PREMISE OF THE SHOW: The crew of the research submarine Seaview find the seven seas fraught with danger from international spies, mad scientists, monsters from the deep and aliens from space. The sub is owned by its designer, Admiral Nelson and is based at the Santa Barbara headquaters of the Nelson Institute of Marine Research. Although an instrument for oceanographic study, the Seaview is often called in for military use by the U.S. Goverment. INFO: Doubtlessly the most successful of Irwin Allen's four networked series, Voyage was based on the 1961 film starring Walter Pidgeon and Robert Sterling in the roles taken over by Richard Basehart and David Hedison. Besides its lavish special effects, the format of Voyage was flexible enough to allow the writers to write any kind of story from monsters to espionage. The first season, filmed in black and white was successful enough to warrant a second year which would not only be filmed in color, but with a redesigned Seaview. The bridge was linked to the observation nose to allow more action to take place in the formally claustrophobic command deck. A Flying Sub was berthed aboard the Seaview to allow them means of faster transport. Filled with action and top-notch effects the series was another class Sci-Fi show that still remains fondly remembered today.
