3]2.0 ROMS
     Most often asked question of people who have called JUMPDISK in the
past three months: "When will the 2.0 operating system be available for the
500 and 2000?"
     The answer from Commodore is soon. More to the point, a June 26 CATS
announcement noted the Kickstart 2.04 version 37.175 has been approved for
ROM production, and the 2.04 Workbench, Extras, AmigaFonts and Install disks
are all in near final forms. CATS, the Amiga technical branch of Commodore,
expected to have the disk sets and ROMs available to developers in mid-July.
     While this indicates the latest version of the OS is sufficiently
bulletproof to warrant a chip, it doesn't indicate a precise time it will be
avilable from your local dealer.

3]NEW TAX FOR CALIFORNIANS
     This item only applies to California residents.
     The California Legislature recently took two actions which affect
purchases made from JUMPDISK by California residents.
     First, the state sales tax rate was increased by 1.25 percent. In our
county, that translates to a 7.25 percent sales tax JUMPDISK must charge
Californians.
     Second, the legislators repealed the sales tax exemption that had been
granted periodicals such as JUMPDISK. This means, Californians, that
from now on we must charge you 7.25 percent sales tax on anything you
purchase from us -- including subscriptions.
     I can't argue with the repeal of the exemption. It's probably a vestige
of the days when newspapers and magazines had considerable political clout.
     What I do argue with is the legislators' decision that the portion of
an unfulfilled subscription after July 15 is taxable. Example: You've got 11
months of JUMPDISK plus the PDQ option left. That $82.50 worth of
unfulfilled material. So I'm supposed to send you a letter saying you owe
$5.98 sales tax.
     I think that's a jackass provision of the law.
     Accordingly, I am not going to ask California subscribers to pay
sales tax on subscriptions they paid for at a stated price in the past.
Yes, I will pay the state the total due. I already have it figured and noted
in our records. The total is a bit breathtaking.
     Beginning with subscriptions that expired with the August 1991 issue,
we're collecting sales tax of 7.25 percent.
