*** Press H (Help) for additional information *** HDInstall will copy City Desk 2.0 and the files it needs for your printer to your hard drive. Two different procedures have been provided. Method 1 ======== If you would like to install City Desk 2.0 on you SYS: partition (SYS: is normally the partition which contains Workbench), and if your Workbench (SYS:) partition is large enough to store approximately 2 megabytes of City Desk 2.0 files, then Method 1 is for you. If you plan to use Method 1, you should read the section below entitled "Method 1" Method 2 ========= Documentation for Method 2 provides additional information for users who want to have more control over which files HDInstall copies and to which partition it moves them. Method 2 documentation should also be used by those people who, because of the configuration of their Amiga, encounter problems with HDInstall while trying the Method 1 installation procedure. If you plan to use Method 2 you should read all of this readme file. *********** This readme file is in five parts. *********** Method 1 6 simple steps explaining how to use HDInstall to copy the files City Desk 2.0 needs for your printer to SYS:. What is HDInstall? Contains basic information about using HDInstall Using HDInstall (Method 2) A step by step walk-through about using HDInstall using Method 2, and tries to answer any question you may have. HDInstall and AmigaDOS Shells: Contains information on the environments under which HDInstall will and won't work. HDInstall General Information: Random pieces of Info re: HDInstall *** Note **** To skip to a section, type period "." then the section you wish to read, and press the Return Key. Then press the letter "n" (without quotes) #=========================================================================# # Method 1 # #=========================================================================# Method 1 ======== 1) To install City Desk 2.0 and the files it needs for you printer, double-click on the HDInstall Icon. 2) If you have at least 200k of free memory, press the Return key when asked if you would like to copy the install files to the RAM: disk. Otherwise type "N" (without quotes), and press the Return key. 3) When you are asked if you would like to enter a destination, press the Return key. This will accept SYS: (SYS: is normally the partition which contains Workbench). 4) When asked which printer you plan to use with City Desk 2.0, select your printer by typing the number to its left and pressing the Return key. 5) At the next menu, type "1" and press the Return key. HDInstall will now Auto Copy all the files City Desk needs for your printer to SYS:. 6a) If you only plan to use one printer with City Desk 2.0, type in the number to the left of "Quit", then press the Return Key. You are now finished. 6b) If you plan to use more than one type of printer, type the number to the left of "Return to Previous Menu.", then press the Return Key. Continue with step 4 above. *** NOTE *** Each of the above steps is covered in much greater detail in the section of this readme file entitled "Using HDInstall (Method 2)". Refer to that section if you have any questions or problems. #=========================================================================# # What # # is # # HDInstall # #=========================================================================# What is HDInstall ================= HDInstall is an AmigaDOS batch file which will allow you to copy City Desk 2.0, and the files it needs for your printer, to your hard drive. It does this by asking you a series of questions. Some of these questions allow you to answer only Yes or No. Other times you will be given a list of suitable options, and be asked to choose one. Option Menus ============ Option Menus are lists of suitable options, and are used whenever it is necessary for you to choose 1 action from a list of several possible alternatives. To select an option, type the number to the left of that option, and press return. Whenever appropriate in an Option Menu, the option which is the recommended choice will be first in the list (option number 1) and will have an arrow "-->" before it. This is the option you should choose if you are unsure. Option Menus try to be forgiving. If you type in something other than one of the options in the list, it will remind you of what you may type, and then re-display the Option Menu. Default Responses to Yes, No Questions ====================================== HDInstall will occasionally ask questions which require you to answer Yes or No. The default response (the "Y" or "N" under the cursor) is generally the recommended answer and can be accepted by simply pressing the Return key. The Default Response is also accepted by typing any letter other than "Y" or "N" and pressing the Return key. If you get confused about the Default Response, don't worry. Just type in either "Y" or "y" for Yes, or "N" or "n" for No, then press the Return key. #=========================================================================# # Using # # HDInstall # # (Method 2) # #=========================================================================# Using HDInstall (Method 2) ========================== The following describes in great detail how to use HDInstall for maximum flexibility. This is called Method 2. Starting HDInstall ================== HDInstall should be run by double clicking its icon from workbench. Check for Shells ================ HDInstall will then open a window (640x200) and begin checking its environment. By checking the Copy command, it attempts to determine if it is being run from a SHELL or if commands other than those from AmigaDOS version 1.3 are being used. If you receive an error message which says: "The Copy command is not responding properly to the QUIET parameter" or "The Copy command is not responding properly to the CLONE parameter" or "The Copy command is not responding properly to the ALL parameter" then you should read the section below titled "HDInstall and AmigaDOS Shells." If HDInstall encounters a problem at this point, it will ask you to "Press Return". After you do, it will exit and close its window. Copy to RAM:? ============= HDInstall works best if it is allowed to copy its necessary support files to the RAM: disk. This will take about 200k of memory. Pressing the Return key will allow HDInstall move its files to the RAM: disk and execute as fast as possible. Typing "N" (without quotes)and then pressing the Return key will force HDInstall to execute from the Disk DATA2 and will cause a DRAMATIC and SEVERE slow-down in its execution. Check for ARP v34.1 =================== HDInstall will check for Arp.library (version 34.1) in you LIBS: directory. If you don't have it, or if your version is less than version 34.1, then HDInstall will ask you if you want version 34.1 of ARP.library copied to your LIBS: directory If you don't know what Arp.library is, or where LIBS: is, fine. Just Press the Return key, and let HDInstall do its thing. The long and the short of it is that City Desk 2.0 MUST HAVE Arp.library (version 34.1 or higher) in you LIBS: directory. If you choose not to let HDInstall copy Arp.library to LIBS:, City Desk 2.0 WILL NOT RUN!!! Enter a Destination? ==================== HDInstall will ask you if you would like to accept SYS: as the default destination. If so, simply press the Return key. SYS: on most Amigas is where files necessary for Workbench are placed. ** Note for Novice AmigaDOS Users ** There is nothing wrong with using SYS: as your destination. However, If you are unsure about where SYS: is on your hard drive, or know that you want CityDesk on a specific hard drive partition, then you should type "Y" (without quotes) and then press the Return key. ** Note for Advanced AmigaDOS Users ** Most Advanced AmigaDOS Users know where they want City Desk and should Type "Y" (without quotes) and then press the Return key. Entering a Destination ====================== If you type "Y", HDInstall will ask you for a destination. Type the destination and press the Return key. The destination may be any partition of any hard drive on your Amiga. Examples: DH0 (First hard drive Partition) DH4 (a Partition of a hard drive) JH0 (First Bridgecard hard drive) FH0 (Working Partition on A2500) The destination you enter must NOT contain a Colon(:) Examples: DH0 (Correct) DH0: (WRONG) DH4 (Correct) DH4: (WRONG) JH0 (Correct) JH0: (WRONG) FH0 (Correct) FH0: (WRONG) The destination CANNOT be given as an AmigaDOS path. Examples: DH1:CityDesk (WRONG) FH1:Work/DTP (WRONG) ** Note for Advanced Users ** The destination may also be any Assigned Device. If you don't know what an Assigned Device is, then you are not an advanced user and should only enter a hard drive partition. Selecting a Printer =================== After entering a destination, HDInstall will present the Printer Option Menu. Here you will choose which printer you plan to use with City Desk 2.0. Type the number to the left of the printer you plan to use and press the Return key. If you plan to use City Desk 2.0 with more than one type of printer, you will be be able to return to this menu and select another printer type. The Options Menu for Different Printers ======================================= After selecting a printer, you will be presented with another Option Menu. Depending upon which printer is selected, there will be different files which should be copied for use with City Desk 2.0. Available Disk Space ==================== To the right of each option will be an area in square brackets which tells you how much space will be needed on your destination for that option. Unfortunately, there is no way for HDInstall to know if there is enough space available on your destination. That will be your job. In Workbench, the number of available disk blocks is easy to obtain. Select the icon of the destination partition, then choose the "Info" option in the "Workbench" menu. The number to the right of "Number Free" is the number of disk blocks you currently have available on that hard drive partition. ** Note ** You may need to shrink the HDInstall window in order to see the Workbench and the Hard Drive icons. After you have found the number of available blocks, simply re-open the HDInstall window, and press the Return key. The Options Menu for your printer will be re-displayed. Selecting Which Files to Copy ============================= ** Note For the Novice User ** If you are a Novice AmigaDOS User you may wish to select the first option, " -->1) Auto Copy...". This will automatically copy all the files necessary for your printer to a directory named "CityDesk" on the hard drive you have selected as your destination. You will then be prompted to enter each disk as it is needed. After the last file has been copied, you will be returned to the Option Menu for your Printer. ** Note for the Advanced User ** If you are more advanced in AmigaDOS, and you wish to have more control over which files are copied and where to place them, or if you have already Selected AutoCopy for another Printer type and wish to copy only the files for this Printer type, then you may select each option on an as-needed basis. After selecting an option, you will be presented with a screen which will tell you a little bit about the file{s} you have chosen to copy. You will once again be told how much available space you need, and be asked if you would like to copy what you have selected. In this Yes/No question, the default answer is always "Y" (Yes) Press "N" (without quotes) and the Return key to abort and return to the previous Options Menu. Press the Return key, or any other letter (except "N") and the Return key to continue. Copy To Where? ============== If you have selected an option other than AutoCopy, you will now be presented with an Options Menu which asks you where you would like to copy the file(s) to. If you are unsure, selecting the first option (the one with the arrow "-->" by it) will probably be your best bet. You may also select any of the other destinations by typing the number to its left and pressing the Return key. If you select an option which has the word "CityDesk" in it, HDInstall will look on your destination for a drawer called "CityDesk." If it does not find it, HDInstall will create a Drawer named CityDesk for you. It will then Copy the file(s) into the CityDesk Drawer. After selecting an option, HDInstall will copy the the file(s) to where you have selected. You will then be returned to the previous Options Menu where you can choose the next file(s) to copy. Never Mind, =========== You may also choose not to copy the file(s) by typing in the number to the left of the last option, and pressing the Return key. This will return you to the Options Menus where you may again select which file(s) you wish to copy. What Next? ========== After copying all the files you desire, either with AutoCopy or one by one, you will once again be in the Options Menu for your Printer. At this point you may select Quit by typing in the option number to its left, and pressing the Return key. You may also return to the Printer Selection Menu by typing in the number to the left of "Return to Previous Menu" option, and pressing the Return key. There you may select a new printer and start this process again. Quitting ======= Selecting the Quit Option will do just that. It will attempt to Clean up all the system resources it has used, and delete from the RAM: disk any files it has placed there. It will then close the HDInstall window. This completes the Method 2 installation procedures. #=========================================================================# # HDInstall # # and # # AmigaDOS Shells # #=========================================================================# HDInstall and AmigaDOS Shells =============================== Because HDInstall relies heavily on features and commands specific to version 1.3 of AmigaDOS, all commands needed by HDInstall are supplied on the Data2 Disk. HDInstall will make every effort to use these commands. ** Note for Advanced Users ** If you are using any products which replace the AmigaDOS Commands (ARP, WShell, Etc...), and you experience problems with HDInstall, you should try executing HDInstall2 from a "Virgin CLI" (640x200) with no commands ALIAS'ed, no commands in the Resident list, and the Path RESET. As a last resort, try Assigning C: to Data2:CDBAT. ** Note for Users of ConMan ** HDInstall will function with ConMan installed, but Screen formatting will be altered slightly. This will not affect the operation of HDInstall. #=========================================================================# # HDInstall # # General # # Information # #=========================================================================# HDInstall General Information ============================= Included below are various bits of information which may be useful to you while using HDInstall. Space Considerations ==================== Each step of this installation procedure will tell you how much space it needs on the destination. You need to determine in advance whether there is adequate file storage space available in the destination partition. This is due to the fact that the installation procedure does not check for storage space before copying itself to the destination, so it's up to you to make sure that there is room for it. If you plan to copy ALL the files to your destination, make sure that you have at least 7200 blocks of storage space free (about 3.6 megabytes). For efficiency, you should allow HDInstall to copy its many files to the RAM: disk. You will need a minimum of 200k of free RAM: disk memory for them. These support files will be deleted automatically from the RAM: disk when the program exits. .PS and .HP Data Files and LaserFontsPool ========================================== When using a laser printer (PostScript or HP LaserJet compatible), City Desk 2.0 needs to know which laser printer fonts you plan use, and which Amiga screen fonts to use with the printer fonts. All this information is stored in a file which you can create using the Laser_Utility. This file should always end with the extension ".ps" for PostScript printers or ".hp" for HP LaserJet compatible. You may create as many ".ps" or ".hp" files as you need. If you store them in LaserFonts:. City Desk will automatically load the information they contain when you select the appropriate laser printer. We also have created a drawer called LaserFontsPool. This is a convenient place to put any ".ps" or ".hp" files you created which are not required for a particular City Desk session. Amiga Screen Fonts for Laser Printers ===================================== When creating files which will use a Laser Printer, City Desk 2.0 requires certain fonts to be in FONTS: These fonts are the same ones that are on the Extras Disk, that came with Workbench v1.3, plus some of the normal Amiga Screen fonts. They may be copied to another directory, and City Desk 2.0 will use them as long as you assign FONTS: to the directory where they you have put them. Examples, from a CLI or SHELL prompt type: Assign FONTS: DH0:CityDesk/LFonts Assign FONTS: SYS:LFonts You may also use DU5 to Assign FONTS: to where you have placed these fonts. Read Section 9. Utilities, of the City Desk manual for information on how to use DU5 for assigning FONTS:.
