  2. Information:
  ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~

This Volume of The Ultimate Quiz takes over from Volume 1 of the game
which I coded back in 1993/4. (Now available free - contact me)

Volume 2 was first released via F1 Licenceware during 1994/5 and this
version has been slightly updated for 1998. Nothing much in there, but
I have altered all the F1 details regarding new address and probably
best of all, I have updated the music player routine. That's all :)

Volume 2 takes one step forward and has a more professional feel to it.
That's not to say that Volume 1 was poorly written !!!

However, Volume 2 has the edge with better graphics, code and design.

The game itself relies on DATA Disks for all the questions and
therefore the more DATA Disks that are released, the more games can be
  played.

  -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Please see the bottom of this text file for current DATA Disks
  available.
  -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Not to mention the fact that you can create/release your very own DATA
  Disks also.

So I guess this is one of those expandable games that everyone can
  enjoy.

I have taken into consideration that there are still some single floppy
drive users and coded the game with you in mind. Once the GAME
Disk's files are loaded, it shouldn't ever have to be replaced in the
drive ! (If all goes well that is) This caused some problems due to
Music Mods on both Game & Data disk using the same location in memory
!!! However, with some careful planning, I managed to sort it out.
I hope that keeps single drive users very happy as there is nothing
worse than having to keep swapping disks during a game.

Also note that when you reach the game over section, if you have more
than one Data Disk, you can insert a different one ! This means the
game could be played forever if enough Data Disks are released.
  Yippeeee.

I hope you have many hours, nay, months, years of enjoyment out of this
production. Feel free to drop me your comments, views etc. C'mon,
  everyone's a critic !

  3. Hardware Requirements:
  ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This game should run on any Amiga with at least 1 meg of memory.
(Well you didn't expect it to run on an Atari ST did you ?)

  Fully PAL and NTSC compatible.

Will run on 1 floppy Drive systems. (better with 2 drives obviously)

Can be run from Hard Disk (You will need to use assigns - sorry !)

  eg. Assign GAME: To YourPartition:Directory
      Assign DATA: To YourPartition:Directory

Copy all files to required Directories.

NTSC users will also notice a speed up with most features of the game
such as Timer and Music speed etc. Sorry but this game was
originally coded with PAL (British) users in mind. The speed
increase on NTSC will not spoil the game in any way at all as the Timer
is still long enough to give you time to answer the questions.
(Either that or you can always switch it off via the options)

NB * : Please note that the game does not require any extra Libraries
or Dos files to run. However, ALL the supplied Quiz Utilities
such as the QB_Player, all require the Req.Library to be present
in your systems Libs Directory. (You will be greeted with a
nice WB reminder if it is missing when attempting to use any of
         the utils).

The game will not promote itself to any screen modes either :(
Sorry, but it was programmed years ago and needs to be
displayed in PAL/NTSC modes only! (SVGA - sorry guys `n' gals-
buy a box such as the TV Amazing or any scan doubler.)

  -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  4. Loading Instructions:
  ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This game and supplied utils can either be loaded via the WBench by
double clicking on their supplied Icons or simply from CLI or SHELL by
typing in the correct path and file name.

Please note that the disks must be named as GAME and DATA before the
game will run 100%. Do NOT rename the disks or files.

The game will look for the DATA disk automatically and if you are a
single floppy drive user, you will be prompted to insert the correct
  disk.

Double floppy drive owners have life easy ! Just insert the GAME
disk into DF0: and the DATA disk into DF1:

  -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  5. Playing Instructions:
  ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well what can I say ? Just plug in your Joystick and away you go !!!

O.K. Then ..... here comes a few details:

When the game loads you will be presented first with the options screen
from there you can select/toggle these options:

START GAME - Simply Starts the Game.
  TIMER - Toggle Timer On/Off.
CREDITS - Toggle amount of playing Credits. (1, 2 or 3)
SAVE SCORES - Enable/Disable saving of HiScores to (DATA) disk.
QUICK HELP - Quick Instructions and Information.
QUIT GAME - Quit Back To Shell Or WBench.

Simply move your Joystick Up/Down and press Fire to select an option.

Please note that if you decide to enable the saving of HiScores to
disk, your DATA disk must be write enabled. If it is write protected
then the scores will not be saved obviously.

The other options are easy to follow, so I won't bother to bore you
with any more advice on them.

Right, you have selected START and into the game we go ......

  (STARTING A GAME)
  -----------------
You will notice that the START button is flashing and the Hand pointer
is limited to that button only.

To display the questions - Press the Fire Button when the START Button
  is flashing.

A question & three answer options will now appear on the screen.
Along with the sexy Sue sprite moving her mouth in time to the
questions and answers being printed on-screen !

The START button will stop flashing and the A, B and C buttons will
light up with their own colours now. The Hand pointer will
automatically be positioned (and limited) to the A, B and C buttons.

You will notice that the three answer options are colour coded to match
the A,B and C Buttons at the bottom of the screen.

You can now select your answer by moving the joystick left and right
until the Hand pointer is over your choice of answer. Simply press
the Fire button to select it.

  (THE TIMER)
  -----------
If this option is enabled (via the main option screen):

The Timer Bar will start to scroll away AFTER the question and three
answers have been printed on screen.

This gives you time to read the question before countdown begins.

The Timer will stop when you have either run out of time or if you
select A, B or C by pressing the Fire Button.

You will then be told on-screen whether you have answered correctly,
wrongly or if you ran out of time.

If on the other hand you disabled the Timer option, you will have as
much time as you wish to answer each question. Instead of the Timer,
you will see a famous person's name instead ! (mine hehehehe)

  (SCORING)
  ---------
Credits are displayed as £'s on the game screen.

  eg. 3 Credits = 30 pence.

The less Credits you have - the harder the game will be !

  You start each game with:

  £ 0.00 Score
£ 0.30 Credits (or maybe less if you changed the CREDIT option)

If you answer a question correctly, you will gain 10 pence onto your
score. You will also light up one of the BONUS ROUND letters in the
top right of the screen (randomly). You will also get a nice smile
  from sexy Sue ! :)

If you manage to answer 10 questions in-a-row correctly then you will
  enter the BONUS ROUND.

If you answer a question wrongly, you will lose 1 credit ! (10
pence) You will also lose any BONUS ROUND letters that you managed to
light up! (You need 10 correct answers in-a-row to reach the bonus)
A frown from Sue shows that she is unhappy with your performance ! :(

If the Timer is enabled and runs out, you also lose 1 precious credit !
You will also lose any BONUS ROUND letters that you managed to light up
(You need 10 correct answers in-a-row to reach the bonus) Another frown
  from Sue ! :(

If you run out of Credits, then it's GAME OVER I'm afraid !

Yet another frown from sexy Sue in the corner ! :(

  (BONUS ROUND)
  -------------
If you managed to answer 10 questions correctly in-a-row, you will have
lit up all the BONUS ROUND letters on the top right hand side of the
  screen.

The Hand pointer will now be positioned over the BONUS button which
will now be lit up also.

You will see some money randomly flashing on the screen !

Try and get as much as you can by pressing the Fire Button on your
Stick Of Joy !!! (The idea behind the BONUS ROUND flashing money
looks a bit like the BONUS SQUARES on the popular t.v. programme,
  Catchphrase ! - It's a good guess - but you're not right ! Pick a
  Bonus Square !)

You will also be automatically rewarded with an extra Credit for your
hard work ! (Only a total of 9 Credits is permitted)

Your Total Bonus Points will be added to your Final Score when the game
  is over.

  (GAME OVER/HiSCORE)
  -------------------
If you run out of Credits you will be presented with the Game Over
  screen.

You will be told of how much points (money) you have along with the
total amount of Bonus Points. You will also be informed of how many
questions you answered correctly/wrongly !!! (big deal !)

If you have reached a new HiScore you will be prompted to enter your
  name via the Joystick !

Just move the Joystick Left/Right/Up/Down to position the square over
the letter of your choice and press Fire to select it.

Up to 15 characters can be selected for your name and if you make a
mistake you simply select the DEL character with the Fire button.

When you have finished entering your name, simply select the END
character by pressing the Fire button.

Now sit back and watch the Top Ten HiScores wrap around in a neat
  scrolly kind of fashion !!!

If you enabled the Save HiScores to disk and your DATA disk is write -
enabled, your new HiScore will be saved. Don't worry if your DATA
disk is not in the drive as you will be prompted to insert it.

If your DATA disk is write protected, you will be prompted by a sexy
WBench requestor telling you so. You can click on Cancel and your
scores won't be saved. (Obviously the game won't crash as I've error
trapped the code to deal with this). Alternatively, you could write
enable the disk and click on Retry to save 'em. It's up to you.
Better still, if you don't want to save your scores, set the option on
the intro to disable them from being written to disk !!! Silly ass! :)

That's it then ! If you want another game, simply press Fire and the
files on the DATA disk will be reloaded ready for a new game. At
this point, if you have another DATA Disk, insert that instead if you
  wish!

This way you can play a different DATA Disk set of questions every time
you reach GAME OVER ! Did I think of everything or what ? :)

  (QUESTIONS)
The five question blocks on the DATA disk are loaded in randomly each
time you begin a new game. So chances are that you will get to play
a different question block with each new game. This saves you
getting bored playing the same block all the time.

Each block has 100 questions for you to attempt. Each question is
picked at random. This means you won't ever play them in the same
order any time you play. This gives the game a longer lasting appeal
  I think.

If you manage to answer all 100 questions in any block, a new block
will be automatically loaded (randomly) for you to attempt the next 100

If you are really good and have managed to answer ALL 500 questions,
then I would suggest that you try playing the game with only 1 Credit
and also enable the Timer. Let's see you do it now ! ;^)

If you are still too good and can answer all 500 questions easily, then
it's time for you to order a new DATA disk - or create your very own !
(full instructions can be found in another doc file on this disk)

Either that or you will have to play the same 500 again. (Randomly)

If you are really good, then you will see some cheeky messages
on-screen. These are also chosen randomly and are just to add a bit
of fun to the game - I hope they bring a smile to your face once in a
  while ! ;) (20 Random messages)

If you don't press START you will see a small scrolly message telling
you to "Hurry Up !". Again, this is just to add some amusement ;-)
  (15 Random messages)

  (THE END)
  That's basically it !

Click on START when its flashing to play the next question.
Click on A,B or C to answer it.
Watch out for the Timer (if enabled).
  Watch out for your Credits.
Try and reach the Bonus Round by answering 10 in-a-row correctly.
Try and reach a new HiScore.

Good luck ! (but) Most of all .... have loads of fun !
Oh! Don't forget to get a grown up to help you with the tricky bits !

Removed references to Data Disks as they will be FREE! soon.
Updated the music player in the code so it can play better mods
now. This should help anyone creating a Data disk of their own.
That's all. There was other stuff planned, but I opted not to
bother as people who bought previous versions may get a bit
peed off if this one was to be far superior :þ (trust me)

To Do - Well, I had planned to add features which allowed loading and
playing of ALL data disks from screen options, and also an
option to load/play Ult Quiz 1 question banks too.
Alas, I do not have the time to spend on this old code though!

I'm afraid I don't think I'll do much more with it.

If anyone feels they want the code, email me and we'll talk
          about a price :) andy@agasinc.demon.co.uk
