HIDE THE PUMPKIN A PUZZLE CONTEST Prizes totalling $200 are offered for the best timely solutions to the Halloween puzzle program called HIDE THE PUMPKIN in this issue. These prizes will be given: $100 first prize. $50 second prize. $25 third prize. $15 fourth prize. $10 fifth prize. First, let's learn how to play the puzzle. Then the rules of entry will be covered. In the Program Menu, choose the program PUMPKIN PUZZLE. A grid of 64 squares is drawn, and 48 pumpkins appear in specific squares. To play the game, eliminate pumpkins by jumping one pumpkin over another in any diagonal direction. To jump, point the mouse pointer to the square of the pumpkin to jump and press the left mouse button, then put the pointer in the square where it will end and click the left mouse button again. Think of the pumpkins as checker pieces that can jump other pieces diagonally but can't make one-square moves. Object is low score. Current score is shown at right of the board after each move. At the northeast of the screen is an END BOX. When you have no more moves left, click within this END BOX to see a screen display of your score and the SCORE STRING which our judges will use to gauge the worthiness of your entry. You will soon discover it's possible to hop a checker over an empty square. You may do this if you wish, but our judges will ADD four points to your score each time such a move is shown in your score string. So be warned that the score shown on the screen is incorrect if you make such moves. There is a simple way of printing your score string on paper via the printer. Near the end of the program is a line beginning with the characters REM . Edit the program, erasing the word REM. When it is subsequently run, the score and score string will appear on paper and screen. To stop the program for listing and editing, choose it from the Program Menu and quickly press CTRL and C keys to stop its run before it registers the ON MOUSE routine that would otherwise break back to the Program Menu. After each game you will be asked if you wish to play again. Tap letter Y for yes, N for no. A "no" answer will return you to the JUMPDISK Program Menu. ANYONE may enter this contest. You don't have to be a JUMPDISK subscriber. To submit your entry: 1. In the upper left hand corner of a blank sheet of paper, write or type your name and full mailing address. 2. Below name and address, write your score and Score String exactly as they appear on the screen. 3. Mail your entry to JUMPDISK PUMPKIN PUZZLE, 1493 Mt. View Ave., Chico CA 95926. 4. Entries postmarked after October 31, 1986, will be ineligible for prizes. 5. The five winners will be the five entrants with the lowest scores. 6. In case of ties, winners will be determined by awarding the prize to the entrant whose entry has the earliest postmark date. 7. If tying entries have the same postmark date, winner will be determined in a random manner by the judges. 8. No one may win more than one prize. 9. Only one winner will be eligible from the same household or address. 10. One person may enter more than once, but only lowest score will be considered in the judging. 11. Winners will be announced in the December 1986 issue of JUMDISK. 12. In the unlikely event fewer than five valid entries are received, remaining prize money will be distributed among winners evenly.
