These days animated gifs are getting more and more popular to give
internet pages a nice extra touch. For AWeb users these animations were
just shown as the first image of the animation. Until now! This plugin for
AWeb will decode and play (nearly) all gif animations on the world wide web
making AWeb the Amiga Internet Browser which is able to show you the
pages as they where meant to be!
Not only animations are supported, normal gif images are handled by this
plugin as well. It will show them in a progressive manner, meaning
that you can already see part of the image when the image is not even
completely downloaded yet.
This is what you'll need to be able to use this plugin:
- AWeb-II 3.0 or higher.
- A 68020 processor or better (030 recommended).
To install this plugin all you need to do is double-click on the installer
icon and select your AWeb directory when asked (or copy the file
animgif.awebplugin to
the awebplugin drawer in the AWeb main directory). Next open the AWeb
browser settings window and select the Viewers tab. Now add or change
the entry IMAGE/GIF, set Extensions to 'gif', Action to
'AWeb plugin' and Name to 'awebplugin/animgif.awebplugin'. In the
Arguments field you can select wether or not you want scaling by setting it
to SCALEMODE=xxx. Where xxx can be:
- No scaling.
- Enlarge width or height in such a way that the aspect ratio of the image
will be as it was meant to be by the author of the image.
- Same as 1 but now the size reduced instead of enlarged.
This plugin is shareware. The demo version is complete, but will
display a message text over the second half of the animation reminding you
that you haven't registered yet. I'm not trying to make a lot of money with
this shareware fee, but I do want to support all new hardware (like Graphic
boards and the PowerPC). Unfortunately I'm just a student and can't afford
this hardware without your support. It's probably possible to
crack the program and remove the message, just remember that this is
illegal and how much better you'll feel having your own personal copy.
For more information about registration look
here.
Known bugs in this release are:
- Transparent images only work correctly on screens with 256 or less
colors.
- This is not really a bug, but for safety reasons all graphical output is
stopped when no AWeb window is active. This is done to prevent a 'deadlock'
which would otherwise occur due to a strange 'bug' in AWeb in combination
with the decoder. Image decoding does continue even when there is no
graphical output.
Planned improvements for the near future are:
- Full support for Cybergraphics.
- Extra scaling mode to scale the image to the size specified in the HTML
document.
- Optimalisation of the decoder for higher speed.
- A PowerPC version for even more speed
(only as soon as the PowerPC boards are available for the A1200 and there
are enough registrations to buy one).
