It has been carefully tested on many systens without showing up any problems. Of course the author can give no guarantee for this program running on all Amiga platforms and configuration with ROM version 37 or higher and the required programs installed. The program was developed on a PAL system, and has been tested with the Hardware set to NTSC in the bootmenu. The screen that will be opened is always 256 lines high. In NTSC the screen has the AUTOSCROLL and OSCAN_TEXT flags set, so it will open in you preferences-overscan textsize and you can scoll around with the mouse. There are no known bugs to the author, except that the display routines sometimes mess up the display a bit (in 0.01 % of all cases). The enforcer hits of the older versions seem to be gone. If you notice any bugs, or have problems with the program please send a detailed bug report to the author. DePack! opens a public screen (name : 'DePack!'), so you can open any other program with public screen support on DePack!'s screen. DePack! in todays form was developed in 8 months of more or less intensive work (5 months of intensive work, 3 were lazy business) on a Amiga 500 with a 52MB harddisk and 4 MB of memory (well unaccelerated ;) and in later stages of the program written on a Amiga 4000/40, 210 MB SCSI-hd and 10 MB or RAM: (wow... unfortunatly this is not my computer ;-). DePack! is an easy to use tool for /X sysops and traders who like to DePack! their software stored and cramped into packed files produced by archivers like 'lha', 'zoo', diskmashed with 'dms' or simply read the newest textfiles available in their BBS-directories. The basic idea is that you select a couple of files from an /X directory simply by marking them with a cursor and then perform certain operations e.g. copy them to an other directory, delete them or (and that is the main thing behind DePack!) call external commands (in form of AmigaDos executables) depending on the file type. This means that e.g. if you select an DiskMasher-file, you are asked to enter a disk and then the 'dms'-command will be called externally and the data stored in the .dms-file will be written a disk in df0:. If the file is a IFF-ILBM file you can call an external viewer and display the picture stored in the file. This whole idea was born by some member(s) of the group 'D-TECT' a long time ago. They released 'D-Tect's Deluxe DePacker', but this programm was so badly written (assembler hardcode) with so many bugs and a bad GUI that I decided to reprogram the whole thing with the following goals in my mind : a) Written in C (as I started coding C last year) b) High-Quality Graphical User Interface c) Enhanced functions and features. @endnode @node install "Installing DePack!" They concern a broad variety of settings e.g. the needed paths or if you want DePack! to react on diskchange-events while depacking the files. The preferences can be changed through two menu selections in the pre- ferences window @{" Edit Preferences " link iprefs} puts up the main prefs window @{" Mode " link mprefs} sets the mode of processing @{" Load " link lprefs} loads new settings from disk @{" Save " link sprefs} saves current settings as default @{" Save as " link aprefs} saves current settings in file You can save those settings like normal AmigaDos-preferences and load them in an later session. On startup DePack! tries to use the preferences stored in a the file 'env:DePack!.prefs'. If its not there the program switches back to its internal default settings. @endnode @node iprefs "Global Preferences" A window will open with many string gadgets in it : you can change the preferences here. To understand this you should have read the introduction of the {@"'DePack!-process'" link processing} before. The first nine boxes on the left side build the interface to the external commands. They will be used as follows. If you selected the menu-item @{" Mode/DePack! " link mprefs} . DePack! analyses the files in the source-directories their type. In 95% of all cases they can be recognised as 'DMS','LHa', ... all the other files that can't be matched need to be specified by you. Here you can determine in which way those file are treated. For every file an external command according to your preferences will be called. So you have to enter the commandlines (the ones you'd normally enter in the CLI/Shell) and replace the source name by %s, and the destination name by %d. For example if the CLI normal commandline you'd normally use from the Shell would look like this : c:dms write bbs:conf1/upload/test.dms drive=df0: the corresponding line in the preferences would be : c:dms write %s drive=%d The letters %s and %d will be replaced by the correct paths later on (see below). In the three uppermost boxes on the right side you have the possibility to enter one or more source-directories. In one of those you can specify where the files to be processed reside. DePack! will scan them in the order 1, 2, 3. NOTE : If one of the gadgets contains no string it will be considered as the current directory. This can be a little bit confusing when you scan for files not denoted (See also : @{" Files not denoted " link m_notden}. So you better set unneeded source-directory strings to NIL: The box below contains the destination directory. The %d (see above) is to be replaced by this string or, if you are in copy mode. The files will be copied to this destination-directory. Warning : If you use the directory-requester for this gadget and select e.g. df0: in the DirReq-window the reqtools.library will return the name of the disk instead of df0: (example Empty:). This can be fatal if you need to change the disks in DePack! or copy mode. So if you got to enter a DEVICE-name use the string gadget and NOT the 'Get' button. The next string gadget determine the /X-directory file to be worked on. If select a new file, it will be loaded after closing the window with the close-gadget. The last 5 gadgets can be easily operated by a file-requester if you press the button labled 'Get' next to the boxes. If the first on/off-gadget called 'Detect Diskchange' is selected DePack! will detect diskchanges when the 'Process|...|Skip|Abort'-requester is on screen and will automagically satisfy the requester if a disk is inserted in one of the drives. (Be careful !) This feature doesn't know about your destination ... this can cause unwanted writes in certain cases but normally this should be no problem. The one labeled 'Skip Unknown' tells DePack! how to react on unknown filetypes. If it is selected the program will skip this ones otherwise you will be asked to determine the file by yourself. Number three called 'Output' determines if the output of the executed program is sent to a console window or to NIL: When the last one named 'Immediate Start' is selected the processing of the files will start immediatly after you selected the menu item, so you needn't to press the 'Start/Stop'-gadget. You don't need this option, but it becomes quit handy if you scan through some textfiles etc. by selecting only one file a time. @endnode @node mprefs "Modes of operation" DePack! can distinguish between 3 modes of operation : Mode Function DePack Uses external commands like lha etc. for unpacking the sourcefiles. Eventually marked entries will be discarded after a confirmation requester. This functions performs the same operations as if you would change the dirname in the preferences requester. @endnode @node m_dirsave "Save Dirfile" This function saves current @{"Dirfile" link terminology} to a file you specify. @endnode @node m_dirread "Save Dirfile" This routine scans a directory of your choice and builds a pseudo-@{"Dirfile" link terminology} from it. Here is an example : Filename Size Filecomment dir 1233 Dir-Command list 2933 List-Command test 38882 Text-file On selecting the menu item you are asked to determine a directory via the dir-requester. Afterward you can enter a pattern the filenames must match. Example (#?.dms or #?amix#?) The dir will be read and if you want (and you usually want to) you can add the directory to the search-path list afterwards (It won't overwrite your path settings. An invisible 4th source-directory-string is used). @endnode @node m_quit "Quitting DePack!" If you select this entry you will leave the program. If there are still files to be tagged or preferences not saved you will be warned. @endnode @node m_depack "Processing the files" A window will open with three @{"Listview" link terminology} gadgets and other useful infos at the top. All files you marked will be listed in the left @{"Listview" link terminology} gadget. You can use the slider to scroll the list(s). To start processing press the 'Start/Stop'-Gadget' (left side at the bottom) If you want to return to the main window use the other button called 'Close Window'. @{b} Mode : DePack! @{ub} All the entries in the @{"Dirfile" link terminology} selected by the user will be searched in the three directories you specified in the @{"Preferences" link iprefs} section. If they are found they will be interrogated and the program tries to determine their type. If DePack! can't recognise the filetype of the file currently processed you as the user will have to enter the type manually by satisfying the requester popping up with choosing Option '1' up to '9' and thereby selecting the file-type, pressing skip to process the next file, or abort to cancel the whole operation. If the filetype has been determined (see chart below for the numbers and their meaning ...) you have four options : a) process the file and call the according command you entered in the @{"Preferences" link iprefs} window b) to skip the file and process the next one in the list c) to re-process the last file (without dropping the current file of course !) d) change the type of treatment (this is of use sometimes) or to d) Abort the whole operation. If you selected a) Process an output window will pop up and your commandline will be called with the output send to the mentioned window. This whole process is looped until the whole list of files has been processed or you selected abort. In either of the case you have the option to untag your selections afterwards by reaction on another requester. The current file's description will be displayed in the @{"Listview" link terminology} gadget called 'Current File'. After processing a file the result (e.g. 'File X copied' or 'File X not found') will be added to the @{"Listview" link terminology} entitled 'Results'. @{b} Mode : Copy @{ub} This mode will copy all files to the selected destination directory. If the destination-device is full you are asked to enter a new disk or to format a disk. This will bring up a string requester, that will ask you to enter a format commandline like you would use in the shell. (e.g. format device=rad: name=stuff) This line is saved with the preferences and will not change until you modify it in the string gadget. You can abort copying by pressing the start/stop gadget. @{b} Mode : Delete @{ub} After two confirmation requesters this function will delete all files that were found. You can abort this mode by pressing the start/stop gadget. When all files have been processed you can look at the results etc. or press the 'Close Window' button to return to the main window. @endnode @node m_deletelist "Untag items" Deletes all the file-selections you made (not the files themselves). You have to satisfy to 'Are u sure ?'-requesters to confirm the actions. @endnode @node m_search "Search for string forwards/backwards" You are asked to enter a string to be searched for. The search will be started from either the top (forwards) or the bottom (backwards) of the @{"Dirfile" link terminology} loaded. @endnode @node m_csearch "Continue search for string forwards/backwards" Continues to search for the string @{"you entered before" link m_search} (from the current cursor position in the lower (forwards) or upper (backwards) direction. @endnode @node m_highlon "Turn highlight on" This function highlights every line that contains a string you entered before. This is very useful if you e.g. want to concentrate on .dms-files : You enter : '.dms' at the string requester and every line that contains '.dms' (which is used in the filename) gets highlighted. @endnode @node m_highloff "Turn highlight off" Well ... erm ... this turns highlighting off ... Any questions left ? @endnode @node m_jumpline "Jump to line" This function asks you for a line number and then postions the cursor in that line. @endnode @node m_jumpentry "Jump to entry" This function asks you for an entry number and then postions the cursor in that line with the entry number. @endnode @node m_filter "Filter non existant files" This function will scan the three source directories for all the filenames in the @{"Dirfile" link terminology} and then remove all the entries from the directory that are not present in the source-directories. This is useful if you got many files not present and don't want them to appear in the directory-display.
