PREFACE Welcome to Enchanted Realms, the Premier Adventure Game Magazine for the Commodore Amiga. In fact, Enchanted Realms is presently the ONLY adventure game publication specifically devoted to the Amiga. We feel it's about time that the Amiga received the quality adventure game coverage it deserves. And, that's only fair since it's the BEST gaming platform of all personal computers. Enchanted Realms had its birth not from a desire to create a financially successful publication (though we certainly hope it becomes one), but out of a love for the adventuring experience. While computers provide us with enjoyment in all areas of interest, nothing furnishes as much satisfaction or excites us more than immersing ourselves in a good adventure. We hope that we can share some of that excitement with you. We also believe that adventure gaming is a great family activity and that it should be a wholesome experience for all. Therefore, we have established criteria concerning the material included in this publication. Basically, we have the right to refuse for publication any material of questionable content. This is our conviction and we hope you will respect us for it. Thanks! Above all, it's our hope that Enchanted Realms will provide you with hours of enjoyment in the years ahead! At Enchanted Realms, we are committed to furnishing you with up-to-date reviews of the newest commercial adventures, letting you know which games are a good investment and which ones to avoid. In addition, each issue features walkthroughs, hints and/or maps to help you through those more difficult situations, as well as public domain, shareware and specially commissioned adventure games and gaming aids. Enchanted Realms is also an advertising-free publication. No space is taken up with commercial advertising, allowing us to give you the most for your investment. Other publications devote as much as 50% or more of their space to commercial advertising. This results in the subscriber buying more ads than reviews and helps. We believe our support should come from our subscribers, not software manufacturers. If we do our job well, you will support us with your subscription dollars and enable us to continue providing you with the best resources available. With your help, we can keep Enchanted Realms advertising-free! There are several things you need to know about the functioning of this program. Enchanted Realms requires Workbench 1.2 or greater, 1MB of RAM and garnet font in your fonts directory for proper operation. Those who use a floppy-based Workbench will need to run Fonts2RAM before starting Enchanted Realms and Fonts2SYS when finished, otherwise you may experience noticeable delays when changing screens. If you have Workbench on a hard drive, you should have no need to follow this procedure. Enchanted Realms, however, may not operate properly, or at all, on some 68030 systems. You can still access all the programs and files on disk, but you will need to use some form of text reader to access the textfiles. The interface for the disk supplement is quite simple. Click only ONCE on buttons to access the features of the program. The main access panel of Enchanted Realms has five buttons. Book Of The Realm takes you here. Chamber Of Runes takes you to the maps and hints section on disk. Sleep puts the program to sleep on Workbench. Orb Of Visions takes you on a visual tour of fantasy art on disk. (You can click to go to the next image, wait 10 seconds to automatically go there or press "Amiga Q" to return to the main access panel). And, Depart (Need I say more?). To bypass the introductory music and credits, click the left mouse button immediately after the screen turns black. Also, be sure to check out the menus on each screen. This is where many of the program's options are accessed. We hope you enjoy adventuring through Enchanted Realms. Thanks for taking the time to look us over! Chuck Miller Lord of the Realms (Editor), Enchanted Realms -}---- -}---- -}---- DEED OF THE REALM Contents Though content will vary some from issue to issue, we are committed to providing our readers with up-to-date reviews of commercial software, as well as the best in on-disk adventure games, character generators, game editors, maps and fantasy art. Purchasing Enchanted Realms does not constitute purchasing the rights to shareware when it appears on disk. The authors retain full rights to their work and should be justly compensated for such. If you find the program enjoyable and use it, please send the requested fee to the author. The whole Amiga community benefits by doing so and the author is further encouraged to continue writing additional programs. To the best of our knowledge, all freely distributable materials on disk have been identified by their authors as such or have been obtained from recognized sources of freely distributable software. Enchanted Realms, Digital Expressions and all parties involved in the production of this publication assume no responsibility or liability for materials improperly identified as freely distributable. Subscriptions & Subscriber Benefits Enchanted Realms Adventure Game Magazine is published bimonthly by Digital Expressions. Submissions For information on submitting your work to Enchanted Realms, please refer to the back inside cover of the Journal. Miscellaneous Each issue of the Enchanted Realms' disk is filled as close to capacity as possible. However, we will not simply "stuff" a disk just to fill it. Only quality material is included on disk. We also use data compression whenever possible, allowing us to free up additional space so that we can include that much more on disk. In addition, each disk is processed with a disk optimizer to ensure the fastest possible access to each program and to reduce disk thrashing. Enchanted Realms can be run from a hard drive, but you will need to copy ALL the directories and files on disk to your hard drive and put the proper assign in your startup-sequence. Disclaimer Although many hours have been spent producing and testing this program, some bugs may still be nesting in the dark recesses of Enchanted Realms. If you manage to stir them up, please contact us and let us know about their existence. Thanks! Enchanted Realms has been designed to run on Amigas with 1MB of memory or more. It will not run on systems with only 512K of memory. However, most programs included on disk will operate fine on 512K systems. If any disk turns out to be defective, we will replace it for you at no additional charge. Subscribers can call us at (216) 582-0910 for prompt service. Single-copy purchasers must return the damaged disk to us for replacement. Enchanted Realms, Digital Expressions and all parties involved in the production of this publication do not assume any responsibility, direct or indirect, for damages or losses incurred from the use of Enchanted Realms or any software included on disk. Nor are the above parties liable for any damages incurred by defective media or from errors or omissions. The purchaser assumes complete responsibility for any direct, indirect or consequential damages incurred from the use of or inability to use any program contained on disk in Enchanted Realms. Credits & Special Thanks We want to thank the many people who have contributed to the production of Enchanted Realms for the time and talents they have invested. In alphabetical order they are: Mike Ballenger, John Basso, Charlie Besecker, John Gray and Rick Henly.
