|1-Old 64 demos |1-are they classics?? typed with a severe case of the farts by ---------------------------------------- Mammoth/Indi ------------ Cor yeah have I got an arse attack, every five minutes I am letting rip, this room stinks bad. Anyway, I`ve just got back to Croydon (26/11/92) from Felixstowe having spent the weekend camped in front of my 64 playing classic games and watching classic demos. Anyone remember "Sanxion" by Foxy & Dot, on the Meanteams "Flash Gordon" demo, how about Stoat & Tim`s "Circlesque" then? Ring any bells? The standards of coding nowadays are higher than ever before with coders doing massive demos that would take up about 300 C64`s worth of memory, but for CLASS I say you cant beat the BCS`s "Scrollerama" and Pulse Productions "Juxtaposition", way bak in time about ten years ago coders were porducing demos with decent effects, using sprites from commercial games (not forgetting the music) and displaying bitmaps where necessary. There was a time where demos were at their height of production, about late 86 I think, loads of crews were formed, demos were coded and uploaded onto Compunet for voting and if you were lucky you could get into the fabled "Hall of Fame" where demos were looked on as some sort of software god. A lot of these groups went on to write games, the best example of this is Sensible Software, Chris Yates and John Hare wrote a few daft demos on Cnet onder the acronyms of Cuddly Crix and Jovial Jops before turning out stuff like Parallax (bloody superb, played that for five hours last night), Wizball (sheer magic) and S.E.U.C.K to name a few. I know you are all thinking "He is living in the past, get into the future", well I AM in the future but I love every now and then to go home and sit in front of the old 64 and relive some memories for a while. I still remember my jaw hitting the floor first time I saw the King Tut demo by the 1001 crew, the demo showed the Tut mask in 128 sprites filling the ENTIRE SCREEN!!! I still listen to the music from Knucklebusters, Miami Vice, Parallax, Lightforce, Warhawk, Delta, Monty on the Run (one of the best) Dark Side (my mate Hagar did that!) Tusker (brilliant), International Karate to name a few. How many classic Amiga games do you know the music to?? How many classic Amiga Demos do you know the music to? Only three come into my mind, the RSI Megademo, Cebit 90 (first piece of Amiga Music I heard) and Intuitions Megademo. Gamewise the title music to Turrican is memorable as is Chuck Rocks 1 & 2, No Second Prize by Thalion featured superb funky guitars and Lemmings had some good tunes. (One of which is from the demo Puggs in Space). The 64 may be dead to some people, to me it is a doorway to my spotty teenage hacking years, when I spent all day in front of Genam hacking music out of games for a demo, it was FUN!! It was only 64K, but that machine left a bigger imprint on peoples lives than any other home micro. Write to The Word on the subject of the 64, lets have a forum on classic software from the past, that is if you are old enough to remember. Gotta go now my arse is catching fire, I have farted every bloody paragraph of this article (or should that be farticle!!). End
