COMPUGRAPHIC OUTLINE FONTS DOCUMENTATION CONTENTS OF CGFONTS DISKS The CGFonts disks contain 35 Compugraphic Outline Fonts, as well as a number of utilities for installing, converting, and downloading the fonts. Each disk contains a separate installation program for each of its fonts, allowing you to install only thoise fonts that you require. There is also a complete installation program on the CGFonts_1 disk that allows you to install all of the outline fonts at one time. If you have a hard drive, you can install individual fonts automatically with the provided install programs. Each font has its own installation icon. Simply click on the installation icon of the font that you wish to install, hold down the "Shift" key, and double click on the drawer you wish to install that font into. All of the necessary files and directories will be copied into that drawer. You may also install all of the fonts at once by using the "Install_All_Fonts" program on the CGFonts_1 disk. If you wish to use the Outline fonts in conjunction with Professional Page, install Professional Page first and then double click on the desired install icon. The install programs automatically place the Outline fonts into the assigned directory CGFonts: if you do not indicate an alternative directory. What are Outline Fonts? Traditional Amiga fonts are stored as bitmapped fonts. Bitmapped fonts come in different sizes and are made up of individual blocks called pixels. Small bitmapped fonts are constructed from very few pixels, while large ones require more pixels, and take up correspondingly more room on a disk. If you need a font of a certain size that does not already exist on your "Fonts:" directory, you are often out of luck. Although there are programs such as Pro Page and PageSetter II that scale existing Amiga fonts 'on-the-fly' to create a new on-screen font size, the results are often very rough. Scaling any bitmapped font usually ptroduces distorted letters which have jagged edges, or steps, and the more you scale a bitmapped font, the worse things become. Scaling existing Amiga fonts down to small sizes often produces letters that are virtually illegible. The solution to this problem is Compugraphic Outline Font technology. Unlike bitmapped fonts, outline fonts are stored as curves and straight lines rather than pixles. These mathematical descriptions can be used to create a perfect font of ANY size without the ugly jagged edges associated with bitmapped fonts. The result is that fonts can be used on-screen and printed out at any size and still look smooth and professional, even on a 9-pin dot matrix printer. CreateFont--the Compugraphic Font Converison Utility Included on Disk 1 is a program called CreateFont. This utility is used to convert the Compugraphic fonts into three other formats: Amiga fonts, Professional Draw outline fonts, and downloadable PostScript fonts. This allows you to use the Compugraphic fonts with virtually any Amiga application. Using CGFonts with Professional Page and PageSetter II Professional Page and PageSetter II are able to use the CGFont files exactly as they are, and do not require the use of the CreateFont utility. If, however, yomu are using a PostScript printer, yomu may wish to generate downloadable PostScript fonts for typefaces which are not "built-in" to your printer. See "Generating PostScript Fonts" for instructions on how to do this. Using CGFonts with Professional Draw Professional Draw uses a variant of the CGFonst for its type creating and editing. You can create PDraw fonts by following the instructions below under "Generating Professional Draw Fonts." Generating Amiga Fonts Creating regular Amiga bitmapped fonts from the CGFonts require the use of the CreateFont program on Disk #1. Fonts created with this program can be used with any Amiga program which uses proportional fonts. Start the ptogram in the usual manner from Workbench or CLI. Select "Amiga" under "Output Format". You may indicate the font that you wish to use by typing the name of the CGFont in the "Data File" box, or you may click on the disk icon to the right of the box to bring up a file requester. You will notice that each outline font has its own directory, which contains many different styles. For each type style (bold, oblique, roman, etc.) there exists three files; an .ATC file, a .DAT file, and a .LIB file. The CreateFont program uses the .DAT files. Select the .DAT file for the font you wish to convert. Then type a name in the "Font File" box. This will be the name of the Amiga font once it is created. (You do not need to type in ".font" at the end of the font name. The font will be saved in FONTS:.) Below the "Font File" box are three boxes labeled "Horizontal DPI", "Vertical DPI", and "Point Size". These parameters control the resoultion, aspect ratio, and the size of the final bitmapped font. If you are creating the fonts for use with a printer, enter the vertical and horizontal DPI of your printer into the boxes. The aspect ratio will be determined by your printer. If you intend to use the fonts for onscreen display, the DPI settings can be used to match the aspect ratio of the font to the aspect ratio of a specific screen resolution. This corresponds to the point size and not the pixel size of the font. You may need to experiment... Once you have set the parameters, click on the start button. Generating Professional Draw Fonts Creating fonts for Pro Draw is much the same. Select the "PDraw" button, and type in the name of the data file or bring up the requester. The font will be saves to the "PDrawFonts:" drawer. Generating PostScript Fonts If you have a PostScript printer, you can generate new PostScript fonts with CreateFont. An additional program, "Download", lets you install these fonts in your printer. The fonts created will be put in a directory called "PS" within the CGFonts: directory. Downloading PostScript Fonts Use the "Download" program on Disk #1 to download fonts to a PostScript printer. It works like most Amiga programs; select the fonts you want to download, use "0" for a password for most printers, and select the destination by clicking on "PAR:" or "SER:".
