--------------------------------------- 3]HOW I RUN: With a Preface for Beginners --------------------------------------- This is the October 1988 issue of JUMPDISK, the original disk magazine for the Amiga. It is the 27th consecutive monthly issue. JUMPDISK requires a minimum of 512K memory to work. 3]TEXT 80, NOT 60 If you're a beginner . . . Can you see the letter X at the end of this line? -----------------> X If not, your Amiga Preferences is set for TEXT 60, while you should have it set for TEXT 80. To make the needed change: 1. Remove JUMPDISK, and restart the system with a COPY of Workbench, not the original that came with the Amiga. 2. Open the Workbench window, and in that window double-click on the Preferences icon. 3. In the Preferences window, see the characters TEXT 60 80. Click on the `80' so it changes color. 4. At right of screen, click on the word `SAVE'. This returns you to the Workbench screen. 5. Click off the Workbench window. 6. Restart JUMPDISK. 3]MARGINS AT 1 AND 80 For the print utility in the Articles Menu program to work correctly, you should set your Preferences margins for 1 and 80, rather than the defaults of 5 and 75. 3]BASIC LOADED YET? See the separate article HOW TO INSTALL BASIC ON THIS DISK. Three alternative methods are described. If you can't get one to work, try another. Basic must be installed for Basic programs on the disk to load and run. 3]DOUBLE DOCS The Articles Program leads to a menu that contains most of the text material in this issue. An effort has been made to also make documentation and notes related to programs available in the drawers holding such programs. In most cases, there is an "eye" icon ending in the suffix .Doc. Double-click this icon to see the text. This icon text system uses John Beale's Read program, which was documented in the September 1988 issue. In brief: Scroll through the text using the Up- and down-arrow keys, or click the left mouse on the slider gadget at right of screen. Escape the display by clicking the northwest corner. 3]FOR ALL NEW TO THE AMIGA The following will be helpful to the person who is new to the Amiga and not familiar with the Workbench interface: -- An icon is a picture representing a program or activity on an Amiga disk. Icons always have names in type beneath them. -- To `double-click' an icon means to put the mouse pointer over it and click the left mouse button twice rapidly. -- Some double-clicking opens drawers, which have programs and activities within them. When you finish work in a drawer, single-click the small square in its northwest corner to close it. -- If you have two disk drives, keep the Workbench disk in one and JUMPDISK in the other while running JUMPDISK. On single-drive systems, you will at times see a requester box at northwest of screen, asking you to put Workbench temporarily in the drive, then replace it with JUMPDISK. -- To read, hear or print articles, double-click the ARTICLES icon. It leads to the Article Menu, which has further instructions. Here you will find articles, as well as documentation for programs requiring it. Some articles may be found by double-clicking icons associated with program icons. And some may be accessed in both ways. -- To run a program or start an activity, double-click its icon. If you double-click a drawer, a second window opens, and you then double-click the icon(s) you find there. Drawers are not always in the characteristic drawer icon format. -- When a program is running, you may escape back to the Workbench screen by pressing the CTRL and C keys at the same time, or by selecting STOP from the pulldown RUN menu on the bar across the top of the screen. Some programs give other instructions on how to exit. -- Please do not exit a Basic program by clicking the northwest corner; this retains current palette colors when the Workbench screen returns. -- Double-click the HOUSEKEEP icon to find programs published every month to enhance JUMPDISK's usefulness: PRINTALL, SPEAKALL and READ40. -- Sometimes the Amiga uses memory and doesn't give it back. If the memory meter number on the top bar of the Workbench screen falls below 350000, some programs on this disk may signal error messages related to HEAP SPACE and MEMORY. The system may even crash. The solution is to reboot with Workbench and try again. -- To reboot means to put Workbench in DF0: and simultaneously press the CTRL key and the two keys on either side of the space bar. The latter two are red A keys on the A1000, and a Commodore symbol a black A key on other models. -- Available memory can be increased by clicking off the main J: window when you are working from a drawer, and by dragging a program or icon outside the J: window, clicking off the window, and double-clicking the program icon. There are many other activities on the disk, but their existence is either evident or instructions are given where germane, so we will leave them for your discovery. Thanks for trying JUMPDISK. 4]END OF TEXT
