USING LOGiSTiX FOR THE FIRSTIME WITH THE AMIGA Congratulations on your purchase of LOGiSTiX for the AMIGA computer. You are using the latest technology in hardware and software. You will now be able to plan, control and manage more effectively than ever before possible. The following pages contain important information that you need to know prior to installing LOGiSTiX and utilizing it to its full potential. THIS MANUAL ASSUMES YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE AMIGA COMPUTER AND ITS OPERATION. THE AMIGA MANUAL AND THE AMIGA TUTOR CONTAIN INVALUABLE INFORMATION NECESSARY FOR THE SUCCESSFUL USE OF LOGiSTiX. PLEASE READ YOUR DOCUMENTATION CAREFULLY! Read the End User License Agreement and Warranty Registration Card carefully. Please complete the Warranty Registration Card and mail it so that we can provide you with technical support. We may also advise you of additional information. If the warranty card is not returned immediately, we will be unable to provide you with technical support or addition information for LOGiSTiX. Before you use LOGiSTiX on your AMIGA, check that in addition to this guide you have the following items: - Two LOGiSTiX disks: 1 Program Disk 1 Examples Disk - Security protection Dongle - LOGiSTiX Quick Reference Card - End User License Agreement and Warranty Registration Card - Keyboard Template As an advanced computer requires advanced protection, we have chosen "dongle" style software protection so you may now have access to an unlimited numbers of archival backups requiring no special software. This is to protect your investment in LOGiSTiX. This is the only dongle that you have. Keep it in a safe place and do not lose it under any circumstances. It is irreplacable. INSTALLATION OPTIONS Next, using either the workbench or the Command Line Interface (CLI), copy both of the supplied disks. If you don't know how to do this, consult the AMIGA Manual, Chapter 4. You should store the two original disks in a safe location and use the disks you have just created. LOGiSTiX uses a "dongle" to prevent illegal usage of copied disks. The dongle must be plugged into the right hand game socket (marked with a 2) next to the socket used for the mouse. It must be plugged in before installing and running LOGiSTiX. RUNNING LOGiSTiX FROM THE WORKBENCH Place the Program Disk in any floppy disk drive and select on the LOGiSTiX disk icon (click twice with the mouse pointer on the icon). This will open a LOGiSTiX window with the LOGiSTiX program icon shown (a worksheet with a graph). To run the program, double click with the mouse located on the LOGiSTiX worksheet icon. RUNNING LOGiSTiX FROM THE CLI When using a 512K AMIGA system, we recommend that you run LOGiSTiX from the CLI instead of from the WorkBench. This will allow you to use approximately an extra 20K bytes of memory (depending on your add on peripherals) for your worksheet, which will be particularly useful when drawing graphs. To do this place the LOGiSTiX Program Disk in the main floppy disk drive and press the CTRL-A-A keys all at the same time. (The AMIGA A keys are both located at each side of the space bar and are labeled with a red capital A). You are now running under the CLI. You must now set the stack size by typing the following statement exactly: stack 13000 You may now run LOGiSTiX by typing: lgx SINGLE DRIVE SYSTEMS (under CLI or Workbench) When using a single drive AMIGA, we suggest you set the LOGiSTiX /Utilities Prefix command (/UP) to df0: (disk drive names are DF0 and DF1). This will allow you to swap disks and load example files from the Examples Disk using the single disk drive. Another helpful hint is to enter /Load LOGiSTiX (/LL) and then replace the Program Disk with the disk containing the data to be loaded (ie. the Examples Disk). When the data has been read in, be sure to replace the Program Disk in the drive. EXPANDED MEMORY VERSIONS OF LOGiSTiX On the Examples Disk you will find two more copies of LOGiSTiX with their associated icons. These copies work on systems which have 1 megabyte of memory or more. In particular, they are not overlayed, so less time is spent accessing the disk, making the program faster to use. Secondly, the extended version uses the highest resolution of the AMIGA, providing a worksheet with 44 rows and graphics of 640 by 400 pixel resolution. To use either of these, replace the lgx file on the Program Disk with both the lgxl and lgxe files from the Examples Disk (including their icon .info files if you intended to use the workbench. See Chapter 4 of the AMIGA Manual for more information). In summary: Program Command Memory Overlayed? You have been supplied with a template to fit these keys, giving their names for use with LOGiSTiX. They are as follows: LOGiSTiX Key Name Function Key Name HELP F1 FILES F2 RECALC F3 VIEW F4 PAGE LEFT F9 PAGE RIGHT F10 PAGE UP (UP ARROW) and SHIFT PAGE DOWN (DOWN ARROW) and SHIFT AMIGA OPERATING SYSTEM NOTES In the manual, various sections refer to MS-DOS operating system functions such as copying, renaming, deleting files and conventions for file and path names. AmigaDOS is different from MS-DOS and as such LOGiSTiX on the AMIGA differs from the descriptions in this manual in the following areas: Entering File Names P 1-48 to 1-49 Note that under AmigaDOS path separators are forward slashes ("/"); that the default drive names are DF0 and DF1; and that wildcards are not supported. /Utilities P 1-113 to 1-116 In /Utilities, selecting any of Directory, Copy, Rename or Erase will open a new window which allows you direct access to the operating system. For more information on AmigaDOS, consult your AMIGA Manual, Appendix A, or the AmigaDOS manual available from your local AMIGA Dealer. TRUE MULTI-TASKING ENVIRONMENT LOGiSTiX has been designed to work within a multi-tasking environment. This means you can concurrently run other programs while running LOGiSTiX. LOGiSTiX uses its own Intuition screen, which may be moved vertically, by placing the mouse pointer on the top line of the worksheet and using this as a drag bar. To move the screen up or down, hold the left mouse button down while the pointer is located on the drag bar. This exposes another screen area. "TRICKS & HINTS for AMIGA Users" IMPORTANT NOTES CONCERNING AmigaDOS VERSION 1.1 Please read the manual and examine the example programs carefully. What follows is a discussion of several problems you may encounter using AmigaDOS version 1.1. While the bugs are not fatal to the operation of LOGiSTiX, they may cause data loss, so you need to be aware of their existence. We recommend upgrading to AmigaDOS version 1.2 as soon as possible. The following points will help you make full and effective use of your LOGiSTiX program on the AMIGA. Please help us to help you by spending a few moments reading these useful points. Version 1.1 of AmigaDOS has a bug which can cause some very unpleasant problems when LOGiSTiX runs out of memory. We suggest you exercise care when using LOGiSTiX near the full memory capacity of the AMIGA, as certain memory handling functions have unpredictable side effects. In particular, we suggest you save your work regularly so that you know your data is constantly secure. This is very important if you intend using graphics, as some graphs can be very memory demanding. The status line contains the available free memory on the AMIGA. Look at the left hand side of the status line for the updated amount of free memory available. To insure data integrity, we strongly recommend that you save all work when you have only 25K memory remaining. Because of this bug, the example file CASHFLOW.LGX should ONLY to be used with systems having 1M byte of memory or more. The problem lies in the way AmigaDOS handles its memory system. When AmigaDOS runs out of memory, instead of warning you of the fact, it simply causes the program to crash. You can loose data if you run up against the memory full problem! A "Guru" message will appear and you will need to reboot the system to continue. Cashflow will not work with a 512K byte AMIGA (in fact it will crash the system.) Similarly, the GRAPHS.LGX file will not work when LOGiSTiX has been run from the WorkBench. It will, however, work when run from the CLI. This is because 20K more of memory is free when loading directly from the CLI. Also, when drawing graphs, please note that if you drag and/or size the graph window, this will effect the amount of memory required. In particular if you size the window larger, you may find it will not accept your request, but instead it will draw the graph using the same position and size. When using AmigaDOS 1.1, you may encounter the "Guru" message if you try to produce a graph that consumes too much memory. The reason is that there is not enough contiguous memory for the larger graphics screen, and so it draws it using the old window location, without issuing the INSUFFICIENT MEMORY message. ALL THE ABOVE PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED BY USING VERSION 1.2 OF AmigaDOS. SOME ADDITIONAL COMMENTS The current version of the User Documentation includes references to the HOME and END keys which are not available on the AMIGA keyboard. We suggest you use the Goto option (=) and address the cell directly (eg. =a1 for HOME). The worksheet limits are shown in /Utilities Status (/US). Another method is to assign the HOME and END keys to one of the function keys 5,6,7 or 8 by using the /Auto facility, such as: /A E (to edit) F8 Home {RET} (the auto label) >HOM {RET} where {F8} is function key 8 and {RET} is the return key). Please note that as the AMIGA has neither a real time clock or calendar, the operating system functions TELTIM and TODAY (see page 1-113 of the User Guide) are not available, and if used, will be displayed as N/A. Similarily the /Output Configure option of "Date and Time in top margin" is not available. Page 1-43 of the User Guide mentions that the /U Status option will provide you with a summary of the disk usage. This is not available from LOGiSTiX with the AMIGA, but can be obtained by using the operating system utility Info which can be found on your copy of the WorkBench disk. If you intend to drag the LOGiSTiX screen up and down over the WorkBench screen, we suggest you do not move the WorkBench screen lower than three quarters of the full screen. If you do, you may have difficulty draging the LOGiSTiX screen back up over the WorkBench screen, and may be forced to re-boot. A useful hint: If you have resized or moved the graphics window, then this will become the active window. Any keystrokes entered will be sent to this graphics window and will not be "heard" by the worksheet part of LOGiSTiX. To change this, move the mouse pointer to a position on the screen which is outside of the graph window and click once with the left mouse button. This will then make LOGiSTiX "listen" to you. LOGiSTiX is most effectively used in a 1M byte or greater memory AMIGA system. This will allow use of the non overlayed version of LOGiSTiX (which results in better speed and performance), and also allows full use of the AMIGA's multi-tasking capability.
