WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF B.A.D. ----------------------------------- Hello, My name is Mark Hellman and I would like to take a few minutes of your valuable time to tell you a little story. When the Amiga was first born everyone went nuts over it- WOW, what great graphics, STEREO sound, and digitized to boot, what a neat user interface. Then, after working with Amy for a while- Geez, what slow DISKS, the drives make SO MUCH NOISE. Hmm, What happened here? Every time someone talked about the Amiga, sooner or later the SLOW disk speed and drive noise came up. Well after a while I got real sick of hearing people rant and rave about Amy, then put her down because of the disk access speed. At the time (about Sept. 1987) I was working on a hard disk backup utility and had discovered some very interesting things about AmigaDOS. The data was written one way, and read another! After playing around ALOT, I was able to restore the drive so that it was incredibly FAST! After telling a few of my friends about what I was doing, they all asked, can you do it to floppies too? I said sure, no problem! (Grin) After a few months I had a demo version and B.A.D. was born. B.A.D. (Blitz Amy's Disks) is what is called a 'Disk Optimizer'. Basically this means that B.A.D. scans the disk, then optimizes all the information on it in such a way so that when the disk is re-read everything is where it should be for the most efficient access times. Speeds approaching that of a RAM: disk can be and HAVE BEEN achieved. In Fact, B.A.D. will decrease the access time 250-500%! Some disks, which are very fragmented will be up to 1000% faster!! This demo disk was created in the normal way, then it was processed with B.A.D. The disk was then crunched into a file using Warp for easy transport. When unWarped you will have an exact duplicate of the disk I have. Now here is what I want you to do: 1> Format a blank disk 2> Copy all the files and directories from this disk to the disk you just formatted ie. Put this disk in DF0: then put your empty disk in DF1: At the CLI type: COPY DF0: to DF1: ALL OR use your favorite Directory Utility. NOTE: do a FILECOPY, NOT a DISKCOPY!! 3> Make sure both disks are WRITE ENABLED, then from WorkBench open the disk Icon and All the sub-directories on BOTH disks This allows your WorkBench to update it's .info files for maximum speed. Close all the windows and REMOVE both disks from the drives. 4> After the disk Icons have disappeared from the screen put the disks back into the drives. This is to show that the speed-up is ALWAYS there! 5> Now open the ORIGINAL disk (The one created with WARP) Did you notice the drive light didn't even come on? How about the disk you copied to? You should see about a 500% increase in speed on the blitzed disk. 6> Look around on the disks, compare the speed, you should see a 200%-300% increase in speed in the sub directories! How much time could you save in an evening, a week, a year? At this point I'll let the disk speak for the value of B.A.D. I hope you enjoy the disk and the Icons and the SPEED! I'd like to thank the creators of the icons, the creator of WARP who ever you are, and Harv Laser for the disk with the Icons, and of course YOU for taking the time to do this comparison. B.A.D.
