AMIGA Plus Disk Instructions If this is your original disk that came with AMIGA Plus, PLEASE MAKE A COPY IMMEDIATELY! This disk features the following programs which can all be run by double-clicking on their icons from the Workbench (unless specifically stated that they run from CLI only): TypeAttack David Alves' cross between a typing tutor and a "missile command" game, double-click on the TypeAttack icon in the drawer of the same name. After the title screens are done, select a rank (level of difficulty) and what the targets will be: numbers, letters or both. Begin defending your cities by hitting the key which matches the falling bomb. To copy this game to another floppy, or to a hard disk, drag the type attack drawer over to that disk. You may also have to change the TypeAttack icon's "Default Tool" from :IconX to something like c:IconX assuming IconX is in your C: directory. TYPE ATTACK will not run without IconX. (IconX can be found on your Workbench1.3 disk or on this disk) If you are running TypeAttack from the Workbench and you only have 512K of memory, be careful about the number of windows you have open on the WorkBench screen. Each window eats up precious memory that TypeAttack requires to run properly. Close all windows that are not needed before running TypeAttack. You may have to drag the TypeAttack icon out of its drawer, leave it right on the Workbench screen, then close all the other open windows and try it. If it still doesn't work, reboot and try again. The top bar on the Workbench screen should be displaying AT LEAST "385000 free memory" for TypeAttack to run. AMIGAHawk This game was created with the Shoot-Em-Up Construction Kit from Accolade. Playing the game is simple -- just plug in your joystick and blast everything that moves while dodging hostile fire. To load the game, double-click the AMIGAHawk icon. A screen will open up and inform you that a certain file can't be found. Click the mouse to continue anyway -- we didn't have room to include some of the title screens on this disk. To exit the game click both mouse buttons simultaneously, then click on the upper left corner of the title screen. Users with only 512k of memory should follow the special procedures described above for the TypeAttack game. To copy this game to another disk, you must also copy the directory edit_files, and its contents to that disk, as well as the game and its icon. Gone With The Windows Gone With The Windows is a cute and useful utility which uses a "ScrollingPopUpMenu" to display all the windows on your Workbench screen. Double-click on the Gone With The Windows icon to start the program then move your mouse over the sunny (or starry) gadgets (which look like windows -- real ones on a house, not Amiga windows) and hold the left button down. A menu will pop up with the titles of windows in it. Move over a title and release the mouse button to move that window to the front (or back). If more than 4 windows are open, the list will scroll as you move the mouse towards the arrow gadgets on the menu. To really see this thing in action, clutter your Workbench screen with as many windows as you can stomach (open all the drawers on the AMIGA Plus disk, the RAM Disk, your Workbench disk, etc.). The Lattice C source code for this program is in the Programming drawer. It contains easy instructions for compiling with Aztec C. Church Drawer The Church drawer contains files which accompany John Pierce's Church-In-The-Woods ray-trace animation article. StudioANIM is a wireframe animation which can be played by double-clicking on it and then clicking on the first frame to actually start it running. To exit, hold the left mouse button down. This animation uses Mindware's redistributable PlayPFX animation player which is in this drawer. Two pictures are also included which you can use as clip-art in your own works of art. To view Church or Candle, just double-click on its icon. This will run David Grothe's redistributable SuperView program in this drawer to display these pictures. To exit, click the right mouse button. Press the space bar to toggle the color-cycling. Lastly, the files Church.scene and Candle.scene are the Sculpt-Animate 4D objects from which the pictures and animation were rendered (moth sold separately). To use these files, you must own Sculpt 4D (Byte by Byte), then load them with the "Load Scene" menu option. A side note about the art: the original Church picture was in HAM overscan mode and was about 111K long. To squeeze it onto this disk, Aki loaded it into PhotoLab as a 32-color pic, saved it, loaded it into DPaint III and cut it out as a brush so that the black background wasn't included, then saved it in the lean, svelte 39k form on this disk. Because the colors in this picture are mostly dark, the change in quality between HAM and 32 color mode was almost imperceptible. This would probably not be the case for pictures with a wide range of colors. Programming Drawer This drawer contains ReadPrint, my useful IconX script which will read a text file, then give the option of printing it. To do this, click on the ReadPrint icon then hold down the shift key and double-click the text's icon. This is an easy way to print these disk instructions. For more details, read the Icon article. This drawer also holds ICON, our utility for modifying Workbench icons via CLI. This program must be run from the CLI. This program's unexcelled power makes it easy to do bad things to good icons, so BE CAREFUL. We recommend this program for more advanced users who feel comfortable using the CLI and scripts, where this utility can be quite handy. The syntax for this command will be displayed if you simply type ICON at the CLI prompt. The first argument is always a file name for an icon WITHOUT the ".info" extension. Without further arguments, ICON will display information about the icon. Other arguments can change the icon type, the stack size, the default tool, or the tool types list. To change the Tool types list, use the R or A flags followed by the appropriate tool types string(s) and ending with the word "END" or "end". Using the C flag will generate C source code for the icon, which you can INCLUDE in your own programs so that they can save files with icons. More detailed instructions and examples accompany the icon article in the magazine. The C source code for ICON is also in this Drawer. It was written in Aztec C, but compiles with Lattice (although the include files get some errors!? ;-* ) In addition, the Programming drawer contains the files for Dan Wolf's HAM assembly language article. Just double-click on the Spectrum icon to watch 528 colors on a HAM screen. This program will end all by itself after a while, so be patient. Finally, the C source code for Gone With The Windows is also found in this drawer, along with some files needed to produce a 2 meg animation with Mindware's PageRender 3D that were left out of the TASS drawer on the last AMIGA Plus disk. (sorry) The entire disk has been processed with Blitz A Disk (B.A.D.) from M.V. Micro (distributed by Centaur Software Inc.) in order to speed up disk access. The format is the same as all AmigaDOS disks, but the files have been reorganized so that the icons are found and displayed very quickly.
