HINWEISE ZU PK-232 AUS PACKETDIGEST

THE PK-232 AS WE KNOW HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE INTERNAL BATTERIES FALLING OFF
ONTO THE BOARD, AND POSSIBLY CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE UNIT. THIS HAPPENED TO ME
THE FIRST DAY I HAD IT HOME.
bSOLUTION IS SIMPLE, JUST TAKE MASKING TAPE AND TAPE THE BATTERIES IN
PLACE.
ALSO IF YOU ARE USING THE PK-232 WITH THE IBM COMPUTER AND THE DEDICATED (AEA)
SOFTWARE, IT IS RECOMENDED THAT THE BATTERIES BE REMOVED SO THAT THERE IS NO
CONFLICT BETWEEN THE INTERNAL MEMORY AND THE PARAMETERS LOADED BY THE PROGRAM.
IF YOU HAVE 2 COMPUTERS AS I DO, AND ONE REQUIRES THE BATTERIES ON THE 232,
AND
THE OTHER DOESN'T, THEN YOU HAVE A LOGISTICAL PROBLEM. THE SOLUTION IS EASY..

BROUGHT OUT OF THE 232 THE WIRES THAT CONNECTS THE BATTERIES TO THE MAIN
BOARD,
MOUNTED THE BATTERIES ON A SMALL RADIO SHACK PLASTIC BOX, PLACED A SWITCH ON
THE BOX IN ORDER TO TURN POWER ON AND OFF TO THE MEMORY CIRCUIT, TAPED THE BOX
ON TOP OF THE PK-232, AND NOW I CAN TURN IT ON WHEN USING THE LASER 128EX
COMPUTER, AND OFF WHEN USING THE IBM-XT COMPATIBLE WITH THE AEA SOFTWARE.
IF YOU ATTEMPT TO LOAD THE AEA SOFTWARE WITH THE BATTERIES IN THE UNIT THE
RS-232 CIRCUIT WILL NOT SEE THE TNC, RESULTING IN FRUSTRATION.

AEA has announced free replacement  capacitors are
available for certain PK-232s which may have
defective capacitors at C-58 in the tone adjust circuit.
Symtoms are that you cannot hold 1200 HZ tone calibration.
The faulty part, C-58, is tiny blue, numbered 223J X7R and
located directly behind the bar-graph tuning display. The
correct capacitor is a 0.022uF NPO ceramic and is buff or yellow in
color.
Affected PK-232 serial numbers are 13,815-14,156 (but possibily
not all that sequence), 14,175-14,235,
14,261-14,600,14,614-14,710, 16,800, 16,821-17,240,
17,341-17,424. The frequency can be adjusted to 1200 Hz with the
bad capacitor, but will drift because the capacitor has the wrong
electrolyte and dielectric constant. After replacing the
capacitor, the tone-frequency potentiometers must be
readjusted: R-167 to 1200 Hz, R-165 to 2200 Hz, R-164 to 2310 Hz,
R168 to 2110 Hz. R-167 and R-168 interact. R-167 must always be adjusted
first and R-168 adjusted last. After
adjusting R-168, then readjust R-167 and then R-168 again.

Reinhold, there is a known Software Problem in the Keyboard Driver
of the DOS 3.3 System, it just disables interrupts for a too long
period of time so that overruns occur on the serial interface chip.
You may overcome this by either changing the Keyboard driver or
slow down the asynch baudrate. I have the good old KEYBGR.COM of
the prev. DOS Version in use and until now do not have problems
with either PK232 or the TNC2, all Software just runs well.
There are also some other keyboardrivers hanging around but I
don't know where to get them from, you may just try ask a freak ?
