The Disk Mechanic Version 2.44 Notes for version 2.44: 1. TuneUp has been optimized for better performance on hard disks. Please note that the size of the data cache (set using the cache gadget in TuneUp) can greatly affect the program's performance. Using the default setting of 256K, it takes approximately 12 minutes to TuneUp a standard WorkBench 1.2 floppy disk. WITH A CACHE SIZE OF 512K, RUN TIME DROPS FROM OVER 12 MINUTES TO UNDER 5 MINUTES. TuneUp will not work on hard disk partitions greater than 50 megabytes. 2. The STATUS option has been removed from TuneUp. TuneUp now provides more accurate estimates at run time. 3. The "Install" option has been removed from DoubleBack. DoubleBack now automatically installs (makes bootable) the floppy disks it creates during a back up. 4. A new option has been added to DoubleBack. The "MARK" option (selectable by the 'M' key or the mouse) is used to control the archive bit. With "MARK" selected, DoubleBack will set the archive bit of every file it copies during a back up. With "MARK" unselected (the default), DoubleBack will NOT set the archive bit. 5. DoubleBack now uses the 'Hidden' bit to mark split files, not the 'Read' bit as stated in the manual. 6. The default state of the 'ARC' gadget (one of the protection bits) has been changed. DoubleBack will now copy all files by default, instead of only those files with a clear archive bit. 7. DoubleBack has been optimized for better performance. A single disk of 880K will take approximately 90-100 seconds to back up. Previous versions required 3 minutes per disk. 8. The Disk Repair program cannot restore files that have been partially overwritten. As Amiga DOS sometimes writes over a file at the end of the deletion process, it may be necessary to salvage a single file that has just been deleted. 9. The REPAIR option in Disk Repair should only be used as a last resort: do not try to repair a disk unless it needs it! 10. The CLI utilities can be found in the CLI subdirectory on the disk, not in the root directory as stated in the manual.
