A-Max II User's Guide Addendum for Version 2.56 15 March 1993 Apple System Versions: Version 2.5 has been tested with Apple System versions up to and including version 7.1. Maximum Mac System Memory Size: The Mac system memory size limit has been increased to 10 Mb with A-Max Version 2.5, however you must use Apple System 7 to address this much RAM. If you are using System 6 or older, you should make sure your "System Memory" display in the Memory Preferences window is set to 8192 K or less. New Preferences Options: There are up to two new options in the Memory Preferences window to control the caches present on 68030 and 68040 processors. The Data Cache option enables this cache on both the 68030 and 68040 and should be left on in most cases. The Copyback Cache option enables this high speed mode of the 68040's data cache. Setting this option on will require you to run Apple System version 7.0.1, and several popular Mac applications require their most recent versions to run with this mode. With the Copyback Cache disabled, you can run Apple System versions 6 and higher and most slightly older Mac applications, with a 68040 accelerator. New Keyboard Mapping: There was one key on the Apple extended keyboard that was previously not emulated - the "=" key on the numeric keypad. The sequence shift - 5 (on the numeric keypad) is now equivalent to typing this key. Speeding A-Max and MS-DOS Disk Access: A-Max II Plus users should hold down a shift key when they insert an A-Max or MS-DOS format diskette, until the drive light comes on. This will skip the often lengthy process of A-Max II Plus deciding the disk is not Mac format. PowerPrint with Serial Printers: The GDT SoftWorks PowerPrint printer drivers don't allow you to configure their serial port output options. If you are outputting to the Amiga parallel port, this is of no consequence, but if you are using a serial printer, A-Max II will restrict PowerPrint's serial output baud rate to that which is set with AmigaDOS's serial preferences program. PowerPrint outputs 1 stop bit, no parity, 8 data bits. Border Blanking: A-Max II users who don't use Commmodore's Extended Chip Set will notice that the border colour is now set to black. Thanks to Chris Brenner who worked out how to do this with little memory overhead. File Transfer II: It is recommended that the File Transfer II program found on the utilities disk NOT be run under MultiFinder. Although the program will run under MultiFinder, it is possible to run into problems with other programs ejecting the AmigaDOS disk. GVP SCSI Driver: The GVP SCSI driver ( "gvpscsi.amhd" ) requires version 3.0 or greater of the GVP EPROM. Contact GVP directly at (215) 337 8770 for further details. Amiga 1000 KickStart Memory: There are some internal memory expansions for the 1000 that will not function when KickStart RAM is write enabled. These are most commonly the 'hack' 512K-1.5MB expansions that are done by piggy backing RAM chips on the 1000 motherboard. If you find that the ADDMEM command crashes when you attempt to add your expansion memory to the system (ie. you have non- auto-configuring memory expansion), you will have to disable the KickStart enabling boot block on the A-Max startup disk. This is done easily by installing a normal boot block on the startup disk with the Workbench INSTALL command. Serial Printer Cables: Any serial cable used for printer connection (eg. for an Apple ImageWriter) should have the hardware handshaking line CTS connected on the Amiga side. Hardware Problems: Problems with the A-Max cartridge reading ROMs, and using the Macintosh disk drive can be the result of defective CIA chips in your Amiga. It is possible that Amiga 3.5' drives continue to function even when these chips are bad, which can be caused by connecting or disconnecting any device to the external disk drive port of the Amiga with the power on. If you are having problems with your A-Max system it is often useful to test the cartridge on another Amiga if you have access to one.
