=============================================================================  POLICE QUEST III - THE KINDRED ============================================================================= A few notes before I begin the solution of this truly brilliant game: -Some things in the game happen at a random moment and they can diver from time to time. In the following solution, I will desrcibe the game the way I played it and the way things happened to me. I hope you will be able to work with it during your game. -I will not describe the routes you have to travel by car to get from one place to another. Enclosed with the game is a map of Lytton City. Use this to find the locations described in the solution. Have fun. Day 1 Sonny Bonds, just promoted to sergeant, steps out of the elevator on the 2nd floor. It's been a long time since he dealt with Jessie Bains and got married to Marie, the woman he had rescued from that evil man's hands. Life has been pretty quiet since and Sonny's back at the traffic department, due to a shortage of people in that division. He enters his office on the left and notices a form in his In/Out basket. He takes it [1]. It's about a complaint against a fellow officer, Pat Morales. Bonds leaves the office and walks to the east of the hallway. He enters the briefing room and talks to Morales twice [1] to tell her to get to his office after the briefing. Then he removes the clipboard from the stand [1] and starts to talk. When the briefing is over, he gets back to his office where he finds Morales waiting. He talks to her and she explains the situation. Knowing that there have been several problems with her he sustains the complaint [5] and puts the form in the lieutenant's basket. He removes the requisition form from his own one [1] and goes to the 1st floor of the building. From the storage closet he takes a handful of batteries [5] and some flares [3]. Then he enters the men's locker room and opens his own locker by entering the code 776 which he had written down in his police manual that came with the game [1]. He takes the flashlight [1], the notebook [1] and the nightstick [1] and goes to the 3rd floor. He gives the requisition form to Mike Downs [4], thus receiving a computer access card, which he takes from the desk [1]. He goes back to his office on the 2nd floor where he hears the message to call dispatch. He picks up the phone, presses the dispatch-button and learns that he has to go to Aspen Falls. He stands up, goes to the ground floor and gets into the patrol car. When he's arrived at Aspen Falls, he talks to the woman with the child and then heads east to meet the deranged guy that's standing near the water. He tries to talk to the man, but seeing that this won't work he walks over to him. The man attics Bonds, rips the badge from his jacket and throws it into the water. Sonny then searches the man's clothes and discovers a license and some keys [2]. He throws the keys into the water [3], causing the mad man to get furious and attack him. He quickly takes his nightstick and hits the guy on the back of his head [5]. He falls to the ground. Bonds cuffs him [5] and leads him back to the car. Here he searches the man and discovers a knife in the little clothes he's wearing [5]. They both enter the car and drive back to the station. Sonny puts his gun in one of the lockers [2] and enters the jail. Het puts the suspect's knife [2] and license [2] in the drawer and opens the door. The penal code is 12025, carrying a concealed weapon [1]. He removes his cuffs, leaves the jail, gets his gun [1] and enters his car. He drives to the freeway where he finds Morales and a vehicle standing on the side of the road. He talks to Pat and then to the woman [2]. He tells Morales that he'll sign for the woman's incapability to sign a ticket [5] and enters his car. A little bit further he encouters a car that's driving far to slow in the fast lane. He puts on his siren. The car pulls over and Bonds walks around the car, to the driver. He talks to him, asking for the man's license. He goes back to his car, inserts the license in the computer and fills in a form 900. The time: 1739 and the vehicle code: 21654, driving too slow [5]. He takes the ticket, gets out and hands it to the driver. This little scene will probably have a tail in court. After driving for a little while Sonny sees a black car, driving way to fast. He looks at the vehicle ID of this car and uses his computer to look to whom this car registered. He sees that it belongs to a cop. Maybe he is chasing a drug dealer! He'd better let him go [5] so Bonds drives on [5]. He encounters another speed demon and this one's no cop. He performs the same procedure as he did with the slow-driver, except for two things. The time is now 1905 and the vehicle code 22349, driving too fast [5]. With this business taken care of, he cruises the road again. At a certain moment he notices a car weaving across the freeway. He gets the guy to pull over and talks to him twice, making him perform a soberness-test [2]. This man is definately a danger on the road. So Bonds decides to take him to jail. He cuffs him [5], they both enter the car and drive off to the station. He puts his gun in the locker and they enter the jail. He removes the cuffs, He administers a breath test [5] and he lets the man empty his pockets and books him for vehicle code 23152 [5], drunk driving. He removes his gun from the locker and goes back to his office. Here he gets another message. He picks up the phone, calls dispatch and drives to Oak Tree Mall. He feels as if something has just torn his heart in two. Seeing Marie lying motionless in the ambulance makes him realise the everything, even his happy life with his wife, can be brutally destroyed by the evil phantom that strikes all over the world, called crime. He takes the golden chain out of Marie's hand [5]. He talks to the two men twice and they take him to the hospital. He speaks to Marie, swearing to nail the people responsible. Back at the scene of the crime he talks to the reporter [3] and puts the batteries in his flashlight [2]. He turns it on, and when he looks close on the ground at the left side of the car he sees a gold object. He picks it up [5] and turns off his flashlight. He heads home. Day 2 The next morning he sees Marie's musicbox standing in the closet and decides to take it with him [5]. He knows how much she loves the thing and maybe it will be able to get her out of her coma. At the office, on the 2nd floor, he enters the homicide office and talks to his boss a couple of times until the man starts to repeat himself. Then Sonny goes back to the Mall. On the ground, on the place where Marie's car stood yesterday, he notices an object. He takes it. It's a bronze star, probably once part of the neckchain they found in Marie's hand. Seeing there's no more to be found, he heads back to the station. Here he enters the evidence lockup and hands over the bronze star [5]. Case number is 199144. He also gives the officer the neckchain and has it stored under the same number. In his office (that's homicide now). He phones the reporter (555-0707) [5] and inserts his access card into the computer. He reviews the cases 199144 and 199137. He also checks out the serial number from the star (09987) [5] and discovers another connected murder case. He reviews it (199124) and notices a macabre connection between it and case 199137. Both victims had a pentagram engraved in them after they'd been murdered! This could become a very scary case. Bonds shivers, turns off the computer and goes to the hospital. He buys a rose [5] and asks the receptionist for Marie's room number [1]. Then he enters the elevator. He gives Marie the rose [5] and her musicbox [5]. She appears the react a little. He talks to her, kisses her [10] and leaves. Day 3 In his office Sonny takes the message [1]. He drives to 325 South 2nd Street. This place sure is a mess. He wakes up the lady that's sleeping underneath the paper and show her his badge [3]. She won't come unless her cart is safe. Cleverly Bonds cuffs the thing to the pipe in the ground [5] and they drive to the station. He talks to her three times and grabs the lunchbag that's on Earl's desk [5]. She eats and finally starts to talk. Sonny turns on the computer, inserting the card and goes to the Drawing Composite Tools. He composes the face the woman describes and lets the computer search for a matching picture of a known criminal. The man's identified [20] as Steve Rocklin. Sonny talks to Carla and takes her back home. He retrieves his cuffs [2] and drives to the mall. Waiting for Pat, he decides to enter the Army building. When the guy tries to talk him into an army carreer he shows him his badge [3] to make it clear he already has a job serving the public. He goes back to the car and thus ends another shift. Day 4 Back in his office Bonds takes the subpoena [1] and goes to the third floor. He sais HI to Mike and after taking the tracking device out of Mike's cabinet [5] he goes to the garage. From the glove compartment of the patrol car he takes the charts [5]. He enters the unmarked car and drives to court. At the bench he talks to the D.A. twice and hands him the chart [3]. Ruiz has lost his case. When Pat has asked Sonny to drive to the mall again, she leaves her purse in the car. Wanting to find out what his partner is up to, Bonds takes her key [5], has it copied at Zak's [5] and returns it [1] before Morales gets back. Dispatch informs them to go to 300 West Rose. Here Sonny removes his tools from the trunk and walks over to the damaged white car. He looks at it and discovers some gold paint on it which he takes using the scraper [5]. Then he has a look at the body in the container and looks at his hands. He removes some blood and hair with a toothpick [5]. and searches the body [5], discovering only a license. He removes the shirt. Another pentagram. This is getting out of hand. He makes a note of the penta- gram in his notebook [5], he puts the tools back in the trunk and drives to the station. He books both plastic bags under case number 199145 [10] and goes to his office. Using the copied key he opens Morales' desk and finds a code: 386 [10]. That has to be her locker number. He takes the message from his basket [1] and goes to the hospital. In Marie's room he looks at the chart on the back of her bed. Then he looks at the IV meter. Something's definately wrong, so he presses the call-button. He kisses Marie and talks to the nurse when she arrives [15]. When all's been taken care off, Sonny heads home. Day 5 On the 2nd floor he goes to the east of the hallway and enters the psychologist's office. He reads the file about Morales [5] which adds a little more suspicion against her. In his office Bonds talks to Hanks and looks at a memo on the wall [3] and turns on the computer. Using Evidence analyses on case 199145 he sees that the suspect car is G.M sedan 1976. He calls Dispatch and requests they broadcast a b.o.l (Be On Look- out) [5]. After this he starts plotting the murder locations on the city map: -392 South 6th Street -280 West Palm -341 East Rose -376 West Rose Wait a minute, this looks just like.......a pentagram. All it needs is a fifth location somewhere near 200 East Palm. He plots it and draws lines between the points connecting all of them to each other [10]. Exactly a pentagram. No time to lose. He gets in his car and drives to 200 East Palm. Sonny looks at the car. That's it alright. He puts his tracking device on the car [10] and enters the Old Nugget and waits for the pooler's partner to show up. That's him. Suddenly the guy pulls out his gun and shoots at Bonds. He fires back [5] and the man flees. Sonny and Pat follow him in the car using the tracker [5] and finally find him on the freeway. Bonds puts down the flares [5] and talks to Leon. Then he looks at Rocklin and takes the keys from the ignition. He opens the trunk with it and.....5 packages of cocaine. He takes them [5] and drives back to the station. At his office he takes the note [1] and he goes to the hospital. After his visit to Marie he goes home. Day 6 In his office Sonny talks to his boss. He goes to the 1st floor and enters the men's locker room. He takes the toilet paper and puts it in the toilet [2]. he talks to the janitor [3] and enters the women's locker room. Using the code 386 he opens Morales locker [10] and discovers what he's been affraid for. He takes notes and goes back to the office to talk to the boss [5]. Then he heads off to the coroner. He enters the building, takes the envelope [2] and opens it. He opens he middle drawer in the top row and reads the name tag. When Leon's gone he leaves too and drives to the hospital. Here he gives Marie the locket and leaves again. At 500 West Peach (Rocklin's former address) he takes his tools from the trunk, talks to the fire chief and enters the building. He takes the photo that's lying on the floor [5]. His heart starts to pound intensely. A picture of Jessie Bains with his brother Michael! So Michael's probably the leading figure in this operation. On the photograph he sees the address 522 West Palm. That's probably the crackhouse from which they operate! In the next room Sonny scrapes some blood off the floor [5] and leaves. At the mall he shows the photo to the recruting officer in the army building. He shows his badge [3] and the photo of the Bains brothers and he gets a printout of Bains' military past. He takes it [3] and goes back to the station. He shows the printout to the psychologist [5] and goes to 522 West Palm. Sonny knocks on the door, but no one opens [10]. He goes to court and talks to judge Simpson. He shows her the photograph and the newspaper clipping [3]. Then he takes the warrant and goes back to the crackhouse. He knocks, but still no answer [5]. Back to the judge. He takes the court order [5] and goes to 522 West Palm again. Now that should be enough to get in. Sonny draws his gun and gets into position. Once inside he shoots the guy that comes rolling form the left [10]. Michael Bains surrenders and Sonny cuffs him [5]. Underneath the sofa cushion he finds the tv's remote control [5] . Just randomly pressing button 8 he suddenly sees the fireplace starting to open [5]. This has to be the secret drugs laboratory. He enters it, but finds no one. Just when he wants to exit the room he hears someone coming up from behind. He quickly turns around and shoots the guy just in time [10]. Morales walks to the man and suddenly points his gun at Sonny. Just in time an agent from internal affairs arrives to shoot her and save Bonds' life. And thus ends the third chapter in the exciting Police Quest Series.
