@2 F O R T R E S S I I S P E C I A L R E L E A S E @1 Final Part @3 Created by Lee Bamber @4 Well, read it and weap fellow programmers. Fortress II has reached the end of it's long journey. Though the final encarnation is way below standard, it's available to you. Right now. Right away. ON THIS ISSUE!! @5 From commercial, to publication, to licenceware and backwards, the resting place of F2 will now rest limbotically in the hands of the free market. It is with a sense of loss than I must severe ties with my long standing games and the NEW coorindators of Digital Ninja are not as good as me, and to put F2 in their laps would be cruel and wasteful. Instead, Fortress II shall be a gift to you, courtesy of a passing traveller. Poetic though it may be but I must move on now, and for me to leave my foundatory bridges in tact, I don't wish to inscribe myself in anyones bad books. So F2 is free, to be ripped apart and used for your own schemes, and dreams... @3 For reasons explained elsewhere in this issue, I cannot develop any new software and it is with reluctance that control of Digital Ninja be passed to my immediate team members. It is true also that I won't have much time to respond as quickly and 'lengthy' as I once enjoyed to you because of the amount of work I now have. For Fortress II problems, it is up to you and your use of the extensive inter-program documentation. I'm regretably not able to help in any big way. @4 The Fortress code is practically finished...Things like enemy armies and enemy attacks, etc are not coded, but the programs current features do support the results from an enemy attack, retreat, defence, etc...If anyone wishes to finish and market Fortress II, only a mention of it's origin is nessesary (i.e. The Digital Ninja logo is clearly communicated). Because of the Digital Ninja standard, it is increasingly difficult to release sub-standard software, and Fortress II, though very impressive, does not qualify as a complete DN game. So the banner is passed to anyone who wishes to explore, extend and experience the world of Fortress II... @5 If you want exclusive development of it, write and inform me of your intent and if anyone else desires the same, I'll let the two parties sort it out, leaving me out of it. @7 THE SOFTWARE @5 In this issue of AMOSZine, you will find the source code and associated files in the directory 'FortressII'. Running the uncompiled program will @5result in a barely playable interface, and so compiled testing is highly recommended. @3 The controls are as follows: @1 SPACE - Display Status a) Money held b) Current Day/Hour LEFT MOUSE BUTTON - Select a game item RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON - Depressed and held allows scrolling to other parts of the map CURSOR KEYS - Allow slow (and bugged-never intended for final release) scrolling in respective direction for gradual monitoring. @4 Though there is much in the game you can be getting on with, you will find your progress will be halted by undefeatable enemy settlements. It is for this reason the 'Fortress II World Editor' is supplied. One of the most user friendly 'programmer editors' Digital Ninja will ever produce. It is designed to allow the shaping of worlds, setting of towns and forts, make paths and smeg knows what else...As long as you use the file Jarah to start with, your worlds will be immediately loaded into the main Fortress game to play and your leasure. @5Remember again, all this is free so no complaining. So work out how the paths work, and the indexes, and the rest. Consult the program code and see exactly how the data is used. @1 Well, there's alot of good techniques in here, and some nifty little ideas. The screen update is pretty old, and with abit of hindsight, I would choose icons rather than bobs, but that's just my early apology for old code. It was started a while back you know! @4 I imagine with alot of code understanding, and alittle hands on coding, you could fashion a very convincing game out of this. What an opportunity, and a realistic one if you're a good coder. @3 Not the way you wanted it to end. But certainly not the worst outcome. I imagine you'd like to play everything you've been reading about so much. Much worse would it have been if I'd just disappeared into my new job and left you in the lurch. Consider it a bribe...something for you to accept in exchange for alittle room for some new faces to replace my altogether potent personality. For the wouldbe conquerers, you'll get your battle. For the coders, you'll get some damn complicated code to test ya. For the mildly curious, just another nugget of interest as the lines of text fade all too quickly into the untapped corners of your memory. @4 I bid a farwell to the knights and rogues of the realm of Fortress II, and leave thee free to ply the craft of Lee Bamber, where-ever he may be... @5 I DON'T BELIEVE IT !!! (As Andy Smith would say !) Lee (I've gone compleeeeetly mad) Bamber has just given away Fortress II to all you lucky Amoszine readers - for free ! Not only that, but it's the full Amos Source Code ! What is he on? Nice one Lee. You have made this issue of Az one of the best buys ever (in my view). I'm sure many Az readers would like to thank you for this contribution. (Thanx Lee - reader's voices) - hehehehe! :) Now all we need is the code to Relics .... See ya next time m8. - @1Andy Gibson
