Stone age low capacity disks are a thing of the past, project your to the dizzy heights previously reserved only for Macintosh. Your XL Drive is a tri-lingual drive capable of reading IBM PC and Atari formats as well as your Amiga's ownm this is achieved through the use of CrossDos (tm) which is supplied with all Amiga WB2.1 +. Your XL Drive should give you many years of error free use, if you are not entirely satisfied then please don't hesitate to give us a call. Installation. ------------- Switch your Amiga off and plug your drive into the external drive port at the rear of your Amiga. Insert the supplied installation disk into your internal drive and switch on. In order for your drive to work correctly it is necessary for a small software patch to be installed first. Your XL Drive will function without this software but it will be limited in use. Without the patch installed your drive cannot write high density formats, ie. Writing Amiga 1.76MB and IBM 1.44MB is prohibited. It can however read any format, either low or high density. Hard Drive Installation. ------------------------ Users lucky enough to own a harddrive will be oblivious to the presence of the patch, every time you switch the machine on the patch will automatically be loaded without any prompting from yourself. You may use to read or write any computer format at any density. Floppy Drive Installation. -------------------------- users not having the luxury of a hard drive or hard drive users wishing to boot off pre-selected disk must install the patch onto floppy(S). Floppy disks which you normally boot from should have the patch installed onto them, the installation software automatically updates these disks. Once the disk is updated you may use your drive to read and write any computer format at any density. The installation software has several options and full on-screen help, you may opt for either the basic or advanced installation. The basic installation allows you to read/write Amiga 880 kand 1.76MB formats. The advanced instal- lation allows you to read/write Amiga 880k, Amiga 1.76MB, IBM PC 720k, IBM PC 1.44Mb and Atari ST formats. Using IBM or Atari Format Disks. -------------------------------- provided you selected the advance installation from the installation software your Amiga will automatically recognise both these formats. From WorkBench, inserting an Atari or IBM disk will bring up an icon as you would expect, you may then double click on the icon to bring up the files. We should point out that the drive is only capable of reading or writing these formats, in order to 'run' programs a suitable emulator would be required. Common Problems & Questions. ---------------------------- Q: The Amiga reports the disk is write protec\ted but it is not. A: The drive will not allow you to write any high density information to it until the patch has been run, your Amiga will think it is write protected even if its not ! The drive write protected itself as soon as a high density disk is inserted, so even an Amiga 880K disk would report its write protected if previously high density had been used. The solution is to install the patch! Q: How can I access a PC disk from shell? A: Use a device name of 'PC1:' instead of the usual 'df1:' Q: Is the drive fully compatible with all my existing software disks ? A: Yes, but you will run into problems trying to use existing high density disks which have been formatted to 880K capacity. You would either have to re-format them or cover the high density hole with a small lable.
