You could also use the Dynamic Range operator, but the additional rendered frames will increase storage requirements. However, compositing and image processing effects may cause colors to get too hot anyway, requiring the Dynamic Range operator. @endnode ##======================================================================== @node Operators "Effects Operators" EFFECT OPERATORS High Quality ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some operators have a "High Quality" option. When active, the resulting effect will be rendered at the best quality using more intensive routines; however, the effect will take longer to calculate. Operator Inputs ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Most operators require one input, although some require two. (A few can use one or two). In an RPN Time Line a one-input operator works on the first video layer above it. This could be a scene or the output from another operator. Operators that require two inputs take the two layers of video immediately above them, generally in the order of highest then lowest. This does not have to be the two proceeding lines. Particularly in the case that one or both of it's inputs are other operators. You must examine the stacks. (see "RPN Stacks" on page 67) Not a Full Plate ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If the end result of your effects creates an image that is smaller than your project image size, you must compose it over something--even if that is a black background. This can occur with scaling, rotating, etc. If you don't, you'll get a wrong-image-size error. Effect Module Reference ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Note that some of the explanations only relate to how things work for the RPN mode. ALPHA (Motion-capable) Allows you to set the level of transparency. The alpha'd output must be composed over another video source using the Compose operator. See also the above discussion on alpha channel. BACKGROUND (Motion-capable) This is an image generator. It has no input, but serves as a scene because it has an output. If the Size setting is set to Project, the output will be the same as defined in the Project Settings window. However, size is also motion capable. The bottom half of the window defines the output color and alpha value. Note that because there is an alpha setting, this operator may not always be used as a "background" and may indeed be the foreground video. When used in the foreground with a low alpha setting, it will tint the background video. Hint Use a background operator as a drop shadow. Simply give it a dark color, make it the same size as a scaled-down scene, and give it a low alpha value. Then compose it under the scaled-down scene, offset a little to, say, the bottom-right. If you really wanted to get tricky you could have a moving drop shadow using the ColorToGrey, Scale, and Alpha operators instead of the background operator. BORDER This operator draws a border around the image. You can set the color, the thickness, and even give the border an alpha value. Setting the Border cycle gadget to Inside makes the border start at the edge of the image and go inward. Setting it to Outside makes it go outward. Outward can generally only be used on something that has been scaled down. Otherwise it creates an image that is too large and you'll get an wrong-image-size error. This will not occur however, if you are also compositing the Border output onto another image. COLORDEPTH (Motion-capable) This lets you reduce the colors of a scene. The Depth relates to the number of levels for each of the RGB values. The lowest Depth setting 2, allows eight colors (2 x 2 x 2), while 50 allows 125,000 colors (50 x 50 x 50). COLORTOGREY Turns color video into grayscale. Hint Alternatively, you could have lowered the Chrominance setting before capturing the video and achieved a similar effect without rendering. (see "Video Options" on page 43) COMPOSE (Motion-capable) This composes two images with each other. It has to be used if the output of an effect is not full size (like Scale). Then, you need to define a background (a scene or a Background operator) and compose the smaller image onto the full-size one. Compose uses two video inputs above it. The first video found above the operator is the background and the next one found above that (the foreground) is composed over the background. When the horizontal and vertical position sliders are both set to 0, there is an imaginary "reference point" in the top-left corner of the screen. The Reference Mode cycle gadget defines which corner of the foreground video is at this reference point. Move the horizontal position slider to the right, to move the reference point right; move it left to move the point left. Move the vertical position slider to the right, to move the reference point down; move it left to move the point up. 100 percent is one full picture width/height. (Note: It is very possible to get the same effect using different Reference points by adjusting the position sliders.) The following illustration shows the reference point at 0,0 and where the foreground would be using the different Reference Modes. The darker box represents the monitor screen. +-----+-----+ | R-B | L-B | | +-----+ | | | Ctr | | +--|--X==|==+ | | " | " | +-----+ " | R-T " L-T " +-----+=====+ X is the reference point (0,0) Bottom right box (L-T) is screen. CROP (Motion-capable) This operator "crops" out a rectangle piece of the image using the four edge settings. Each edge moves relative to the top-left corner of the image. As such, the Right edge must be greater than the Left edge and the Bottom greater than the Top. The percentages are a percent of the width or height. The cropped section of the image does not retain its position; the output becomes that size. Thus, if using the Compose operator, for example, you will have to position it accordingly. DELAY This holds a field longer, generating a video that plays less than the normal frames-per-second, yielding a "strobe light" effect. This is not a slow-motion effect; the scene will still play the same length of time. The lowest setting is closest to normal and the highest is the most extreme setting. Setting of 2 or 3 will give video that homemade look, used frequently in those "real-stories" TV shows. DYNAMIC RANGE This operator sets the minimum and maximum RGB color values allowed in the video. The Clip mode will just reset values exceeding the limit to the limit values. The Scale mode will gracefully scale them back, yielding a more natural result. Note: Scale may affect colors not exceeding the limits. Dynamic Range can be especially important when recording to VHS tape because higher color values tend to bleed more with this low-end format. This should be more of a factor with the output from rendered effects. As such, this is more for color correction, than a special effect. Although, it can be used to give video a "washed out" look. FADE This operator can fade a scene in, fade a scene out, and fade from one scene to another. The Through setting fades the first video above the operator to the next one above that. Reverse does the opposite. FLIP This effect makes the two video inputs look like they are on a double- sided sheet that gets turned vertically or horizontally around. FREEZE This "freezes" the first field it detects for the length of the operator. A great effect if you want to have a still at the end of a scene. If the freeze operator extends past the end of the scene containing the frozen frame, and there are no more video layers, you must place a "dummy" scene (or the Background operator) on a line above the Freeze operator. The dummy scene will not be displayed, although its audio will be heard, if not muted. MASK (Motion-capable) This creates an alpha channel for a defined color range. Sort of a digital chromakey effect. First you define a RGB color. The tolerance level specifies a plus or minus range around this color, if any. You can then set a separate Alpha value for a color that falls within the range and one that falls outside the range. MIRROR Use this to mirror a scene vertically, horizontally, or both. For example, a vertically mirrored image would look upside down. MOSAIC (Motion-capable) This give the video a blocky look at low settings and a harsh and ultimately unrecognizable result at high settings. Low settings look like an image that has been blown up in size. NEGATIVE This give a "film negative" look to the video. NOISE This generates video that consists of either color or black and white noise. The level of detail generated is severe and, therefore, is nearly unplayable because it can barely be compressed using JPEG. One use for Noise is as a background using a low alpha for quick flips. Quick flips can cause a FiFo error because of the drastic change in datarate. The noise helps maintain datarate. Such a background would require, from top to bottom, Noise, Alpha, Background, and Compose operators. NOP This the No Operations operator. It does absolutely nothing, but still requires rendering! It is more or less a developer's tool. QUICKSCALE This effect scales the image very quickly, but allows only fixed ratios of 25, 33, and 50 percent. RELIEF This give the video a grayscale "relief" look, like it was chiseled out of stone. The Light setting allows you to set the general direction of the implied light source. ROTATE (Motion-capable) Allows you to rotate video in two different directions. Can also be used to scale video. Spinning picture-in-picture effects can be accomplished with Rotate. The Peak slider allow you to slant the rotating image with 0 percent being no slant and 50 percent being maximum. You can independently set the beginning (First) and the ending (Last) angle, and scale. SCALE (Motion-capable) This lets you freely scale an image using pixels or percentage values. You can independently set the beginning (Start) and the ending (Final) values. Note that you can scale up larger than 100 percent. SHIFT This effect slides in one video over another. The first video found above the operator is the background and the next one above that is the foreground. The Shift In mode slides the foreground in as if it were covering the background. The Shift Out mode wipes the foreground in as if it were pushing the background out of the way. The Shift Both mode combines the two, and slides the foreground in as if it were pushing the background out of the way. The Shift cycle gadget determines the direction of the slide. (also see Wipe) TIMECODE Composes the MovieShop Time Line timecode into the video. The Pick Font button brings up a font requestor to allow you to pick any Amiga font. The RGB sliders let you pick the percentages for those three colors. The X and Y positions are set relative to the top-left corner. The Darken setting allows you to darken a rectangular background for the time code. Antialiasing will reduce jaggies in the Time Code text. TITLE This is a true digital character generator and adds text to a single video source. The source is any ASCII text file, which must be defined using the Select File button which brings up a file requestor. The Scroll option, when available, will automatically scroll the text up from the bottom. Otherwise, the text file is centered vertically on the screen and only the portion that fits will be visible. For the following modes, text is pure white. A line with only a carriage return will start the text alignment/size cycle again. > Centered - Centers each line in the file. The first line is Times 24 point, and the following lines are 18 point. > Closing Sequence - Aligns the first line in the file to the left of the center of the screen. The following lines are aligned to the right of the center of the screen. Left-aligned text is Times 24 point and right-aligned is 18 point. This style is often used in closing credits. > Face To Face - Aligns the first line in the file to the far left and the following lines to the far right. Left-aligned text is Times 24 point and right-aligned is 18 point. > Baseline - Scrolls the text file line by line from right to left at the bottom of the screen, like a "news flash." > Credit Titles - Similar to Centered, but a small font is used for the first line in the file and a large font for the following lines. The Free mode is a manual mode that allows you to embed special control codes that format the displayed text. You are allowed to define up to four columns for the text to appear in. Each line in the file is displayed left to right in each column, top to bottom. If you want to skip a column, insert a blank line. The overall default is white centered text in one column. The following codes are allowed: > \Align [Left | Right | Center] [n] Left is the default alignment. This code sets the text justification within column 'n' (0 to 3). If Column number is omitted, 0 is assumed. Separate \Align codes must be used to define each desired column. > \Color [r] [g] [b] [a] Sets the font color using RGB values. 'a' is alpha value: 0 is transparent and 255 is solid. > \Direction [Up | Left | Standstill] Sets the scroll direction of the text. > \Distance x The distance between lines in pixels. > \Font [Fontname] [Size] [B] [U] Sets the font and size to be used. B and U are for Bold and Underlined. > \Rows [x0 w0 x1 w1] [x2 w2] [x3 w3] This defines the left edge and width for columns 0 to 3. All numbers are in percent of screen width. For left edge, 0 is extreme left and 100 is extreme right. The width value represents a percentage of the screen width. You must at least define columns 0 and 1, if you use this command. The width of a column basically affects how the text will appear using the different alignment settings. Note: MovieShop error requestors refer to columns as rows, and numbered 1 to 4. > \TopMargin x (Only valid if \Direction Left command used.) Sets where the text line should scroll on the monitor. Range is from 0 to 100 (percent). 0 is very top and 100 is very bottom. > \\ [Text] Line for comments. A valid Title text file must begin with a comment line. Example Here is an example Title text file: \\This will illustrate the Free Text format. \Rows 10 25 38 25 65 25 \Align Left 0 \Align Center 1 \Align Right 2 \Color 100 100 200 255 \Direction Up \Distance 40 \Font Helvetica 24 B Left Justified Centered Right Justified \Font Times 36 B \Color 200 100 100 80 \Rows 25 50 50 50 \Align Center 0 Big Centered Text \Font Times 20 B Small Centered Text Output will look something like: +---------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | |LeftJustified Centered RightJustified| | Big Centered Text | | Small Centered Text | | | | | | | | | | | +---------------------------------------+ TRAPEZIUM (Motion-capable) Independently compresses/expands two opposing sides of an image. For a Vertical projection you can change the left and right sides. For a Horizontal projection, you can change the top and bottom. The Flip option flips the image upside down. Settings can be set using a percentage of the image size or in pixels. The output is always placed in the top left corner of the screen. There are independent beginning (Start) and ending (Final) settings. WIPE The first video above the operator is the background and the next one above that is the foreground. This operator wipes the foreground over the background. The Mode cycle gadget sets the direction of the wipe. There is no position change in either of the two images. COMMANDS Nearly every function in the MovieShop interface can be controlled using special commands. MovieShop commands can be used in several different ways: Individual commands can be run using the Execute Command (RIGHTAMIGA+E) in the Windows menu. This brings up a little window in which you can enter one-line commands. Individual commands can be typed one after another using the provided ARexx script, Shell.rx. Commands can be used in an ARexx script. The MovieShop ARexx port is called MOVIESHOP. Commands can be included in a MovieShop script. This is similar to an ARexx script except it can only contain MovieShop commands and must begin with the line #MOVIESHOP. These execute faster than real ARexx scripts, but are not as versatile. Both MovieShop and ARexx scripts can be added to the User menu using the Add Macro function in that same menu. You can also assign scripts or even individual commands to definable keystrokes using the Macros function in the Windows menu. Argument Parameters ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Arguments are the keywords and other information that follows a command. Except for "switches" and "keywords", arguments are generally replaced by a string or value. (Strings that contain spaces should be enclosed in quotation marks.) The following codes are used to give you more information about an argument: /A The argument is always required. /F Final argument (rest of line) /N A numeric argument is expected. /A/N A numeric argument is always required. /S The argument is a switch. /M Multiple arguments are accepted. /K The option's keyword must be given. No /-code indicates the argument is optional. = This indicates that the two arguments are interchangeable. If a command is immediately followed by a question mark (?), all of the arguments will be displayed. Use the Force ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Force switch, when available, will force a command to execute, suppressing any informational or error-checking requestors. The only caveat is that you should be sure you want the command to execute no matter what. Return Codes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The general RC codes are as follows: 0 = OK 5 = Warning, cancel in file requestor, etc. 10 = Error. Command could not be completed. 20 = Fatal error. Wrong or missing arguments. -1 = Fail. No MovieShop command. Result Variable ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If the RC code is 0, then the ARexx RESULT variable will return data appropriate for the command. (Note: For RESULT to operate properly, you must include the line 'Options Results' in your ARexx script.) Example Command Scripts ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Included in the Macros drawer, you should find a few example command (ARexx) scripts. The comments within the scripts may be in German, but fortunately they still work in any country. You should be able to follow the logic of the programs anyway. Latest and Greatest ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Because MovieShop is constantly being upgraded, the following list will not include all of the available commands. There may also be modifications to some of these commands. To get a current list press RIGHTAMIGA+E to bring up the Execute Command window. Enter CommandList RAM:Commands.txt. All of the current commands will be saved to an ASCII file called Commands.txt in RAM:. Command Reference ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A certain level of MovieShop and ARexx script-writing knowledge is assumed for people using the following commands; therefore, there is limited explanation. The syntax for these command should be obvious to experienced users. Where possible, a reference to the related menu item is in parenthesis. The menu item could be an actual action or a window, from where the action is executed. You may notice that some commands are redundant (e.g., Pause and ScenePause). This is due to the fact that prior versions of MovieShop did not have certain features, like a Time Line or Audio Partition. Their addition created similar functions. As such, a new command naming convention was used, causing some duplication. The old commands have been left in for compatibility purposes. The current settings of the commands marked with an asterisk (*) can be determined using the Read command. The asterisk is not part of the command syntax. The format for the commands is as follows: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- COMMAND NAME Description TEMPLATE* Special Return Code: Result variable** Example Explanation of example ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: Not all items appear for every command.
