Innovation Host & Terminal Manual ================================= I REALLY hate writing documentation. So don't bitch. Send me money if you want a real manual. KeyWord Protection ================== When you load Innovation, a screen will be displayed, prompting you to enter a KeyCode. Each month and year until the end of time has it's own code. Enter this code (supplied) to gain access to the system. Providing an improper code will cause the system to shut down. If you have not registered your copy of Innovation, doing so will provide you with the appropriate codes to enter. Lock System - Host Only ======================= You can never have too much security! Therefore, another Innovation function is the LOCK SYSTEM utility. This will turn off all menus and blank the screen on the host's side. This is useful for extended absences, or when you recieve a tip while travelling abroad that the RCMP is on it's way to your house to search for "warez"! It's not the most secure protection in the world, but it will make it much harder to log in without authorization, as it becomes a matter of decrypting both your own password you've locked the system with, and the Innovation KeyWord protection you despise so much. Also effective against Van Eck spy technology and little brothers fucking around with your computer system. Use the "UnLock System" menu to enter the password again and get back into your system. DO NOT FUCKING FORGET THE PASSWORD! In addition to your pull-down menus, it's also available from the maintainance menu while online. Screen SetUp - Host Only ======================== When there is a remote user online, Innovation will display only black and white, to save processor time (this really speeds things up when using fast modulators and multiple lines). A local log-in will show full color. Of course, the remote user always gets color if he or she can support it. Most function (non-help) pull-down menus are marked with a number to ease location. Line Attendant - Terminal Only ============================== This Terminal feature is like a micro-BBS. It sends a one-line message and accepts another one-line message to and from data callers, and records the dates and times of all calls. Believe me, this comes in handy. Membership Records ================== Each user of your system is assigned a block of information containing the following data: PSEUDONAME (An alias, you can demand real names if you desire) COMMON NAME (Real name) BIRTHDATE (Use this to restrict adult services, etc.) POSITION (You may designate this as a profession, eg. DOCTOR) PASSCODE ACCESS LEVEL (From 0 to 9) ZENNY (Credits remaining on the user's account) ADDRESS PHONE NUMBER SEXUALITY (Male/Female) CREDIT CARD ID NUMBER LAST CALL DATE LAST CALL TIME NUMBER OF CALLS MESSAGES WRITTEN MAIL OUTSTANDING (How many private messages wait for the user) OTHER INFO (A note you can use for additional information) Prompts ======= Prompts (text that asks a user for some input) can be modified by using the utility in the maintainance section. Member Profiles =============== The Innovation:Profiles/ directory contains the membership profiles, which are written at application and shown to all users when viewing the user list. The filename consists of the user's real name. Changing A User's Personal Statistics ===================================== This can be accomplished in three ways. While a user is online, a System Operator (providing the system is not `locked') may alter the user's information simply by pulling down the menu marked with his PseudoName, selecting the appropriate bit of data (the current values are also displayed), then entering the information from the keyboard. This won't, of course, work when nobody is online, however you can edit the information after the user has disconnected. The user information pull-down menu will appear as soon as a user enters his or her PseudoName. A user with access to the maintainance utilities may do this remotely as well. All users are also able to edit certain information regarding themselves (their telephone numbers, addresses, etc.) from the main menu by pressing `?'. This eliminates constant nagging from users to have their PseudoNames and other information changed, and lets you ensure an accurate supply of information about your users. Non-static information (names, addresses, etc.) can also be printed out to an attached printer via the appropriate pull-down menu item. System News (Host Only) ======================= This is shown after a successful login and is also available from the main menu. The data displayed are, in order: 1. The current user's access level, position, and ZENCOR status. 2. The network usage, number of calls to system and by user. 3. The message exchange status, number of bullitens and EMessages for user. 4. The previous caller and his logout comment, if any. 5. The user's previous call date and time. 6. The System Operator's status. 7. Security status (system locked/unlocked). 8. The user's credit status. 9. Any users that are celebrating birthdays. 10. The text file "Innovation:Text/ZCS-Text_NewsHeader". 11. The text file "Innovation:Text/ZCS-Text_News". Text Archives ============= This feature enables you to maintain a library of Innovation-format (ASCII or ANSI) text files for your users to view. Each document must reside in the Innovation:Archives/ directory and have the filemask "ZCS-Text_...". Each file may be assigned an access level and a Zenny cost to the reader of the file. System Operator Page ==================== This feature allows a user to summon the SysOp for a conversation. If the SysOp has set his pager off, the user will be notified of this, and will be asked to forward an electronic message instead. The user may, however, request an emergency page at any time. A voice and (if you have designated your printer online) beeps from your printer will notify you of a user's need to talk with you. The screen will also turn red and a window will display the user's name and reason for paging you. These will disappear when you engage in a conversation, or when the user disconnects. A user may page you several times in one online session. All paging attempts are also appended to the system activity log. The page option is `C' from the main menu. Sending EMail To The System Operator ==================================== By pressing W at the main menu, a user may send a message to the SysOp. This is simply electronic mail, except that it is free of charge. Remember to set your SysOp name to your user account name... otherwise this message could, very embarrassingly, be sent to the first user on your list. Electronic Mail =============== This lets your users forward private messages to each other. They may also choose to send `ZCheques' or credits with the message. User Listings ============= By pressing O from the main menu a user may search for users with a search pattern by PseudoName. They will also be shown the user's profile. Only high-level members will view information such as telephone numbers and addresses. The Phreak's PhoneBook ====================== This is a specially-installed (at your request) module which allows phreaks to keep a large database of information at their fingertips, to spread around to other elite individuals or to keep for themselves. This gives you, the SysOp, the benefit of having the information at your disposal, and as well, the user of the system will not be obliged to record incriminating information at his or her residence. Directories can be printed out (if you designate your printer as AVAILABLE) in two formats : compressed and easy-read. The four-byte labels allowed for each entry's type are as follows: DATA - A BBS or computer network. EXTN - An extender, such as MetroPhone. DIVR - Diverter. VMBX - VoiceMailBox, answering service, etc. POTS - Plain old telephone service. LOOP - Testing loop. TOLL - A toll-charge (900/976-type or credit card operated) to fuck with. RECD - A recording. SWEP - Sweep tone. The Card Shop ============= Another module, similar to the Phreak's Phonebook, acts as a credit card / calling card / ID card database. The Eliteness Exam (Host Only) ============================== This module tests a user to see how much he knows about `elite' topics such as phone system fraud and software piracy. It's entered automatically when applying for access on the system and may be configured to other purposes by editing the appropriate file with a text editor. Generic Password Database (Terminal Only) ========================================= This obvious yet somehow overlooked feature is, as far as I know, the first of it's kind. It allows you to compile a list of common passwords, such as "HELL", "FUCK", and the like. When you have a big-ass list built up (trade the files with your friends!) the system can automatically select random passwords from this list & transmit 'em for hacking purposes. Mega Tone Generator (Terminal Only) =================================== This allows you to generate, quickly and easily (and effectively, if you have a jade-box, contact ZENCOR to get one): - Silver box dialing tones. - Green box tones (coin return, ringback, coin collect). - Red box tones (quarter, dime, nickel). - 1000hz loop-style test tones. - Phony call-waiting tones. Innovation Files ================ Your disk labeled Innovation contains the following files, which must appear on that disk for the various features to operate. The sub-directory BackUps also may contain copies of essential files in case of a fuck-up. These will automatically replace the screwed-up files, so ENSURE THESE ARE NOT CORRUPTED! For example, if you have accidentally deleted your "ZCS-Text_News" file, you could do something from CLI such as "COPY Innovation:BackUps/Text/ZCS-Text_News Innovation:Text/" to restore the file. Automatic replacement (copying of the backup file into the normal operating directory) takes place only on essential files, such as preferences, user listings, etc. Any corruption of messages, will not cause a replacement (this is to save the massive amount of disk space this would require). Text - To configure these files, use the Innovation text editor ONLY. ZCS-Text_EliteTestIntro : Displayed when beginning the eliteness test. ZCS-Text_NoApplication : Displayed when somebody refuses to apply for access. ZCS-Text_MainMenu(2-9) : Main service menus for each access group. ZCS-Text_PNamePrompt : Requests a new user's alias. ZCS-Text_News : Events and announcements from System Operators. ZCS-Text_ProfilePrompt : Asks a new user to write his personal profile. ZCS-Text_NewsHeader : Headlines the news text. ZCS-Text_PhreakMenu : If applicable, this is the phreaker's goodies menu. ZCS-Text_PreLogInText : Text shown to all callers before the title. ZCS-Text_PhoneNumPrompt : Requests a new user's phone number. ZCS-Text_PositionPrompt : Requests a new user's occupation. ZCS-Text_PhreakInfo : A tutorial for the phreaking utilities. ZCS-Data_Log : System activity log. ZCS-Data_MembershipRecords : Contains information on your system's users. ZCS-Data_DocsAvailable : Information about archive text files. ZCS-Data_SetUp : Basic information about your system. ZCS-Data_OmniMessage : Up to 50 different one-line comments. ZCS-Data_MessageInfo : Contains information about your messages. Error-Handling ============== With the ingenious (how modest I am!) structure of the Innovation system, complete crashes are VERY rare. If there is a severe problem, the system will handle it in the following manner: 1 If the system preferences file is corrupted, it will attempt to replace it with the one from the BackUps directory. If this fails, the system will shut down. 2 Not really an error, it's just a request to make a backup of the SetUp file. 3 Similarily not an error, a request to backup the membership records. 0 If any unidentified error occurs, the system will shut down. There will be, whenever possible, a red screen and warning window, as well as a system log entry, telling you what has happened. Always, always, always report any "Unknown!" errors to me, and I'll fix 'em up! RecoveryMode = An error has occured, this determines how to handle it. Response$ = A general short-term response from a local/remote user. Rings = The total number of times the phone has rung. Size = The limit of the terminal's local line input gadget. StartTime$ = What time does the system start accepting calls? StopTime$ = What time does the system stop accepting calls? SysOp$ = The name of the System Operator. SysOpStatus$ = What the SysOp is doing, where he is, etc. Verify$ = Short-term verification flag.
