V2.0c September 1990 The following additions, corrections, and clarifications have been made to the Your Family Tree Version 2.0 users manual since it went to press: For your own reference, you may wish to print this file to your printer. Page 19 - Search Tutorial The "Try Again" gadget has been renamed the "No" gadget. When a match is found, you will be asked if the record which was found is the one you were searching for. If it is not, select "No", and the program will continue searching. The "OK" gadget has been renamed "Yes". Page 22 - Individual Screen - Residence field Page 53 - Mailing Labels Mailing Labels can contain up to five lines of text. When a label is printed for an individual, the top line of the label contains the individual's Given #1 (first name) followed by the Surname. The address is taken from the Residence field on the Individual Screen. For Mailing Labels to print properly, the vertical bar "|" (shifted backslash) should be used in the Residence field to designate a carriage return on the printed label. Ex. Separating street address; Apartment or P.O. Box number; city, state and ZIP code; Country; etc. An individual with the following information: Surname : Smith Given #1 : John Residence: 2901 Brodhead Road | Apt. # 5-A | Aliquippa, PA 15001 will have a label printed: John Smith 2901 Brodhead Road Apt. # 5-A Aliquippa, PA 15001 Page 34 - Select Next - Select Previous Select Previous should be listed as a separate item following Select Next. Page 39-40 - Viewing Pictures - Printing It is possible to print a picture being viewed by pressing "P" while the picture is displayed on the screen. For best results, we still recommend using a paint or graphics program. To return to the Picture List Manager, left-click the mouse in the upper left corner of the screen. Page 49 - Searching - Link The "Link" setting of the highlighted criteria on the Search Criteria List screen can be toggled between "AND", "OR", and "STOP" by pressing the "L" key. Page 49 - Searching For a Blank Field To search for a blank field, such as a blank Date of Death (useful in locating living individuals), the "Complete Compare/ Partial Compare" option must be set to "Complete Compare". Page 53 - Build ID List File With SEARCH ID List files built using SEARCH are saved as ASCII text files. An ID List file consists of either the word "Individual" or "Family" (designating the type of IDs being listed) followed by the IDs, one per line. An ID List file containing individuals with IDs of 7, 13, 24, 56, and 89 would look like this: Individual 7 13 24 56 89 Any ID List file can be loaded into a text editor or word processor and modified by changing, adding, or deleting IDs in the list, if desired. You can also create Individual or Family ID Lists with a text editor or word processor by using the above guidelines, and saving the file as an ASCII text file, using the .SRCH filename extension. An ID List file created in this manner is identical to an ID List file created by SEARCH. Page 55 - Report Output to a File Reports are saved to disk in ASCII format. A report file can be imported to any word processor, text editor, or desktop publishing program which allows importing of ASCII text. Reports to Screen Known bug: When the report is complete, selecting Cancel will sometimes cause a crash. Use the Green gadget to return to the Report Selection Screen. Page 70 - Pedigree Chart Sample The Pedigree Chart has undergone a minor revision since the manual went to press. Each Place (of birth, death, etc.) is printed on the line BELOW the corresponding Date, allowing more complete printing of Place information. By disabling the "Print Dates" option on the Report Control window, the report can be printed with names only. Note: To print an example of a Pedigree Chart (either regular or compressed), use reference ID 1. Page 74 - ??? Qualifier This Qualifier can also be entered as a single ? followed by any 2 characters or digits. This feature can be used to indicate uncertainty. For example, if you are unsure of a month, a date may be entered as "?MO 01 JAN 1990". "?YR 05 APR 1950" can be entered if you are unsure of the proper year. Page 74 - Additional Date Format If a date is entered as month-year (MMM yyyy), a day number of 01 will be assumed. Ex. a date entered as "July 1989" is printed as "01 JUL 1989". Please note that, if the Nonstandard Date Warnings option is enabled, dates entered as month-year MUST be entered using the name of the month (or the first 3 letters). Dates entered using the number of the month followed by the year (such as "03 1988") WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED and will produce incorrect results. Page 75 - Invalid Dates With Nonstandard Date Warnings enabled, a warning will be displayed if you enter an invalid date, such as February 30 or September 31, even if the date is entered in a recognizable date format. ----------------------------------------------------------------- UPGRADING USERS ONLY: DATA FILE CONVERSION Data files in Your Family Tree Version 2.0 are slightly larger than data files in YFT Version 1.1 and 1.2. The conversion utility creates new data files in the 2.0 format, and leaves the old files intact. New files will NOT be copied on top of old ones. WHEN RUNNING THE DATA FILE CONVERSION UTILITY, USE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR DATA FILES!!! In the event that something should happen while the conversion is taking place, the data may NOT be recoverable! If you are running Your Family Tree using floppy disk drives, the best way to accomplish the conversion is to place the diskette containing the old (source) files in 1 drive and a new (destination) disk in another. The YFT 2.0 files will be copied to the second disk. NOTE: If you have a data file from YFT 1.1 or 1.2 which takes up more than 90% of a data disk, the file created for YFT 2.0 will too large to fit on a single diskette. A hard disk drive will be necessary for you to continue use of YFT. If you are running Your Family Tree using a hard disk drive, make sure that you have free space on the hard drive greater than the amount of space taken up by your old data files. If you have difficulty converting your data files, and/or you don't have sufficient disk space or available RAM to perform the conversion, contact us at MicroMaster. Or you can send your data disk(s) to MicroMaster along with $5.00 to cover the cost of processing and return shipping. ----------------------------------------------------------------- MicroMaster is currently developing a supplemental utilities package for use with Your Family Tree Version 2.0. This package is largely the result of suggestions we have received from users of the program, ideas from local genealogy consultants, as well as a few ideas that our programmers came up with themselves. These either came to our attention too recently to be included in YFT Version 2.0, or were temporarily put on hold because of other difficulties we have experienced in the development of Version 2.0. This package will include: - Full support of the GenComm data exchange standard. This will allow data file transfer between Your Family Tree and other genealogy programs/utilities. - Import, export, and merge data between files - Multiple page report showing the entire family structure - Relation calculator -- Determine the relationship between any 2 individuals in the database. - Numerous statistical functions allowing you to determine: - Average age of individuals in a family - Average age of individuals in the database - Oldest and Youngest person in the database - Number of Multiple Births (twins, triplets, etc.) - Number of Multiple Marriages - Individuals and Families with incomplete data - Average number of children per family - Average age at marriage - Average number of marriages per person - And more... Pricing and availability of this package have not been determined at this time. As a registered user of YFT, you will be notified when this utilities package is available. ---------------------------------------------------------------- MicroMaster has plans for minor upgrades to YFT 2.0 along with another major revision in the next few years. Registered users will be notified of updates by mail. Prices for upgrades and/or revisions will be set at the time of announcment. If you have suggestions or comments for improvements to YFT, please send them to us in writing, since we record each new feature on a "wish list" that will be used when design begins for the new version. UPGRADE POLICY: Very minor upgrades (bug fixes) will be FREE. To recieve the latest minor revision, mail your original Green diskette to Micromaster, postage prepaid, and we will copy the new version to your diskette and mail it back to you. MicroMaster also reserves the right to change and/or modify this policy at any time. In the future and/or for a more involved revsion we may charge a small fee for the upgrade to cover our duplication time, handling, and shipping. Prices and policies for Major upgrades will be announced at the time of the upgrade announcment. ----------------------------------------------------------------- We at MicroMaster have received countless calls and letters from owners of Your Family Tree, as well as other Amiga owners, inquiring about compatibility between Your Family Tree Version 2.0 and Commodore's new Workbench 2.0. The correspondence between the version number of Your Family Tree and the version number of Workbench is PURELY COINCIDENTAL. To the best of our knowledge, Your Family Tree Version 2.0 does run under Workbench 2.0. It does not, however, take advantage of the features available with this new version of the Amiga operating system. We do not guarantee the stability of Your Family Tree, or the integrity of data files when running under Workbench 2.0. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ USE ON A HARD DISK To use YFT V2.0 on your hard disk, copy the entire contents of the original YFT disk (sample data files optional) to your hard disk. For clarity it is suggested that you use a partition or subdirectory for all your YFT files and programs.
