Yeah, very nice. I saw one running today at the Which? show. It was running "Workbench Internal (to Commodore I presume) 36.xx", which is a very groovy rewrite. Can set WB to run in a window. The whole thing looks very Open Look (similar to the Next), with 3d effect etc. You can now list things by name, list files by icon that don't have icons, create new folders, multiple select by dragging a rectangle around.... & loads of other goodies. Preferences is split up into modules, with new stuff like: WB background pattern, number of planes (more than 2!!). Also - the workbench screen is VIRTUAL. You can set it to 1000 x 1000 pixels and when you try to move the pointer off the edge of your monitor- it scrolls!!. Properly, and very fast. Really cool. Windows now have a proper iconify gadget built in, the scrollbar arrows are put next to each other. There are standard utilities supplied for auto window activate when mouse pointer is over it and for function key definitions. That's about all I could pick up about the software from watching the guy play with it. Later, me & HALESDAP sat in on a Distributors conference - the specs & prices for the machines go something like this. Motherboards have "Video Enhancers" (read Flicker fixers) built on. There are 3 configurations at launch (yesterday) : A3000-16-40 : 68030, 68880 @ 16MHz, 40Meg hard drive. 2599 pounds (I think). A3000-25-40 : 68030, 68880 @ 25MHz, 40Meg hard drive 2999 pounds (for sure). A3000-25-100: 68030, 68882 @ 25MHz, 100Meg drive. 3299 pounds (I think). These are from my memory, so the prices aren't so definite apart from the middle one. He didn't specifically link the clock speeds to the processor, just to the co-processor: but I suppose that the two will have the same speed. Better start saving up - these look like cool machines. The case is compact, and supposed to contain 32-bit expansion slots, which are compatible with current 16-bit data paths (whatever that means). The top-dog from Commodore-UK said Unix V5.4 is coming soon. That number looks wierd to me too, but then there were a few typos in the whole presentation. They ran the A3000 against an Apollo 3500 and a SparcStation with colour monitor. They were drawing 9 space-shuttles and then zooming in, repeatedly. The A3000 was running X-Cad Pro, the others DAX CAD, whatever that is. Results - the A3000 was fastest, of course. The Apollo was very slow, but there was a light flashing on the front panel so perhaps they crippled its memory & forced it to page or something. The Sparc was slightly slower - but then it was drawing at almost twice the resolution, 1100 odd against 640 on the Amy. OTHER STUFF AT THE C= STAND: Start again: There were a couple of guys who had written an air traffic control simulator for the Civil Aviation Authority, who chose the Amiga over a Redifusion Simulators system. It runs on an A2000 with 68020, had 2 touch-screens of 1280x1xxx resolution connected to it, as well as a flicker- fixed C= monitor for the control. IE it had a dedicated graphics board to handle the touch screens output & input. It ran FAST. It took 6 blokes 9 months to write - the traffic simlulation was written by a consultant in Lattice C, the majority of the rest of the system was written in M2Sprint!!!!!, with some front end done in assembler. The M2S bit was a bit unbelievable. That guy said that it wouldn't ship till June coz of Workbench 2.0, not so in my opinion, although distributors may not get hold of them 'till then. The new software is part of AmigaDOS 2.0, NOT "Workbench 2.0", which is just part of the new operating system. There were no clues as to if it came from disc or not. The technical chap said that AmigaDOS 2.0 had been completely re-written to use C language source - so it looks like BCPL is gone forever. Oh yeah - REXX comes as standard. Well, if you really want great multimedia with sound, you can't have those crunchy 8-bit sounds! I bought a 1000 a few years back for use with MIDI, and realized that someday I might even be able to use it as a sound module on its own...but 8-bit samples sound like an AM radio compared to 12- or 16-bit sounds. I don't know if anyone out there has ever created a high-quality sampler/sound module to plug onto an Amiga, but I've never seen such a thing advertized. If anyone knows of one, please contact me. I guess memory bandwidth could easily be a limitation, but so many improvements in the video/graphics portions of the machine show that it can be done. SO, I guess Commodore is much more concerned with getting the multimedia stuff than high-performance musical instruments, which I can understand, but I think they could've reached both markets (high-quality sound is important in animations/presentations) I guess people with laser-disc controllers just put their sounds elsewhere, but my computer is nothing but a music resource (and something to balance my low budget), and I want my computer to become a good sound source! What do others think/know? Have I missed some key product announcements from either Commodore-Amiga or OEMs? You DON'T have to upgrade to the ECS if you don't want to. If you don't plan replacing your monitor to a Multisync monitor, the ECS won't do you any good except for the Agnus which will have 1MB chip RAM. ( Actually, you can get a 1280x200 screen on a normal 1081 monitor, but the dot pitch is so big that you actually see a very bad picture. This can be fixed with a __single__ wire on the motherboard. I guess part of the problem is that to sell to the corporate buyer, cheapness is actually a disadvantage -- to be taken seriously, a machine must be EXPENSIVE. By the way, my yardstick for price/performance is the Acorn Archimedes (for those who don't know it, you get a multitasking 640x512, 16 or 256 colour "Workbench" with all the features mentioned for 2.0, and seriously FAST -- 4 MIPS basic, and 500% speed-up boards available. The base model, also called A3000, has 1 Mbyte and costs about 650 UK pounds (c. $1000). The 4 Mb, 50 Mb hard disk version is about 2500 UK pounds (c. $4000) ). However as arelatively new machine the Arc does not have the software base of the Amiga. What seems to be missing in the C= announcement is useful info for the established user base; what does it actually mean to the average A500/A2000 owner? How easy/expensive is the upgrade? Do you end up still missing something (eg new video modes) ? DPaintIII worked so so, but did crash also. Excellence ran, but opened a 1080 x 800 screen of which only 640x400 was visible. Kinda gay (it worked though). I'm not really sure what the compatibility will be like. Things like DME worked, but key repeat was gone. Xoper locked up the console device (all of them, not just it's window). CBM said that the 'newer' OS will be available for both the A500 and A2000 models some time in September. The only problem that I can see with the 'new' OS on the A500, is that because the A500 doesn't have a video slot, it won't be able to use the Flicker Fixer ( Like the A3000 does.) So the A2000, will have an advantage. Also I can't see how a A500 will be used with the 31MHz (Something like that.) video output that the A3000 has. So all in all, I think the A500 will get the 'newer' Dos but like IBM your gonna start seeing stuff like +------------+ I The I I Greatest I I Game I I I I pc/xt I I 640k req. I I EGA/VGA I +------------+ In other words I think a few pro-software down the line won't be able to run on the A500. Thats why I have decided to NOT buy more memory, or a HD for my A500, and cross my fingers that the A3000 will be discounted to students so I can get one. (But I don't know what YOU use your A500 for so perhaps you may not need to let go of it, but for the stuff I want to do the A500 got my feet wet but the A3000 is my future.) BTW..... I was speaking with a Tech at a BIG Amiga dealer and he said when he saw old prototypes for the A3000, he was told original it would be a lower end A2000 without the MS-DOG stuff.... well as we all know by now it's still got the MS-DOG stuff (Although you can switch the slots to amiga.) Soooooo.... I call on CBM to give me a Amiga A1500!!! Put it inside the A3000 case, get rid of all IBM stuff... and give me a lower price lets say between $700 and $1200. And then (grining very much) give me an A1500 for my A500 deal!!! he he... I would buy this machine, how about anybody else??? I need video slots, and cpu slot , a detachable keyboard but I don't have $4000 for an A3000 ( yet....... ) I think if CBM did this THEN they could get rid of the keyboard on the A500, give it a CD-ROm and sell it as a Education/Game computer, and have the REAL dealers carry the A1500, the 'new' A2000 ( Redesign the case to match the other models.) and the A3000.
