           Newsflash Product Review: International Soccer Challenge

  A while ago Microprose issued claims  of  an innotive approach to computer
  soccer by planning a 3D game viewed as  if  you were on the field of play.
  At last this is now available, there's  no doubting that the game is quite
  clever in it's graphical representation  but  does it contain that magical
  element to knock the most solid parrot of all, Kick Off2, from it's perch?

  Nah. No-way. Niet. No. Sod off.

  Unfortunatly the game just doesn't live up  to the promise and you're left
  with a game that's  quite  difficult  to  play  and confusing. No 2-player
  option hardly helps especially as this is what makes Kick Off 2 so good, I
  don't think there's a better game-playing experience than playing Kick Off
  2 in a league with some mates and a few cans of the good stuff.

  Sadly any realism factors are right out  of the window and even the keeper
  leaps about 2 metres in the  air  to  fall  majestically on a ball rolling
  softly towards goal.

  The graphics are undeniably clever but it  just fails to work, movement is
  slow and at times its hard to know who  you are in control of and the shot
  & passing options seem very limited. The 3d intro animation where the view
  pans down on the stadium is  neat  and  also the player-animation is good,
  although when they're standing  still  they  look like naughty schoolboys.
  (Well they did to me)

  Sound is limited to some pathetic, feeble ditties which do the ZX81 little
  justice - let alone a 4-channel  stereo  Amiga! You get the brief applause
  when you kick off and of course the odd phweep! from the ref's whistle.

  Summary: The game offers little new to  a scene dominated by Kick Off2 and
  in that respect I can find little to reccomend it if you already have Kick
  Off. If the only game  you've  got  is  Grandslam's Peter Beardsley Soccer
  though you might well be  interested.  Bad,  but  not THAT bad. Tipped for
  relegation...

  Ratings:

  Graphics:       85%    Actually good, let down by speed.
  Sound:          25%    Average effects, lousy music.
  Gameplay:       40%    Yellow Card for this offence.
  Overall:        45%    Disapointing result. Almost as bad as Sheff Utd.
