getraer decides to have Bruce go undercover at the school. The next day, while Bruce is at school, Ponch and Bobby try to get information on the car thefts from a kid at a car wash. When Bruce leaves school, he's chased by two trucks. Ponch and Bobby finally catch up with Bruce as the trucks get away. They arrest Bruce to make it look good. At the arcade, Bruce learns that the car thieves are the guys that were chasing him. (Duh!) That night, Ponch and bobby find a kid hot-wiring a car and chase him until he hits a fireworks truck. Meanwhile, Bruce is at the "Grease Hop" at the school. After Danny Bonaduce gets selected King of the dance, Bruce gets captured by the car thieves. They bring him out into a van (and amazingly it's daylight!) and the auto shop teacher spots them. Ponch and Bobby show up at the right time and chase the van. They arrest the car thief and save Bobby (who is now consious). They find an orangutan that feels bad for its owner (who was knocked unconsious). When they visit the owner in the hospital to get information on the accident, he isn't helpful. It turns out that the cattle are stolen. The owner can't identify the men he was working for, but the orangutan can. Ponch takes her out for a ride on his motor. That night, Ponch and Bobby go undercover at "The Palimino" with the orangutan. During the third country song, Ponch and Bobby end up in the middle of a bar fight. The music continues. The next day when Getraer finds out about it, he's upset with Ponch and Bobby. While they go to visit the victim of stolen cattle, they leave the orangutan with Harlan to clean cars. Ponch and Bobby find out that the cattle have anthrax. Later, Ponch and the monkey are out on patrol. (But THIS monkey isn't Bobby!) That night, Ponch and Bobby return to the country bar "looking to sell some land". The meet a gentleman who tells them where to find the cattle rustlers that have the cattle with anthrax. When Ponch and Bobby show up, they chase the rustlers and arrest them after their truck rolls over. Back at Central, the orangutan shows up to say goodbye. Laughter ensues. Meanwhile, someone on a motorcycle is kidnapping Mrs. Howell's dog. Ponch and Bobby hear the screams for help and chase the motorcycle rider. He jumps a fence and escapes. At Central, Ponch and Jon are assigned to the dognapping. Bruce is assigned to help out. Ponch and Bobby stop by a sick kid's house who says he heard people planning to steal a dog. The kid needs a liver transplant and has less than a month to live. After leaving his house, Ponch and Bobby meet Bruce at an old motel. They find their motorcycle rider and chase after him. Ponch and Bruce manage to get him to stop by forcing him to crash into a pond. Later, Ponch goes with the kid to the observatory while Bruce entertains Mrs. Howell at Central. While Kathy is dog hunting, the sick kid is running away from home. After getting a ride with a trucker friend, he tries to get another ride from another trucker friend but can't contact him. When he moves on, he leaves his medicine behind. While Ponch, Bobby, and Bruce go looking for the kid, Kathy, Webster, Grossie, and the dog's owner bust the dognappers. Meanwhile, the kid and his CB friend head south on a motorcycle. When the "chopper" gets a flat, he contacts another CB friend. At the kid's house, Ponch, Bobby, and Bruce figure out where he's headed...the shuttle landing. As they head out, they find out that someone died and a donor liver is available. They have to get him to the hospital in just a few hours. At the shuttle landing, Ponch, Bobby, and Bruce are looking for the kid with the help of the NASA security chief. Later, Ponch asks for the help of Col. Gordon Cooper and has him ask the kid to come meet him at the press building. After he meets Col. Cooper, Ponch carries him off to a helicopter so he can go to the hospital for his transplant. After the operation, everything's fine and he's getting better. He obviously likes space stuff. 616 - "Fox Trap" (02/20/83) Briefing: Plot: Ponch and Bobby try to prevent three female rock musicians from being victimized by an unscrupulous concert promoter. Guest Stars: George Chakiris, Terry Kiser Written by: Larry Mollin Directed by: Chuck Bail 617 - "Brat Patrol" (02/27/83) Plot: Ponch and Bobby chase after car radio thieves and Ponch takes a big spill over a car and into a van. At the hospital, Bobby is pretty worried about Ponch but he comes out with just a broken left arm. Two weeks later, he's begging Getraer to let him work again. Getraer gives him light duty with the CHP Explorers (aka Brat Patrol). On patrol, Bruce witnesses a drug deal and chases after the dealer. He catches the dealer after he gets flat tires. Back at Central, Getraer chews out Bruce for doing it solo and arresting without evidence. He assigns Bruce to assist Kathy in the follow up. Meanwhile, Ponch meets the rag-tag group of kids known as the Brat Patrol. After sending them home to get in uniform, they meet the LAPD Explorers and challenge them to a race. They lose. After they finish washing all the LAPD and CHP cars, Kathy and Bruce are out looking for the drug dealer. Later on, the Brat Patrol spots guys breaking into cars. Ponch and Bobby make the bust. Back at Central, the Brat Patrol wants more and listens to the LAPD on a scanner. They're spotted by the police and returned to Ponch. Meanwhile, Bruce and Kathy bust the drug dealer. While the Brat Patrol is practicing, Ponch talks to C.T.'s mother to convince her to let C.T. stay an Explorer. When they meet the LAPD Explorers in a rematch of the relay race, Artie finishes just barely in front of the LAPD racer. Related Episode: See the sequel in "Return of the Brat Patrol". 618 - "Firepower" (03/06/83) Briefing: Weapons sales (standing at the chalkboard) Plot: Ponch, Bobby, and Webster chase an explosives truck that caused an accident. Someone in the back throws out a hand grenade which makes Webster's cruiser flip over. Ponch and Bobby go undercover as hard-core bikers to investigate at a local motorcycle grand prix that Bruce is racing at. Soon, Ponch and Bobby arrive at their third biker bar looking for the bad guys. Ponch knows the waitress and agrees to meet her to get information. Soon Ponch ends up in a small bar fight and leaves. After visiting Bruce at the track, Ponch meets the waitress at the park. The next day, Ponch and Bobby are back in uniform when a call comes in to Central from a trucker. He is forced to stop and his truck is hijacked. The truck ends up to be carrying a volitile experimental chemical called RNI. Later, Ponch and Bobby are undercover again and warn the bar owner and waitress about the danger of RNI. Ponch gets a weird feeling when one of the racers drops out and one of the bad guys joins in. Meanwhile, the waitress discovers that the bad biker guys have been storing RNI in the bar's storage room. Guest Stars: Stephen Furst Written by: Gerald Sanford Directed by: Chuck Bail 620 - "Fast Company" (03/20/83) Briefing: Ponch & Bruce's Stolen Car Plot: Officer Nelson...Bruce Nelson...and Ponch are out and spot a stolen car within Bruce's first hour as an officer. When they try to chase it, it ends up in an accident. At the briefing, we learn that that Bobby Nelson is now Kathy's partner. After the briefing, Bobby gives Bruce his lucky horseshoe keychain. Ponch and Bruce go 75 miles south to Lone Canyon to follow up on the auto theft. Meanwhile, Captain Burke drops his grandson off at Central for Sarge to babysit. At 11:30am, Ponch and Bruce find out their suspect died a few days ago. While getting ready to leave, they notice the "Zodiac twins", witnesses to a drug-related murder. While in the diner/general store, the local Sheriff claims he has a warrant for the twins. When he doesn't get them, the he impounds Ponch and Bruce's motors. Meanwhile, Sarge pawns Captain Burke's grandson off on Harlan. When Bobby and Kathy find nothing in Juniper, they head for Lone Canyon. Meanwhile, the Sheriff shoots tear gas into the general store. Ponch and Bruce escape in an old truck. The Sheriff and his posse chase the truck...but wait! Ponch is just carrying manequins! Bruce and the twins free the CHP motors while Ponch leads the Sheriff away. Ponch gets on Bruce's motor while a jeep rams the truck and then it explodes. Bruce and Ponch head back to pick up the twins and leave Lone Canyon. Bruce wants to stop when he sees a construction crew, but Ponch knows it's a trap. They start driving cross-country to get away from their guns. While Bruce fixes his broken chain, Bobby and Kathy enter Lone Canyon. Meanwhile, Harlan pawns off the Captain's little brat off on Grossie. Back in Lone Canyon, Ponch discovers that the Sheriff is in on the drug dealing (Duuh! Why else would he be after the girls?) Bruce finally fixes his chain by using the lucky horseshoe keychain. When Ponch and Bruce are on the home stretch, a plane starts buzzing them. When Ponch and Bruce drive under some telephone wires, the plane's engine stops and crash lands. Ponch arrests the Sheriff who was piloting the plane. Meanwhile, Grossie turned little Billy over to Webster...who hasn't been seen since. Sarge finds Webster tied up in his locker. The Zodiac Twins (Jeannie and Jan) agree to testify. Bruce tells Ponch he likes helping people. Ponch informs him, "it's only the beginning." (Yeah, right Ponch...two episodes left.) When they arrive, they find an accident including hot tar. She was holding the cover to a "Sea Thing" comic book. At the hospital, Bruce tells Ponch about Sea Thing just before they visit Anna. She has amnesia. Bruce and Getraer try to tell Ponch that it's just an accident and that he shouldn't worry about it anymore. Getraer is easily convinced to let Ponch uncover more. While Bobby is out checking the neighborhoods for information in the girl, he notices someone stealing a car. Ponch and Bruce join Bobby in the chase. When they catch the guy, they find Anna's wallet. Next, Ponch and Bruce go to the home of the creator of the Sea Thing to ask him about the comic book cover. He's a weird-o. Ponch and Bruce find him acting suspicious. When Anna is released from the hospital, she goes to stay with Kathy. When Anna is at Central with Kathy, Mr. Woods (the Sea Thing creator) calls Central using the nurse's voice so he can get Kathy's address. Ponch and Bruce's next stop is Elvira's comic shop. She points out that theirs is different from the original. Back at Central, Getraer is on his way home when he realizes that it's cold inside. Grossie turned on the air conditioning because his new sauna suit is hot. That night, Anna and Kathy are on the beach when Kathy gets a phone call and leaves Anna alone on the beach. As Ponch and Bruce arrive at Kathy's, Anna is being attacked by the Sea Thing. Ponch runs into the water to wrestle the Sea Thing. It gets away. The next day, Anna swears her mom's alive. Getraer agrees to dig up the body. When Ponch and Bruce visit Elvira again, she says that their cover is the real original. Later, everyone visits the morgue. Ponch helps open the casket. All that's in it is a fake head that shatters when exposed to the air. Ponch, Bobby, and Bruce search Woods' house and find nothing. At Kathy's, Anna answers the phone and believes it's her mother. She fakes getting a shower and sneaks out the window. When she goes to see her mother, she discover's it's really Woods in drag. When Ponch, Bruce, and Bobby arrive at West's, he tells the whole storyof how he locked up Anna's mom to take credit for creating the Sea Thing. When Ponch tries to arrest him, he turns out to be a hologram. The real Mr. Woods is escaping in his hearse. The CHP chases him and arrests him after the hearse rolls onto the beach. At the CHP's little party back at Central, Grossie has his sauna suit on under his uniform. Bruce suggests that he model for a new super-hero...Blimpman. Everyone has a good laugh as the credits roll. It's a good thing she doesn't have a spinal injury. After Grossie tells Ponch where the key goes to, Ponch and Bruce leave the report room to greet Anna. Someone must have bumped the set wall at that point. The lights in the well secured window move. (Or maybe it was just a very localized earthquake...) Don't you think Elvira would have better things to do than run a comic store? When Getraer puts the milk back in the fridge, the shelf breaks. When Ponch wrestles the Sea Thing, Kathy and Bruce (two trained CHP officers) just stand on the beach and watch. After Anna gets in the car with Woods acting as her mother, she doesn't run...she just cowers in the seat. That doesn't seem right. When Ponch is about to arrest Woods in his house, he turns out to be a hologram and Ponch puts his hand through him. If he isn't solid, then why can he open the door for them and make a noise when he slaps the chair? 622 - "Return of the Brat Patrol" (05/01/83) Plot: We join Getraer on his way to work. He stops to get a paper and leaves the keys in the car. Two blonde women steal it and cause an accident. When Ponch and Bruce make fun of Getraer losing his car, Getraer makes Ponch have to shape their Explorer scouts into a basketball team. At the introductions, the Explorer troop is sure that they can meet Captain Burke's challenge and beat the LAPD Explorer troop. On patrol, Bruce and Kathy chase Getraer's car but have to stop when it causes several accidents. At practice, the CHP Explorers' star player has to sit out and they get clobbered by the LAPD Explorers. Later that day, the Explorers go on patrol with Ponch looking for older kids who don't belong at a school. When the older kids threaten Artie and Roland, they don't tell Ponch about it. At basketball practice, Bobby and Bruce tell Ponch that there was a kid at the school that was mugged. That night at Ponch's apartment, one of the Explorer girls tells Ponch that her boyfriend wants her to go "all the way" with him. The next day, Carter (in a new crusier) finds Getraer's car and chases it assisted by Grossie, Bruce, Bobby, and Kathy on motors. Later, at the school, Artie and Roland call in Ponch and catch the bullies. Out on the streets, Ponch and Bruce spot Getraer's car. Getraer shows up and arrests them after the car runs out of gas. ...but they didn't put it in park and the car rolls away and gets wrecked. Later, at the basketball game, everyone is there to watch as the CHP beats the LAPD 67 to 66 in the last second. Frank Poncherello Ponch's middle name is Llewellyn (as in Doug Llewellyn of "The People's Court") and he is a graduate of Lehigh Polytechnical High School. He has brothers Robert and Martin, and a sister Patti. Robert and Martin both work for his father in Chicago. In "Flashback!" we learn that it was Jon who convinced him to join the CHP. He was commissioned in 1975 as an officer of the law. Ponch used to live in a mobile home for two years but sold it for $2625 and moved to an apartment in "Family Crisis". He planned to buy furniture, an 8 track, and a car with the money. He also used to drive his motor home around...but bought a burned out Trans Am for $83 in "Neighborhood Watch" which has been wrecked at least twice (once by Jon in "Destruction Derby" and by a forklift in "Forty Tons of Trouble"). In "Tight Fit", Ponch became "The Barcelona Man" for a jeans ad. On the beach, Ponch wears shorts ("Surf's Up") ... but he has worn Speedos on occasion. He's also an LA Rams fan. His talents include: skate boarder, street/roller hockey player, handball, racquetball, basketball, student pilot, singer, jet-skier, hang-glider, sky-diver, wind-surfer, waterskiier (he claims), demolition derby driver, square dancer, drag racer, volleyball player, chess player, and black belt in Karate. Ponch enjoys eating Tutti-frutti ice cream (although he has been known to eat strawberry in "The Strippers") and Ding Dongs ("Green Thumb Burglars"). He often takes to work a sandwich which Harlan calls a "Peanut Butter Chocolate Smoothy" ("To Your Health"). Ponch keeps junk food in a plastic bag in his saddle bag ("Name Your Price"). He also seems to have a thing for cheap cold beer. In the sixth season, his partner is Bobby Nelson...until Bruce Nelson becomes his partner in "Fast Company". Jon Baker Jon was born and raised on a ranch in Wyoming (as was Larry Wilcox). "A pretty big spread." He had a horse there named "Old Grey". It was in Wyoming that he joined the Boy Scouts. He has an older sister who was widowed. She was left alone with her son Wes ("Family Crisis"). Jon served in Vietnam (probably airborne like Larry Wilcox). After serving the CHP for many years, he returned to Wyoming to help out on his father's farm. He was replaced by Bobby Nelson. Jon's partner before Ponch was Gary Bertrom. He was 28 years old when he was killed while chasing a speeding car. Gary's brother, Pete, wanted to be a CHP but he is colorblind. Pete was arrested in "Return of the Turks" for impersonating an officer. Jon lives in an apartment building that doesn't allow pets ("Dog Gone"). He used to drive a crappy little car but got his cool blue truck for the second season. His accomplishments and talents include: being a bowling instructor, certified flight instructor, an attempt writing a book, plays handball better than Ponch, horseback rider, calf roper, wind-surfer, hang-glider, jet-skier, sky-diver, volleyball player, & talented skate boarder. Jon speaks French in "The Sheik" (but couldn't speak a word of it when he pulled over the three-wheeled car in "Hustle". He must have taken lessons.) Sgt. Joseph Getraer is a self-proclaimed "closet expert on gem stones" and beat Bonnie in the CHP chess tournament ("In The Best of Families"). He holds the track record of 47 seconds at the Malibu Grand Prix (mini-grand prix cars) (as seen in "The Poachers"). He's happily married and has a son and a daughter. A second son, "Christopher" was born later on. He served in the United States Navy attaining the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. (When Ponch asked why he never got promoted to Captain in "Aweigh We Go", Getraer sheepishly admits that his time of service ran out before he could get promoted.) Barry Baricza quit the CHP for a while to work as a crop duster for his father. He's a pilot and flight instructor. His father (who is also a crop duster) taught him how to fly. ("The Hawk and the Hunter") Baricza and Fritz won the 1976 CHP bowling tournament. Arthur Lee Grossman wanted be a policeman all his life. He is a struggling stand-up comic ("Tiger in the Streets") and a feature writer for the magazine "The Highway Patrolman". He is an expert in the rules of roller hockey. He enjoys playing chess and would have won the CHP tournament if he didn't knock over the board in "In The Best of Families". Once, he coached the CHP Central basketball team ("Home Fires Burning"). According to Grossie (and his family album), he has always been overweight (including his time in "the service" and just before he got married. (Yes...married.)) ("Crash Diet") Harlan Arliss has his mom buy his shoes because he has small feet ("Anything But The Truth") and has a talent for siphoning gasoline out of state vehicles. He also beat Getraer at chess. Grossie would have beaten him at chess if he didn't knock over the board in "In The Best of Families". Harlan has a dog named Dave. His life-long dream is to be a CHP...but he's two inches short of the height requirement. ("Peaks and Valleys") He is 5' 3 7/8" tall and when the LAPD lowered their heigh requirement, he almost became an officer (but his eyes weren't good enough). ("Fallout") Fritz won the 1976 CHP bowling tournament with Baricza. Jebediah Turner is seen at Star Trek conventions for some reason. Bonnie Clark shows off her gymnastic ability in "Karate" and taught a women's self-defense class in "Anything But the Truth". She lost to Getraer in the CHP chess tournament. Sindy Cahill knows about bio-rhythms and off-road motorcycles. Kathy Linahan lives at 153 1/2 Malibu Beach Road..."It's a guest house in the rear." ("Things That Go Creep In The Night") Bruce Penway Nelson is the younger brother of Bobby Nelson. He became Ponch's partner in "Fast Company". Steve McLeish has two brothers, including an older brother, Toro, who was "the all-time street racing champ". He also has a younger brother, Ted, who moved in with Toro after their mother died. ("The Killer Indy") He rides ATC's and is considered "athletic" by Getraer. ("Anything But The Truth") Shain can speak French. He was never a major character but has appeared (and been called by name) several times (including "Hustle"). 5) What's Jon's badge number? It's flashed at the beginning of the show. 8712 Even though they changed the opening in the 6th season when Larry Wilcox left, they still show Jon's badge. 6) The CHP seems like a bunch of goof-offs. Are they really any good? CHP Central is the highest rated highway patrol station in the state. (...according to Lieutenant Bates in "The Watch Commander") 7) Did anyone ever die on the show? There were 11 deaths in one accident in "Mait Team" An officer was killed in the line of duty in "Death Watch" A drunk guy's wife killed was in a car accident by her own husband at the end of "Wheels of Justice" A dying CHP officer dies in "Sick Leave" when after saving a girl from a car just before it explodes and sends metal into his back A fireman dies after his car explodes in "Dead Man's Riddle" 1 death in "A Simple Operation" when Getraer's roommate at the Valley General Hospital died from cardiac arrest (actually it was murder by lethal injection) A person is murdered in "Mitchell & Woods" and another drives his car off a cliff Six manequins suffered fatal injuries (according to Jon) in "The Game of War" (but we won't count those) Ponch's fiancee died in "Head Over Heels" Although the person was never seen, a liver donor died during "Journey to a Spacecraft" and saved a 10-year-old kid Total = 19 deaths! 8) Ok...so did anyone ever draw their weapon? The episodes "Peaks and Valleys" and "Karate" may be the only episodes where a CHP officer pulls his weapon. (There are a number of instances when the bad guy has a gun...so we won't count those.) Also, pay attention to the theme and you'll see Ponch's weapon in the holster. In the second 6th season version, Bruce is seen target shooting. 9) What kind of motorcycles did they ride?
