Hello Pirates ! Now THE PERFECT CRIME releases another masterpiece, called K-Comm 2 Communications ! We know that there is another group which has stolen our original to copy it - give them a kick! Our K-Comm was the only first one and includes the instructions, which make it possible to use it. Ha ! Ha ! Ha ! And the other group "Storm" has no instructions. Okay well lets start with the instructions: Quick Users Guide for Hackers ! To get started, first of all copy the "Fonts" folder onto the Workbench disc, deleting some existing files to make space. Then double click on the K-Comm icon once on the K-Comm window. Load the modem select option from the pull down menu. In it are two pre-prepared files. One for Prestel, one for PSS, both using a Hayes compatible modem. The rest are for dumb modems and bulletin boards. To connect, just click on Log-on if you have a Hayes modem! To use your own nearest phone number, just edit the "Log-On Strings" option. It is all ready to go, so alter it as little as possible! However for the more demanding user, remember it is best to change one item only and then test - before altering the next parameter! To save a modified configuration, just quit by closing the input window! Use a 25 way flat cable plug one end and socket the other to linkt to your modem. The Amiga only needs Tx,Rx and Earth when originating, but the modem will complain if it can not handshake. Amongst its other features, K-Comm has the ability to automatically log on to a remote system, including dialling if a suitable modem is in use. It can be left to answer the phone, allowing remote file transfer. K-Comm works with all Amiga with 1/2 Meg. K-Comm settings: K-Comm saves all the settings that you make, such as baud rate and function key definitions. These settings can be stored on either on floppy or hard disk. K-Comm looks for a volume called SYS: and a directory (drawer) on that disk called S. The settings from K-Comm are stored here in three files: KCOMM.MODEM, KCOMM.STATUS and Workbench disk (usualy df0:) if you are a hard disk user. If you experience problems with K-Comm 'forgetting' the settings you yell it or the system complains that it can't find 'SYS:' then you will have to add the line assign SYS: df0: (for floppy users) or assign SYS: dh0: (for hard disk users) to your startuo-sequecne file in your S directory on your workbench disk. DEFINING TERMINAL CHARACTERISTICS K-Comm can hold information about several different terminals in memory simultaneously. To select which terminal you wish to define, select 'Select Terminal' from teh 'Terminal' menu. A diualog will pop-up, showing you the different types of terminal K-Comm knows about. Selcet one of these and cliock on OK. The features of a particular terminal configuration can be selected by choosing 'Configure Terminal' from the terminal menu, after selecting the terminal you wish to configure by following the steps above. The parameters you may alter to configure the terminal are as follows: TERMINAL DESCRIPTION This is the title you give to a particular terminal configuration and is used in the 'Select Terminal' dialog to tell K-Comm which terminal to edit. BAUD RATE This governs how fast data is transmitted and received to and from the remote system. 1200 and 300 are the most commmon for telephone based systems, with higher rates for direct connection. BITS PER CHARACTER This can be set to 7 or 8, eight is most common for bulletin board systems and 7 for many Email systems. STOP BITS 1 or 2. PARITY None, Odd or Even. Use none with 8 bit protocols such as XMODEM. HANDSHAKE None, XON/XOFF or CTS/RTS. None will bve appropriate for many situations. CTS/RTS can only be used in direct connection situatuons or where it is required/supported by both modems in use. DEBUG MODE If set to on, all incoming ASCII characters less that 32 (space) will be displayed as control characters in the form ^X (where x is any character), rather that simply being echoed to the screen. This is useful for finding out what contol characters are issed by a particular host. STRIP TOP When selceted On, the tip bit of each characterddc is stripped off to leave a 7 character represented by 7 bits, this must be set to Off for XMODEM use. CR gives LF This controls how carriage returns are displayed. If set to Yes, each CR received will be converted to a carriage return - line pair. SEND CRs This contols how CRs will be sent, if Yes then pressing the return key transmits a CR and LF, set to no, only a LF will be sent. WRAP at EOL If On, displaying a character at the end of a line causes the next character to be printed at the start of the next line. FUNCTION KEYS Text may be associated with eacht F key at the top of the Amiga keyboard. To define a F Key, select 'function keys' from the 'terminal' menu. A dialog will appear showing the carious shift keys down the left hand side. Click on the key required and then type in the F ley text at the top. Press the save button to make K-Comm remember this F key def. or another F key number to start editing a different key. Cancel exits the dialog and OK saves the currect F key being edited. RECEIVING FILES Chars received by K-Comm from a remote computer can be captured on a disk file. Either a specifically named file or a default named log file may be opened to receive incoming text. This feature can be used to download text files or create a log of an on-line session. LOG FILES To create a log file, select "Open log file" from the project menu. A file will be created on your disk called log.nnn.doc where nnn is anumber be- tween 000 and 999. Log files are useful if you want to capture text but jdo not want to spend time entering a filename. RECEIVE FILES To down-load a file from the remote system, select "Open RX File" from the project menu. Then choose a filename for the file on your Amiga with the file selector. AS the file is received it is displayed in the output window. When the file has been received, select "Close RX File" from the project menu to complete the transfer. PAUSE (LOG OR RX FILE) Data entering a file may be suspended from doing so by selecting the appropriate pause option from the project menu. Reception can be resumed by selecting the appropriate "continue" option from the project menue. FILTER TABLE You may wish some control characters to enter your log and receive files. To specify the control characters you wish to capture, select "Control Code Filter@ from the termianl menu. Click on the buttons representing the control codes you wish to keep and click on OK. These characters will then enter your receive and log files when K-Comm receives them. TRANSMITTING FILES Text files may be transmitted to remote computers trom K-Comm. SENDING A TEXT FILE "Send File", from the project menu. To stop transmitting the text file, click on the close box of the window that the file is being displayed in. SENDING A FILE: To send a file by XMODEM, selected "XMODEM Transmit". The current block being sent will be displayed in the window.
