Armand Joseph Fabre (1844-1916) first proposed celebrating Joan of Arc's
    feast as a national holiday in 1884.  He insisted on solemn celebration
    as essential to public education and patriotic revival.  Though the
    proposal was gaining increasing acceptance, heated public controversy
    accompanied the May 1894 celebration.  Political unanimity on the issue
    dissolved, with governmental leaders dubious, free-masons bitter, and
    Catholics and atheists unreconciled.  The author summarizes the Senate
    debate of 8 June 1894, gives the arguments of the proponents and
    opponents, and analyzes the affirmative vote which the Chamber of
   Deputies did not ratify.  Primary documents; 2 appendixes, 80 notes.
