The PPProgram disk is too full to add additional fonts. With the ability to change font directories from within Pen Pal, you can have font directories on data disks where there is usually more room. For people with a hard drive and many fonts, the ability to change font directories from within Pen allows access to more than the 200 maximum font limitation Pen Pal currently has. TO CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT FONT DIRECTORY: 1. Close all document windows that are open. 2. Choose "Change Font List" from the "File" menu. FILE NEW OPEN CLOSE ALL SAVE ALL CHANGE FONT LIST QUIT AQ The program will display a file requestor in which you are to locate the desired font directory. 3. After you locate the font directory, double-click the mouse on its name in the requestor's list. Pen Pal will load the fonts in the directory and rebuild its Font and Size menus. When you open a document window, the fonts in the new directory will be available. 1-2 TO SAVE A FONT DIRECTORY AS A PEN PAL PREFERENCE: 1. When finished working with Pen Pal choose Quit from the File menu. If you have changed font directories while working with Pen Pal, the program will ask you if you want to save the font directory choice as the default font directory. YOU CHANGED TO A DIFFERENT FONT DIRECTORY. DO YOU WANT TO MAKE THIS FONT DIRECTORY THE NEW DEFAULT? YES NO 2. If you want to use the new font directory as the default the next time Pen Pal is started, answer "YES". When documents are saved, Pen Pal saves the names of all fonts ever used in the document with the document's data on disk. This allows it to recreate a document in the appropriate fonts each time you open it. If you change to a different font directory, and then open a document that contains one or more fonts not in the new font directory, Pen Pal will substitute a default Topaz font for the fonts it could not find. When it does this, it notifies you with a warning requestor. It is a good practice to have the Topaz 11 font and any other fonts you use most often in all of your font directories. This will help eliminate the problems of opening a document created with fonts that are not available in a font directory. 1-3 CHANGING DATABASE COLUMN TYPE In Pen Pal Version 1.0 the type of a database column could only be changed when no data had yet been entered into the database. Now a database column's type can be changed at any time as long as the data already entered for the column agrees with the new type. For example, if a column is defined as TEXT and later you want to change the type to AMOUNT, the program will let you do this as long as all data in the column consists of valid numeric amounts. TO CHANGE A DATABASE COLUMN TYPE: 1. Open the database to be redefined. 2. Choose "Redefine" from the "File" menu. The program will display the "Database Definition" requestor. 3. Click the mouse on the name of the column to be redefined. Pen Pal will display the column's current definition. 4. Click the mouse on the desired type. 5. Click the mouse on the "Save" button. 6. Click the mouse on the "OK" button to remove the requestor. The following are requirements for data in certain column types: DATE MM/DD/YY - where MM is a valid month, DD a valid day of the month, and YY the year of a century. TIME HH:MMxM-where HH is a valid hour, MM is a valid minute of an hour, and x is either "A" "P". AMOUNT Digits 1-9, a decimal point, and optional "-" sign. YES/NO Either a valid Yes or No response. 1-4 NEW PROGRAM PREFERENCES The Program Preference screen has been modified to provide for two new preference items. The new screen is as follows: Preferences: Program Document Text Print Database Graphic Print Startup Mode: (1) Printer Paper Feed: Mouse Speed: New Document Continuous - 2 + Default Database Sheet (Manual) Open a Document Sheet (Auto.) Pen Pal Buffer: (1) Open a Database Chip (2) No action Display Mode: (1) Fast Close Workbench? Normal Percent to use: (1) No Yes Interlace - 50 + (1) Restart Pen Pal to activate. Save (2) IFF pics. require % to be less than 100. Cancel STARTUP MODE The Startup Mode contains two new options. NO ACTION Lets Pen Pal start with a blank screen. CLOSE WORKBENCH? Instructs Pen Pal to close the Workbench screen when it starts up. Closing the Workbench screen frees up additional graphic memory for IFF pictures. When the Workbench screen is closed by Pen Pal, it is automatically opened when you quit Pen Pal. PRINTER PAPER FEED Indicates the type of printer you are using. Laser and DeskJet printers are Sheet (Auto) while others are usually Continuous. 1-5 NEW DOCUMENT PRINT REQUESTOR The Document Print Requestor has been modified. This requestor is the one that appears when you select one of the Print options from the "File" menu. Print Mode: Pages to be printed: Printer Font & Amiga Graphics All Pages Amiga Fonts & Amiga Graphics Range of Pages Copies to be printed: From:- 1 + - 1 + To: - 1 + Print Cancel Print Mode - Indicates whether you want to print using the printer font or the Amiga fonts. Copies to be printed - Indicates the number of copies of the printout that you want. Pages to be printed - Indicates the number of pages of the document to be printed. When printing mail merge or report merge, use "All Pages". 1-6 NEW DATABASE PRINT REQUESTOR The Database Print Requestor has been modified. This requestor is the one that appears when you select "Print Report" from the "File" menu. Copies: - 1 + Report Height - 58 + Report Width - 70 + Top Margin - 4 + Left Margin - 5 + Page Length - 66 + Column Divider? Yes Line Spacing - 0 + Number Pages? Yes Number lines? No Report Title gh5:database/Listings.FLR Print Cancel 1-7 SAVING PARAGRAPH MARKERS IN ASCII DOCUMENTS There is now an option that allows you to save a Pen Pal paragraph marker at the end of each paragraph saved in a file saved in the ASCII format. The purpose for this option is to allow ASCII documents saved in Pen Pal to be read into any program that recognizes a carriage return as an end of paragraph marker in order to reconstruct Pen Pal paragraphs. TO SAVE PARAGRAPH MARKERS IN AN ASCII DOCUMENT: 1.When saving an ASCII document in Pen Pal the program will ask if you want to save paragraph markers. Click on "Yes" to save paragraph markers. Click on "No" to not save paragraph markers. Pen Pal will insert a carriage return character (hex 0x0D-decimal 13) at the end of each paragraph. If you are reading a document saved with carriage return paragraph markers, answer "No" and Pen Pal will reconstruct the paragraphs automatically. NOTE. When you are modifying files such as a startup-sequence file, you should open the file and instruct Pen Pal to treat each line as a paragraph. When you save the file, you should NOT save paragraph markers. 1-8 IMPROVED AMIGA FONT AND PRINTER FONT OUTPUT There is now a new option in the document's "Page Setup" requestor. This new option allows you to adjust a document's page resolution to match your Pen Pal printer preference settings. This results in printouts that are optimal for your printer and its resolution. Below is the revised requestor: Page Orientation: Page Type: Inc.:(Width Height) Right Right/Left US Letter... (8.50 x 11.00) Left Left/Right US Legal... (8.50 x 14.00) Adjust Page To: European... (8.25 x 11.67) Normal (No Adjustment) International (8.25 x 12.00) Graphic Print Preferences Custom... (8.000 x 11.000) Text Print Preferences First Page #: - 1 + Custom Width: - 640 + Print Gutter: - 0 + Custom Height: - 990 + OK Cancel ADJUST PAGE TO The "Normal" setting is the default for documents. It is the way Pen Pal set up documents before this option was available. When you open documents created before this version, this will be the setting for the document. You will need to reset it, if you want it different. The "Graphic Print Preference" setting adjusts a document's rulers to match the Density setting (1-7) chosen in Pen Pal's "Graphic Print" preference screen. The "Text Print Preference" setting adjusts rulers to match the "Pitch" and "Lines Per Inch" in Pen Pal's "Text Print" preferences. 1-9 COMMON QUESTIONS 2-1 WHICH EPSON DRIVER SHOULD BE USED? Most of the questions received about printer drivers come from people with Epson compatible printers. On the Pen Pal PPExtras disk there are three Epson printer drivers: EpsonQ, EpsonXOld, and EpsonX [CBM_MPS-1250]. EPSONQ (24-PIN EPSON COMPATIBLE) Characteristics of this 24-pin printer driver are: 1.Dot matrix b&w/color printer (text and graphics). 2.Drives all EpsonQ compatible printers such as LQ1500 and LQ2500. 3.Density XDPI YDPI Comments 1 90 180 2 120 180 3 180 180 4 360 180 Use only for B&W dumps. EPSONX[CBM_MPS-1250] (8/9 pin Epson compatible) Characteristics of this printer driver are: 1.Density XDPI YDPI Comments 1 120 72 2 120 144 2 pass 3 240 72 Use only for B&W dumps 4 120 216 3 pass 5 240 144 2 pass - Use only for B&W 6 240 216 3 pass - Use only for B&W 2-2 EPSONXOLD (8/9-pin Epson compatible) Characteristics of this printer driver are: 1. Use this driver if the EpsonX[CBM_MPS-1250]drive doesn't work properly in graphics mode. 2. Dot matrix b&w/color printer (text and graphics) 3. Density XDPI YDPI Comments 1 120 72 2 240 72 Use only for B&W dumps WHICH PRINTER DRIVER WORKS WITH THE STAR NX1000 RAINBOW? Another frequently asked question about printers is which driver is used with the Star NX1000 Rainbow. This is one of the printers we have at SoftWood. It works very well with the EpsonX[CBM_MPS-1250]on the Pen Pal PPExtras disk. WHY DO I GET STRIPS OF WHITE BETWEEN MY GRAPHICS? This condition occurs only when trying to use printer text with Amiga graphics. It is caused by one of the following conditions: 1. The correct printer driver is not installed. If you are using the EpsonXOld printer driver, you probably will encounter this problem. Try using the EpsonX[CBM_MPS-1250]driver. This driver is a newer 1.3 Workbench driver. 2. Either the printer or the printer driver you are using will not support Pen Pal's text and graphic printing. Printers that have been reported with this problem are the Xerox 4020, Okimate, and the Okidata printers. 2-3 WHY IS GRAPHIC PRINTING SO SLOW? Printing in the printers text font is very fast. Printing graphics such as IFF pictures, Amiga graphic fonts, or graphics drawn in Pen Pal is considerably slower. Although graphics will always print slower than printer text fonts, there are some things you can do to speed up your graphic printing. All of the options in the following list are set in Pen Pal's Graphic Print Preference screen. Do not confuse this screen with the Workbench Preference screen on the PPProgram disk. The lower the Density the faster the printout. Use a lower graphic Density for drafts and proofs. Then for final printing, use a high Density, if desired. Turn OFF Smoothing except for final printing. You may find Smoothing really doesn't do much anyway. Smoothing will double the print time! Use the "Ordered" Dithering option rather than "F-S". "F-S" Dithering doubles the print time. If you are dumping a 1 bitplane image, select the "Black & White" Shade option. Pen Pal uses a special print method called 12 bit-plane printing. This method allows it to exactly reproduce the palettes of all graphics on a page. This method, for example, allows you to print a HAM picture on the same page and even the same line as other graphics. Only by using 12 bit-plane printing is it possible to accurately reproduce all 4096 colors on the same page that are possible on the Amiga. Some programs use a method called dithering to convert a picture's colors before sending the image to the printer in a 3 bit-plane printing mode. Although this method is faster, it results in an inferior quality graphic output to what you can get in Pen Pal. Use the techniques listed above for faster proofs, then do whatever is desired for the final output. 2-4 WHEN SHOULD WORKBENCH PRINTER PREFERENCES BE USED? The ONLY preference items you need to set in the Workbench Printer Preferences are: Printer type-either Parallel or Serial. Printer driver-selection of the appropriate driver. ALL other printing preferences are set in Pen Pal. If a print preference is on the Workbench Printer preferences but not in Pen Pal's, it is one that is not used during Pen Pal printing. WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO PRINT ON THE HP DESKJET AND DESKJET PLUS PRINTERS? The HP DeskJet and DeskJet Plus printers are automatic sheet fed printers that do not print on a full 8 1/2 by 11 or 8 1/2 by 14 page. These printers are excellent choices for Amiga Black & White and gray scale printing due to their high resolution and relatively low price. Pen Pal has been modified to work with these printers. If you have one of these printers, or if you have a HP LaserJet printer, you should do the following: Select the "Sheet (Auto)" option under "Printer Paper Feed" in Pen Pal's Program Preference screen. Always use a Custom page size with a height of 747 pixels (10.375 or 10 3/8 inches). You set this in Pen Pal's "Page Setup" requestor. We recommend that you create a setup document with this parameter set. In so doing, whenever you start a new document, the page height will automatically be set. On your printer's dip switches, set all switches down except for the last switch in the first bank of switches. 2-5 WHY CAN'T I PRINT IN COLOR? If you have a color printer and it has a color ribbon, you should be able to print any Amiga graphic in color. Possible reasons why you are not getting color include: The "Color" Shade option is not selected in Pen Pal's "Graphic Print" preferences. It is not enough to select "Color" in the "Workbench" preferences. In fact, the "Workbench" setting is overridden by whatever is selected in the Pen Pal preferences. Go into Pen Pal's "Graphic Print" preferences, select the "Color" Shade option, and save the new settings. The incorrect printer driver is installed-or no printer driver other than the Generic driver is installed. Make sure you have the correct printer driver installed. (Hard Disk users only) An old version of the Printer.Device or printer driver is on your hard disk. Pen Pal Version 1.2 comes with the very latest Workbench 1.3.2 software from Commodore. Compare via CLI or a CLI utility the dates and sizes of the Printer.Device and printer driver. Replace the ones on your hard disk with the ones on the Pen Pal disk. Printer.Device in in "Devs:". The printer drivers in "Devs:Printers/". Consult your dealer or a friend who is familiar with CLI if you do not use the CLI. (HP PaintJet users only) Perhaps your ink cartridge needs primed or replaced. Only graphics will print in color. Pen Pal presently does not print Printer Font text in color. When you print using the Amiga fonts, all text will appear in the color you have selected. When you print using the Printer font, all text will appear in black. 2-6 PEN PAL SEEMS TO PRINT OVER MY PAGE PERFORATION. WHY? Pen Pal's default settings for new documents is a half inch header margin, and a half inch footer margin. This gives 10 inches for the body of a document. In addition, Pen Pal begins printing at the spot you have your paper aligned in the printer. Therefore, it first prints anything in the header, prints the body, and then prints the footer. On the screen in normal non-interlaced mode, vertical distances appear taller than they do when printed. It is an easy mistake to look at the document on the screen and think you have a one inch header when in fact it is only 1/2 inch. If your paper is setup on screen, by the time Pen Pal prints your footer you may be at the perforation of the paper. To correct this problem, move the paper up in your printer. To test where the exact placement of paper should be, enter some text on the 1st line of the header, and print your document. The text that you entered should appear immediately below the perforation in your paper. If there are blank lines before the text, the paper needs to be aligned differently. HOW DO I PRINT AMIGA FONTS AND PRINTER FONTS ON THE SAME PAGE? The only way to do this is to create the text to be printed in Amiga Fonts in a paint program and save it as a brush. Import the brush into Pen Pal and place it where ever you want it. Create the other text using Topaz 11 as usual. When you print, use the "Printer Font Amiga Graphic" option. 2-7 WHAT IS THE PURPOSE FOR THE MEMORY OPTIONS IN PEN PAL? Two of Pen Pal's "Program" preference options are titled "Pen Pal Buffer:", and "Percent to use:". The original intent for these options was to provide a way for the user to limit the amount of RAM available to Pen Pal when running in a multi-tasking environment. It was thought that it would be convenient to provide a ceiling at which Pen Pal would cease to allocate system RAM so that other programs could access RAM they currently were not using. Unfortunately, this option really only applies to users with machines with more than 1 megabyte of RAM. For other users it has been a nuisance and a source of confusion. Below are several configurations of Amigas and recommended memory settings. These settings can be modified depending upon your needs (for example if working with a large database that needs more RAM). AMIGA 500 OR 2000 WITH 1 MEGABYTE OF RAM AND THE SUPER-FAT AGNES CHIP Pen Pal Buffer: Chip Percent to use: 50 to 60 AMIGA 500, 1000, OR 2000 WITH 1 MEGABYTE OF RAM WITHOUT THE SUPER FAT AGNES CHIP Pen Pal Buffer: Fast Percent to use: 70 to 90 ANY AMIGA WITH MORE THAN 2 OR MORE MEGABYTES OF RAM Pen Pal Buffer: Fast Percent to use: 25 to 50 2-8 WHEN SHOULD I USE THE "CLOSE WORKBENCH" STARTUP OPTION IN PEN PAL'S "PROGRAM" PREFERENCES? The purpose of this option is to free additional RAM for IFF graphics. It can also be used to free RAM for all operations. When this option is selected, Pen Pal automatically closes Workbench when it starts up. Later when you quit Pen Pal, the program automatically reopens Workbench. You can verify whether or not Pen Pal closed Workbench by dragging the Pen Pal title bar downward with the left mouse button when Pen Pal is running. If all you see is black behind Pen Pal's screen, the Workbench has been closed. The amount of RAM freed by closing Workbench depends upon whether you are in interlace mode, or your system is setup for overscan. In normal, non-interlace mode, you will free at least 32K of RAM. If you are in interlace mode, you will free at least 64K. If you are using overscan, these figures will be higher. NOTE. Pen Pal will be unable to close Workbench if you have any task running from a CLI. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHIP AND FAST MEMORY Chip memory refers to graphics memory. Fast memory refers to external memory. Older 1 megabyte Amigas came with 512K of Chip memory, and 512K of Fast memory. The new Amigas released with the super-fat Agnes chip come with 1 megabyte of Chip memory. 2-9 WHAT HAPPENS WITH MEMORY WHEN LOADING IFF PICTURES? Pen Pal has been designed to let you use as many pictures as you want in your documents regardless of the amount of memory you have. The one requirement however is that you have enough graphics memory to store any given picture. This does not mean that you must have enough RAM to store all pictures in your document at the same time, only that you have enough RAM to store any given picture. After you specify a picture to be imported, Pen Pal reads information about the picture and displays that information on the Picture Settings requestor. Among other items on this requestor are the amount of RAM the picture requires, and the amount of RAM available. The thing to know about the amount of RAM available is that it is the total amount of unused CHIP or graphics memory currently not used in your system. It still may be possible to load a picture even if the amount of available RAM shown on this requestor is less than the RAM required for the picture. This is possible when pictures have already been loaded, and are using enough graphics memory that if freed would allow the current picture to be loaded. The way Pen Pal handles multiple pictures in RAM is that it tries to keep in graphics memory all pictures. If you try to load a picture and there is not enough graphics memory available, the program tries to swap one or more pictures currently loaded in Chip memory into Fast or external memory. If no Fast or external memory is available, the program completely frees the memory required for the picture's image, and simply retains the disk path name of the pictures whose memory was freed. It then loads the new picture into the computer's graphics memory for display. Later, when one of the pictures that was either swapped out to Fast memory, or whose memory was freed is to be displayed, the program does what is necessary 2-10 to free enough graphics memory to access the picture in the same way as when a new picture was loaded. If your computer has lots of Fast or external memory around, this process is rather fast. If your computer is limited to the amount of external memory available and Pen Pal must reload the picture from disk, this process can be rather slow. The thing to remember when bringing in a picture is that there must be enough graphics memory available for that picture. The available graphics memory not only includes the figure shown on the Picture Settings requestor, but also any graphics memory currently used by other pictures you have already loaded. CAN I BENEFIT FROM UPGRADING MY AMIGA WITH THE SUPER-FAT AGNES CHIP Yes, for at least two reasons. First, you will be able to load larger pictures into Pen Pal. Using the super-fat Agnes Chip you will be able to load in large hi-resolution HAM pictures not possible with the older Agnes chip. Second, if you only have 1 megabyte of RAM, Pen Pal will utilize your RAM more efficiently because it is contiguous rather than separated into Chip and Fast. We recommend upgrading if you can. 2-11 HOW CAN I GET DOCUMENTS TO PRINT CORRECTLY WHEN USING THE PRINTER FONT? This question is often asked when someone is printing a document with the "Printer Font Amiga Graphic" print mode. The problem is that what is printed does not match what is on the screen. There are things that can be done to get printouts to look the same as the screen. First it is important that one knows why the problem is occurring. When text is entered on the screen any given letter can begin at any one of 80 dots for every horizontal inch (1/80 inch increments), and any one of 72 dots for every vertical inch. If you print a document in "Amiga Font Amiga Graphic" mode, you will get on a page exactly what you see on the screen. When printing with the printer font, however, Pen Pal can only align characters at certain areas. For example when printing in Pica pitch, each character is aligned on a 1/10 of an inch boundary. In Elite pitch, each character is aligned on a 1/12 of an inch boundary. The reason printouts can look different than what is on the screen when using the printer font, is that the characters are aligned differently. The difference in alignment may cause a different word wrap at the end of a line resulting in more lines of text. In order to get printouts to look like what is on the screen when printing with the printer font: 1. Set all margins (top, bottom, left, and right), tab stops, and paragraph indents on increments of 1/2 inch (.5, 1.5, 2 etc). 2. In Pen Pal's Document preference screen, set the value for "Adjust graphics during Text + Graphics printing" to an appropriate value for your printer (See next question). 3. Use Topaz 11 and print in Pica pitch at 6 lines per inch. 2-12 HOW DO I ADJUST THE VERTICAL ALIGNMENT OF GRAPHICS WHEN PRINTING WITH THE PRINTER FONT? If your graphics appear either above or below text on your printouts, but look fine on screen, it is usually because a Pen Pal Document preference item needs to be set to accommodate your printer. In Pen Pal's Document preferences, there is an item labeled "Adjust Graphics during Text + Graphics printing". Suggested settings for this item are: -7 For Epson and compatible printers 0 For HP DeskJet, PaintJet, and Lasers If your printer is not one of the above, you can experiment with the setting using the document "Adjust Graphics" included on the PPExtras disk. This document is simply a couple of words enclosed in a graphic. When the preference setting is set correctly, the printed version should match what you see on the screen. 2-13 CORRECTIONS TO USER MANUAL 3-1 The following are corrections to mistakes in the Pen Pal User Manual. Depending upon when your manual was printed, it may or may not contain one or more of these errors. MANUAL PAGE 1-4 INSTALLING ON A FLOPPY BASED AMIGA In the description beneath Step 3 the word "PProgram" should instead read "PPProgram". MANUAL PAGE 1-7 STARTING PEN PAL In the illustration the PPProgram disk's icon should read "PPProgram" and not "Pen Pal". MANUAL PAGE 3-37 EXPORTING AN ASCII DOCUMENT Step #2 should read: 2. Choose "Save As" from the "File" menu. MANUAL PAGE 7-25 EXPORTING AN ASCII DATABASE Step #2 should read: 2. Choose "Save As" from the "File" menu. MANUAL PAGE A-2 CREATING A DATA DISK USING TWO DRIVES In the 3 paragraphs of description in Step 3 the word "Extras" should instead read "PPExtras". 3-2 ============================================================================ DOCS PROVIDED BY -+*+-THE SOUTHERN STAR-+*+- for M.A.A.D. ============================================================================
