Then read what the organizers revealed exclusively to Generation. c09Generation=G c08Tcr/Greuh(main organizer)=T c09G:Why the party is called "the Return To the Source", anything connected with the fact you would like to recreate the old parties spirit? or just for the fact of the "old skool compo"? c08T:Well, I think I can say both... The first thing is that it's quite fun that RTS is $4e75 and Acronym for Return To the Source so we used this... So we called our party like that because it sounds good and reminds us of some coding stuff ("Source" can also be understood as the source code). But, of course, "Source" means also Old School, the origin of the real demo event, not just the material fact inside a disk but the whole spirit that lies around it. For me old parties spirit and Old School style on old 8/16bit computers are the same thing. The guy who made true Old School competitions can only be cool people, in my point of view; so the party spirit will be nice. Probably. I never saw an Old School fan playing Quake all the party time. Did you ? So the more people are Old School the more the party will be cool as in the old days. c09G:What is, for you, the "old school"? c08T:Uhm... I guess I've answered a little bit this question just before. The way of Abyss reminding us of Old School intros is a really good idea. But even if I like a lot old demo with sprite-bob-raster and their remake, I like the new one with a lot of 3d. But, as many have said that, demo like Rise are really far from the original concept of demo. I don't know if all the demo will be only a powerful 3d motor in the future but if it's the case it will be less interesting, so Old School is a cool way for making funny stuff. Furthermore 2D stuff as in the old days are more easy to code so it's a good thing for beginners. It's so funny to see all these productions bouncing on some sin! But this is just one side of the Old School stream. The other is, of course, the really incredible things that 8bit people can do with their computers. Pushing, all the time, the limits of the machine. Apparently nowadays the only way of pushing the limits of today computers is to print more polygones in 1 sec. Well, Old School is for me also a sort of design (or lack of design) but before everything a good old spirit making the party cooler. c09G:Are you, organizers, new in this organizing job? I mean, is it your first party? Have you all had other experiences? c08T:Not really new in organizing. I organised a lot of mini-parties for years in my little village. It's perhaps why I like Old School, these were parties with 30 people max on different computers : Amstrad, St (Do you remember the Overlanders?) , Amiga and even Mac; everybody coding in Asm! But it's the first really "big" party we are organising. After seeing the changes in the spirit of some parties, some friends and me decided that we could do one in our own way. c09G:What about the prizes? c08T:The prizes, good question. It's the first "edition" so it's hard to say how many compo or people will be there. So it's even harder to say what will the prizes exactly be. Often the prizes in parties are very nice in the invitation but at the end they are not the same at all. But I'm quite confident, I was really surprised by the number of companies that wanted to give us some prizes, the prizes will be HDs, memory scanners and stuff like that. And of course ALL THE MONEY (except for the cost of the organisation) will be shared between the winners. Honestly prizes should be really, really great for a party; in this way we hope there will be a lot of competition and motivation for the production. c09G:I have seen it's forbidden to use alcool and drugs inside the partyplace, and that's quite normal, but how will you force sceners not to smoke? c08T:We are not here to force anybody to do something. But as alcohol and drugs are forbidden, smoking is also forbidden. In France there is a law about smoking in public places. And honestly for all non-smoking people it's really better. Being surrounded by smoke during 3 days is not very good. And, anyway, we know that smokers are intelligent enough to respect the others and they have a lot of room outside the hall to smoke. c09G:Anything else? c08T:What is sure is that all the staff does its best to give you the best party possible. There is a room for up to 400 people, two nice big screens, a powerful network with Rj-45 and modem access. We also have found a nice sleeping room at 150 metres from the party place. And we try to accumulate lots of prizes for the participants just to encourage the production and avoid the massive game playing that we see more and more in parties; and of course in the tradition of the party all profits will be shared between the winners. We planned full animation during the party time, even during the night with some funny fast compos and so on. The way of voting will be also Old School, back to the old disk voting using MS-Dos formated disk with exe for Amiga, Pc, and Falcon, all on the same disk. We also encourage all our friends to come with their old computers or consoles so there will be Amstrad, Msx, C64 , V2600, to be the more universal possible and some fanatics of the emulation will also be there. But warning: we also support the new generation, there will be PPC 603/240 and PPC 604/233 available for demo compo. And some great French coders have already told me that they certainly present some astonishing PPC productions. So watch out! c08Thanks Tcr. Good luck.
