PREMISE OF THE SHOW: Two American Scientist get trapped in the Fourth Dimension after entering an experimental Time Tunnel, emerging at crucial momments in the Earths past and future history. INFO: After one series set below the sea and one set beyond the solar system, Irwin Allen adapted the idea of H.G. Well's The Time Machine for his next series The Time Tunnel, which debuted in 1966. Here, a group of scientists tries to demonstrate it's invention-a machine that can transport people back and forth in time-to a U.S. senator who controls their research funds. Impetuous scientist Tony Newman(James Darren), desperate to prove that the still untested machine works, jumps into it and is hurled backward in time. Once inside, he learns that the machine has one particular flaw: it cant bring people back. After swirling through a time vortex, Tony lands on the deck of the "Titanic" in the year 1912 and soon discovers that he has only 14 hours to go before the infamous liner sinks. Back at the Time Tunnel complex, Doug Phillips(Robert Colbert) decides to go back after Newman to see if he can get him off the ship in time. Although the least successful of Irwin Allens four Networked series, it is, especialy today, considered to be the best. The series had high production values, non-stop adventure and excitement, and excellent special effects, which still stand up well today. The cliff-hanger endings were also brilliantly done and you just knew that you had to tune in next week. The show only lasted 3O episodes and just one season, but in that season alone, the Time Travelers encounterd: Robin Hood, Marco Polo, Napoleon, Custer, Billy the kid, Helen of Troy, Lincoln and Rudyard Kipling. For many of the battle scenes, stock footage was used from various epic 2Oth Century Fox films and was brilliantly edited into the episodes so that you could hardly tell. As with his previous series, Allen again got composer John Williams to provide another of his outstanding TV themes. The entire score for the opening episode was also scored by Williams. The Time Tunnel was magnificently photographed by Winton Hoch, and it's elaborate illusions won special effects man, Bill Abbott his third Emmy award for special photograpic effects. The tunnel itself was the most extraordinary effect. It was a drum 9 feet in diameter with a band five feet wide. The whole thing was covered with bits of cellophane and Christmas tinsel. When shot through an ultra-wide angle lens, the result was a dazzling kaleidoscope of "time fragments" flying through the shaft.
