SANITY ------- - News from Sanity by Chaos/Sanity, approved by Mr. Pet, McDeal ARTE. ----- I (Chaos) and Mr. Pet might have some problems with design, and I think there is much to improve, even if we have improved much since our last demo, World of Commodore. But there is another field where we have severe problems: Demo psychology. Due to deadline problems (We finished ARTE ten minutes before the original deadline) and carelessness we didn't thought that many people might reset if they see a picture saying "this is PRACTICALLY the end", and not noticing that it is only PRACTICALLY the end, and that there is one third of the demo still to come. And therefore most of the people simply didn't notice that they just missed perhaps one of the fastest and best realtime vector routines ever (in the eyes of a coder. Other demo freaks might not care about a routine being realtime, rotating in all 3 axes, etc...) in an amiga demo (done by Chaos and McDeal). In other words: We messed it up again, many people, including the party organizers reseted after the second part and didn't noticed that there is a third one to come. The main reason to write this article is to make everybody know that there is this third part, and that you should watch it! But if we are spreading this article, I use the opportunity to write some more stuff about ARTE and my future plans. I want to start with the usual arrogant, selfcentered "spardimerda" stuff, about us and ARTE being the best and why... We tried very hard to make ARTE as compatible as possible. We actually found only 2 Computers at the party place where ARTE crashes, both of them being highly upgraded A3000. I am trying to find the problems, most likely to be found in the Sanity Operating System, so I would be pleased if you write to me if you encounter any problems (with detailed hardware specification) so that we can code a bugfix and to make sure that future demos work. The main problem is, that we try to pull the last out of the machine. It is easy to make a demo run on a 2MB A1200 68020, or on a 1MB A500, supporting only special memory expansions, or even only $c00000-Memory (like some coders do...), but we tried to make it run on ALL Amigas, with ALL CPUs, with enabled caches, with ALL possible memory configurations. All code is relocateable, it will be loaded to real fast memory if possible. You can see this best at the vector routine: It gets faster with real fast mem even on an A2000, and it's fast as lightning on 68030/40. Another thing we are fucking proud of is the size of ARTE: We crunched 3 modules, many, many effects and dozens of pictures and clip art on one disk. We need only about 1.6 kb of crunched data for each second of demo. The most asked question at the party was "only one disk?", although they have only seen 2/3 of the demo. Perhaps this is what distinguishes realtime demos from animations. After all this "Oh we are so proud of this" stuff now some info we are less proud of: Broken Promises is canceled! ----------------------------- More then 2 years ago, shortly after Elysium was finished and I had enough rest, I coded a few routines (that haven't been released yet) that have been totally stunning at that point of time, and that are still very good. I had the Idea of making BP, and I planned to release it at The Party I (!). BP was not as much related to special effects, it was more related to the concept of interaction: Most of the effects can be interactively altered, they run in a (non intuition) Window, Gadgets make it possible to alter resolution, size, details. Effect and Modules from other demos can be loaded (most of the effects in the first part of "World of Commodore" support this feature, ofcourse without window and interaction. ARTE effects are incompatible since they use a slightly different protocol, but I guess I would have make them run with a few "special case treatments") But there were two problems: I spend too much time to make the graphical user environment, the so called "Inyerface" run on an A500. It lead me to some very complex copperlists that were dynamically created, especially because it should not only work, it should also be good-looking. A lot of paper was filled, and I have to apologize to HaVoK who filled disks with test, design and graphics for BP. But the most severe problem was that I didn't actually worked on BP. We were never able to plan our projects well. First I started coding a music disk for Jester, no problem, two month of work I thought, and it took me more then twice as long till I got the last graphics and code to work together. Now I had invented the copper-zoom (102-zoom) for more then 16 pixels, but I used it only in the menu, so I had to code a demo that pulls the effect to it's limit, the "Optimum Fuckup". This took much longer then I expected too, especially since Jester said to me that he made a new music shortly after I finished all the design and timing for the old one (Breakout Remix). After all, the demo was less successful then expected, but in some kind more successful then all other demos because it impressed some guys at NEON enough to ask me if I could code some zoom-routines for their coming project, Mr. Nutz. So one project followed the other: WoC (which did not cost too many time), parts of three games, Mr. Nutz among them, ARTE (which was meant as a small intro and then took half a year for me and more for Mr. Pet), and other small things. Beside being a coder, I finished FOS (school), civil service and some semesters of technical computer science. In other words: I coded on BP only "occasional". All the time BP blocked me that much that I said to some friends: "Either it will be released at The Party III, or it will never be released". At The Party III I even broke that promise, but now, with my thought sorted, I think I made the right decision: Cancel and concentrate on Demos instead of myths. There simply isn't enough time and motivation left to create something that complex. But it was a great experience. A few interviews and rumors, and they actually bought it: I think I am the only coder that became #1 in the Eurocharts without actually releasing anything for more then 6 months! Broken Promises entered the Charts without being released, without even been coded! Some guys claimed that they have made "screen shots" of it and were mighty proud releasing a badly digitised nothing (All they got was an ARTE-Preview by Mr. Pet). The best of all: would you believe a rumor about something called "Broken Promises?". This shows how far you can go! Compatibility in general ------------------------ Perhaps this is the point to write some words about the compatibility discussion that is held in some diskmags and networks: Writing trackmos has no disadvantages towards making "system friendly" demos, even with compatibility in mind! (Except for harddisk installation) Commodore officially tries to supports "Original Chip Set" as long as possible, at least for triple-A. In other words: Read the Amiga Hardware Reference Manual, and hit the Hardware as you like as long as you follow a few rules that are outlined there. But NEVER rely on special configurations (memory, CPU), kill the system carefully or allocate the resources and let the system run on the background, DON'T use absolute addresses and test as much as you can. Commodore won't support ECS or AGA features in AAA, so if you want to use them, you can be sure that your demo will not run on future Amigas. Therefore there is NO SUCH THING as a compatible AGA-Demo. My solution in the future will be to write either AGA-only demos that don't give a damn on triple-A, but where EACH effect would be useless on non-AGA anyway, or to write mixed demos where the AGA-effects are skipped on non-AGA-Amigas and have two copperlist (one AGA, one non AGA) for some effects. These demos should run kinda downgraded on AAA, but at least they run. Please notice: There are computers without AGA, but with fast CPU, therefore you can make a great A1200-Demo without using the AGA-features, and you will get many friends among the turboboard and A3000 users. I will support the A500 in future, even though I might also release a pure AGA-demo. Ofcourse it is BRAINDEAD to make utilities with hardware-code like the good old KefCon and most Trackers. If you are going to make a utility, please try to do it using the OS. Protracker is the best (or better, worst) example. At the beginning there was NO working protracker on the A4000, and even now I have some problems. If you are coding screens, gadgets, mouse and all this by yourself, you have much more work as if you would try to learn the basics of Intuition. Invest your time in doing it right with OS instead of patching around. It is very frustrating to see the Protracker with Hires or Superhires sprites, to get crashes when the ScreenBlanker activates themself and so on. If you use a good utility like Magic User Interface by Stefan Stuntz, then you will save time, gain 100% compatibility and inherit many useful features.
