So King Lickerish has employed Epididymis the flying, trombone playing master mason with detatchable arms and a penchant for opera (thats you) to build this mighty erection. Epididymis, being skilled in the ancient lost art of Egyptian masonry can pull blocks from the ether and levitate them into position without even breaking into a sweat. Objective --------- Your objective is to build this tower and reach heaven. But heaven is very high and you only have a certain amount of bricks. Luckily King Lickerish will pay you, with more bricks, for everything you build. Some things will take LESS bricks to build than you get back, so you make a profit. Some things will take MORE bricks to build than you get back (but are non-the-less vital to your progress) and you'll make a loss. So, how many bricks you have will depend on carefully selecting the right things to build at the right time. If you run out of bricks its game over and you'll have to start again. But if you do reach Heaven then... Controls -------- Use Up/Down/Left/Right/Fire on the Title Screen (detailed later) to select/alter and choose options. In the game: ~~~~~~~~~~~~ * Left/Right - Move left and right or select an in-game option. * Up - Take off and fly. * Down - Bend down. * Fire - Karate slap (in the direction last walked) or choose an in-game option or enter a small door or pick up a key or unlock a big door. * Fire - While bending - pull up the Building Block. * Fire - While bending on the Building Block - cycle through the Building Block items. * Fire+Up - Play the trombone (to call the king, send king away or stun a goyle). * Up/Down/Left/Right and Fire are also used to size an object (see later). How To Start ------------ After loading you'll get some intro messages. Press fire to skip them (although I'm sure you'll find they're well worth seeing). You'll then be at the title screen. In the backgorund is the building currently under construction with the following options on top: (use up/down to select and fire to choose) [Setup] Goes to the setup menu where you can choose the sound that will be used in the titles and game and set the day/night cycle (this is just an effect to alter the sky). [Info] Goes to the information page. Here you use left/right to cycle through the topics (controls/how-to/characters etc.) and up/down to cycle the pages in the chosen topic. [Building options] Use left/right to cycle through: Start building or return to building. Demolishes your building. It doesn't effect the disk though so your saved building will be safe till you save over it again (see disk management). Simply displays your building, scrolling from top to bottom so you can sit back and marvel at your sheer creative genius. Use left/right to pan left & right and fire to exit. [Name] This is the name you give to your building. Press fire then enter a new name using the keyboard. How To Build ------------ When you select Build from the title for the first time Epi will appear on an empty plot of ground ready to start building. [To build] follow these steps: 1. Bend down and press fire - you'll pull up a Building Block and information will appear round the screen. The image on the building block depicts the item that you're goind to build, a wall, window, door etc. * A more detailed description of each item is listed in the in-game info. 2. Stand on the building block and bend and press fire to cycle through the items you can build till you see the one you want. 3. Stand in front of the building block and karate slap it. You can now size how big the item will be that you are going to build using up/down/left and right. 4. Press fire and you will start building. [Info] Around the edge of the screen is shown information: * The pile of bricks is how many bricks you have left (the small number is how much the thing you are going to build will cost). * The purse is how many bricks King Lickerish owes you. * The castle is the height of your building. The small number is the altitude of the Building Block, so you know how far up you building you are. * The Gargoyle shows how may gargoyles you have to build with. * The Key shows how many keys you have (to open the big doors with). [Construction Rules] What Items you can choose from the Building Block depends on where the building block is i.e. walls can not be built in front of other walls so won't be available and windows/doors can only be built on walls so won't be available if the Building Block is in the open air. You can only build if you have enough bricks i.e. if the brick counter amount is larger than what the item will cost (small numbers). Bridges must span two platforms, not stick out into empty air. If you try to build illegally, the selector will flash red to inform you. [Exit] Cycle the Building block until you get to the green arrow and karate slap it to finish building, you can now move about your building freely. Try to perform an illegal build twice in a row will have the same effect. King Lickerish and The Value Of Bricks (complicated bit) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Everything you build COST's a ceratain amount of bricks. But, as a finished article it has a VALUE of so many bricks i.e. what the King will pay you for it. So you might build a wall and lose 100 bricks, but the king will pay you 200 for it. This is the object's COST and RETURN. Some things have low cost and high return, some high cost and low/no return (but are still essential to your progress). * A list of each object and its cost/return ratio is available in the in-game info section. Whenever you build, the cost is deducted from your bricks and the value added to the Kings Purse. The Kings Purse is your wages, but can only be collected and used when you call the king. At certain altitudes the Purse will have a red flash. Now you can blow your trombone and the King will appear. Karate slap him to take money from the purse and add it to your bricks. Blow your trombone again and the king will go away again. And thats the tricky part: To collect your winnings you first have to get high enough to call the king, so you have to choose what you build wisely to start with. (It wasn't that complicated was it?) Magic Doors ----------- This is a way of moving more rapidly about your building. Build two or more doors. Enter one by pressing fire then hold down up/down/left or right and you'll emerge from the nearest door in that direction. If you space them out you can get to the top of your building quickly when you restart. Hint: Put one near where the king appears so you can get there easily. Big Doors --------- These have very high cost and NO return. However, if you have a key and press fire in front of its lock the door will open revealing a prize... Hint: Keys appear at random on walls and you may need to build a window and use its ledge to reach them. Goyles ------ A Goyle is a nasty from beyond, attracted by the magic when you pull up a Building Block and with an appetite for bricks. When a Goyle appears he'll steal your bricks when he touches you and vanish when he's had his fill. But if you blow your trombone you can stun him, then slap him to steal some bricks back. When you steal ALL his bricks he will turn to stone and you will now have a Gargoyle to build with! be warned though, the more you hit him the faster he gets. You can build with goyles using the Building Block in the normal way. Hint: The more platforms you have on screen when a goyl appears the easier it is to manouvre to slap him. This is also true when the King Appears. In Game Options --------------- Cycle the Building Block till you come to the [?]. Karate slap that and three more blocks appear - the in game options: (use left/right/fire to select and choose) [Red Cross] This will exit to the title screen. Your building won't be lost though (as long as you don't quit the game) and you can return to it and carry on building. [Green Arrow] As described before, this will remove the building block and return you to moving about your building. [Disk] Saves your building to the disk (see the following section). Disk Management --------------- Your building (and details such as it's name) can be saved to disk, so if playing from floppy make sure its WRITE ENABLED. When you choose in the titles for the first time the game will load your building and associated data from the disk. When you first play this should just be an empty plot of ground. If you exit the game then again you will just return to your building already loaded. So you can return to the titles, reset the options and then carry on building. You save your building via the in game options as described above. If you want to re-load a building from when you last saved you'll have to load the program again. But if you're a worthy mason why would you need to? If you destroy your building and start building a new one, your old one will still be on disk till you save the current one over it. [Hard Disk Users] To install Erections to Hard Disk follow these steps: 1. Make a suitably named directory ("Erections" would be a good one). 2. Copy the contents of the disk into it (except for the libs & devs dirs). 3. Make sure you have copies of the files from the floppy libs dir in your Hard Disk libs dir. 4. To exit back to your Workbench when playing from hard drive simply quit and save the current game and when on the main menu press Ctrl+C. And Thats It ------------ Bye For Now
