Imported and spread by Quartex in 1988 ONE MEGABYTE RECOMMENDED Although Express Paint will run on a 512k machine, it is recommended that you have at least one megabyte of memory. One megabyte allows much larger page sizes due to the Virtual Page concept which has been implemented. The maximum page sizes listed on pages 110-111 of the User's Manual are no longer valid. The page sizes will be smaller for a 512k machine but much larger for a one megabyte machine. The maximum number of colors you can have on a high resolution (640 x 400) image with a 512k machine is four if you choose Overlays in the Startup window. You can still get a low resolution (320 x 200) image with 64 colors to come up on a 512k machine. See the sections beginning on page 21 of the 3.0 User's Manual Supplement for information regarding Virtual Pages. FONTS You will find some fonts on this disk which have not previously been distributed with Express Paint. PRINTER DRIVERS This disk was built from Workbench 1.3. In order to make room for the fonts which have been supplied on this disk, the 1.3 printer drivers have not been supplied. If you have purchased Workbench 1.3 and want to use the Express Paint disk as the Workbench disk, copy the desired printer driver to this disk with the CLI command: copy df0:devs/printers/driver to ExP:devs/printers For the above you should have your Workbench 1.3 disk in drive df0:, and you should use your printer driver's name where "driver" is specified. The printer driver you copy must be from Workbench 1.3. The version of the printer driver must match that of the printer.device file in the devs: directory. The printer.device file on the Express Paint disk is from Workbench 1.3. Printer drivers from earlier versions of Workbench 1.2 or 1.3 will not work properly. If you do not have Workbench 1.3 and would like the printer drivers that are associated with the printer.device file on the Express Paint disk, send us a blank disk requesting that the 1.3 printer drivers be copied to the disk and we will send it back to you. In order for there to be room on the Express Paint disk for your printer driver, you may need to delete some of the other files. It is recommended that you throw away the Examples drawer on the Express Paint disk once you have worked through the corresponding examples in the manual. LIBRARIES If you are using a disk other than the Express Paint disk for your Workbench disk, there are two libraries which must be copied from your Express Paint disk to your Workbench disk. These files are located in the libs: directory and are called arp.library and virtualpage.library. In order to install these files onto the current Workbench, double-click on the InstallLibraries icon on the Express Paint disk. Please read the section of the 3.0 User's Manual Supplement entitled "Libraries and Things" on pages 98-99. The InstallLibraries file (InstallLibs) can be edited with any text editor if so desired. HARD DISK INSTALLATION In order to get Express Paint to run from your hard disk, more than just the ExpressPaint program needs to be copied. Hard disk installation is explained in the Appendix on page 127 of the User's Manual. The HardDiskInstall file is provided on the ExpressPaint disk in order to make this process easier. After reading about hard disk installation in the manual, double-click on the HardDiskInstall icon to install ExpressPaint onto dh0:. If you want to install Express Paint onto a partition other than dh0:, the HardDiskInstall file (HDInstall) can be edited with any text editor. Don't forget to execute the assign command discussed in the Appendix before running Express Paint from your hard disk. It is also recommended that you place the assign command in your startup-sequence as specified in the Appendix of the User's Manual (page 127). The HardDiskInstall will also copy the two libraries discussed above to your hard drive. COLORFONTS As stated in the manual, ColorFonts do not load automatically until you run the ColorText program which is located in the Utilities drawer on the Extras disk. Please see page 89 of the 3.0 User's Manual Supplement and page 113 of the User's Manual for more information regarding ColorFonts. OTHER UTILITIES If you use many different fonts, you will be interested in the REN utility supplied in the c: directory on the Express Paint disk. Refer to page 100 of the 3.0 User's Manual Supplement for information on this utility. If you are interested in editing icons with Express Paint, see the section on the SIT utility on page 103 of the 3.0 User's Manual Supplement, as well as the sections describing how to load and save icons which begin on page 28 of the same manual. TROUBLE-SHOOTING If you have any problems running Express Paint, see the Trouble-shooting section in the 3.0 User's Manual Supplement (page 115) and "Chapter Five: Error Messages" in the User's Manual (page 119). Another useful section to review is the one entitled "Some Commonly Asked Questions" on page 119 of the 3.0 User's Manual Supplement. If you have any problems after reviewing these sections, and you cannot seem to find the answer in either of the two manuals, please feel free to give our support line a call. The phone number is (206) 694-1195. Don't forget to register Express Paint. It has been frequently upgraded. Please see the ReadMe file on the Extras disk.
