Some of you guys may remember me as Zok Of Phetamines. Eons ago like. Anywayz on with the show. You may have noticed (pretty hard to miss actually) the U.K scene's lack of hackers. By hackers I mean in the term how Steven Levy describes hackers in his book HACKERS. When a few million people went out and bought PCs (bast!) everything went "C". for the PC anywayz. What does a hacker do. He kicks the living shite out of his machine at low level (assembler) trying to get every last cycle out of it. Maybe even hacking the hell out of the chips and OS to find new tricks and ideas for doing impossible things. I can't remember the blokes name but remember when atari were big enough fuckers to not release all the hardware details for their machine. Certain really cool games were emerging from only certain places. Why not everywhere? Only certain hardware details were released so only certain people knew the other cool stuff. Then a HACKER came along. Ha! fuck that! Went through the whole system and found all these neat little trix no one knew about. ATARI beefed of course. There maybe more and more people getting involved with computers but in my opinion the learning curve/the know how and the hackerdom is all leaving. Why? I know a lot or excellent coders and no offense guys but none of them are simply C (or what ever). All of them at one time or another have learned assembler. Another thing (a lot of PC coders will hate to admit) which is completley true is this. The best coders have all been from the AMIGA. Many of my coding friends have told me this. Anyone can code for a PC but not everyone can for an AMIGA. WHY? you ask. I myself have never coded on a PC but I have been told its a piece of piss. ie. Gimme a Screen lets go. On the AMIGA you have this wierd stuff called hardware. To code the AMIGA you have to know all about the machine. You have all these wierd interrupts, custom chips and a million other things to worry about. If you really know how a computer works you have a lot better chance of getting your head round it. Different types of memory, processors, chips etc... You get hit with all this straight off. This is the main reason why people who have coded for the AMIGA know what their on about. Say an ex-AMIGA coder has been put on the SATURN to do some latest blockbusting game, also a guy from college who has only ever coded in C and doesn't have the first clue what the hell hardware is. You both get given a hardware reference manual, a compiler, disassembler and an assembler each. Not really any guide lines on coding it. So what ya gonna do now. a> Well i'll have a fuck about with the disassembler and see how the hardware works. b> Hmmmmmmm OK which lamer told me to download the 54meg collection of smileys from Alt.Amos.C.Bast! Oh well i'm sure PRINTF will still work. You've seen that AMAZING game QUAKE yeah. Brilliant isn't it. Well it is if you happen to have a p133 anywayz. Jeezez you would have thought that p100 would be ok eh? Companies are taking the piss, they expect that everyone has £3000 to spend on a kick ass PC. Some kids still like to play games you know and they don't get Bill Gates' pocket money! Here's my theory. Back in the 70's no one had even heard of a computer. The guys at MIT and good old Steve Wozniak/Jobbs etc... and all the hackers out there. Wow look at this! What the hell does it do? How do I work it? How do I tell it what to do? Wow look at these tricks! And on in to the 80's. In the beginning computers were a mystery. Certain people, the real hackers and computer freaks wanted to know everything about computers. Everything down to the bits and bytes. Why they work! How they work! If I do something with this machine it is going to be as efficient as possible, it is going to be as fast as possible, it is going to be the best that it can be. This is back when people had the good old speccy 48k or whatever. You have a 48k spectrum. I would like a 5000 screen shoot em up adventure type game please.
