Summary of changes as of GPFax Release 1.01 22th January 1992 In our efforts to continually improve GPFax we have added or changed the following since the manual was printed. 1. Fax Resolution GPFax will now automatically receive faxes in 'fine' mode if requested by the transmitting station. For example, many weather faxes are transmitted in fine mode. A fax in 'fine' mode has double the vertical resolution and is 196 dpi. GPFax automatically detects between fine and standard mode faxes when printing and will adjust the resolution and aspect ratios accordingly. When viewing such faxes, GPFax will attempt to allocate sufficient CHIP memory to allow a view of the complete fax. This may require up to 700K of CHIP memory and may not always succeed. If the allocation fails GPFax will progressively fall back as described in the manual and allocate the largest block available. This is an automatic feature requiring no use intervention. 2. MANUAL Fax Transmission Since GPFax allows manual reception of faxes from the main menu, we have added the complementary function to allow manual transmission. This allows you to send faxes to people who do not have their fax machine on-line permanently. You must dial them manually with your phone, ask them to start their fax machine in answer mode, then tell GPFax to send the required faxes. To manually transmit a fax, select the required faxes as normal but enter the following sequence as the number to dial (either direct or in the phone book) and select the 'Now' gadget from the transmit options. enter MAN! as the first 4 characters of the number. You may also enter the telephone number for reference if you wish. For example MAN! 5557676 If this 'MAN!' sequence is detected as the first four characters of a phone number, GPFax will prepare the necessary page headers and cover pages and make ready to send the fax. When the you hear the remote system fax tones, select the 'Send' gadget from the displayed requester. 3. IFF Images - colour luminosity There was a minor problem with GPFax when converting iff images using the convert to fax option where the colour luminosity was not taken into account. This is now changed. GPFax now detects the relative colour intensity of black and white so that what you see on the DeluxePaint screen is what you get on the fax page. 4. IFF Images - multi colours When using the convert to fax option, if the iff image has more than one bit-plane (more than two colours), GPFax will now give you the option to strip out the first bit-plane from the image. This only applies when used in interactive mode (i.e. from Convert to Fax). If iff conversion is done as part of the cover page or with imbedded control codes in text files, the image will be stripped automatically. 5. IFF Images - Aspect GPFax does not aspect correct iff images when using the Convert to Fax option. If specific aspect correction is required, use the printer driver option and print the image direct from DeluxePaint. 6. AREXX Release 1.0 of GPFax does not contain an AREXX port. Work is underway to implement full AREXX in a later release. This will allow complete control of GPFax from an AREXX script or from other software. 7. Modem Hardware and Chipsets From version 1.01, GPFax has been fully tested on the fax/modem chipsets from both the XR and Rockwell as used by Maestro and Supra. 8. EXIT String If no exit string is entered into the configuration (as default) GPFax will automatically send ATZ when 'Quit' is selected. This is to reset the modem back to the previously saved setting from NVRAM so that 'normal' communications modes are restored. 9.
