Also, 1 Meg machines with 512K chip memory barely has the 425K continous memory needed by compress ( This is the memory requirement as far as I remember ). This means that when uncompressing 16 bit files on 1 meg machine you will have to boot with a minimum system to have enough free memory. ( You may have 700K free, but if it's 350K chip/ 350K fast, you are out of luck ). A number of friends with HDs ask me questions, and guess who has to read through manuals galore... Lastly, questions about C books have been asked/answered, but where can one order these tomes of knowledge? Local bookstores don't have much (read ANYTHING) so speak of. (I lied. one more question...) Which brings up another question: How _different_ is C for the Amiga different from C on other machines? What I am trying to spread is that there is a version of COMPRESS for the IBM mainframes running VM in a server in Belgium: TAPSERV @ BLEKUL11. If you think about it, who cares what something is called. No programmer does, right? What about the customers? Yes. They want to hear that things are new and different and improved to the point that they are called 2.0, rather than 1.4. So, it all makes sense. A lot of programs out today do just that. A-max won't work with 2.0 because it basically patches the trackdisk.device like setpatch. Commodore has fixed the trackdisk.device in 2.0(I assume). There will be a great percentage of programs that won't work with 2.0. Most of these programs will be games. Some productivity software will be lost. 2.0 WILL be a big shake up for developers using the "tricks" to get their software to run faster, better, etc... Explicit intructions of what TO use and what NOT TO use are in the ROM kernel manuals. Those developers who chose to ignore them will pay the price. I've tried to use KERMIT for file transferring myself, but i've had the same problems. THese days i use Dr.Term for communication. It works perfectly ..... THis terminal program has a KERMIT SEND/RECEIVE option (window controlled) for KERMIT compatibility. Generally one could say that Dr.term is an enhanced KERMIT program, utilizing the amiga as it should be. If you're interested I'll look for the manufacturer. (cause i don't know right now)
