3                      ESCOM BOUGHT THE LAMIGA - WHO CARES?

So,  it  finally  happened.   After  only  approx.   1 year, someone has finally
managed  to  get  hold  over  the  LAMIGA.  2ESCOM is the name, PC is their game.
Doesn't it hurt to see yourselves swallowed by a PC-producing firm?  Well, after
no one really cared anymore about the bidding fakes from C= UK, a German company
has  run the market.  3How much did they spend?  100000,-DM?  Maybe 200000,-?  Or
3did  they  get  money  from  the German government for saving workingplaces?  1We
won't  know,  but  one  thing we DO know - this won't change a single bit in the
end.  The LAMIGA is dead and that's it.

One  of  their  spokesmen  is  2HELMUT  JOST1.   He wants to have a new multimedia
machine built up from the LAMIGA.  Isn't it strange that an ex-COMMODORE-Germany
head  claims  this  after having joined the PC-sector?  Is it nostalgy?  Do they
want  to  save  some  money from the taxes?  The LAMIGA might have set the first
stakes  in direction of multimedia, but the CD-i and the other machines have for
long  filled  the  market.   No RISC-processor based chipset will help out and I
really doubt that they will give the RISC a real try either.  The new processors
that  will  be  needed  badly  to  at least slightly fill up the gap between the
LAMIGA  and the PC will be some 68060 undoubtfully.  Too bad the new INTELs will
be out by the end of the year so this will be no solution for the speed.

Whatever  will come, the LAMIGA like we used to know him won't ever return.  The
scene  has  lost  too much of it's members to the PC to be an economical factor.
Gamers have consoles.  People interested in movies their VCR.  Any soundcard can
blast  the  LAMIGA  to hell (4 channels!), the AGA-architecture was outdated the
day  it  came  out - the AAA will be even more oldfashioned.  Every board with a
name runs on PC.  Where is the space, the market, for this "multimedia" machine?
Even if it would be a success (unlikely) - it would be uninteresting to a scene.

You  know  what would worry me most in your place?  It's the brand ESCOM itself.
2They  are  known to produce low-budget computers with recycled parts 1(especially
harddisks!)  2which  turn  into a mess after two years of not-so-well working.  1I
mean,  the  LAMIGA wasn't a very stable thing.  I often watched RokDee and E-Noz
fooling  around with their machines, trying to get something fixed - we all know
that  after  the  C-64,  C=  has never again managed to create something working
properly on the long run.  But ESCOM?  What will this be?  New "super-computers"
based  on  the A500 in the box of a SCHNEIDER EURO-PC?  Maybe with the floppy of
the C-64 and the ATARI ST black/white monitor?  Why not having a dataset?

Jesus  Christ!   If  they  really bring this out this could even mean the end of
ESCOM,  I  mean  - 2at least the LAMIGA has managed to kill one company.  1Why not
another one, too?

Somehow you pitty me:  You've waited one year just to find out that nothing will
change.  There is one thing to do now:  2Go and buy yourself a PC.
