<> *4@3 PCX DEMO - REVIEW *3]5@4 by Slade / A51 *1]1 @1 This is a brand new PC emulator for the Amiga, and what an emulator it is! It has features that are not available on any other PC emulator. I am using the demo version for this review and comparing it with PC_Task Version 2. The demo is availible from: ]3 www.wildnet.blittersoft.co.uk]1 It's about 530k in size and was also on Amiga Format's cover CD. Okay, so getting the demo installed is no problem at all. A nice Commodore installer is used. Hurrah! The next step is configuring PCX so that it works properly on your system, this is fairly easy as it's all in the supplied Amigaguide manual. It involves setting up the video modes and the BIOS, the floppy and hard drives and last of all the memory. A total of 4megs can be used with the demo, and you can only have a hard drive file of 16megs. Okay, so off I went to find 16 megs of space on my hard drive and came back after a little while having deleted some stuff I didn't need. Okay, so what is the actual emulation like? Well it is much faster than PC_Task, although PC_Task is a few years old. I installed MS_DOS 6.2 onto the 16meg file partition and everything was all okay. I then installed Turbo Pascal, which I had borrowed from a mate. This ran really slow, in fact so slow that it was unusable. This is probably due to the fact that I am only using an A1200/020 with 8megs of ram. It will run a lot better on say a A1230/050 or a A4000/40, and I would love to see this running on a 060!! Next for installation was Windoze. I installed Windoze after about 3 different attempts. If you want to install Windoze then use a Bus mouse as the other type crashes the computer. It was actually quite funny, downgrading my computer and having Windozes running, although this was also very slow indeed. The emulation is very good and I must recommend the full product to any hardened Amiga owner. Even if it is just to piss off your PC friends! The best bit of the emulator, is that even on an A1200/020 it says that you have a 586SX PC, cool! Anyway, a well recommended piece of software if you use a lot of DOS based PC software! When I get round to upgrading my A1200 I will be considering purchasing the full product. Coupled with Shapeshifter, you can now have three computers in one! *4@7 SLADE RATING 8/10*1@1 This demo is twenty times better if you use the Amiga command "Addbuffers". Try 2000 on the drive where the hard drive file is. This speeds the demo up a lot. It is actually usable like this! Although the buffer will eat a lot of your memory.
