BOARDWALK... ------------ Lately I havent been on my modem so much which has been caused by the fact that its been sat in the office, also the fact that at night I have been in the local pub more than I have been sat in front of my Amiga... The main two boards I have been walking down lately are the CRUSADERS bbs and The Bitmap Brothers BBS (this one needs no introduction!) The Crusaders BBS is a Norwegian bulletin board and is believed to be the biggest and best in Scandinavia. Run mainly by a programmer and a musician (Dr Outtasight and Dr Awesome) the board contains many good utilities and has a large assortment of musical goodies. The Bitmap board is a general purpose board for AMIGA/ST/IBM (the machines the guys write games for!) and features the usual PD/Shareware sections, demo section, Message sections and even a Kylie Minogue fan club (although the contents are a little dubious.. thank god the guys have some taste..) I've started using Micronet alot recently due to the start of the soccer season and its nice to get the latest news and reviews even if they don't cover Division 2 particularly well (pah!) never mind.. A guide around the Bitmaps board now follows... O| _____ _____ _____ ___ ____ _____ | / / / / / / \ / \ / / Goes Walkabout on.. O| /_____ /____/ /____/ / / / __ /____ / | / / / / / / / / / / BITMAP BRO's BBS... O| _____/ / / / /____/ \____/ /____ . | O| | The Bitmap Brothers are famous for their Xenon Games and the O| highly succesful 'Speedball'.. they also run a bulletin board | What lurks there? Whats happening down at the Bitmaps? O| Follow yer Uncle Spadge and see! | O| ========================================================================== The Bitmaps BBS is run by Mike Montgomery, one of the now legendery Bitmap Brothers.. responsible for the programs Xenon, Speedball and Xenon II.. truly three programs that played important parts in the development of 16bit software.. if you havent got Xenon II.. BUY IT! It is awesome.. Anyway enough of the plugs and adverts.. time to have a quick look around the board, what it offers etc.. here we go... A fair amount of quality PD is available although not quite as much as there is on other boards. * Like all BBS`s there is an option to call the sysop for a chat, i once called the board at 4:40am (thats just after dawn) and ended up chatting to Mike (the sysop).. I found it strange he was tinkering about that early in the morning.. the only reason I was up at that time was I had gone to bed early (6pm) attempting to recover from an `interview` me and the boss had in a pub that afternoon.. hard work this interviewing) * But as ever, when Im capturing data for Boardwalk the inevitable happens.. Unlike most automobiles, it has neither speedometer, nor gas gage, nor any of the numerous idiot lights which plague the modern driver. Rather, if the driver makes any mistake, a giant "?" lights up in the center of the dashboard. "The experienced driver", he says, "will usually know what's wrong." * And a message from Dr Awesome.. Subject: hi! ============ Hey Spadge ! Great to have you back here! I received your disks about a week ago - I haven't really had anything good to send back yet. I saw that you had put together sort of a compilation disk with some of my songs. Great, thanx! (Although the titles of the songs were all ***ked up). Oh - and tell Rico "BeanBag" Holmes that the "underwater" 17bit logo is the best logo I've seen in ages! Great!!!! That also goes for the cover picture on Newsflash #3 (Which Ron/UGA sent me). I tried calling both BABBS and OMEGA BBS yesterday but the line was always engaged. Do you hang out there a lot? We may hope that machines will eventually compete with men in all purely intellectual fields. But which are the best ones to start with? Many people think that a very abstract activity, like the playing of chess, would be best. It can also be maintained that it is best to provide the machine with the best sense organs that money can buy, and then teach it to understand and speak English. -- Alan M. I also totally agree with you on Kick Off being the best game for the Amiga so far. I musta spent 1000 hours playing. I bet you couldn't beat me ! I buy a game every now and then - the price here in Norway is about twice as much as in UK. :-( Bjorn. * You may have noticed one of the classic BBS symbols, i.e. :-( There are quite a few which are used to express happyness, sadness etc and humour.. Examples are: hehe (obvious) hoho (sarcastic laugh) :-) or (happy, smile etc) :-D (very happy!) :-( (sad) :-| (not bothered) There are others too, some of which I am responsible for but I`m not printing these as they are too rude.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There you go, if you fancy talking to some real nice people give this board a call, the sysops are a great laugh, speak SUPERB english (and also have a good understanding of the more diverse slang words even I use!) and have a fine range of utilities available for downloading..
